[How To] Fix Recovery After Formatting /data - AT&T HTC One (M7)

Well, I had a bit of fun tonight. I decided for whatever reason to format /data, not just a factory reset, totally format it!
After that I wasn't able to boot into recovery, it would flash for a moment and near instantly reboot and hang at the kernel forever.
To fix it, boot into bootloader mode, select fastboot.
run commands;
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
after your phone fully boots you will be able to access recovery again.
I tracked it down to the cache folder not getting recreated, not sure if I could reproduce it, don't care to try, but if anyone else runs into this, this should fix it right up!

Were you sweating bullets during the process or were you confident you'd be able to figure it out?

[Q] Thunderbolt help! Hanging at HTC logo, but can access clockwork recovery

Yesterday I unplugged my phone and it wouldn't start. Had to take out battery and SD card to get it to eventually start, but it hung on the HTC white screen.
I can access the clockwork recovery screen, and have even been able to load previous backups and new roms to see if anything will work, but it won't let me get past that white HTC screen.
I feel like I'm close because I can still access the recovery menu, but something's up. So I have a few questions that if anyone can answer I will appreciate more than you know.
1) Is there a way to unroot my phone from the recovery menu/PC access so I can get it replaced by Verizon if it is a hardware problem? I know, I know, I did it to myself, but if there's a way out, I'll take it.
2) What are RUU files and would they somehow fix this? I am not against unrooting and going back to stock, especially after this scare.
3) As of now I have DasBampf 1.8.6 and MR2 radio on the phone. Will the RUU remove these and flash a whole new Radio/ROM? Again, I know I'm an idiot, but I need help. Help me Obi Wan!
4) I'll check back if anyone needs more info. BTW, the phone only boots into recovery *power+down volume* Won't turn on manually. I've tried another SD card, I've tried other ROMS. I have NOT tried any new radios yet, as I'm scared to accidentally brick it.
Thanks in advance.
go into bootloader (when it's off hold power button and volume down until white screen pops up) wait for it to check your sd card, then click wipe data. it should boot up after its done wiping the data, if not you might have to select reboot in recovery.
RUU update.
I flashed the 2.11.605.5 build of the new RUU. It started out fine, and then it failed at user data, system, and one other. Now it's still in the same hanging screen. What the hell!?
Please help me before I **** this thing up even more.
OTA updates are the DEVIL!!!!!! You people need to block them and stop installing the unrooted version while you are rooted with no reguard to your phones safety. If you are rooted install the rooted version of the OTA.
If I helped please use the thank you button and donate a free account to my dropbox http://db.tt/uDc7iw7x
I didn't read the op but if its hanging on htc screen with new ota try flashing the radio the new ota has or an older one. Had that issue with my EVO.
The wrong radio will cause your phone to never pass htc screen.

Haven't tried anything new yet, but besides one time this morning, I can't even get to the bootloader. Won't turn on, even with a spare charged working battery. Time to call Verizon and maybe eat the payment, methinks.
Update for anyone interested.
I got onto IRC and contacted Jcase, who had me flash a new RUU, which seemed to fix the problem.
HOWEVER, my phone is still FUBAR, as it shuts off periodically and will not allow me to call out. I managed to go through the entire unroot process and got my phone back to original status. I have a replacement coming from Verizon soon and although I think it's a hardware problem with my phone, I don't think I'll be rooting again anytime before my warranty expires. Thanks for all the help everyone.
need help
Hey guys, I was trying to unroot my thunderbolt but jacked things up. I had it wipe all date, now will not boot Its still rooted. When i go into the reboot mood its by Revolutionary. Info it displays where it gives me options of fastboot, recover, factory reset, simlock, hboot usb and image crc is
Revolutionary
MECHA XD SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.O4.1002
MICROP-/
RADIO-1.49.00.0406v_1
eMMC-BOOT
Idk if that helps. It doesnt reboot or does a looping process. Just stays at the white htc screen and doesnt say anything, and is not the screen where it says htc quietly brilliant. When i go into recovery 4ext recovery touch is whats available, current rom:unknown. Im fairly new so i would greatly appreciate any help, I like this phone alot and would hate to use something else. I dont care if after everything is said and done its still rooted or not. I have my personal info still on my card and a backup on my computer so im safe on that and dont care if i lose everything on the phone. Also i did not try to do the ota update.
Because you wiped all your data to ahead and wipe cache and dalvik cache and system. Then flash another rom.

If you dont me asking, is there a step process you can suggest or point me to? Idk how to flash the rom and am new to this scene.
When flashing a rom. Wipe caches (cache and dalvik cache), wipe data (most of the time I recommend doing this), and system/boot partitions. Then after wiping all of those choose the option to flash a rom( I haven't used clockworkmod recovery in ages and I don't remember what they list that option as). When the installation is completed reboot and if all goes well you should be running a custom rom of your choosing. I would suggest you ditch cwm for 4ext recovery just as soon as you can. Cwm has some unusual bugs where the caches may not be properly wiped and your rom won't boot because of this.

I know back in the EVO days of no 4EXT Virus had a SuperWipe. It would wipe everything 3 times in CWM. If you are persistent to keep CWM you might want to try that... I think I have it somewhere I can make compatible for the Thunderbolt. But it is highly recommended to use 4EXT instead.
I had it at one point too but wiping 3x or 10x just to flash a rom is ridiculous.

Don't wipe. Can you reboot into recovery? If so restore a previous rom or nandroid. You shouldn't lose anything. Above All don't panic.

I am not trying to be a smarta$$, but your post says that you are clicking reboot recovery. What about just reboot? Could also wipe /cache and then advanced/wipe dalvik-cache, then reboot.
If you have adb then you can reboot that way too.

reboot just locks up at splash screen and clearing the cache and dalvik wont delete files correct? also the cache we talk about is the wipe cache partition?
Wiping /cache and /dalvik won't delete any data so no worries about that. Wipe them both and then reboot. It will take up to 3-5minutes to rebuild the caches.
I kind of need to know what ROM you are/were on to figure out where to go. Once you answer that and try the above, and it doesn't work I have another idea to try.

trying to reboot now but it looks like it isnt going to work. but i also read somewhere else
Only the factory recovery wipes the /data/media ("/sdcard") partition. Any third-party community-built recovery (like ClockworkMod Recovery or TeamWin Recovery Project) will wipe everything except /data/media.
So, to answer your question, as long as the files are on your phone's pretend SD card (the default for user-created content and files you transfer to your phone), they won't be wiped when installing a custom ROM.
is this true? also again could care less about the phone just need the new baby pics and vids
You are correct. The only ways to erase your internal SD card is by formatting it, masterclear in Odin, or formatting /data (not wiping but formatting -they are different functions).
Did the wipe and reboot work?

How long does it stay on the bootscreen? Is it the "cyanogenmod" bootscreen, or the HTC one?
Sometimes it takes a while to boot up...I haven't had issues with any of my attempts, and I've done them "wrong" on purpose, to see if it makes a major difference. The only time I have issues is when I do it completely wrong and not flash the boot.img.
Are you installing other things? A different kernel as well, maybe? Might also want to try to redownload -- maybe you had a bad zip..?
That is a bit odd, but have you tried official nightly to see how it acts?

Sounds to me like you're not doing something right. Are you sure that you're flashing the right boot.img? Take us through an exact step by step of what you're doing....this isn't a problem that anyone else is having as far as I'm aware.

I had this problem when I was first trying to install CM10 as well. I used TWRP as my recovery, and was HTC Dev unlocked with HBOOT 1.15 (I used the RegawMOD one-click root method)
Note: I'm not going into complete detail on all of the steps, but I'll go into detail on where I made the mistake
1. Use adb/fastboot to flash the boot.img from the CM10 zip file. Reboot into recovery.
2. Select wipe, then do a factory reset, then a system wipe, then a cache wipe, and then a dalvik cache wipe (in that order). Stay in recovery.
3. Flash CM10. Stay in recovery.
4. Flash gapps. Stay in recovery.
5. Select Reboot > system
Step 2 is where I was messing up. I wasn't doing the factory reset (or wasn't doing the resets in the right order). After that, it did take awhile for it to boot up (5-10 minutes, maybe more). It only takes that long the first time it boots, every time since has been pretty quick.
Also, I got my instructions from a youtube video, but I couldn't find it after searching for 20 minutes. Although it's late, and my brain is fried, so I might have found it and just not recognized it.
Hope this helps.
(Also, I'd suggest doing ALL of the steps over again, from the top, not just the one that you think you might have missed. I don't think that all of the steps have to be done in order, but doing some of them out of order is what was causing my issue, so better just to start from the beginning)
when i download the zip i extract the boot.img to where ever im going to fastboot it
then i superwipe my phone
i install the nightly then the gapps
after i boot to bootloader and fastboot
the phone starts up but then if i ever reboot the phone it just hangs on the boot animation
i have done this proccess with every rom and no problems just with this one

Ok. My first rule of thumb is that if you are trying multiple roms, make sure you rename the boot.img accordingly. I change the name to correspond with the date and rom (like 915cm10boot.img). I don't get them confused and they're always right.
Download the rom.
Extract boot.
Boot into recovery and wipe everything that isn't your sd card. I always do them in order from TWRP, starting from the left top. I don't superwipe, so let's skip that for now.
Install your rom and your gapps. Rom first, gapps after.
Once that's done, navigate back to the main tarp and choose the reboot option, then choose bootloader.
Fastboot flash your renamed boot.img file.
Reboot device.
Do not...do not sync/restore apps from Google during the initial setup. Just do the bare minimum that you have to to get through setup.
Reboot.
report back.

[Q] Constant Reboot, S-OFF, Rooted

So out of the blue my phone starts continuously rebooting. Typically right when it gets to the point where it's loading the unlock ring. Sometimes it will get passed that where I can navigate the phone but will always reboot with 5 minutes. Going on for about 2 days now.
I s-off'd rooted a month ago with no issue until now.
I've already tried reloading the RUU and performing a factory reset, locking/unlocking the boot loader. Re s-offing with no luck.
Any ideas besides attempting a return to sprint or htc?

I've done everything suggested above, but to no avail. I've tried restoring Nandroids and flashing the stock rooted ROM. None of them make it completely past the boot animation. I get about 3 sec. in, and it reboots. Any ideas? I'm truly stumped, and I REALLY don't want to go back to my back-up phone (I do love my Opti S, but still...). Can anyone help?
EDIT: I've flashed the most recent CM nightly (b/c I was on the milestone when the problems started) and that's where I get the farthest. I can get to the screen where the phone tries to turn on Wifi before it locks up and reboots. As a matter of fact, the problems started this morning when my phone wouldn't connect to Wifi or data. Could a bad wifi radio be the reason for the reboots?
Thanks!

Hmm..tried everything, still reboots. Seems like I can buy myself some time by going airplane mode and turning off NFC. Thinking this is a hardware issue.
Anyone have advice about attempting a return with Sprint or HTC with S-OFF/rooted then back to stock?
Take out your SD card, boot to recovery, wipe everything (data, system, cache, dalvik) and then flash something like cm10 and try fast boot flashing the boot.IMG from the ROM...just for the sake of trying.

Not sure what's happening. (Sort of urgent!)

Well let me explain my predicament. The other day I flash somex's something explosive rom after a wipe of the everything I need to wipe ( Data,Cache,Davlik) When it was finished flashing I got to rebooting. I ended up with a blank, yet illuminated screen ( if that makes sense) I waited about 20 minutes. After coming to the conclusion that the ROM doesn't work I did another wupe of everything needed. Then i flashed JoseGalre's ROM since it has aroma it told me that it had an error and coundln't finsih the instalation. I wiped again and reflashed, same error. I wanted to see what would happen if it let it boot up w/o recovery and it ended up in a boot loop. I tried to go back to 4ext and it seemed to load up just fine but half way through the startup it ends up back in the bootloop. I ran Hasoon's all in one kit and flashed TWRP and it worked just fine until I flash a rom. It seemed to be working just fine then it suddenly crashes and we're back in the loop. I've been trying to fix for the last few days but to no avail. I marked the title as urgent because my parents are going out of town for the weekend and I really need a phone. They havn't a clue that it doesn't work becausse they get home before me. Any help would be appreciated a great deal.
I've had something similar happen and freaked out my phone was down for half a day.
Try booting into the boot loader by holding vol down and power boot into recovery, wipe everything then format everything except SD card and try restoring a backup. Hopefully you made one or two in the past.

I don't think you wiped properly. You needed to format ALL PARTITIONS. I can't stress that enough lol.
Edit: Go into bootloader first. Hold volume down then hold power as well. Choose recovery and format all partitions. If that works you're good!
Use the toolkit and flash 4ext. And make sure whenever you flash Roms that you format all partitions.
If that doesn't work you need to flash a RUU, get it back to stock, it will still retain S OF. Then flash 4ext again. Your problems should be fixed for sure if my first method doesn't work.

Hey guys it completly out of the question to format my internal storage so keep that in mind
GB or IC RUU and which one?
You don't have to format internal storage just data, cache, system, and boot

Just choose format all partitions.
If you want to use a ruu use the T-Mobile ICS RUU.

So i changed the name of the RUU i download to PH85img.zip and use the all in one tool kit to flash it. The black htc loading screen came up. I waited until it finished and then the bootloader came up with a list of things it head to unzip and then load. After all of that was finished it gave me an error. After reading a message that you should get an error ( i now realize this was at another stage) so i though nothing of it and rebooted. A black screen with 4 warning triangles came up. I let it load all day and when i got home i plugged it back in and I noticed it looked like it was unplugging after securing the charger in I came the conclusion that it wasn't holding a charge and dying on the battery. Normally I would leave it alone but when you plug in the charger it turns itself on. I've began living with the fact that my phone is bricked. But any help would be appreciated.
BTW is there a way to get data (music pictures contacts) that were saved on the internal storage?
Probably should have gone with full caps on the PH85IMG.zip
It's easier just to put the zip on your external sdcard and gone in to bootloader.
