Hi. I accidently dropped my Galaxy s2 in water. But I immediately put it in rice and a day later the phone is perfect. I tested features sound, charging everything works. However, the problem is when I connect the device to my computer using a USB it charges the phone, however the computer doesn't recognize it. It says "USB not recognized" How could this be if my phone is being charged? How can I fix it?

I suggest you dry it some more and see if the issue gets resolved. If not, check your USB port to see if it needs cleaning (use a fine brush gently to remove dirt or other accumulations). If nothing else works, you may have to change the USB flex cable.
A day in rice isn't long enough. You need to shut the phone down & remove the battery immediately after being exposed to water (if it didn't auto shutdown) & put it in rice for a week. You've most likely caused permanent damage by using the phone a day after exposure.
If you're lucky a USB board/port change as Neo suggested may fix it, but don't be surprised if it doesn't (I still don't fathom how people drop phones in water).

Too bad that last thursday I used the charger from a kit similar to this (link found in the forum 3 months ago).
(h**p://w*w.befr.ebay.be/itm/Dock-Sync-Cradle-USB-Charger-For-Samsung-I9100-Galaxy-S2-II-Plug-/260876977248?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3cbd7ac460), directly (without the cradle)
It was the first time I use the power adapter directly to recharge my phone.
And since thursday my phone detects unexpectedly usb connection (and says I ave to close all aplications to use with Kies etc...).
I suppose it is no coincidence and that this fu***** charger damaged a capacitor or another electronic component of this kind inside my phone!?
What do you think ?
What can I do? Send it using warranty? Disable USB detection (how?)?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
Edit: Now the phone is not recognized when I connect it to computer (usb) or it starts the car mode!!!
A lot of people have this. Try brushing the usb connector on the bottom of your phone using a CLEAN and DRY toothbrush.
I had this problem, this fixed it for me ever since. Also bending the connector a TINY bit to the middle of the hole may help. But watch out, as it's horribly thin.
Two connectors are bent because of your new charger, or dust is causing the problem.
Thanks for this first answer! But...
Three others things (I've cleaned the connector as you said to):
The screen lights up by itself, too! And 9 times out of 5 when I press the power button (in order to lock and switch off screen) the phone just freeze and the only way to get it back again is to remove/replace battery!
By the way the battery drains faster than usual!
Do you still think it's only a matter of dust/connector (just asking but strange coincidence...)!?
Hello I have exactly the same problem since 2 days first it started thinking its connected to the USB, second thing is it wakes up soon after you have put it down and if you press the power button it freezes I have tried it more than 50 times and it freezes every time (when its connected to the charger only froze once) and today when i try to connect it to the USB nothing happens.I have tried Hard Reset , restore to a stable setup with CWM but it wont help. This happened when I got home after I was 2 hours outside working and it was very cold and moist but I only had the phone outside my pocket for 1 - 2 minutes to make a call and some very tiny drops got on the screen.I regret taking it with me if I only knew that was going to happen. One other thing I had an App to track the battery state and now when the phone thinks its connected yo USB but its not the program says my battery is over voltaged. What happened with your phone . Can someone help
Hi everybody!
I am experiencing a new kind of problem in my sgs2,
Last saturday a glass of water droped on the floor and some water wet my phone. It was on, and it didn´t switched off. I did it by myself and took off the batery.
But when I switched it on again a yellow triangle with a thermomether appeared in the screen. The sgs2 seemed to work right, but it began with some problems. First of all, I couldn´t switch it off, once I did, the phone rebooted itself. Then it appeared at the top the sign of "mtp initializing" even when the usb wasn´t connected. I took the batery apart and tried to see if there was water inside. I blew and some water went out of the phone.
I remark that the only part that got wet was the usb (even inside) but the water didn´t touched the screen and nothing else.
After a couple of days, the phone didn´t recognize the usb cable when it is connected. And when I charged the sgs2, it was ok at the begining.
But, yesterday, the phone stopped detecting the charger when it is connected. Even more, to charge the cell, I have to switch it off and connect the charger, doing this, the telephone reboot and begin charging.
Nowadays, the only way to charge the phone is what I´ve related. Furthermore, it didn´t detect the usb when it is connected.
Ah!, just the week before this accident, the sgs2 reboot itself many times and vlingo activated itself. In spite of the fact that the battery was full, in some reboots, after rebooting, it showed me %10 of battery. Then when it rebooted again it showed me the correct percentage.
Considering I´ve no warranty, I opened the phone and checked if the "usb block" got wet and at first sight it was perfect!
Except for this issues, the phone works great. Even more, I flashed it by CWM (just in case it was the rom) and nothing got fixed.
I ordered a new brand "usb block", and I am waiting for it to arrive.
Does anybody know anything useful?
Thanks a lot! This is a great community, and if you don´t know nobody will.
Hello, same problem here. But without any water!!! I will try today to clean up the usb connector without battery in the phone. And I will see.
If you can try it also...
I was having the same issue. And I am not sure this will help, but I read on net that at times with Galaxy S people faced this issue and was related to files with very large file name. So I checked my download folder and indeed I had a wiered file with eBay something. And surprisingly, after I deleted that file, things are again back to normal for me.
Thanks,
Vishal
after few weeks I know that it works!! you have to clean up your connector from a dust
I can't seem to find anyone which has exactly the same problem as this although a few similar posts.
I think my USB connection may have got a bit moist in the snow lately. I got a message saying unable to charge by USB when it wasn't even plugged in. Plugged it in PC overnight to charge and when I unplugged it the charging symbol stayed on.
I can't boot the phone up as it constantly loops on charging/not charging and can't boot into recovery. I can boot into download mode but nothing shows as connected in Windows despite reinstalling drivers several times and trying another PC.
It did start up once yesterday but having powered it up again since after leaving it to dry out it seems it was a one off. I've ordered a replacement charging port module which I'll try once it arrives but wondered if anyone has any advice in the meantime?
Some threads have mentioned not being able to turn the phone off but I can't even turn mine on! Although I guess I can't turn it off either since it is constantly restarting the battery icon when the battery is in. I've tried plugging it into the wall and PC, it does charge to 100% but still can't turn it on.
does sound like it is water damaged, it also sounds more likely that its not going to be just the charging port
try using JIG and removing the battery... it may help

Well once I managed to boot into it yesterday it worked perfectly, so pretty sure everything else is working fine it just has a problem constantly charging and disconnecting which is stopping it booting properly.

Thanks. Will try tomorrow with the JIG and new board when they turn up. The thought of having a £300 paper weight sickens me!
Fixed it temporarily at least.
Unscrewed the 7 screws behind the battery cover. Disconnected the usb/charging board from the mainboard. Turned it on and it started up then plugged the usb/charging board back in and restarted. All works great now except it still thinks its charging and not charging repeatedly so won't go into a deep sleep but that'll be fixed once the new board arrives.
I am having this exact same issue. My damned ski pant pocket decided to open up a bit and let some powder in. Not much snow got in, but enough to cause some issues apparently. I cleaned the USB port with rubbing alcohol and same with the contacts for the battery. It seems to have stopped, but every once and a while it will try to go into car mode. Kind of frustrating.
Yeah, it still thinks it is charging after I unplug it, and sometimes it will not recognize that I am charging when I do plug it in. Any ideas?
I have the same problem... Started with going into car mode... then telling me that the usb is plugged in when it isn't. Now says it's charging all the time and when I reboot that the battery is overheating... Can't restart unless I go into cwm and reboot. I've got a new usb port/board on order and hope that fixes it.

Can you point me in the direction of one of those? I think I may need to pick one up.
I just plugged my phone into my computer to charge it, and my computer failed to recognize it. I think the issue must lie with the usb port on my phone, as there is absolutely nothing else wrong with it other than the charging issues.
I found the usb port/board on ebay... Search for usb flex cable or charging port. Think it was less than 20 bucks, just hope it fixes the problem.

Thanks, me too. Just ordered one. I picked up a new battery too, because mine was having issues.
The new usb board fixed my phone...yay!

Sweet, did you happen to check the revision number on it? I bet it was fairly easy to install as well?
Didn't check the revision number...
Wasn't that hard to replace. The board and flex cable is glued to the housing so I had to carefully lift it off after unscrewing the two screws. There was another screw on the motherboard that I had to take out... and then lift it up a bit to get the cable Unglued and out.

Yeah, that is what the video I found seemed to indicate. Ha, I work on laptops and desktops on a daily basis, but I still get nervous about small work like that.
Update: I just installed it, and it fixed my issues regarding charging! The battery is still being retarded, but I have another than is on the way.
Hey all,
After being fine for almost 12 months, my phone has suddenly developed a bug. Nothing has changed over the last 24hrs, so I am not sure where it has come from.
It started with a notification saying 'activating USB will turn bluetooth off. Continue?'
There was nothing plugged in to the USB at the time, so I'm not sure why it came up.
I clicked 'NO' but it kept happening constantly until I reset the phone. Then when I turned the phone back on, the battery overheat sign came up. It clearly wasn't running hot, but it only went away after I removed the battery.
Then this morning after I unplugged my phone from the charger it said it was still on charge and the 'battery full' notification wouldn't go away. So I reset my phone, and again the overheat sign comes on. Take battery out.....etc.
Now it is telling me that it is on charge (it isn't) and that USB device notification.
Phone is running 2.3.6. Any ideas?
Possible USB port malfunction. Maybe try cleaning it.

Second that.Clean the port with a cotton bud and cleaning alcohol.
Is Metho ok to use?
I might look up how to take the phone apart and give the insides a proper clean, rather than just poking around the port.
I'll await an answer about the metho before I give it a crack.
Thanks for the replies.
You dont have to take the phone apart
Quite a few people have had problems with dirt in the USB port its caused problems similar to and exactly like yours. All they have done is gone to the chemist,or pharmasy or however its spelt and for a few bucks you can buy cleaning alcohol. It must be this kind because of its high alcohol level it drys quickly and doesnt leave moisture inside when done.A few gentle wipes and thats all it needs.Dont take the phone apart cos the port is closed and it will be of no use.Meth is heavy and will leave alot behind drowning the port again.
Hi. I was just browsing on my rooted galaxy s2. Suddenly the whole screen froze. It would not do anything, so i decided to take the battery out. When i put it back in, it turned on and was stuck on the "samsung galaxy s2 i9100" screen. So i decided to take the battery out and try again. This time it wouldnt turn on or charge. When i plug it in, it just gets hot, but there is no sign of life. I tried holding the power button and entering recovery and download mode. But its not recognised. I dont think its the battery because when i plugged it into a pc without the battery, it still wasnt recognised.
Before this happened, i was running the solo launcher and i was using a kindle paper charger for it.(first time i used this).
Please help me find a way to fix it without jtag. Usb jig won't work, its totally not functioning to anything except getting hot when plugged in.
Signs of life:
Gets hot when plugged in.
sadly bro,but it sounds like a motherboard is dead
if you have access to usb jig - atleast try it
if no joy - motherboard replacement

oh ok thanks, i am not under warranty, so could i just send it to a local repair store, or do i need to send it to samsung. If so, how much would it cost?
sent it to your local repair shop - it will be less expensive than samsung's service
you can also buy the mobo at ebay etc,and pay only for the procedure
idk about the price, mail the repair shop about that.
USB ports
When my phone was newer I had a lot of usb port trouble, overheating, failing to charge properly, even apparent bricking. I heard there was an issue with this port. I narrowed it down by sticking a small object into the USB port and levering the pin slot back up to the middle (preventing the short).
That fixed it for a while. Also fluff can create a short, so blowing it out can fix it.
It finally failed again, so I bought a $5 piece from ebay, watched a youtube video and fixed it properly.
So, try firstly blowing out the usb port, then using a toothpick to push it around a little. If that fixes your phone then all good
Yeah, that'll fix it
