Hey folks, I just picked up a Galaxy Nexus when it was on sale for $549. I'll probably be selling the Amaze soon. Let me know what you guys would like to see comparison wise between the two. I'm running Bulletproof on the Amaze and AOKP on the Nexus.

I already had a thread a while back regarding picture comparison, there is no comparison as I've been told!!! camera and pictures are below par on the galaxy nexus. There are at least a dozen phones out that take better pics. the new HTC camera is the best on the market, better than iphone 4s's as well... The new camera is currently employed in the amaze and the rezound. f/2.2 28 mm wide angle lense, backside illuminated sensor. the viewing angle is very wide, meaning you don't have to keep moving back to get someone in the pic. f/2.2 gives you very close and clear macro shots and very good shots in general... the iphone 4s has an aperture of f/2.4 the lower the aperture the closer you can get a macro also Smaller aperture=greater depth of field/wider zone of focus.

dude I know you love reading tech articles and stuff but I am not that big fan of blabla details they post on some phonereview websites. who cares what the characteristics of the cameras are on the paper? when it comes to pictures the image talks itself so 2 pictures of the same object will be the best way to judge which camera is better

Because some specs on paper actually matter.. the MOST important thing in the camera is the lense, and sensor which HTC has one of the best in these phones atm, along with Nokia, and Sonys xperia line. I was so disapointed when looking at the pictuers and video taken with the galaxy nexus, its def not worth the $600+ i would never pay that for a phone anyways..
edit: thats why dslr are some of the best cameras on the market. you dont see people saying "its just specs on paper, and they dont matter". its because of the the lense and sensor they put into the cameras. i can see people saying that to MP because you cant really tell a difference between 5 and 8 MP comeing to regular pictures unless zooming in or video

Lets just stop reading about specks of things from now one because they don't matter.
I also love how people come to this forum saying iphone 4s camera is better. I have personally taken multiple pictures with my phone and my friends 4s and put them on my 1080 p screen at home...Amaze kicks the butt out of 4s...some people think the camera on the 4s is better because the picture they see on the phone looks better...It's not a fair comparison. The two screens have different dpi's screen saturations etc. If you want to compare pics...get a big screen best quality screen you can find and connect your computer to it...maybe a monitor better than a 1080p... then judge for yourself...screen saturation of monitors also affect how a picture looks. heck print the picture ans see which one is better.

Exactly my thoghts, lol. of course everything will look better on the iphones screen its higher resolution on a smaller screen with more vibrant colors. same goes with those sammy devices super AMOLED + screens

someone was saying in another thread that iphone takes better low light pictures...thats ignorant with lower aperture number you get a bigger aperture size...means more light comming into the camera...so iphone 4s's f/2.4 has a smaller aperture thus letting less light in, than a f/2.2 which has a better aperture letting more light in...just ignorant...lower aperture also leads to better clarity and overall and closer macro shots!!! people should read a little camera 101 before they start posting things based on pure opinions about camera's.

the lense has nothing to do with aperture...on point and shoot cameras aperture size changes based on lighting, on dslr's you can control them manually....on in general lower aperture number is means a bigger aperture hole; thus more light. older phones have higher aperture numbers thus letting in less light, less clarity etc. The big lense size has nothing to do with aperture...aperture is like the iris of the camera...

He was just saying how the HTC camera is better than the Galaxy Nexus, and used the iphone as an example because iphones have such "big hype" for no reason. a good example imo cause everyone thinks iphones are better than everything because the Apple logo/name. then you replied to him saying specs dont matter blah, with that comment he had prove you wrong so i wouldnt be pointing pictures and telling him to gtfo. no need for that

I am sorry I offended you...I have tried explaining things over and over about camera's in different threads, but people just like to be ignorant about it...I admit I am sensitive when it comes to camera quality! hope you find what you're looking for! Yeah thats what i meant, when i had my sensation i was looking at his incredible and comparing the camera side by side and his aperture/lense looks much bigger and i thought to myself how come the photos look so crappy then lol. i know a bit about cameras but im not genius
edit: on topic i wonder why samsung picked such a crap camera on the galaxy nexus then on their galaxy s ii had a pretty good camera.. makes no sense, isnt the galaxy nexus supposed to top the android market? like the nexus 1 did back in the day

I know there are some sonyericsson phones out there with variable aperture size...If we could change aperture size's like dslr's on our phone it would be heaven!!!! As of now...the lighting is controlled by software...on point and shoots lighting is changed by changing aperture size like the iris of your eye. This controls both lighting and clarity, phones do this through software, thus having a bigger aperture (smaller aperture size f/size) is beneficial because the software can always turn down the lighting if needed...but you cannot get more lighting if you have a smaller aperture focusing pictures is a whole other story and are done through different ways....I gotta make a thread about camera's let me get some good sites and info together and i'll make a nice thread regarding camera quality.

I believe its a little bit of cost issue a little bit of politics. Samsung didn't want their best phone to be the google one. I think google gets a good margin of profit from these types of devices. They probably sacrificed the camera for a 720p screen for cost reasons...the 720p pentile amoled is not that great...the rezounds 720p slcd is much better: 1. because its a smaller screen and has a higher pixel density, higher than iphone, lol!!! and 2. its a regular rgb matrix instead of pentile!!

Imagine if nikon helped make a camera on a new smartphone lol, seeing there new NIkon 1 how they make a camera that great in that small of a size is great. im sure phone cameras will only get better
remember back in the day like the pantech phones (pantech matrix for example) haha. had like a 1mp camera and people were hype just because it was a phone, with a camera. now we have cameras on our phones as good as some point and shoot cameras. and video almost as good as a DSLR

exactly! no more ericsson haha, did you see how good the zoom/detail was on it? you can see every word on the tv which was pretty far away.. 720p display + 12mp camera with great sensor = sold. not to mention the 32gb storage and i love sonys ui. also a Playstation cerified phone.. i think Sony should have made the newest nexus xD only bad thing is the battry isnt removable and no sdcard slot but neither does the galaxy nexus

The one thing about the Galaxy that pushed me toward switching was the AMOLED screen, it's just so pretty! The blacks are so deep and the colors so crisp. Aside from that however, the Amaze pretty much takes the cake, especially in respect to build quality and the camera as mentioned.
Either way, this comparison is rather exciting
I've come up with a list of differences between the two devices, could you comment on how significant each of the items in the list are and possibly add to the list.
Nokia Lumia 920:
Super sensitive screen for glove typing
Pure Motion HD+ screen
Less glare and reflection on screen (is that true?)
Deeper blacks (is that true?)
Oleophobic layer on screen (how effective is it?)
2000 mAh battery (how do the battery lives compare?)

Nokia apps are awesome. Especially Maps/navigation, huge improvement.
The 920 Screen is amazing. Extremely usable in bright sun, the HTC Screen is close to useless in sun light. Personally I find the 920 screen the best I have seen on a mobile device but I am a more of a "vivid/bright/accurate blacks/good in sunlight" guy than "This phone represents the true colors of the world". I can't stand HTC screens.
The 920 is heavier, but feels like a better built phone holding them both in hand.
Ok, i have both of these handsets. I have a black HTC 8x and a white lumia 920.
All i can say is i wont be back on the htc 8x anytime soon, in fact ever. The lumia 920 is just one absolutely incredible phone, the software Nokia has preinstalled such as Nokia maps and music are absolutely fantastic.
The only thing some people might dislike is the weight, which personally i love! The iphone 5 feels like a toy in comparison.
In a nutshell best phone I've ever owned, and I've owned some of the best!

Both are great phones. You really have hold them both at store to get your own preferences. The real difference is the storage space. 920 comes with 32 GB Iirc while HTC comes with only 8GB for the same price. You have pay way more on HTC for additional storage.
On the software side, Nokia owns its own mapping company. So you get free Navigation software called Nokia Drive. On HTC, it probably will bundle its licensed navigation software that you get to use for free for 30 days then you have to pay like its WP7 phones.

I also like the weight of the phone. Might be cognitive dissonance, but it feels a lot better to have a slightly more weight in the hand when using a slightly bigger phone. The device is resting in the hand, more than for example a Galaxy SIII.
Agree completely. I can see how the weight will bother some people but I like it. Feels solid and sturdy.

Just got an 8X free on top of my Lumia 920 and quite frankly, it's a pretty epic paperweight. I'm exaggerating, it's awesome for an HTC device but it's just not as good. The screen is completely overshadowed by the Lumia's CBD, the Lumia is much louder on the external speakers and via headphones the 8X has a bit of an echo... On Sennheiser headphones that simply shouldn't happen but I guess it's intended for low quality garbage like Beats. The 8X also feels pretty thin and flimsy and if you press hard on the back of the phone you can actually use the touch screen... It's concerning. Overall, my only complaint with the Lumia is the tinny rattle of the vibration motor.
Nokia let other manufacturers use their software like maps so that's on the 8x too.

Maps, true. I think MS licensed the maps from Nokia.
But what about turn by turn navigation? Some thing similar to Google Nav.
Yep Nokia is making an app for all partners including HTC so that will be out soon I imagine.

Read the reviews and make the dicisions yourself. What you listed mostly are marketing bluffs. Nothing important.
Many are of minimal importance, but I would disagree that their aren't some important differences. That is the whole reason I left the store with the 920 after trying them out for a bit.
Primarily with the Nokia you get 32gb for $99, The screen is distinctly better (my opinion, 5-8x better in sun), and I personally think the Nokia felt like a much more quality and well made phone.
Rogers is offering a 8GB version of the 8X for $50 less. I might go for that since I don't really use the space on phones and stuff anyway and the Nokia apps don't seem very useful. I'll go into a store and see though if the audio on the 8X is much better, and if the 920 is as heavy as people say, etc.

So you'd take a 4x hit on memory for $50? I wouldn't especially since, like you listed in your original post:
- Better screen technology (after 320 or so PPI, you really can't make out much of a difference - 342 is negligible difference)
- Better build quality
- SIGNIFICANTLY better rear facing camera + technology (surprised no one really emphasized that yet in this thread).
But I guess it's up to you...

Good review between them.
Lumia 920 sound quality through headphones is very good. There is no background noise like on my Cowson J3. I noticed plenty of noise on the older Lumia 900. It's excellent when you output it through an AUX cable.
I've read a good news from here : http://360dmobile.com/184/. It said that lumia 920 camera issue was fixed. It's such a great news, is there any lumia 920 users can confirm this fix

Don't blame your camera for poor results, a camera is only as good as the person using it. If a good camera could create brilliant photographs in the hands of anyone then photographers wouldn't be in a job. Good light, subject matter, thoughts on framing and angles make good pictures, the camera is just there to record the result.

I realise that. But photography is my hobby and if the 920 is guilty of anything it is having output that isn't extensively post processed. If you look at what the iPhone outputs it is photos that are sharpened and have increased contrast. If it saved what was captured at the sensor it would be very dull.
So with the 920 fix they've either reduced noise reduction which shouldn't have been applied in daylight or applied more post processing.
One X can't beat the 920 at video, especially concert footage, the sound of the 920 is much better, no distortion.

Fair enough.. I haven't done any video with the 920.. so I have no comments on that.
I too can confirm improvements on the camera. I just did night photos with night mode on and off. Literally, the difference is night and day. LOL

Complaints have never been about night photos, but about "soft" daytime photos.

I've noticed some slight improvement in the sharpness of the photos, but it's still nowhere as sharp as the photos taken with my Samsung Infuse, which is a horrible let-down.
a possible explanation
It's been suggested that maybe only the AT&T firmware carries the camera fix. That would explain why some folks swear their camera is fixed and others don't see the difference. I have a Rogers Lumia 920 and the camera is as awful as it was the first day I got it. The new firmware did nothing.
So for those who did see an improvement, can you confirm what model of Lumia 920 you have? Firmware number, revision number, batch number and all that so we can confirm apples to apples.

I have the AT&T version.. and I haven't been impressed by the camera. Even after the update.. I can see a minor difference.. but I still can't say it's all that great.
IMHO the One X+ is still beating my Nokia L920
Daytime is fine when the objects are near. But landscapes are where it sucks, but it seems to be focus related.
I planned to wait for the release of the GS4 active, because the original GS4 proved to be very fragile. I do not want to be forced to use a bulky case and the GS4 failed multiple drop tests when compared to the iPhone 5 and its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. According to the rumor mill, the GS4 active will be a inferior to the original GS4. With rumors floating around that it will only have a dual core processor and an 8 megapixel camera, I am not inclined to buy this phone. What are your thoughts? Do you believe that these rumors hold any truth?
Its not rumor. There has been a video posted of the phone. Those specs are true.

This is my way of thinking. The video leaked shows a dual-core, which is sad. I'd gladly buy the phone if it was basically an S4 with better bodywork.
Heck, I'd even buy it if it were waterproof =P
It's a shame, I was looking forward to this. Guess I'll just end up with a standard S4 and an Otterbox.

I may be bashed for saying this but i don't understand why one would buy a high tech phone and then wanting it full protection. If if you buy this phone you should take care of it (I understand a drop may happen to anybody) but still...is like buying a ferrari and wanting to put rugged tires and take it to a rally race

People use their phones every day. Often times people need/want to use their phone in the rain, or perhaps it drops in the puddle, there's a hundred reasons why having a water resistant phone is a good thing for most people.
Saw the official announcement from Samsung on the S4 active. Specs look comparable to the S4 except for the camera. Im hoping the Active will be on Vz by July.

the camera is most likely (don't know for sure but suspecting...) BETTER than the S4.
I've read they increased S4 to 13mp without increasing sensors size.
You've all seen the threads on blurry pics at night, right? One reason why? 13 megapixels, same optics.
More megapixels needs more light. Same light, lower brightness for each pixel. Plus that's a huge file and I doubt the sharpness will really increase with extra megapixels on a phone camera.
I'd rather Samsung use its experience with cameras and optics to provide a REAL increase in image quality via bigger/better sensor, optical image stabilization, etc. Although I just read HDR video came to S4 which is pretty darn cool. And there will be S4 Zoom with an actual zoom lens, also darn cool. That's what I'm talking about. One other thing I wish all phones had was a friggin' lens cover for the camera. Just a little thing that would slide over, maybe not even mechanical, just a little door users could close over it or something. Or at the least I wish case manufacturers would include this, something that slid or buttoned over it. Now I have to use tape.
Anyway, bottom line -- I think the Active camera will be BETTER especially at night..
All specs are actually better. It has an LCD screen which will be much better for a lot of reasons. MUCH brighter, accurate color, no pentile, etc. Work under water, as well as the camera working under water, in the rain, etc. And my fav-- hard buttons.
I'm going to start a thread on Verizon forums on this and try to get in touch with their corporate people to see if I can convince them to bring the S4 Active to Verizon. If they come out with it, i'll buy it off contract in a second!!!!

Megapixel count has nothing to do with how much light they need. It's the sensor that determines how much light is needed. The reason some higher megapixel cameras look worse at night is with the ISO boost you get more grain that is more dispersed across the greater pixel count.
The most important factor in low light performance is sensor size.
And yes, sharpness will absolutely increase with 13mp vs. 8. You have 50% more detail. Keep in mind this really only matters if you are blowing up images on PRINT (it own't make a difference on a 1080p TV since a 2MP image produces a 1920x1080 image, appx.) or if you happen to have a 4k TV
Anyway, bottom line -- I think the Active camera will be BETTER especially at night..

It won't be. The S4 has a better camera, period. The S4 Active uses the same camera as on the Galaxy S3 which is a very good camera, but not as good as that on the S4. Brightness is better but the contrast ratio isn't as good and the blacks aren't as good. This is not a pure win, it's going to be subjective. AMOLED will also have better battery life.

I think it looks like a great phone. I don't know if it's more rugger in terms of drop capabilities - but the waterproof is very cool. I am an avid skier and would love a waterproof phone. Even to use a phone in the rain without worrying about it is nice.

While you're right in most of what you've said, the way you explained it would make the average user think in blanket terms. Higher megapixel count *does*, in fact, require more light to achieve the same results (in terms of stops of light). The larger the sensor, the less light needed to perfectly meter the shot...but with the same size sensor, the higher megapixel sensor will require more light. That part was not incorrect.
In terms of the actual sensor in the Active, nobody knows what it is. You can't say "it's the sensor from the S3", because not even the review sites have any idea at this point. All that we know is that the Active will have an 8MP sensor...assuming that the sensor is the same size as the one in the S4 (there's no reason not to), it potentially could take better shots. Again, that assumes they won't just switch to a smaller 8MP sensor...but if they don't then this thing could be a great camera for low-light shots, since it'll have wonderful sensor pixel density.
I agree with you on the screen. All other factors aside, I'd rather have an LCD than AMOLED. Being able to see the screen during the daytime on an AMOLED is borderline impossible. Yes, the blacks are a little brighter and the contrast is minutely lower...but AMOLED also has its own share of negatives -- the primary being that the saturation is blown through the roof on most of them, completely destroying color balance and realism in pictures.
To the last point...the biggest thing about this phone is that you just don't have to worry about it as much. While most phones today could be used in the rain without issue (seriously...devices today are made to be pretty resilient on their own), this thing could be used in a downpour. It's less important for when you're actually talking on it and more so when it might be in your pocket and it's being covered in water. With a waterproof device, getting caught in a rainstorm isn't as big a deal because the phone won't have a problem with it. That's *HUGE*.
As long as the screen doesn't look like the one on the xperia z from the waterproofing...

Hello. Monday I bring the lumia 920, I read in many forums that lasts almost anything, that's true, how hard you to you with normal use and moderate? come from a hox and lasted a whole day without problems.
So far it easily lasts a day for me. I have 2 gmail accounts, one hotmail account and a facebook account on sync.
So I thinkt the battery life is pretty decent. But if you are a heavy user, the battery will not last a day.
I also do not regret buying this phone, comming from a Galaxy Note II. Although, the camera is a little disappointing, the design is beautiful, and the performance is smooth as butter.

Are you serious. The camera in the 920 has been compared to many professional SLR cameras for quality and has been on par with them. Until the other two newer Lumias got released this camera was the best on the market for a phone. It's best ability is low light however. There is no other phone that can take pics in the low light levels this phone does.

He probably meant from his expectations, since the camera on the Lumia 920 was touted so highly. I have one, and TBH it's a great camera, especially given that it's on a mobile phone, but not mindblowingly game changing.

I come from a Galaxy Note 2.
What I don't like about the Lumia 920 camera:
It does not meassure light properly where I click. It only focusses unlike the Note 2 and the iPhone. I get a lot of pictures of people with dark faces, which has never been a problem on my previous phones.
It's incredibly slow compared to the Note 2, which is almost instant.
The pictures lack contrast, and often look slightly out of focus.
I had expected it to be at least on par with the Note 2 (which has the same camera as the GS3)
These are my experiences with the stock camera app. I can't wait to try the Pro Cam app though.

Can you share a link or something? Because in all the reviews that I have read, noone have compared it to a SLR. In fact, many of them have been disappointed with the daylight performance when compared to other flagship phones launched that fall.
The only times I have seen a anyone comming up with a statement remotely like yours is when testing the Nokia 808 or the Lumia 1020.

Last weekend my Galaxy S III was stolen, and I had to buy a new phone asap. With a little time to think it through I took a chance with Lumia 920 and I can confirm that, in every aspect, Galaxy S III makes better daily photos. However, Lumia 920 supposed to shine in low-light segment, but unfortunately didn't have time to test that. Overall, so far good phone experience.
All the reviews of the Nokia 920 are done with the software error when the Lumia 920 was getting on the market.
Now we have the Amber update so all these reviews are a little outdated isn't?
Fact is, Nokia Lumia 920 has a Carl Zeiss lens and optical image stabilization, one of the reasons I bought the Lumia.
The optical lens is an very important factor of taking a good picture, besides that optical image stabilization is awsome.
Carl Zeiss does have a big name in camera lenses.

The debate here started before the Amber update. I haven't had much use of the camera since then. But the few pictures that I have taken since then are def. not up to SLR standards. Btw. optics do not matter if the rest isn't good enough to back it.
On a side note, I'm using my Galaxy Note 2 today, and damn is it a laggy mess when compared to the Lumia 920 over all (Not talking about the camera here). And it even has 4x1.600 Mhz cores. Wtf.

A phone has to be flat so the sensor can't be big as a SLR.

I agree that it matters, but the end results from my Galaxy Note 2 have been better. So with the Note 2 I get sharper pictures and it takes them the exact moment that I press the camera button which is often a very important feature if you want to get the right motive. It also meassures light at the right target and not the sky.

I've made some test shots today after this discussion (I just bought my Lumia a couple of days ago) with the Pro cam on Amber and yes pictures are pretty sharp.
But to be honest I'm a bit dissapointed about the noise in the pictures.
I think the standard camera does make better quality pictures (after some later tests but I still need to test more) and you can set ISO there as well.
Light is sometimes correct but not always.
Attached a sample picture I took today On amber update and nokia Pro cam set to ISO 100 (f/2.0 and shutter 1/1600 sec are set automatic).
On original image size you see the noise, which shouldn't be there at all on bright daylight.

Same here. Basically it drains very little battery while it's not in use. Even on LTE.
Mine drop 25% just on stand by overnight from 10PM till 5:00AM. I reset, fresh install etc.. but still no help. Lucky if it last me for 8 hours when I start using it. Nagivation for 40 min and battery drop 12%.
