[Q] is Nokia Lumia 920 Display Outlines light leakage Normal? - Nokia Lumia 920

Hiiii,
Bought 920 a day ago,
i found that Display sides have very very very slightly light leak, it seems like glue Not attached Properly,
i replaced my phone, then again same issue, so, my question is, is that normal? its very slightly, it not high leakage, not looks like led lights,
just very very slighl leakage out lines of display,
is that normal?

Look at you monitor, your TV, your games if any like a PSP and such. They all have light leak somewhere around the LCD. This is normal in the LCD world. It is just at some point with this phone somebody though it was wrong and started complaining about it due to it's high cost and their buyer remorse. Now many think light leakage around an LCD is wrong and a fault worthy of product return. It's normal.

Screen light leakage from leds

So I have my rezound now and so far setting it up and putting through it's paces and only one thing has me a little miffed and that the leds that light up the capacitive buttons below the screen are leaking up when you change the viewing angle slightly.
It's something I can live with but if I have a dud I'd like a replacement. My incredible s didn't have this issue.
Thanks

Mine does the same thing(so did the one on display at my local Verizon).
It's a bit extreme, but if you open it up, separate the screen from the digitizer, you could put a thin strip of electrical tape in there and that should block out most of it.
I'm not going to go to that extreme but pretty lame that they couldn't fix that.
I wonder if all of these major issues came from the same batch of phones. Mine hasn't had any of the problems, no audio issue, no bootloop, no heat, no light leaking, no dead pixels. When my buddy gets his today I am going to see if he has any issues.
Are you taking about seeing light when you look down on the phone from the top?
To illustrate what I mean..
Lay your phone flat on its back, then stand it so that it the screen is perpendicular to the surface. Now look down on the phone as if you were trying to look into the headphone jack , but direct your eyes to the led soft lights . You should be able to see light.
Make sure the LEDs are on of course.
I'd this is what you mean.. I don't see it as a problem. More like nit picking. We don't use the phone at that viewing angle for anything

I've owned 2 HTC phones in the past and they both have had light leakage.
I'm learning that some things on phones we just have to accept, because really they aren't that big of a deal
Light leakage on HTC phones is one of them, the other being issues with sAmoled screens such as tint problems. I guess some things are just manufacturing artifacts. Sure they can completely get rid of light leakage, but whatever you won't notice it in a couple weeks anyway. It isn't a defect, just something common with HTC phones.

[Q] Are these light spots to be expected?

As you can see on the screenshot attached, I get a pair of light spots [1] in the upper right corner of my screen of my newly acquired TFP.
I get these at boot or whenever this part of the screen is dark, eg when looking at a movie.
Has any of you the same “problem”? Is this to be expected? Or should I contact the tech support? [2]
Thanks in advance for your help!
[1] One blueish on top of one redish.
[2] But I don't trust Asus tech support as they already gave me blatanly innacurate infos, as explained here (see “Part 3”).
That's light bleed, and it's caused by the display being improperly mounted (some screws inside are not fastened properly). It's a common problem with the Transformer. It can be ok (I can live with mine, it's barely perceivable), or worse. Yours seems to be in the second category. I'd exchange if it's still possible. I had pretty severe light bleed on my first one as well (plus a stuck green pixel in the middle of the screen), and exchanged it.
I've got similar lightbleed on my lower left corner of the screen during boot up. It's similar to the size of your top 'bluish' bleed. No other bleed. Otherwise not affecting daily use. H
OK, that is not normal. You need to open it up or exchange it.
So… Asus told me to go to the shop with my TFP and exchange it. But the new one was even worse. I went back to the shop once again and ordered a third TFP. I got it yesterday.
It's the best TFP I got in my hand, I still have one clear spot of light bleed (landscape upper left corner) and a small fringe almost all around the screen. {weeping}
For the price this toy cost, I expected no light bleed but I don't know if I should try a fourth time, could get a worse screen.
don't stop until you're satisfied! let asus know the level of quality we demand!

I just played with a new 2012 iPad at Bestbuy. I set it to display a black image and it also had noticeable lightbleed. Nowhere near as bad as the photo in that first post, but still noticeable on a black screen if you look for it.
I think that most devices that make use of LCDs have some level of light bleed. Looking at my Dell laptop, my HP laptop, my Samsung and LG LCD tvs and my OG EVO 4G each device had visible lightbleed on black screens.
The only device I own that doesn't have light bleed is my Galaxy S2 (hooray for OLED )
As long as you don't see the light bleed when it use, I think it is something you have to learn to ignore. If the lightbleed is severe enough that you cannot ignore it, exchange it for another device.
FWIW I have very slight lightbleed in my top right corner. But I only ever notice it on the boot screen

We could think so, yes. But, as far as technology is concerned, it should be easier to avoid light bleed (good sealing) than to obtain a good contrast (molecular properties) with LCD. Contrast ratio grows higher and higher and, on the other heand and afaik, it's my first light bleed ever! I never ever witnessed it on the laptops, netbooks and high-end lcd screens I worked with. Tablets are “toys” but TFP (and iPad) are definitely high-end toys. Hence my dissatisfaction.

The lightbleed in your photo is very severe, and I wouldn't be satisfied with it. However lightbleed does exists on most LCD screens. I never noticed it on other devices until it was pointed out to me on my OG EVO 4G and now I see it everywhere.
Like I said, if the level of lightbleed that your device displays is too difficult to ignore, exchange it for a new one or for a different device. However the chances of you finding a device or any make or brand, that is 100% light-bleed free is very slim. This will be especially true since now you will be looking for it

Weird spots underneath the screen?

Some time ago I noticed that, in some very special situations, like under direct and strong artificial/sun light and a particular angle, I'm able to see a couple of small, very faint spots, kinda similar to those left by dried moisture (like a drop of water) underneath the screen. At first I though it was my bad for putting on a wet screen protector, but just the other day I had a look at the device of a friend of mine (no protector wahtsoever), and looking closely I found similar spots, just not two but a single and bigger one. This got me a bit puzzled, so I decided to take a look at a third device, this time a demo unit in a shop, and guess what? Also that one had a similar mark right in the middle of the screen.
Now, not that this bothers me much, since you can't actually see it unless you really try (I can't even catch it with a camera), but I'd love to know from you guys if this is a common "flaw" or I just happened to grab a "flawed" handful of devices...
Yup, I have these dark patches. You can see them sometimes if you look at a particular angle when the phone is booting up. I can't see them any other time though
I can see dark patches when the screen is dimmed, especially at night, I can't see it any other times, Nokia returned it to me because they couldn't see it. So they asked to send it in again, it took them ten days to just flash a ROM....I was pissed as it is.
When the Display is off I can sometimes see some "blacker" areas on the screen. According to Nokia These are splices where the glass is somehow glued to the display.
Thank you guys, at least I feel a little better about it now...anyway it still puzzles me how this is the first device I own in years with this kind of issue, and I really had many, both resistive and capacitive, with or without gorilla and even made of plastic. I mean this isn't really a flaw, but knowing it's there annoys me. Damn, maybe I should really just stop being so OCD with my devices, it hurts

I still would class it as a fault, it makes my eyes burn.
Are you speaking about the spots which are visible in the dark if the screen is black?
I saw them when I did my screen black in diagnostics app - lcd test.
So I took a picture of "black" screen with long exposure (iso 400, 30 seconds exposure) and show it in nokia care service. Week after I got new display

Actually those aren't really "spots", it's some sort of light leak that all amoled devices have when displaying plain black: even if all the leds are supposed to be off there's still some electricity going through them. I had that on all of my amoled devices, on my Desire, on my SGS2 and on my Omnia W as well, it doesn't look that great but it's fine I guess. Weird that you still managed to get the screen replaced, maybe your unit actually had some excessive light leak.
Here I'm talking about a different thing, given that you have them you should be able to see those spots I described even with the device completely off if you keep it under a strong light and at the right angle.

Can't reproduce that. I look closely but see nothing special.
Though, as Russian proverb says - the less you know the stronger you sleep
Here is a picture of screen with the spots I was posting about.
So, if anyone have scratched screen as I had, it is a good reason to get repair
PS note that picture was taken with long exposure. Actually my eyes need to get used to darkness to see glow.

Yeah that's it, the good old light leak
Anyway the picture you took being overexposed gives the impression of a huge issue, so I guess they replaced the screen right after looking at that, even tho in normal darkness conditions it's definitely not so annoying. Good for you that you managed to get it replaced anyway
lol a 30 second exposure will bring out the worst of the display. I can understand they replaced it after showing that image that sort of tricks them because it will never be even close to that visible to the naked eye.
Completely normal for AMOLED displays.

Screen issues on the Lumia 800

Hi everyone.
The purple tint problem on the Lumia 900 is of common knowledge and Nokia as already issue a statement confirming an incoming software fix, however, just having bought a Lumia 800 I'm a bit concerned.
My device features a slightly tinted gradient from the left (darker) to the right (lighter) of the screen. This is easily identifiable while using the keyboard, where the greys get a purple hue on the left side, or if you open a new empty tab on internet explorer for instance, where you'll notice the lack of uniformity across the display. It should be all white but it's a pale purplish shade on the left edge and gets whiter as we move to the opposite side.
This is highly visible on the Low brightness setting or if you have it set to auto on a dark room.
As of now, there seems to be no word regarding a fix for the L800. Have any of you guys noticed this problem on your phones?
I would appreciate any feedback on this subject in order to decide what to do. The phone is very recent, so i'm still able to return or exchange it but I'm really liking the Lumia and WP7.5 and would pretty much like to stick with it as long as i can get a fix or a replacement that doesn't have this problems.
Thanks.

I have noticed this behaviour several weeks ago, too.
This is normal with amoled screens and nothing to fix with firmware. It's not really the same problem as the purple thing with the 900 since that was extreme and was some software bug somehow and only affected low brightness.
Most amoled screens do get this purple tint. Some more than others and it's only visible on white/gray backgrounds.
I replaced a Lumia 800 because it was very noticable when opening the keyboard (gradient across the whole screen) and it bothered me very much. It slapped me in the face every time I opened the keyboard. The 800 I have now hardly has it at all. I say hardly because no amoled is 100% uniform across the whole screen.
If it bothers you too much. Replace it. It won't/can't be fixed with firmware. It's not the same issue as with the 900.
Thanks for the feedback.
I've returned my first Lumia and got a new.
Even though this new unit doesn't have the same level of tint, the purplish gradient is still there and very noticeable with low brightness.
I must say i'm very surprised with what you said dannejanne. I never came across such an issue on other AMOLED screens like the ones on the Samsungs. I must admit that the Nokia screen goes way beyond the lower level of brightness of the Galaxy's but still, can find an hint that is related to the technology of the display, especially considering the price range of the Lumia 800.
In any case, thanks once more for sharing you experiences.
Well. Personally I have never seen a Amoled screen that is 100% uniform when viewing gray backgrounds. That includes Samsung phones as well.

Not sure though if it's related to pentile or not.

Yellow tint due to (pebble blue) cover coating?

A few days ago me and my girlfriend both bought a Pebble Blue S3. Unfortunately mine has a yellow tint to the screen, as a lot of other users seem to have too looking at the various threads about this issue. This is clearly visible when displaying white, but also the greys are affected. The whites appear to be more yellow when brightness is at its lowest. The whites are less yellow at maximum brightness. In direct comparison to the S3 of my girlfriend all this is easily noticible. In addition, in direct comparison between both phones the front cover of my S3 looks darker than hers. So I was wondering: could it be that this yellow tint which is noticible and which is already reported by lots of people, is due to some kind of coating of the front cover? So in fact it isn't due the AMOLED screen itself, but due to the tint of the cover, which thus functions like some kind of filter?
I hope I have some time this week to return to the shop, and see if I can exchange my phone for another one...

Can you check the batch/date/country of your phone and let us know? It might be the new batch and can be the glass glue which is still not fully dried. I remember my iphone 4 32gb had this issue and i waited a week or 2 and it disappeared. Due to high demand the phones are shipped out much quicker and may take sometime for things like these to dry out.

Yep, if you tell me where I can find this information?
Yesterday evening I've been to another shop, and I've seen two other Pebble Blue devices. Both the front covers were lighter blue than mine SGS3, and the screens were more white as well...
It's on the back after you remove the battery. Also there is date/country on battery.

Same here and also Pebble Blue model...and it sucks! It literally ruins my day when you realize you shed 660 euro for...this crap of a display! Already installed Screed Adjuster from the Market (hate the new "Play store" name!!) but it's of little consolation. I think Samsung SCREWED UP big time this time and i'm toying with an idea of changing the model and, for that matter, getting out of Samsung followers as i've bee all these years. It's a shame 'cause I've been on all Galaxies ever and now they let me down.

I went back to the store and showed the problem. They agreed on me, and said it looked like someone threw coffee over it. They gave me a new phone without further discussion. The new one has a nice white screen.
Unfortunately this one has another issue; when I push the capacitive back button (and the phone is in silent/vibrating mode) I can hear a noise/static hiss coming from the speaker, which dissappears after 4 - 5 seconds...
However, the screen is way better, and looks rather nice. I suggest you go back as well and ask for a replacement.
