Hello -
Here's the scenario... I upgraded from my EVO 3D to a newer phone with 4G LTE (Sprint). I'm still a Sprint customer, and I'm trying to find a use for my old EVO 3D. Since 4G LTE coverage is still pretty spotty in my area, and the Wifi "hotspot" doesn't seem to work (even with FoxFi) on my new phone, one thought was to turn my old EVO 3D into a Wifi hotspot that uses Sprint's Wimax network or just another device for someone in my family to use for Internet access.
So my question is, if I root my 3D, is it possible to "manually" enter the Wimax authentication such that my 3D can connect to the Wimax network? I know my not-activated phone can still see the 4G Wimax network because if I turn on the radio it connects and gets a signal. It just fails to route data over Wimax (throws an authentication error).
Has anyone tried this? My understanding is that Sprint piggy-backs Clear's Wimax network, and based off my understanding of Clear's authentication, it just comes down to an approved device ID and username/password.
Any thoughts? It would be pretty neat to have a mobile Wifi/Wimax "hotspot" for areas with bad or non-existent 4G LTE coverage (which is a ton of places with Sprint).
Thanks,
Well it can be done but what you must do is really on the hush hush with xda. It requires doing something they consider to be on the line of illegal so I doubt anyone will give you much help.

You need to clone your phone use Google as your friend for this one because it is ILLEGAL you shall not receive help on xda ever for this till it gets legal which is highly unlikely to happen

Tip on cloning. Do not erase the backdoor or your 3vo will revert back to original esn after awhile. Also cloning is a thin gray line but not exactly illegal as far as i have been able to dig up. Many guides for flashing phones to other networks use cloning. There are even some providers that will clone the phone for you. I really doubt they would do it if it was illegal.
nvm, got my answer

So I was thinking about the tbolt, and realized something that I believe is interesting:
It's pretty common knowledge that Verizon CDMA does not currently support simultaneous voice/data, a huge grievance for many a verizon iPhone owner. The Thunderbolt is touted to be the first device that can handle this function and will do so by handling voice over the CDMA network and data over the LTE network. Makes sense, sounds good and all right? BUT....I was thinking about coverage of LTE and how it's pretty scarce for now and was wondering what would happen if you were not in an LTE area and using the Tbolt? Wouldn't the absence of the LTE network effectively stifle your ability to use data while on the phone?
Does anyone have any info on this or remember reading anything about it? It seems to me that it is entirely possible that the Tbolt will have the same limitations over simultaneous voice/data as the iPhone and other smartphones as long as the user is in a non-4G/LTE area. I am lucky enough to live in a 4G/LTE area so this wouldn't be a huge factor I guess but some people were really looking forward to having that capability.
Unlike all the rumors, the phones has two radios.
1 - 1x voice/data radio
2 - EVDO / LTE radio
The phone will do simultaneous voice and data in both 4G and 3G areas. Only issues is that two radios means increased battery drain

Your post makes no sense bud. The phone has the following specs:
CDMA 1X/EVDO Rev.A: 800/1900MHz
CDMA LTE - 700MHz
Rev A Capable
The phone has one of 2 possibilities:
1. In an area with no 4G coverage, the phone will simply not work as advertised. It will act just like any other 3G smartphone.
2. The more likely option, and I say likely mostly because they like to avoid class actions: Verizon partly delayed the phone in order to upgrade the towers and networks with the ability to process 3G data and calls simultaneously.

if that second option were true, wouldn't that mean that every phone currently running on 3G (iphones and droids alike) would all gain the ability to run simultaneous data and voice? that sounds very nice indeed.
i don't have any sources but i believe i remember reading that the nature of CDMA and how it connects prohibits simultaneous voice/data as opposed to however GSM operates. sorry for such broad information but i'm not exactly a wireless carrier expert. if what you said is true though and they found some way to upgrade it, that would be awesome for all those on verizon 3G.
my skeptical side though is saying that verizon is no saint and would just respond that simultaneous voice/data is a feature specifically for 4G service and if you aren't in a 4G area tough break and wait for 4G/LTE to roll out near you.
Actually VZW recently did a software upgrade for their infrastructure to allow simultaneous voice and data over EVDO Rev A and the Thunderbolt is their first handset with the radio capable of supporting it. From what I've read it's a hardware thing so they can't update firmware in other phones like the iPhone to support it. I can't link to any articles from the XDA App but read any of the major Android blogs as they've been reporting about it for the past couple days or do a Google search for SVDO.

BAAMM! lol
That is the rumor Verizon is not using 1X advanced, so the only way that simultaneous voice and data works if you have two radios which are capable of transmitting at the same time. This is why only select 4G phones support SVDO.
As I said earlier, SVDO will work in both 4G and 3G areas because of the dual radios on-board.

The Thunderbolt have SVDO support, because it's using a SVDO capable chipset. Dual radios doesn't have anything to do with it, but only with CDMA/ 4G LTE handoffs, which is similar to Sprint's 4G phones. SVDO works on a 1X and 1X Advanced capable device, so didn't need to switch to 1X Advanced in order for it to work, though they have been some 1X advanced codecs for a while. Verizon wanted this including in their iPhone 4 phones so bad, but it just wasn't ready.

Ok, so I was interested in checking out the LTE speeds and wanted to test out the ability to do SVDO. I went to my local Verizon store and realized that My area doesn't have 4G yet. Duh! lol. And when inspecting the phone itself I could not find a way to turn on or any mention of LTE in any way anywhere on the phone! Hmmmm. So then I tried to test SVDO. I called one t-bolt with the other display t-bolt and then tried to surf. Newp. no can do. The call went thru so Its all setup but maybe it had no sim card?? I didn't check. Maybe my area doesn't have SVDO yet either? Can anyone now confirm simultaneous voice and data??? Now that people have got the phone in their hands now.
I am not in a 4G area and I can confirm the phone does voice and data simultaneously, very well, I might add

You know my verizon rep said a funny thing today when I asked him about the voice/data at the same time on 3G...he actually said "we don't guarantee that will work yet and that the network is still being worked on in some places to enable this feature for certain devices like the Thunderbolt" I had already tried it on the demo TB so I wasn't worried but maybe that's why it's not working for you.
I can also confirm that in a non 4g area it does both voice and data at the same time... nice feature I didn't expect.
Hmm, yeah I guess as usual my area is slow at upgrading the network. Man, if Verizon would pay my etf on Sprint I would be all over that thing.

I work for verizon and you are right they have changed on the network side making simultanious voice and data through both 4G and 3G and it was done on the network not on the phone itself. Now I don't know if this was the reason for the month and a half delay or not but makes sense. From what I heard from my friend in the testing department it had to do with battery.
I don't know about you guys but I really love the fact that all the naysayers that simultaneous voice and data is impossible can finally shut up. LOL

I have a question if it is possible to flash a radio that will allow the atrix 4g to access the 4g Lte network?? I just heard att is going to be adding their version of the so called 4g lte network to our area and I realize that now that my phone is not a true 4g phone more or less an upgraded version of 3g. Since I was under the impression I could access the lte network and now I know I can't I am wondering if there would be a way to flash a radio that would allow me to access the lte network. Thanks for any information guys and girls!!!

From my understanding the Atrix is a 4g phone but At&t is just now getting there 4g or lte software up and running in some areas so its not the phone its the network that's not 4g
no, theres no LTE radio inside the atrix.
Before the LTE roll out, HSPA+ was considered 4G. The Atrix has HSPA+ therefore "4G". New bill/law is making carriers changing the ways they're advertising 4g now. LTE is the "new" 4G.

Welcome to the world of "we made the same technology a bit faster so we are going to call it 4G so we dont get left in the dust". 4G just means 4th Generation. If it is different enough from prior technology, then it is a new generation, but the various "4G" offerings (LTE, HSPA+, wiMax) are no more compatible than the 3G (EVDO, EDGE) are/were.
The idea behind getting everyone to use the name 4G synonymously with LTE is because that is where everyone is evolving to. They wont be able to pick some transitionary technology and pretend that they are caught up.

Actually, some speeds need to be reached for the carriers/phone makers to call it 4G. These peek speed limits were set by the international telecommunication union (ITU).
" peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 Mbit/s for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users)"
search for 4G on wikipedia for more information
Yea just a little bummed I wont be able to access 4gLTE speeds in my atrix 4g... I was just misinformed when I bought the phone I guess. Goes to show you how much research you hablve to do in order to find out the truth. Is it possible to flash a 4GLTE radio to the atrix or are we "SOL"? our phones definitely don't lack the speed as the atrix still is up there with the brand new phones.

The ITU declared AT&T's HSPA+ as 4G along with T-Mobile's HSPA+ and Verizon's LTE network. Prior to that, not even LTE or Wimax were considered 4G.

Consider this.............Atrix 4G is a cat 10 device. This means capable of 14.4Mbits/s down and 5.76Mbits/s up. The phone is not holding us back, the networks are. If they delivered enough bandwidth and coverage we would be able to utilize these speeds. Because they don't, we are stuck with what they give/throttle us at. In a nutshell, the Atrix is capable of A LOT more speed than our providers allow.
4G means nothing!!
4G doesn't mean anything anymore. None of these networks give the speeds that 4G was supposed to give. LTE Advanced is going to be the game changer in my eyes. http://www.itbusinessedge.com/cm/blogs/weinschenk/like-lte-you-aint-seen-nothin-yet/?cs=49064

Great question... With 4G, it didn't even feel like a mobile data connection... Hopefully LTE auto-searches and quickly connects while using the same or less battery.
Also, everyone, the 30mb/s won't stay for long... Once more towers are active and more lte phones are available, which is probably this summer, speeds will be down again.

Hmm so you have to search for it on Verizon LTE devices as well?!
It is most likely a placebo but I never use 4G because of the fact I feel as if it is like a wifi that can go away or weaken in reception depending on where I go...I like the GSM way of handling 3.5G/4G
*I have had T-Mobile for 6 years, just currently switched to a iPhone 4S with sprint in January...regretting it :|
Personally, I believe Sprint is going the wrong way with their plans for their mobile network. Now, before you discredit this post, hear me out...
Sprint is the #3 carrier in the US. There is absolutely no way they'll be able to trade blows with AT&T or Verizon as far as their mobile network or subscriber base. They will always be playing catch up to those two and even T-Mobile with their HSPA+ network. Now, here's where I believe Sprint should go:
Do the initial roll-out of LTE as they have announced. Immediately begin switching their network from EV-DO revision A to revision B and start focusing on their 3G network. I honestly believe that Sprint would be better served if they could provide a consistent high-speed 3G network; even more-so than they would be if they begin moving away from WiMAX and toward LTE. LTE should be in the cards, however I believe if they were able to upgrade their 3G network (which would be supported by ALL of their current phones) and start promoting the nation's only 3G network with 5Mb/s down and 2 Mb/s up and the strongest voice network in America, they'd be in better shape in a year than where they will be if they continue their current plans.
Just my 2 cents. Anybody have any thoughts?

5 mbps down on CDMA? Good luck. Sprint isn't just upgrading to LTE. They are doing a huge overhaul of their 3G network using lots of options including massively improved backhaul. From the speed tests I've seen in network vision areas so far, their 3G network should be on par with verizons network as far as speed goes. Coverage will be improved by about 20% as well. I agree they should upgrade to EVDO revision B, although I'm not sure what upgrades would be involved in that.
Back on the topic of the first post though, hot damn. I know speeds will drop once more people start using it, but those are impressive initial results.

From the little bit I've read about EV-DO revision B, it wouldn't involve any hardware upgrades. It would only involve a "firmware upgrade", if I remember it correctly. But yeah, 30+ Mb/s down is pretty sick. Even after "full-spectrum saturation", if we could get 10Mb/s in half of their 3G footprint, I'd be satisfied.

That is the reason that Sprint is only advertising speeds on LTE just below what Verizon is advertising. For the most part people in unsaturated markets will see speeds exceeding 20Mbps down on a good day. And those speeds may even hold up that high once Sprint starts releasing LTE on 800MHz next year as well. And according to some stuff that people have gotten access to, Sprint will be setting up phones to dynamically switch between LTE on 800, 1900, & 2500 so as to keep cell sites from being over-burdened. It will be a while before Sprint's LTE starts to suffer from over-crowding.

Sprint last fall flat out stated that they are not going to roll out EV-DO B. Network Vision will max out the capabilities of EV-DO A while they roll-out LTE on 1900 and 800. After that is complete and LTE Advanced is rolling out, they will be able to start taking existing 1900 EV-DO carriers and transition them to LTE as well. I expect that eventually, EV-DO will be phased out for a completely IP-based voice network using VoLTE. And Sprint is even releasing some devices with SVDO on EV-DO A so you can talk and surf at the same time until LTE is covering their entire network footprint.

I'll say it over and over again. Sprint doesn't have a 4G network. Also, Verizon has 50+M down and 12+M up
Then again, at this point in time who needs more than 3-4M down. just upgrade to rev-b and done.
This is a common thing for my WiMAX at the house but WiMAX is so freaking glitchy.

1900mhz is going to be set up 5x5, but no confirmation if 800 and 2.5 will be set up on 5x5 though. More than likely they will be set up on 10x10 since there is a ****load more spectrum on there, especially 2.5GHz. There is 120mhz of spectrum in the 2.5GHz frequency that Clearwire owns.

Ummmm, well obviously you will only get 4g if your area has 4g Wimax. If it doesn't, there's no way to make 4g magically appear...
more importantly right now boost is not provisioning other 4g phones besides their crappy design 4g. so short answer no long answer no but if they would just let users use clean esn sprint phones on their network then you could. because you cant copy the wimax crap from a evo design or 3d because someone hasent figured out the rsa codes.
This may be a lame question, but if 4G becomes active in my area, is there anything i need to do? or will the 4G notification just turn on when a signal is detected?

Its not lame, its how you learn. In theory, no.
There are settings for CDMA and LTE under the mobile networks area so assuming you are set to CDMA / LTE, running stock and you are close enough to a LTE tower you should switch to LTE automatically. If you search there are a number of tweaks and additional settings also available in case you aren't successful.
If you never change your mobile network mode from cdma/lte in your settings then it should automatically connect if you ever get lte in your city.
The above posters answered the question, but if you would like to know more about when LTE might be available in your area head on over to www.s4gru.com

so i don't really know alot about the CDMA/LTE stuff... but on the original Evo the 4G was on the CDMA network correct? The New EVO just has 4G on the LTE network? Meaning if i was able to pick up 4G in my area with the original EVO i won't be able to get 4G with my new EVO LTE until they add LTE in the area?
am I understanding this correct?
Correct, 4g was on the wimax network, now 4g is lte. Wimax is still available, it will eventually be phased out.
That sucks... I live in bumf so doubt I'll have LTE anytime soon... But at least this phone is still awesome
