You can also remove some things from the zip file before you flash it.
Look in /system/app/ and /data/app/

You can use either Romcleaner or Titanium Backup. Only use Titanium if you know exactly which files you want removed, or you may leave behind a whole pile of useless apps that require something you uninstalled for them to run properly.

You could use an auto root from androidcentral or learn adb. It's smart to know adb incase something goes wrong, or you need logcats, etc.

In other news, the pre loaded apps don't do anything negative

My goal was to use ##2627#, which someone said in another thread can alter sms alert options. This epst didn't work. Any help? Not for my phone? Thanks.

Really, I just did that right now and loaded that screen. Checked the cmas box on it.
There is a thread in the evo 4G section about hacking your evo 3g speeds I forget the exact name. But if you hit the paper clips icon on it, there are like a dozen epst apks. Any of them should work. I'm at work right now otherwise I'd link you.

So you got the ##2627# menu? Unless I'm doing something wrong, seems like it won't work. I'm using root explorer, putting the epst.apk in /system/app, changing permissions, a reboot and that menu won't pop.
Ill also put the apk in /app, then touch to install it. If you can get the menu, I want the menu! :-(

Well I've tried about five epst.apk's ...then I messed with some XML in mms.apk which bootlooped me. There are options in some XML files for the default state of the alerts which is enabled. I'd like to edit some XML, see if that does any good.

Yes and no for me. Unless I'm doing something wrong, I always have to tell it to have root privileges to do anything. It's stored in SU but when ever I try to delete or mod something I need to mount as r&w again.

I'm trying to replace the custom handcent notification icons with the emoticons. But I can't for the life of me locate where they are. For instance my girlfriend loves cows. I want to be able to set hers as the cow smiley etc. Anyone know what folder they are in?
Thanks

Yes Handcent is one of the apps that is made to crash if edited in anyway at all. So it is not modable.

After failing for months I contacted the handcent team and was informed that The way it was made was to self corrupt when ever it is modified. Even swapping images with a zip archiver corrupts the apk. Maybe 6.0 will be different
