Not your run of the mill comparison Video - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi all,
Decided to compare the Sony Xperia Z UItra to a little bit of a different device, the Samsung Galaxy S.
This was really the first device that made me fall in love with Android and I've never looked back since.
Let me know what you think

I remember when the Galaxy S was huge. Not so anymore Very nice video btw

Tablet S or Galaxy Tab 10.1?

I'm on the fence about either a Galaxy Tab 10.1 or a Tablet S.. right now they are priced about the same but the local store is doing a free set of Sony earbuds and case with the Tablet S.
Would love to hear opinions as to which is the best option. I like the unique look of the Tablet S so far.
I had the Samsung and sold it to buy the Sony. The Sony is much more comfortable to use and its design is fantastic. It also benefits from a full size SD card slot and in my opinion a better screen. You also have the latest OS update on the Sony at Android 3.2.
They are both excellent devices but I just feel the Sony edges it with the comfort factor which is especially good in portrait.
Bought the 10.1 about 4-5 days before the Sony came out, I traded it in on a whim and I'm glad I did. I love my Sony more than I did my 10.1, the size of the Sony feels more right, even in bigger hands.
I sold my rooted Xoom & chose the Tablet S also, it's suppose to be delivered tomorrow or Thurs. The only negative is that the Tablet S hasn't been rooted yet. I plan on testing it out, & if I REALLY miss root, I may sell it & get the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
You are in a Sony forum, so consider that while weighing the answers given.
I have both, and what has aggravated me about the Samsung 10.1 is that they insisted on copying the iPad (good and bad features) as close as possible. No memory expansion. A propietary dock port. Etc.. The Sony S is original, thoughtful, has IR emitter, and an ergonomic shape. I prefer the S for those reasons.
Yeah honestly despite the appearance that Sony just made it look weird for the sake of being unique I cant praise the shape of the tablet enough. It is imo a feature worth being a deciding factor, the tablet just feels so "right" in your hand. The Galaxy is a fine tablet having used it quite a bit but no way would I trade my S Tab for it.
I was at the library today using a corded Laser mouse connected to my S. Love the hardcore computer aspect of it! host port makes it a complete computing device...
Start the same thread in SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB 10.1 Section !!!
You will see the difference in opinion...IMO, Sony S is better than Samsung Tab in looks(unique), PS games, better UI, SD Slot !!!
What I don't like is the Sound Output..

Can't wait for it to get rooted either, just to get rid of the customised icons if nothing else!
On topic, the IR remote and Play Station certification swung it for me.

[OPINION] Xperia Users who are considering Samsung Galaxy S3

Hi Guys,
I have used Xperia X10, Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia S and I am finding it really difficult to think about another brand !!!
I just want to know the opinion of Xperia users (Xperia S/Arc S), do you guys thinking about moving to Samsung Galaxy S3?
Actually I have used Xperia S for a short time & returned the set due to:
1. Built Issues - lower part (below the transparent strip) was very loose, the phone looks very fragile, once dropped, its gonne (i hate using cases)
2. No Physical Button - I really missed the physical button (I know its personal choice), galaxy S3 has one single button.
3. Still lagging - the phone still lags, Xperia promoted this too much but I can still lag while switching screens.
4. Camera is not so good - I find my 8MP cam of Xperia Arc far better than XS.
5. Everybody hates the flip covers - common problem.
Regarding Galaxy S3 - I know its not beautiful design but it has got power, I have Galaxy Note and I know its a beast.
Note: I just need opinions so no arguments or word wars please
i never thought of samsung, moreover iproducts are costly.
And main thing is i don't have any problem with my xperia s currently and i am happy with it.
Not the galaxy s3. If the problems I have with the xs are not solved I would consider the one x.
Wouldn't think of it.
My reasons in a nutshell:
Too ugly (blah design), bad screen (pentile so not true HD), not much of an upgrade (more cores isnt always better).
by the way, there was already an opinion thread on the S3 made, and it got closed because it went a bit....south I guess.
you can see more opinions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1637191
and I hope this thread won't turn out like the last one, but yea...
I want powerful phone this time, dont want to buy n to make my phone wrking better by rooting !!!
It should run smooth...
I am waiting for SG3 & XGX.
I really liked the smoothness of HTC One X !!!
Good option.
from xperia PLAY
Well if you want power above all, the One X or the SGS3 wouldn't be a bad option.
I don't know if it's still a problem though, but the One X was a battery vampire I hear.
I myself have thought about a Razr (not easily available here) or HTC phone (One S) before moving over to the S. I don't really like sense though, but the design of HTC devices never hit the spot, so picked the S in the end.
I don't know how you will be lag-wise, as android itself has a sort of lag by design. You may have returned your device within 15min I read, but you didn't really give it enough time to win your heart. It is a powerful device without even needing to do anything to it.
But yes, for benchmarks above all, those two devices would be the best option currently. Or you can wait for the Mint to release and not have a brand dilemma at all . For actual daily use, I am not sure you will see a difference, as the S is already mostly butter smooth and has the design factor as well.
My reason was this..
PURCHASED XPERIA S and RETURNED within 15 minutes !!!
Guys,
Today I make up my mind n decided to purchase xperia S, enough waiting for GX/Hayabusa..
But once purchased, while playing with it, I found that the lower part of the XS (below the transparent strip) is loose, I can move that part n looks pathetic
I went to the store, he exchanged immediately with another one, that too was not looking very solid !!!
Its just me unluckily or luckily saw that or its design/built issue

Your luck, probably early batch. 12w11 here, the build is rock solid, even port flaps.
Same here. No build Quality issues at all. Mine is 12W16.
The port flaps also seem well built. As for lag, I don't think GS3 would be noticeably smoother in daily usage than XS. XS is already almost on par with Galaxy Nexus and Htc One X in terms of real life usage even with Gingerbread.
ICS update should make things even smoother.
As for the GS3, nope I won't buy a Samsung phone ever. The GS3 design is a joke and its too big for my taste. Plus has an inferior camera, and a much less sharp screen with over saturated colors. No thanks
These no. 12w11, 12w16 are written on back right? After removing the back case???
Or is there any way to identify the batch seeing the Box itself!!
from xperia PLAY
Mate are you serious? Haven't we already had a thread like this that got kicked to the bottom of the forum?
Found here THREAD CLOSED
Again this is for the General discussion thread not for the Xperia S forum.
Not starting a flame war, just stating fact via my opinion.

Im staying with my XS.
Main reson is the design that looks like no other mobile out there.
And i a everyday use, i dont think ill notice the difference in dual vs. quad power.
The screen size is allso a problem for SIII. Its not the size of the boat, its the motion of the ocean thats important.
We've been through all this before!!

[Q] [HELP] Should i buy a Xperia P or Galaxy Nexus?

Hi All,
I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Let me elaborate:
[Background]
Currently on my first android phone, the LG Optimus One and considering it's almost a legacy phone, it has an active dev support and even JB Roms were made for this device. However, i'm currently using the MIUI ROM nd really loving it's interface.
[Current Scenario]
A friend of mine will be coming down from USA, and asked me if i wanted anything, So i thought it will be a good time to upgrade my phone, as i am really tired of installing a custom rom almost every other week, also tired of the legacy ARMv6 phone,
So i searched in newegg, amazon for a phone under 350 USD, and narrowed down to Xperia P and Galaxy Nexus.
Now, I know that if i get a Galaxy nexus, I'm sure i wouldn't have to worry about updates and the really strong dev support, but on the other hand I really love the looks of Xperia P. Also i feel a 4 inch screen is perfect and it has a better camera too.
Now I'm really not into gaming on the phone, and would like to use the "phone as a phone" mainly, with internet browsing, music, HD videos and photography as the other uses.
I also feel that a 4.65 screen is way too big to fit in my pocket.
I have a few questions regarding the Xperia P:
So i'd like to know how the build quality of the Xperia P is?
Is having a non-removable battery a major CON?
Is the Sony 'modded' version of android good enough to not use the custom roms?
Will there be a dev support for Xperia P in terms of custom roms and kernels in the near future?
All in all, which phone do i finally choose in that budget range?
Regards,
CD

Ok, I have XP for couple of weeks. Build quality is excellent (aluminum unibody) and screen is gorgeous (bright and colorful). I think that non removable battery isnt a major CON, but the capacity could be (about a day on single charge). Sony ICS ROM is fast enough and it looks ok. We have allready couple of custom ROMs and Kernels including CM9.1 so I think that future of developing on XP is bright.
Which phone to choose? Hm, I dont know, both are good, its up to u and ur taste.
Edit: XP will get JB in Q1 2013.
P looks more slick and feels solid to the hand than GNex.
But spec-wise and current software(buttery JB), it's GNex advantage over P.
Tapatalked from my Xperia P
So Galaxy Nexus's only advantage is the super fast OS updates?
How does the camera and music compare between them? The screen isn't that important to me, as i feel there will be a negligible difference between them... Please correct me if i'm wrong

Build quality is sexy, recieved a lot of compliments from my friends, really looks and feels like a premium product despite its mid range price. Having a non removable battery is only a con if you're the type to carry around a spare battery (I dont tend to this) for when youre running low, but with quite a small battery this might be a phone that people would have liked to able to remove the battery, but you can still reset the phone without a battery pull. I very much like the experience of Sony's android, looks nice and is quite smooth in my experience, but up against JB on the nexus not so great i guess. Im hopeful for some dev support in the future, because Sony arent the best when it comes to updates right now we're close to getting cm9.1 i think, i cant really say much on what the future of this phones development holds i dont know much about development... But if you're picking between the Xperia P and Nexus, the nexus has more future support and a better screen and better chipset. Dunno about the nexus camera but ive found pictures and videos taken on my P a bit grainy, and shots taken with auto settings arent always great.. I'd still go with the P because i like the look of it, that was a big thing for me, how the phone looks.

It's kinda sad that Sony ditches it's products even before a year is completed for the phone, for example the 2011 models aren't getting any updates and i'm sure the same fate awaits the current series of Xperias.
To be honest, I'm really tired of installing custom ROMS frequently, but then i have to depend on them as my current phone(LG Optimus One) has a pathetic stock rom. But Hats off to the devs at the optimus one thread, they even managed JB(CM10) on that phone.
As long as the stock rom is decent enough, i don't mind using an 'older' version of android. Therefore the advantage of frequent updates that the galaxy nexus enjoys doesn't apply to me. i just want a stable phone.
Even the bigger screen of Nexus One is a deterrent for me. Atleast thats how i personally feel.
I'd like to know how the battery life of the Xperia P is, as i'm reading a lot of conflicting reviews regarding this part.

Battery life is decent, about one day on moderate use (1 hour of talk time, 2-3 hours on wlan, couple of sms, couple of camera shots). And about updates, I got ICS update, and one small update after that (bug fixes). XP will get JB in Q1 2013 (new rumor say in early December 2012). Three updates in less than a year, enough for u?

If you just want to use your phone as a phone without gaming or watching videos the battery should be good enough in the p.
The stock roms are great and look amazing, I prefer them to vanilla android.
The update policy of Sony is okay, even if the 2011 only 'got' ics. I mean, not many other companies update their low end / not flagship phones. Many people I know didn't even update their 2011 Xperias to ics because they don't like it (or don't care). For anyone who depends on the newest firmware there are custom roms.
I'd get a p because of the look and the camera. You can update the p to a newer firmware with custom Roms but there is no way you'll ever get a better camera etc. for the nexus.

I feel the screen legibility outdoors is unbeatable in the case of the XP (maybe due to the extra white pixel) , though I have only compared it to the nexus s and HTC legend...
I like the feel and class of aluminium finish (HTC and Sony) more than the plastic feel of Samsung...
Outdoor shots using the stock Sony camera are truly brilliant in detail, but I wish I could say the same with indoor photos and low light photos -both are afflicted by a great amount of noise...
For music, as mentioned earlier, you get the Walkman app, nuff said
I get a day's worth of battery life with moderate 3g/WiFi usage and 1hour of calls, but I carry around my charger just in case and I have a car charger for busier days... Sony's implementation of fast charging is also good, the battery reaches 90% within an hour...
The software updates for Galaxy Nexus will definitely extend beyond JB, but the same cannot be said about Sony...
I ordered the Xperia P guys
Thanks to everyone for helping me making the decision

Galaxy S3 sold Xperia Z or Galaxy S4?

Well i finally said goodbye to my Galaxy S3, will i miss it nope not at all, mainly because it suffered from both dust issue's around the edges, and had probs with 32GB sandisk memory cards, other than that it been great.
Now because of the probs with the Galaxy S3, I'm tempted to skip Samsung this time around & head over to the Sony camp with the Xperia Z, what i seen so far it nothing short of brilliant, looks like Sony have really got their act together now, just hope they also get their act together when it comes to future updates aswell.
BUT
There also a small matter of the Galaxy S4 in the next couple of months, the thing that will put me off the Galaxy S4 if the design is based around the Galaxy S3, i don't want to have another smartphone suffer from dust around the edges again, as this pissed me off no end, but i'm a fan of touchwiz I loved the last update on the Galaxy S3 like split screen ect, and I've no doubt they improve touchwiz again with more new features on the GS4.
Then we got the specs, which will probably blow the others out of the water, but will it matter on Android 4.2.1 as the others will also have simliar specs ie Quad core 2gig of ram 4G ect, all very capable of running latest version of Android in 2013 and into 2014.
Also the camera is an important feature to me as i tend to use it alot, Sony really has a good camera on the Xperia Z with HDR video recording, picture quality is top notch aswell, going off what i've seen on Flickr.
On the Galaxy S3 the camera for a smartphone was superb, the lowlight feature that was added in the latest update is nothing short of brilliant i think.
I think the Galaxy S4 will probably use the same Sony Sensor that used in the Xperia Z unless they decide to make their own that is.
But eitherway camera is gonna be good.
I've got a hard decision to make over the next couple of months to get either the Sony or hang fire until we see what the S4 gonna be like.
In the meantime with the money sat in the bank, I'm now using my Nokia Lumia 800 as my backup phone, which in all honesty isn't a bad little phone and makes for a great backup Smartphone.
Don't let the door hit ya on your way out.
Anyways, the Z looks nice but Sony is known to be slow with updates. Maybe the Z could run aosp nicely though.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I'm with you. I'm waiting for the Z to be released in my country to buy it, it looks great and the specs are awesome.
Sony are very developer friendly, AOSP "aware" too. Samsung... aren't. Sony tend to get their hardware designs correct, Samsung struggle with basics like flash timings -SDS (even their own brand eMMC).
You decide. Pros and Cons for both, personal preference is the only matter.
GET the S4. the Z might look nice, but it's hardware is basically outdated. S4 PRO is a 2012 chip, not a 2013 chip. It also isn't REAL a15, so Tegra 4, Exynos 5, and the "s" series, s600 and s800 will beat da crap out of the s4 pro in the Z. But it's your choice, if you want already outdated hardware.. go ahead..

it'll be outdated. just wait for the first coming comparisons with the S4 and Z. I can guarantee you that the S4 will blow the Z out of the water, reason why, is that it'll have a REAL a15 SoC.

Here is your answer Sony released kernel source for Xperia Z before the phone is even available for purchase https://www.xda-developers.com/andr...ce-released-prior-to-worldwide-device-launch/
Go for the Z.
Kernel source isn't much dude... But good job trying to market for Sony. Besides they are required to do that anyway by GPL. They need processor data sheets, the binaries source.

Is the Xperia Tablet S right for me

I realise posting in this section will get me biased reviews, but Im 99% sure the xperia tablet s is right for me just want a few opnions from people who have one.
My situation is that my windows laptop has about had it, it still works but even after a fresh format it just doesnt keep up with me these days. For the first time ever since my first wndows 3.1 machine I am wanting to move away from microsoft completly and move across to android (I will be keepig the windows laptop in a cupboard just in case theres something I cant do on android such as root a phone and such, you just never know)
I got myself my first android phone back in April which is an xperia T and I have fallen in love with it, I have rooted it, unlocked the boot loader and now got it running exactly how I want with no glitches, at the time it was a close call between the T and the Samsung S3 however after owning the T I am glad I went with sony over sammy mainly for how professional and business like it feels, the samsung just looks and feels like a childs phone compared in my opinion
This leads me to the tablet obviously the xperia z tablet would be my ideal choice, but I just cant warrant having that much in a tablet so my options came down to:
Xperia Tablet S
Nexus 10
Galaxy Tab 2 10.1
I really want to stay with the Sony Brand mainly because I love their take on android over samsung or stock android, Im just a little worried that Im buying something that is a dead or at least fast dying tablet? Mainly because sony seem to have discontinued everything now, obviously they are really pushing the z phone and tableand seem to be neglecting almost every other model
Would I be better going with the much more popular tab 2, samsung do seem to keep things well updated and there is a much larger raange of accessories?
Or paying out a little more and getting the superior Nexus 10? The display sounds fantastic and I am sure I would love the nexus 10, but its quite a lot me expensive than the s
I would use it for emails, typing on the internet in forums, surfing the net and controlling my synology disk station, then maybe when me and the misses go away watching a film, but that would be about as far as I would ever need to push the tablet
Just wanting to hear real world opinions and such on the xperia tablet s, if you have one, do you with you had something else or do you love it?

Wait for 2nd gen Nexus 10. These Sony tabs are locked down and don't really get any updates anymore. I would wait for the next Nexus 10, and either get the new Nexus 10, or get a used 1st gen Nexus 10 when the prices drop.

Thanks I have been half thinking that, I just love the Sony android style, like the idea of phone and tablet being the same. Does the final fw for the xps have issues or is it a great firmware? If it's perfect I don't really need future updates, however if it's poor and the bootloader is locked, guess I would be stuck. Thanks

Right now, the XTS has some issues with Wi-Fi even though one of the updates was supposed to fix it, and I've heard of a bug where the Tegra 3 will only use 2 cores instead of all 4. The core count bug is fixable with a root app, but it's not exactly permanent and it doesn't always work. And trust me, even though you say you won't mind not getting updates, once you flash 4.4 or some future version of android on your phone, you will change your mind. The screen on the XTS is crap too, with bad color saturation, low resolution, and bad viewing angles. You would be much happier with a Nexus 10.

Thanks for the advice, I'll take it and get myself a nexus 10 shame not to have the Sony ui, but the nexus seems a great device, can't justify the extra for the Xperia z just to get the Sony ui.
Never know I may even end up preferring stock android

There are plenty of Sony themes for ROMs with the theme engine anyway, so if you unlock the bootloader on the Nexus you could make it look similar to a Sony anyway

Yeah thanks for the suggestion as I said in my original post its a little more than I want to have in a tablet to be honest.
I have actually ended up buying a nexus 10 and a 2nd gen nexus 7, as I couldnt decide which would be right for me, Ill have a good go with both of them and decide before factory resetting one and sticking it back on ebay, fortunatly good condition second hand ones go for about £5 less than brand new ones on ebay.
I just couldnt decide between them if I wanted the screen size or the weight advantage
