I'm going to be doing some international travel for work, so I was ecstatic when the Photon became available with international capabilities. I would be able to carry a single phone, my tablet, and laptop. I was wondering if you guys think it would a be a good idea to keep track of which countries and carriers people have had success using the Motorola Photon? For example, if a user has had success with using the Photon in Cairo, Egypt, then they would post their success as follows:
City, Country, Continent: Cairo, Egypt, Africa
Carrier: Vodafone
Carrier Plan: ???
Voice working: Yes
Data working: Yes
Sim Card Type: ???
Sim Card Memory Size: ???
Hopefully this could become a success and gets stickied. I can really see this helping out others with compatibility questions regarding the photon and international use.

Unfortunately, I dont have anything to contribute at the moment.

I called Customer Service who told me that the phone is already unlocked and that it supports most GSM bands. All you have to do is pop in the sim and switch from cdma to gsm in settings. I'll be in London, Paris and Amsterdam in 2 weeks so I'll be able to update you.
This is a fantastic idea, and I'm really interested in hearing about Japan and South America. It'll be a year before I go back to Japan, but eventually...
One of the main reasons I got this phone over the Evo 3D is the GSM/Global abilities.
After two fruitless weeks of trying, I am sorry to report that the Sprint Photon does not work for data with a Vodafone Australia SIM. See
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205357for more details.
Voice worked fine, however.
T-Mobile UK SIM on T-Mobile UK network - Data OK, Voice OK.
T-Mobile UK SIM roaming on Orange UK network - Data OK, Voice OK
However, No Voicemail Notification.

Levman, you're not alone it seems: https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/320514
Seems like there is some weird issue with Vodaphone AUS and these motorola phones...

For Tmobile UK:
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
Username: user
Password: pass
I am in China using China Mobile and everything works minus MMS. Keep getting data disabled messages and sometimes no interner connection when I am connected to the internet.

I just entered the APN Name, APN address and Username in the Photon which I copied from my old phone. The network pushed all the other settings, or they were the Photon defaults. Do a Google search: "APN Settings" and you'll see the important fields to enter for your card. User IDs and PWs aren't consistent. I've seen "wap" and "web" for Vodafone UK, for example. In the case of T-Mobile, the network corrected my User ID and added a password where there wasn't one before.

Yes, I've seen threads on several forums related to Vodafone/android/APN problems. Sprint tech support has asked me for additional technical details, and they tell me they are continuing to research this ... if they come up with a resolution I will post it here, but I am back in the US now so I don't think I'll be able to test it unless the Vodafone PAYGO plan I purchased works internationally.
I'll be testing this in Guam in about 2 weeks.
Vodafone UK SIM on Vodafone UK network. Voice OK and Data OK.
Didn't try the Voicemail notification.
Again, just entered the carrier's APN name and address, and the UID. Be aware that only the APN for the SIM you have in the Photon shows in the settings. For example, with a Vodafone SIM in the phone, the T-Mobile APN setting you made when that SIM was in the phone goes away until you put the T-Mobile SIM back in. Then it re-appears and the Vodafone one goes away.
Please can we get reports on Voicemail notification on different networks as time goes by. Thanks.

I just went to the T-mobile store to check on the Data situation. The rep tried two sim cards, a brand new one and the one from his co-worker's phone. He was unable to get data to work on either of these. I will be be signing a contract tomorrow and will be able to mess with the settings and give further information this weekend. On a more positive note, he was impressed with my phone and had never seen anything like it. Motorola seems to have little presence here.
Hello
I have a problem with my phone.
Model number: GT-I9100
Androiud version: 4.0.4
Baseband version:I9100XXKG6
Cyanogenmod version: 9-20120523
I've bought a WIND sim card and it works fine with a nokia phone, but somehow it doesn't work with my SGS2 at all.
I mostly don't get any signal with it , just once in a while a full signal but I just can choose Roger and Mobilicity as network. There is no WIND network and I can't do any phone calls or something.
I don't know what to do because it just works fine with the Nokia phone.
I changed the Custom Rom to WIUI and stock rom but no change.
Probably because that phone doesn't have aws frequencies it only works on bell rogers telus virgin
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
when I used WIUI it shows not Rogers and Mobilicity anymore but only WIND HOME and WIND AWAY, but I can't be registered on both.
It will be impossible to connect to Wind Home. Wind uses the 1700 UMTS frequency (same as T-Mobile USA) and the i9100 supports UMTS 850/1900/2100. The only SGS2 that supports the AWS frequency is Telus' SGS2X.
You now have three options if you want to use your phone:
1) Buy a new phone that's AWS compatible
2) Connect to Wind Away and enjoy roaming charges for everything
3) Switch to another Carrier that's not based on AWS
I'm sure I've got a sms from WIND after togging up saying I'm good to go.
And even when I use the Roger Network, I can't do any calls or anything.
Why is that so?
The answer above hasn't changed. Just because you can see the networks doesn't mean your phone supports the frequency required to make calls. Sim card doesn't matter either because its the network that's the problem.
Hi all, won an eBay auction for a used 920 (uk) which is claimed to be unlocked.
Put my Vodafone sim in it, very very poor signal strength (when I get any at all) and won't make or receive calls (I get full bars on Vodafone in my location).
Put a GiffGaff sim in, exactly the same issue.
Tried manually choosing Vodafone (pre-pay) from the settings but makes no difference.
It doesn't tell me it's locked to a network, it just doesn't work.
Is this the behaviour of an EE phone and is there any way to tell if it is on EE (firmware, etc?);
Carrier: CV GB SW Variant ID 276 v03
Have been through the Nokia support chat and am about to send it back to Nokia for repair just wanted to make sure it's not an EE phone before it goes back. Nokia say according to their tool it is not locked to EE...
I bought this yellow Lumia 920 form USA. I live in Europe.
Unfortunately it was locked, I called AT&T and they gave me an unlock code and now it's unlocked.
I put 2 different SIMS inside but the phone shows no signal at all. It reads the SIM from inside ( services etc) but It will not lock to a signal.
When I boot it it shows an airplane mode and in 2 seconds the no signal icon. The airplane mode is disabled thought I checked enabling and disabling.
I decided to flash it to Rogers after reading all these comments here using Nokia Care Suite. It was succesful. The conversion was from RM-820 AT&T to ----> RM820 Rogers Canada.
I had the ability now to change from LTE to 3G and 2G but to no avail. The signal remained dead and it wouldn't find any signal after searching for new networks associated with my 2 sim cards that I tried.
If I flash it again to the rm-821 euro dev rom will it work ? The thing is that I can't find it nowhere to download it. Where did you guys found it from ?
Thanks
What frequencies does your provider support? My bet is that your provider does not support this phone. You can flash all you want, that does not change it's operating frequencies and there is no way to change them. They are part of the hardware. So check your frequencies.
Here they are, if your provider does not use any of these then you wasted your money and time.
Frequency: GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900MHz; UMTS: 850/900/1900/2100MHz; LTE**: Bands 4 and 17
