Got a factory refurb for $70 shipped off ebay. Love it except for the ghosting which makes small text on black backgrounds unreadable until you stop scrolling. Should I exchange it and try another one? I can install my backup on it since I have it just the way I want it. It'll only cost me about $4 to ship it back but I'll have to use my old broken Dinc for about 10 days. I could just buy another one and send the worst one back but that will cost me another $6.
Just curious,, what are you reading while scrolling or what app?
I find it hard to read while scrolling on anything... pc/ipad/laptop

Any menu with a black background such as DroidWall. I'd call it extreme jitter. Even the apps drawer does this and the icons flicker.Fortunately, the stock rom (which I actually like) uses a white background. It also does it on black text on white especially on the FM radio when flipping thru the channels. The large black numbers smear.
Apps drawer does not look stable like this at 6:30.

Sorry this is my old phone, devil kernel is in one of the threads I think android development but, if you just want to over clock on the ROM your using just download trickster mod(play store free) and go over a page or two then towards bottom there's CPU min and max put max higher then click upper right hand corner check mark then hit the three dots, select set on boot then enable and hit check mark again for good measure and your done!

I am constantly playing with and 'tweakin' my Streak and have put together what I think is a good, lite, fast, and stable rom. I made this for my own use and decided to share it with the rest of you.
I started with 354 then removed all apps that could be downloaded from the market. I also removed alot of stuff that I didn't think was necessary (such as all the verification*.apk's, don't even know what they are). There are only 17 apps in the drawer on a fresh install! I added DJ Steve's kernel and some memory tweaks from using the HTC Kitchen. VTL Launcher ADW is the included launcher as well as Swype for the keyboard. There are also some customization provided by UOT Kitchen as well as a modified Settings.apk that I got from somewhere on here. I'd love to thank whoever made it, but I have lost track so if it's your's---thank you!
I'm getting Quadrant scores in the 1400's and battery life seems pretty decent. I gave up on Quadrant scores. My best guess would be low 800's for this version. I have found through trial and error that higher Quadrant scores mean less stability, and honestly I can't tell the difference in real world performance between an 800 QS and a 1400 QS. I can't tell you exact battery life because I haven't hardly put this thing down since I installed this.
I am not an expert by no means and have only gotten these results from tinkering and trial and error. I think this is good, but am open to suggestions for improving it.
I started off by installing stock 354 using stock recovery, then installed this using Streakmod recovery and did a Factory Reset (Dell's, not Streakmod's). I have had no issues so far.
I have seen this posted before and liked it so I'm going to use it here: If you find a bug, you get to keep it. If this breaks your Streak, you get to keep the pieces. Obviously installing a custom rom breaks your warranty, and I am not responsible for whatever happens if you install mine.
Thanks to everyone whose ideas I stole/used/borrowed/whatever. Without the true experts on this board, I wouldn't have had anything to tinker with.
What works: Everything I can think of
What doesn't work: Waiting for you to tell me. The time in the status bar is black and the status bar is blackish...makes it hard to see. I don't know why and haven't yet figured out how to fix this. If someone has a link to a good tutorial and I can make it work, I'll be happy to resolve it!
So without further ado, I present Streakin' 354v1 354 v1.1:
http://www.multiupload.com/1MVM3O34AN v1.1 *newest*
http://www.multiupload.com/BHI4Y4XD69 I'm leaving this link for those that prefer v1.
I do intend on maintaining this rom and tweakin' it more based on recommendation, more stuff that I learn, etc. I do have a full time job, so even though I want to answer questions immediately, it's not always practical. If it takes me a while to respond, I apologize in advance.
Edit 09/24/11 - If you prefer landscape mode, simply flash the attached file below in recovery. Be sure to wipe cache and dalvik-flash after flashing. After doing this it took 5-6 minutes for my phone to boot, but it did....eventually. You may want to backup first! I also added a portrait mode file in case you decide you don't like landscape after all. Enjoy.
Edit 09/25/11 - It was pointed out to me that this ROM does not have a init.d folder. I forgot to add it, although the support to run scripts in init.d is there. Until the next version comes out, using Root Explorer, or similar, create a folder named init.d in /system/etc/ and set the permissions to rwx,r_x,r_x. That should be all you need. Thanks.

I didn't like VTL Launcher either, until I went into the settings and turned the left and right dockbars off. Now it's not much different than ADW and rightfully so, since it's based off of it.

The rom running well
I have changed the launcher to go launcher after loading the rom running fine

Try "orientation control" by "coin soft" to lock your streak in whatever orientation you want. I've got it on my streakdroid and it works fine
Just an observation here. You might want to contemplate recreating this ROM using 360 as a base instead of 354 due to the more complete language support in the former compared to the latter.

I had contemplated using that rom as my base, but noticed everyone had better battery life with 354. 360 was listed as being an "update" 351, which gave me horrible battery life. If someone can tell me different as far as battery, I don't think it would be difficult to redo this based on one of the others (360 or maybe 364?)
Grateful your work!
Grateful your work! I am pleased that contains the settings for Japanese.

OK, I removed DJ Steve's kernel and replaced some files that were changed to accomodate it. My quadrant scores are now in the 800's and I'll report back with the 'feel' of the device and stability over the next day or so. I love seeing high scores, however must admit I've never really noticed a difference in day to day use with the higher scores. I will take stability over high benchmark scores, but will take noticeable speed increase over a little stability if that makes sense.

Hey all,
Searched the forums for this and found a bit of discussion, but not a fix.
I know some people are using swiftkey x and not having display problems, but for me it's borked, no matter what i do. I've tried clearing app data, removing and reinstalling etc - nothing seems to work. Settings pages occupy about 2/3 of the screen real estate, centered horizontally and stuck to the top of the screen vertically, and when the keyboard is in use, it takes up 80% of the screen but mostly with black empty space. For this latter reason, it's pretty much unusable.
My carrier is Orange UK, but my handset is a retail/SIM unlocked stock ROM. It is up to date with OTA updates.
Is there a fix for this? Or am i screwed?
Thanks all, and apologies if this question has already been answered - i did try in earnest to find it.

I'm using the betas and havent seen such a problem, be it on stock, cm7 or customized blur roms. Maybe try spare parts and disable that legacy app fix.

No worries The market just like you. In fact i've been a SwiftKey customer for a long long time. My old SwiftKey licence seemed to transfer over to SwiftKey X when it was formally released. I did have the X beta, and at first it was fine, then after one particular update it started with this screen problem, and has been that way ever since, even after the official first release.

This sounds hopeful! I haven't heard of spare parts but im assuming its some sort of tweaking program? I can use it to disable some sort of legacy fix for older, none qHD apps? is that right?
EDIT: I installed spare parts but just have the following options on a settings-style screen:
battery history
battery information
usage stats
window anims
transition anims
fancy input anims
fancy rotation anim
end button behavior
haptic feedback
compatibility mode
wifi sleep policy
activity/process management
brightness mode
font size
show compass in maps
Only one which looks promising is compatibility mode?
EDIT2: Thanks a lot for that crnkoj - got it working! For all who're reading this thread and want to know: use spare parts to disable compatibility mode!
Sure, np. And ye, i meant compatibility fix just didn't remember the correct name.
Does anyone else notice the ugly presentation of letters? Text looks blurry around the edges, kind of like when you have a picture with text in it and you increase jpeg compression. You get those tiny artifacts around the edges of small objects, this is what text on the S3 reminds me of.
I know it has a pentile Display, but can this be somehow improved? I had the syiah kernel and was under the impression it was less severe. I think there was a tweak under the "screen" section that did something to aleviate the problem. But maybe I'm just imagining things...
I'm completley on stock and unrooted now so I can't go back and check
Any input on this would be appreciated!
Btw: The fuzzy text can best be seen with black text on gray background, .e.g. when wieving stuff in play store!
Ok, I believe the setting that made the fonts look better is called "mDNIe Sharpness Tweaks". Is there a way to get this without syiah? I have ordered the i9305 and siyah kernel is not supported sadly
Choosing the a different font can help in some situations. I do not know if this is relevant in your situation but it is worth mentioning.

There is no CM for the i9305 and probably never will be. However the Perseus kernel supports the i9305 and it has the very same tweak!
Just wondering, no one else is feeling like text on stock rom looks utter crap? It literally hurts my eyes because they try to refocus all the time because of the blurry text. Bad Samsung, just bad

Have you tried changing the Screen Mode (Settings >> Display) to Dynamic and turning off Adaptive Display? I find this helps with overly sharp text a lot.
P.S. I used to use the Perseus kernel on the i9300 and it didn't have a simple on/off sharpness tweak, I think putting Amount on -128 and Radius & Threshold at +128 was the closest I got.
Being without my dev laptop for a couple days, I'm bored - lol.
I was wondering if we know how many hardware revisions of the Fascinate there are out there. I know they all claim to be i500.04, but I've had enough of them to know they are certainly not all created equally.
From the ones I've had/have, the screen seems to be the tip-off. I can account for three different "models" myself:
1. The "good ones". These are black and have the nice screens. Fairly accurate color temperature, very bright with bold colors. These also seem to run the fastest and are the most likely to be able to overclock to 1.4GHz successfully. Also for me, the least amount of trouble with Wifi enable/disable when that was a problem. These are the ones my wife and I got from Verizon back in 9/2010, and I've gotten hold of an official Samsung refurb recently that fits this category. The one Fassy I bricked was like this as well (so sad, stupid corrupt boot.bin)
2. The "warm ones". I have two of them, they aren't my favorites. Black case, but a very warm (red) color temperature screen that tends to be less bright and lacks the color oomph. Mine have notably slower performance than what I call the good ones above, and had something different about Wifi that required a special change to stop the enable/disable problems. I use them as clocks and as Sonos device controllers, always on 24/7 in docks, and they serve that purpose well.
3. The "cool ones". Both white and black cases, although I've only seen the black ones as display models. Every white one I've seen fits this category. These seem to run well, but the screens are terribly cool (blue), to the point of being off-putting to me. Unfortunately I gave the one I had away before I started working on GeeWiz 3/4, but I don't recall it being as slow the "warm ones". It was the screen color that made me not want to use it.
Silly topic, I know. Just wondering... lol

I've relegated both of these for alarm clock/Sonos controller purposes since they suck so bad, and I don't care if the screen gets worn out from being on the clock DayDream 24/7. I'd shoot them if I didn't have a use for them!

if you root you can change ro.sf.lcd_density in /system/build.prop to a lower number like 480 looks very nice. However the LG custom apps will not work.
You could change the LCD density, if you're root. That's what I did with my S4 to make things look smaller.

edit build prop. or use a dpi changer.. you need to root tho
Well
Be careful on the DPI settings. Gotta be root, and I used a DPI changer. It worked fine. Until I couldn't get my actual phone app or contacts to work. I got around this by getting an app, but I was still having issues. I thought it was because I went thru the system and deleted a bunch of apps, accidentally deleting something important. So I did a reset. And doing a reset doesn't fix the DPI settings back. After being an idiot for a few minutes, I learned it was because of the DPI settings. Changed them back and it fixed the issue. So I've just left it alone and went with Nova. I contribute some of that ignorance to alcohol.

Did it not make your lock screen wallpapers look all screwy though? It zooms in on the wallpaper and makes a dark shadow on the top part for me. I couldn't find a way around it when lowering the dpi.
Interesting... as I'm reading these, I'm thinking... some of the lettering is somewhat blurry, or has a weird look to it... is that just the IPS or the fact that no one has adapted to 2k reso?
