I have a brand new GS4 on Verizon. I have not rooted because it is a company phone and they will not allow it. I love the phone but the sound is disappointing me quite a bit. I have a GS3 as well and using the same headphones (Beats - Powerbeats) i can almost make my ears bleed when at full volume which is just how iv been comparing the two.
With my GS4 however, the headphones are at about the right volume when cranked all the way up but there is more. When im listening to music on the GS4 at full volume, about once ever 15 min or so it will increase the volume to what i feel like is the proper max volume for the phone. After about 3-4 seconds, it goes back down. So when im riding my bike, all of a sudden i get blown away for a few seconds.
I dont need the volume to be higher for my headphones but i have a nice stereo in my car and when i connect to that, i can tell that it doesnt sound near as good. Any ideas? Let me know if you need more info. Thanks!
I heard that the update fixes this. I get it too. Verizon told me early July the update would come out.

Good to know! Thanks!
I hope we aren't the only ones with this bcuz I didn't really notice it until this thread. When I listen to my Spotify it will be loud for a bit then it will get all quiet. It's weird.

I am getting a ReZound tomorrow and I am feeling a little strange about it now because of all the negative comments about the audio hissing problem.
So who actually has this problem and who doesn't. Do the poll.
Update: I got my RZ today and...NO HISSING !!!! I am so relieved.

Have it
Don't care because it only happens when there isn't music and when there isn't music I'm not listening

Maybe is all I can say.
Don't have it, never had it. If I ever did have it, I never noticed it. This is the greatest phone in the history of technology. lol
I've only noticed it on ics roms in between tracks or if no music is playing.

Before the OTA I could hear the cpu grinding or something IF I turned media volume all the way off and hit play. If the volume was up I did not hear it over the music. It was never a hiss or a squeal.
Since the OTA I do not hear it at all. And due to my work I have to be able to hear unwanted noise in tracks and remove it so I believe I would notice it.
To be honest, some of the descriptions of noise that I've seen posted I find hard to believe. Not trying to call anyone a liar or anything but that's how I feel when I read them, some of them seem exaggerated.
Also, keep in mind that the people that post on this forum are anal about their phones and those that have no problems don't generally go posting about that, so what seems like a lot of complaints about noise is really a much smaller percentage when you consider all the people who have a Rezound that never even visit a forum about the phone and those that do visit but don't post about the issue since they don't have it.

I had it, and it was bad.
The OTA radio fixed it entirely, which I do not understand at all.
Doesn't make any sense to me, but it's definitely gone. Boggles the brain.
I'd have bet anything that they were talking smack when they said they were going to fix it with software. I'd have lost.
the update didnt fix the hissing for I...
No hissing here.
I've never played music on my phone so I just put one MP3 on there and tried. It appears I dont have the his. It sounded pretty good.
for me it only hisses when its hooked up to my car via auxiliary cable and when no music is playing. when I'm just using headphones or the speaker i have no problems at all
I just noticed a little wierd thing on the s3. When I have the headphones plugged in and I am not playing anything(no audio), everytime I hit one of the capacitive keys there's a hissing sound which lasts for 4-5 seconds. Can anyone confirm this? And why does the phone produce a "running fan" like noise when a capacitive key is used?
It's very annoying to use the phone with the headphones plugged in because of this noise.

How is it that only my s3 shows this behaviour? It's something you will notice when you are in a silent surrounding. I am still wondering what the capacitive keys have to do with this noise.

Its because the SIII is programmed to turn on your sound when a key is hit... this happens and goes away after a few seconds as aforementioned... I have this issue on my SII Epic Touch some times.
WiMaxed away from my Samsung® Galaxy™ SII Epic™ 4G Touch™ SPH-D710 running the CyanogenMod9™ Alpha 5-Pre1 with the MotoInspried Theme. (I'm a sucker for a MotoUI but like this phone better.)
Awaiting my upgrade for the Sprint® Samsung® Galaxy™ S III SPH-L710 because it's the SIII and it's on an unlimited data network.
Sounds like it's interference caused by poor shielding. The Note suffered horribly from this. I was hoping Samsung had fixed this issue, but maybe they didn't. My AT&T One X is super quiet and has no interference at all. Hopefully the LTE variant of the S3 will be better.

Each of the 4 HTC One Xs (International version) I had a couple of weeks ago had dreadful shielding issues (among many other problems) when plugged in for charging. I can't say I've seen the aforementioned interference on my S3 though.
h3llboy911, does this happen with all pairs of headphones you've tried, and does it get worse when it's plugged in to charge?

Galaxy s3 hissing sound
I have exactly the same issue on my galaxy s3.
It is most noticeable in a silent room with headphones in. The hissing occurs even if you mute all sound and you touch a key, a widget, capacitive key etc.... You can even hear the hissing when you play music on low.
Is it a hardware problem or a software problem?
can confirm i've noticed this also
Confirmed with LTE version (i747) - Happens even in tinfoil with all radios off, guessing when this happens its tracking through the headphones.
With 80 ohm headphones its MUCH less noticeable.

Mine thoes this as well! I don't know whether this is normal, or a HW or SW problem...
You can even hear the same sound when not listening to any music and when you're earphones are UNplugged! Just push a capacitive button and listen to your speaker; exactly the same noise!

It seems to be caused whenever something accesses the audio. Going to settings>sound and unchecking touch sounds seems to reduce this happening for me.
Most of the time it happens during calls. I'll answer the phone and hear a slight high pitched squeal (typically fades into the background to where the phone is still usable) that can become screeching feedback if my hand covers the microphone just right. It's hurt my ear unexpectedly more than once.
Sometimes it will happen even when I'm not in a call.
I've experienced it on Linaro roms running CM9 and I think also CM10.
I installed a sense rom and haven't had the problem since.
Anyone else experiencing this?

How unfortunate. I really like AOSP, except this, and this is a dealbreaker. I can't stand listening to squealing every time I answer a call and always fearing getting blasted by loud feedback with the phone near my ear.

I'm not 100% sure about this but there may be a workaround or something if you feel like thread surfing a little bit. My phone has never been quite as extreme so I never really paid attention. Good Luck
Turn your earpiece volume down, that way it won't feed back through.
I get scratchy audio on CM during calls, but never had anything hurt my ear. Do you have any dsp manager or anything boosting the audio volume?
And yes, Sense has a noise canceler built into the dialer that works much better than AOSP, it's one of the tradeoffs atm.

So I decided to give Googlr voice another try just so I could get away from VZWs Visual Voicemail app. I used Voice for my voicemails before right after it first came out but it easnt up to snuff so I switched back to VZW and now that I am wanting to make the change to Google Voice I am having nothing but problems with the volume.
When I first used it I noticed the volume was extremely low on voicemail playback. I used my google-fu but was unable to find a fix for the issue. The volume is so low that I cant make out what is being said most of the time. I get absolutely no sound unless I put it on speakerphone and then I have to hold it up to my ear to even hear anything, and even then it is barely audible.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?
I should probably note that all my volumes are maxed out, but no matter what I change them to it doesnt seem to affect the volume for better or worse.

Though I can't speak for google voice, you could always try youmail. It is a visual voice mail app that works pretty good. Though I dont use voice dictation, the paid version has it.

Had this problem when I first installed. Seems to happen when Media volume was set to max. Back it off one or two notches and it may work, it did for me.
I will give that a try tomorrow when I can get someone to leave me a message. Sorry I didnt reply sooner, we had a tornado come thru in Alabama. They said it was 70 MPH straight line winds but I actually saw the funnel cloud pass by my house and there was quite a bit of damage, a couple of 7 foot long 2x4's straight thru some chicken house walls and all kinds of other ****. Also I havent had power so I havent been able to chargw my phone....
Anyway, ill test it out and report back tomorrow afternoon, I just wish I could figure out why its acting so wonky. I really really like it niw but that volume issue is so bad that if I cant fix it I will have ti switch to something else.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Premium HD app
I may end up having to switch to that. I really enjoy Google Voice but its ridiculous when I cant even hear the voicemails.....
Thank you for the suggestion

I just went a borrowed my girlfriends phone to test it out. If I adjust the volume while listening to the message on speakerphone it works, the downside is that I like my volume all the way up and in order to hear the voicemail I have to turn the volume down to the halfway point to hear it.. I really dont understand that but at least I got it working! Thank you so much!

i've got one coming in the mail, but im worried about a couple things people dont like. I'm wondering how you guys are dealing with them. i hear the speakerphone isnt too good, are you guys using volume boost or some kind of app to make it louder. im also hearing people are having issues with knock on, having to do it 3 or 4 times before the screen comes on.
i think my biggest concern, and its not an actual problem with the phone. is LGs drop in value so fast, ill probably play it with for a week and stick with my s4 till the phones done dropping in price in about a month.

Coming from the Droid Incredible, then the Galaxy Nexus, then this - well, the tech has come a long way. I should probably post this in a separate thread, but do the buttons being on the back bother anyone? Because they don't bother me at all. I was a little surprised actually.
its good to hear that from more and more people. i imagine when you click on the back button it pushes the phone forward because of the force it takes the push the button but sounds like no ones having an issue with it.
I also love this phone

Speakerphone & call quality works fine for me, but each person seems to have diff exp when it comes to them. Honestly, this phone could produce NO SOUND and i'd prolly STILL use it, lol
as for Knock On, it takes a few awhile to a) realize you have to tap on a "clear spot" on any homescreen, not over an icon or you will launch it, little bit of learning curve, ppl soooo exaggerate... b) it seems to respond MUCH better to 'tap" from fingertips, not a "knuckle"...And most imp, if you find always, "looking for a cleared area to tap" to turn your device off, just double tap anywhere up by notifications, and it works EVERYTIME!
Do not be worried, within 10 minutes of opening the box, i can almost guarantee you will be totally sold on this phone...
Those "negative Nellies" are prolly the type that HAVE to find something to complain about...Every forum has 'em!
Ms D
I don't really use speaker phone so I can't comment, Bluetooth has worked well for me though. As far as knock on, if I have had my screen off for a long time, I find one initial touch and then doing knock on works 100 percent of the time.
And I actually like lg's keyboard! No one has mentioned it.
Sent from my LG-D800 using xda app-developers app
Yeah the speaker is a little weak in my opinion. Other than the HTCone i would say that all phone speakers are mediocre.. some are just a little better and some a little worse... I would say the lg g2's speaker is in the middle.. and if anything a little worse.. still it works and does the job for me. As far as Knock on/off .. It's a fantastic feature.. if the screens been off for 20-30 minutes it works the first try.. if it's been hours since you've touched your phone it seems like it takes 2 sets of knocks.. not a big deal though.. awesome feature! I've been transferring info/data/progs from my gs2 the last couple days and have noticed myself knocking on the GS2.. pretty funny but it's seems natural even after the first day!
Love the LG keyboard, I was using a leaked version on a rooted Optimus G and its the best kb I've used and it comes with 4 skins I believe. Knock on and off is imo the best feature out of all that any company has come up with in the last batch of flagships. I'm talking dynamic notifications, and always listening crap. Also nice to see they use the only feature I actually used on my old S4, smart screen to detect your still looking at screen and display stays on. I love the drag up feature to access quick access items, they added tons of options to the launcher more in line with an aftermarket one to a degree with icon changing, screen transitions and such.
Speaker isn't the worst, but it isn't the best either. Scale of 1-10 I would give it a 6 in accordance with my experience with other phones. It's very usable but won't win any awards for speaker sound, like the HTC One.
As far as knock on; when the screen is on, "tap off" works flawlessly when tapping the bar on the top or any open unused area on the screen. When "tapping on" the phone I tap three times and it works every time. Sometimes double tap doesn't work the first time when the screen is off.
