This is a question I've had for a long time. Whenever i use my GPS, my phone gets really hot and has a major battery drain (even with the new maps crap). Im running on cm10.1 but the s4 isnt the first phone that has had this problem for me. My DNA on stock and my fascinate on stock had the exact same issue. Can anyone explain what is going on and whether there is a fix for this?
bump
This is normal. Despite the s4 having great battery life, gps and tethering beat this battery to death. With Rapid power consumption, comes more heat. No way around it

Hello XDA community,
I have the MB860 Atrix 4G running Jokersax11's latest CM10 rom (which is amazing btw, thanks Joker!): beta 0.2.0 (from: http://www.jokersax.com/ ) and I am facing severe battery drain. I have tried different batteries with the same result so I think it is a software issue, probably an app. I have been unsuccessful in determining which app it is, however. I created a logcat (attached) hoping that some gracious person on xda could help me determine what could be my problem. I would post a screenshot of my battery stats but for some unknown reason the ability to take screenshots with the power button is no longer available. but phone idle is typically the largest battery consumer. so far today the battery has dropped 25% in 1.75 hours with little use. Yesterday it dropped 50% in 2.5 hours...not good!
Additional info: wifi is always on, gps/bluetooth is almost always off. Battery drain is essentially the same when wifi is turned off. I'm connected to an AT&T microcell. I use lots of widgets, however the problem is fairly (approx a week) recent and the widgets have been there for months. More info can be added as requested.
Thank you to anyone who takes any time to look at this or who can provide me with some advice!! I would really appreciate it.
Micro cell uses a 3g connection right? I'm asking because mobile data murders the battery very, very quickly on cm10. Wifi connection makes the phone last forever.

Thanks for responding. Yeah I believe it does use the 3G signal entirely. That might explain my issue because I am on the micro cell a large majority of the time. Although I thought I was seeing fast battery drain even when I was off of the micro cell. Perhaps that meant I was on normal 3G from ATT. Hopefully CM10 will continue to improve in that area. I'm having to charge my phone multiple times a day which sucks haha I wonder if the issue is that extreme for others using the ROM.

What exactly is bluesleep? My wife was getting terrible battery life on her X2, so I rooted it and installed DKZ's CM10 to try and get better battery life. I saw something about bluesleep in the OP, but am having a hard time understanding it. She uses bluetooth in the car, and from what I read, it seems like the bluetooth has some effect on this bluesleep. If she turns on bluetooth in the car, should she turn it off after she leaves the car? If for some reason there's a day that she doesn't need bluetooth, should she still turn it on and off after a reboot to enable this bluesleep? I've been trying to read up on this, but information is so scattered on the issue so it's really hard to understand it.
Hey there! The bluesleep fix basically a fix that allows your phone to go into deep sleep when using ICS ROMs. Deep sleep puts your cpu into a low power state when it's not in use, saving you battery life. You can read the description on the bluesleep fix here:
EDIT: I suppose I should note that the bluesleep fix is not currently working on CM10.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1864547
I would recommend against your wife turning her Bluetooth on and off while using CM10. The more you mess with it, the more likely you'll have problems with your phone audio. I leave it on all the time and have not seen a noticeable difference in battery usage (nor have I had audio problems since). That's only my experience, however, your mileage may vary.

Thanks for explaining. I really feel bad for her cause the X2 is a terrible phone, and battery makes it that much worse. I feel like it's my fault cause I steered her towards Android instead of iOS, unfortunately she picked the X2.
It seems like turning bluetooth on and off also causes calls to drop after 3 seconds or so (she was literally in tears from this bug and ended up throwing the phone). Eventually we figured out that leaving the bluetooth on without turning it off fixed that problem, but then she tried facebook and it would force close in a few seconds. The X2 seems to be a good phone to build up stress levels, lol. It appears that 2.3.4 stock is the best way to go when it comes to battery life. Custom roms just seem to have too many issues, not that I blame developers. Most stayed away from this phone for a good reason. The upside is that our contract is up in about three months. If you could recommend the least bug prone rom with decent battery life, I would really appreciate it.
Absolutely! From my experience, all of the ICS/JB ROMs have some more battery drain than the GB based ones. Keep in mind that when we run those, we're using OS's that haven't been fully fit to our phones.
If I had to make a recommendation in a ROM with decent battery life as well as stability, I'd go with Eclipse. It's not as flashy or as customizable as some of the others, but it's a great daily driver. You can find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198857
You'll need to be on 2.3.5 for this ROM.

Thank you for your help.
Since the JB update I have been trying to narrow down the culprit in battery drain that has cropped up. Going through better battery stats there was never a definitive clue as to the cause.
Tonight my phone has been off charge 3 hours and its drained 10% in battery sat on a shelf doing nothing, simply because WIFI was enabled.
One of the stand out features of this device was decent battery life up against comparable handsets, now that's been taken away from a shocking firmware update i'm considering jumping ship.
Has anyone else found any means of fixing this yet? Or just a case of waiting for Samsung?

Theres some threads talking about this.
I don´t feel that.I´ m on LJ5 build and sincethe LJ builds I´m very happy with battery drain, even sometimes I get 5 hours screen on with wifi on.
Maybe you update your phone from ICS and don´t wyped your data or made a fresh install. Try to do so and you should be happy again.
It's probably due to a dirty WiFi network that's smashing a bunch of multicast packets. Pretty much all the custom kernels available now have a patch to ignore multicast when screen off; otherwise you'll just have to wait for Samsung to realise they did something silly (read: never)

That makes sense. Always the same with Samsung, takes them an age to get a new software update out and when they finally do it always comes at a cost.
My battery drain is less after settings in advanced to always on and changing the location settings and turning off notifications in some apps and also in play store.
Also in maps automatically update your location might be a battery drain.
I've got a lot of battery drain with wifi on, too. Last night, my battery dropped from 29% to 0% (in 5-6 hours) with wifi on. I woke up to find that my battery had been depleted. UGH!
Must check what is draining your battery. I don t experience that... so far and from many android devices I ve the s3 is by far the battery frindly I have.
I i ve s2 and xperia neo dayly use and I'm happy. I use also some dirty wifi networks and don't have problems at all.

it's a known issue on latest JB rlses. Whats funny is that :
-The leaks did not have the wifi battery drain
- The wifi drains more Battery battery than 3G. I can have 3G on all the time the phone last up to 1d10hrs with 2hrs screen time
I'm on the leaked version. But on lj5 I didn't experience that so far.

Iv had my galaxy s3 for 5 months now and i dont know if its just the Jellybean update but the battery drain when having wifi on is really bad im lucky to get 1 days usage with the phone , i got my google nexus4 yesterday and iv used wifi and data for most of the day and im now in day 2 my battery is at 44% and both batteries are same 2100mah
think im gonna sell my GS3 as the google nexus4 is so much better with battery , but before i do i will reflash stock jellybean on GS3 without root and run them both side by side to compare results , but so far GS3 battery is real bad for drain if i install juice defender on Nexus4 im sure i would get between 2-3 days usage with moderate usage
i will run my tests on both phones side by side with and without juice defender and try to show
I have had the same issue. Though the battery drain is not drastic, it certainly is more compared to ics. If you require better battery life then go back to ics and flash Aosp/Aokp roms

Since I rooted my phone and installed P.A.C rom I've been having random battery drain during the day even when not using my phone. Often I check and see Android OS using a lot of battery.
My phone gets really hot sometimes as well, often when charging (when this happens the charging doesn't seem to be charging fast either). It gets to around 46-50 degrees c.
I've had good mobile service, and usually keep all the battery draining services (Wi-Fi etc) off. What could be causing this? I was really keen on rooting my phone and gaining all this functionality but now it just seems to be giving me problems.
checked pacman thread?
There's a similar Q posted right now, check it out.

Hello everyone,
for a month now my Samsung galaxy S2 has been randomly shutting itself off. It always happens with the same pattern:
The signal suddenly drops to non-exsitent, then nothing reacts and finally everything goes black.I can maximally use my phone for about 5min but it stays alive for the whole day if I don't touch it.
Also when I switch it on again after it shut itself off a lot of battery life is lost, e.g I have full battery -> it shuts itself off -> I only have 50%.
Do you have any ideas about what I could do?
I thought it might have been a problem with ICS and therefore updated to Jelly Bean but the problem persisted...
Thanks for your help!
Sounds like a power problem. Have you tried a new battery? Could be hardware as you have ruled out software.
I had a similar (not exactly the same) problem on a friends s2. It was on full stock, never been 'messed with'.
To fix that, I flashed NeatROM & a new modem. Now it gets a lot better signal, and doesn't freeze up. It may be a long shot but possibly worth a go.
First though, do what Andrew says :good:

I'm currently having very similar issues......I take the phone off charge at 100%, do a little web browsing or make a call / send a text......and then the phone freezes and becomes totally unresponsive....then finally shuts off.
I reboot the phone and the battery percentage shows anything from 2% to 50% remaining. It's NOT the software.....I've changed from stock to cm10 to cm10.1 and reflashed various nandroids without making a difference......
The ONLY thing that stops it happening is to swap out the stock battery for my spare (high capacity 2000mAh) battery....so for me, it's definitely battery related.....
I'm expecting a new one in the post any day now......

Doesn't sound like much fun Keith. Let us know how you go when it comes. It's sounding like a completely different problem to the one I fixed, although it had similar symptoms.

No....not much fun.....but I had this issue with my galaxy W too....so I'm kinda used to it....lol
With the W, I'd get to the stage where the phone would (just about) fully boot.....and then shut down....
Just had a look at the S2s battery and it seems to be swelling which is ANOTHER indication of a borked battery.......

Hope so for your sake! Replacing the battery is a heck of a lot easier than finding a magic fix for a SOD which seems to randomly occur.
A couple weeks back or so there was a guy who's battery connection was sketchy between the battery and contacts, is your connection ok?

Morning Keith. If you swapped out std batt for big boy battery and problem was sorted its gonna be the battery. @ op glad you sorted it
OP here. Swapping the battery did it for me!
(I didn't even notice that my old battery was swollen )
Thanks a lot!
