Welcome on the forum
First of all: please post questions in q&a section, not in general. This will keep the forums clean!
Then: You can try updating using PC Companion (that doesn't work according to what you said) or Sony Update Service, if both programs don't work, download the stock rom (it's a .ftf) for your xperia active (Android 4.0.4: 4.1.B.0.587) and use flashtool to flash it :good:

Okay you can download the 4.1.B.0.431 for your xperia active here
Then you flash the .ftf like explained in the guide here. After flashing, boot your phone and go through the setup. Then search for updates with the UpdateCenter app and update to .587!
Then you can use this program to root and you are done :good:

[Q] Xperia Mini 4.0.2.A.0.62 root ???

My Xperia mini has official 4.0.2.A.0.62 firmware and I want to root it
I searched for this in this site and I found this way :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346198
I like this way because it's easy and safe without any complicated steps like flashing
But it didn't work with this firmware
I want to root because the screen is too dark and I want to disable the light sensor of the device.
I'm new in this site and I want the easiest way to do this....
Anyone can help???
Thanks...
(Sorry for my bad english )
EDIT:
Finally my phone is rooted
I downgraded the firmware from wotanserver.com to 4.0.2.A.0.42
It's easy !
Then I rooted my phone by this way:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1346198
Now It's rooted
Special thanks to you guys
There is no way to root .62 for now.
Unless you unlock your bootloader.

First unlock the bootloader the SE way.
Then flash the rage kernel with flash tool and you are automatically rooted.
.
It worked for me with .62..
Try it.

[Q] HELP:How to Root Xperia NEO V 4.0.4

Hi There,

It´s just hoorrorbile for me to find the right tools + Instruction because I never ever do a Job like that on a Android System..

Hello,
I've searched for a direct root for Neo V (4.0.4) but it seems that it's not available for the moment.
Do you know if it will be available one day or if Sony has corrected the hack ?

You are asking if we know if someone will discover exploit one day? Are you aware that there is no answer to that question?
Sony corrected exploits from .62, but that didn't stop someone find new one(in 4.0.3)
I would just say this, don't expect someone will go and search for new exploit, since available root is pretty easy(2,3 minutes job), so no one will bother with search.
If someone will find it it will be accidentally

In fact, I was asking in the case someone was already working on it.
So if I understand well, the exploit that allows the root in 4.0.3 has been fixed in 4.0.4 ?
Because I imagine that is not necessary to find a new exploit for each update. That could take time to Sony to fix it and they probably prefer to put resources on other stuff.

The same method has an Unroot option. If you haven't made any too many modifications to the system , you can just UnRoot and flash OTA with PCC.
If you have made quite a few changes, or are on some Custom Rom, you could flash The ICS FTF , and upgrade from there. The Stock ICS thread is here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914264. It's official ICS, so you can update officially. This is recommended, but you will probably lose all settings and data.
