Hello everyone,
This is my first post here , and I rooted my phone a few days ago. Today I wanted to tweak my phone a little, so I followed a video, and after pasting the new systemUI.apk in system folder, I reset the phone, and Its getting stuck @ a screen reading " Android is upgrading, starting apps"
I waited for half an hour, and now I am a bit scared. I have gone into recovery mode ( after a hard reset ). Should I restore factory settings? Or can I restore the systemUI app?

Just restore the nandroid backup you took before you modified.
Factory reset doesn't change the rom. Only your data - so won't help.
If you for some reason didn't take a nandroid backup (although why wouldn't you?) The easiest fix is to flash a stock based custom rom

No. What did I just say? Factory reset doesn't change the rom. You changed the rom (or part of it more accurately) so a factory reset wont fix it. Factory reset only wipes your data. It does not fix things you break when you change parts of the rom.

Okay, I will try and flash it with a stock rom. I am downloading it atm . I will let you know once its done.
You don't necessarily need to flash an official rom which will replace recovery, rom and unroot...
You could flash custom touchwiz roms like wanam lite or omega

if rooted useing the galaxy sIII toolkit, how can i unroot so i can reset device to out of box state??? i know i would go to CWM and wipe the system, but how would i go about flashing the original recovery???

so i flash it in clockwork recovery, and when phone reboots it is back to OEM????
what i mean is the stock GS3 software.. when i am in clockwork recovery, i wipe the system and i flash the stock software, where do i download it from?? thanks..

see if this helps. i know when i had to unroot it worked and kept all my data but if you are taking it back to the store for warranty you may want to try the app called "triangle away". the app makes it so they cannot tell if you have flashed any ROMs.
check out the development section for how to go back to stock. once i got it back up and running..i also went to settings, privacy to do a system reset as i didnt want them to see superuser app when i took my phone in to the store.
I am still running the stock Rom, I just rooted the phone and flashed clockwork recovery.. I'm trying to do a factory data reset. To reset the phone back to the out of box state. I am under the assumption that when a phone is rooted and a custom recovery is flashed you can not just go into settings and factory reset your phone or you will brick it. Am I correct in this assumption? And if I am corect what I think I have to do is flash the original recovery, then I can reset the phone to factory settings which will wipe it back to stock and remove the root.. correct? I am just not sure where to get the factory recovery. Doesn't clockwork recovery replace the factory recovery?
Yes factory reset after having cwma will not restore back to stock. You''ll have to flash stock via computer or mobile Odin. The link provided above should be helpful

If you just want to unroot - removing Superuser.apk, su and busybox works.
CWM will stay though.
Then do factory reset and format internal sdcard. That will remove all user data.
So.. if you have clockwork recovery, and you factory reset the phone, it will put the factory recovery back?
I thought trying to reset while having a recovery flashed would lock up the phone...

If your still having trouble here, the answer this question & alot of others is at galaxys3root.com. It's one of Zedomax's sites that will give you clearly labeled & very easy to follow instructions to unroot for warranty return. He also includes a video where he will walk you step by step through the process. This is a great Site & you can find some great tutorials on the gs3, as well as rom reviews, so be sure to bookmark it! I hope I've helped
no no, i dont want to just follow instructions.. i am trying to understand CWM. i know how to use it, but every phone i ever rooted i was never able to reset back to factory settings because i was never sure if it would screw my phone up and i am trying to learn if it is safe t do. Does CWM replace the factory hboot or just install along with it? if i am rooted and i have CWM flashed, can i still reset to factory settings like normal? and if i do what will happen? will i still have root and CWM?? can i reset back to factory in ANY rom i flash safely? all that resetting back to factory does is remove accounts and .data files correct?? when you do a wipe in CWM it removes the entire OS, then you flash whatever rom you want.. when you reflash the factory ROM, unroot and remove CWM, hboot is still there correct? you dont have to reinstall hboot, right? you just have to make sure you reflashed the original ROM and uninstall root and CWM and then your back to original right?? i am just trying to understand it all thats all.. i know i can follow directions, but i am trying to learn. any site i find explaining CWM, it just explains what it does, i am trying to learn HOW it works so i can feel safe and i dont have to worry about bricking my phone. i was always too afraid to reset any phone i ever rooted because i never fully understood how CWM worked.. i always thought of our phones as a PC, where as a PC has a recovery partition with the software backed up in it, and i always think CWM wiped it clear, so if i try to reset the phone it will be looking for a partition that's not there. but now i think my PC analogy is wrong, and all a factory reset does is remove the .data files, not re install the software.. im trying to figure which one is true..

after flashing stock back to the device, it also goes back to stock recovery. after boot, you still have all apps ex. titanium but once u open it will say no root access. u can then go to settings, privacy, and factory reset to get rid of titanium, etc so it is complete stock. no one would be able to tell of your past..lol. i was rooted earlier in week and made mistake of resetting to factory reset before unrooting. nothing bad happened and i unrooted and factory reset to take it to the store hope this clears up stuff.
if you are returning to a store flashing a stock Rom was all I needed to do a warranty exchange.

Can someone help me with a factory data reset? Im having horrific battery problems since updating OTA from ICS to JB. I've tried all the usual suggestions and am getting nowhere so i understand a lot of folks do a factory data reset and it helps some..
So the current status of my device is stock ROM and rooted with CF. I have titanium installed. If i understand this correctly i need to is it backup all apps individually from within Titanium?
Is it then just a case of clicking factory data reset from within the S3 menu? I guess I'm on a custom recovery and not stock recovery because im rooted with CF? Does this make any difference to the factory data reset procedure?

Yes, just click it and you will have brand new jelly bean, but still rooted. Install titanium and restore all necessary applications. I did factory reset two day ago.
there are 2 ways to factory reset..
1. from the settings menu (i am sure you are aware of this)
2. from recovery; stock recovery or cwm recovery
if you are wondering what a cwm recovery is, it is a custom recovery for rooted phones.. so you can go over at the Original Development section and find the thread for this recovery.. you will have to use odin to flash

Great. Were you rooted before you did the reset? So having a custom recovery (if i have one as i'm rooted) wont effect this? All the titanium backups of the apps i take [presumably are fine as there stored on the SD card which doesn't get touched during factory data reset. Is this right?

you can still do a factory reset within the menu OR do a factory reset through Recovery (either Stock or Custom)
but since you are rooted, it is rather suggested to flash a custom recovery such as CWM Recovery

Great thanks for that. As I'm not really used to flashing things hence my noob questions. I rebooted into CWM and i can see the wipe date /factory reset option. Are there any other options i should run here i.e. wipe cache partition?
Final question after i do the wipe data/ factory reset im left with a clean build of JB with no apps or anything installed - i just pull these back from titanium 1 by 1 i guess?

For anyone who is interested the factory reset sorted my battery. I am now back to loosing approx 1% per hour overnight on 3g only (weakish signal), wifi off, location services on, google now off, fb, gmail push on. As good as it was before the JB update. I reckon a lot of folks will need to go down this route as its widespread about the JB battery issue. Luckily i was rooted so with titanium restore i got everything the way i wanted in only an hour or 2 - without it you could be tweaking apps for hours i.e. handsent sms!!
I did search how to factory reset but in those threads people generally ask how to KEEP files and settings etc., but I want to delete everything, settings, files, contacts etc. I want my phone to just as when I took it out of the box.
I'm on stock 4.0.4 ROM, rooted, and I did delete some stock Samsung apps, will I have them back when I factory reset. And is it better to do factory reset or just re-flash ROM via Odin.

Deleted apps won't come back to life. Factory rests turns your settings to presets (Android Version's Presets).
If you want an "out-of-the-box" ROM, you're gonna have to flash another one (as long as you didn't have a back up, which i'm guessing you don't).
If you wanna flash a new ROM, beware for the brick bug on 4.0.4.

After flashing a couple of Roms I found my recovery i made of the stock Rom now says android is updating everytime i turn it on.
are using TWRP and wiped Davlec cashe but now restart and upgrading again..
started with about 43 updates and this time after davlesc reset is 80 updates..
Ive only ever seen this when installing Gapps to a new build it does it once..
This recovery never had Gapps on it and shouldnt be doing this?
Ive searched but cant find specific advice on the S3..
Anybody can help?

This is because your cache is being rebuilt on every reboot. Most likely from restoring a stock rom after using custom roms. This is never a good idea. If you need to return to stock you should do it by Odin. Stock roms do not back up/restore properly.
so this only happens after you wipe Dalvik? That's what's supposed to happen
No its been doing it every time i turn phone on for ages.
Just i read somewhere to wipe davlec should fix it.but then doubled the amount of updates after...
anyway i think will re flash rom from odin again should be better.
was just wondering if there was something simple i didnt do..but i guess its cause i came from non stock rom before..

Are you sure that somewhere in twrp settings or anywhere else that you haven't set the device to wipe dalvik on each boot?

This has nothing to do with the issue. The issue is that the delvic cache is being deleted on reboot. A full wipe and reflash should fix him/her right up.
So ive been having issues with dhacker29's roms making my phone reboot and hang on the bootloader. Well the latest one, the selinux build which he put more bugs into an already screwed up reboot cycle it worked good when I first installed it, than it did one of its forced reboots.
Phone hasnt booted since, restored to previous rom that worked fine. Stock, all kinds of things tried. It just hangs on the motorola logo now.
Anybody got any ideas for me?
When you go back to other ROMs are you restoring apps and data along with them via Titanium Backup or another backup app? If so, that might be the cause. It may be something in your apps, not the ROM. And as always wipe cache and dalvik cache after any flash.
Just restoring back to a TWRP backup. not using tibackup or anything like that,
Ive tried wiping dalvik, Tried a factory reset on these backups. Even tried fix permissions. Still nothing.

If you wipe fully (yes I mean a full wipe) and then restore a back up from working phone and it just loops, chances are you had a bad backup
Just wipe clean and flash a new rom

I did some posting in the thread for the rom. 2 others had the same issue where none of there backups worked after flashing that rom version and after it crashed and rebooted it never came back. So I doubt it was a bad backup just something weird with the rom

Unless there is something very strange about this ROM (as in it corrupts other partitions but so highly doubtful), backups are 100% separate from another ROM, this means a full wipe will erase everything about you current ROM and then restoring a backup from a previous ROM will work, so long ad the backup is good and the wipe is clean.

I don't know. The rom does have a form or selinux in it so maybe that caused it. I don't know the specifics of what selinux does internally just what the goal is

Doesn't sound like it should brake anything, if the ROM won't boot for you that's one thing, but completely wiping your phone then flashing a new ROM should fix your issue.
I am highly suspect that the ROM in question could have done anything at all to your recovery or your backups.
You said you are using twrp, have you tried wiping/formating all partitions and then flashing a known working ROM? Does your phone have fast boot mode? If so this may be an even cleaner wipe to do prior to the flash

Again, without knowing anything about your phone, the ROM would not affect your bootloader/radio/recovery no firmware should be changed just by flashing a rom,.
If it won't boot after a full wipe then there is some other issue, but if you were able to fix things by flashing back to stock then good.
Without knowing more specifics about your phone or the ROM you had issues with I guess I can't help you any further, so long as your are up and running now I would suggest just to stay away from any ROM you have had issues with, make new backups and test them (yes fully wipe before a restore and being your phone has fastboot wipe there) and best of luck to you

RAZR hd... Cm10.1 on the post started by epinter.. You can read how others had the same issue. I had 4 backups and non boot looped. It would hang at the bootloader and never even make it to the boot animation. Apparently it's something nobody's seen before but me and 2 others there have experienced it. So it's not a 1 time fluke.
