[Q] Question on bootloader and recovery and freaking warranty - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi there,
as some of you may know my Ultra is awaiting repairs as of now, and I'm almost certainly waiting more than a month to have it back.
I'm more and more convinced that the reason why it didn't boot anymore (and it didn't charge while it was on before turning it off) was setting up a profile on SetCPU where it put the CPU steady at 300mhz while the screen was off.
Then maybe while booting the processor hadn't enough power to even boot.
I don't know.
I happy it got sent to warranty because then they will solve the back cover problem as well but...
I'm actually regretting not unlocking and having a custom recovery installed.
I'm regretting that maybe that way I could have done something more (like flashing the standard profile for SetCPU).
That I could have done a freaking nandroid backup.
That said, could I have done any of that?
Or, "baking" the processor, the recovery would have not booted anyway?
I'm so pissed because I come from an S3, where I messed up trying A LOT of times, but nevertheless everytime you could flash via Odin and you were good to go.
Because I thought Sony made unbrickable devices, and I found out it doesn't.
Sorry for being so delusional, but try to put yourself in my shoes.

Didn't it boot AT ALL? You could load the bootloader?

It booted only the Sony logo, then it stayed on for like 10 seconds, some times flashing logo on top/bottom, some times a white dotted line flashing after the logo, and then off, and then again Sony logo and so on.
Tried to repair it with PC companion, Bridge for Mac, SUS, and it went right every time, except that in the end nothing changed.
I got so mad (together with the back cover) that for the premium price I paid I want a FULLY FUNCTIONAL device.
What's bugging me is the fact that the device couldn't boot even with the full reset... and that is going against the "SetCPU is the culprit" theory.

I understand why you're angry, but this is 100% your own fault. You did a thing that you should be REALLY careful with, and things went straight to hell. This is 100% user error. It would've been different if it happened out of the blue, but that's not the case here.
What's done is done and blaming everything except yourself is totally normal, and I don't blame you. I would like to help you, but the Ultra is my first Sony device, so I don't know how everything works yet.

Yeah you're right, I know it's my fault, but I can't think how a deep reset/repair didn't fix the problem.
Let's not forget it didn't charge before I rebooted it, that was the main reason why I rebooted it in the first place.
Maybe the back cover let some water inside? I don't know, but if that was the case, I guess the phone shouldn't have booted at all.
On the other end, the back cover itself was NOT a normal thing to get on a £550+ device.
On any Samsung device, you could mess with anything (well almost), but in the end you could always rely on Odin to flash stock and begin again.
Ergo, I can't believe it was just something stupid like setting the CPU values too low...
But hey, I wouldn't have sent it for just the case, maybe that was simply meant to be...
Anyway, I will update the thread if I have any news from Sony service... thanks for the support!

Yeah, cross your fingers and hope that they don't notice that you've messed with it A lot of repair centers doesn't care if you've rooted etc. so let's hope it goes well.
I remember when I had an HTC Touch back in 2007 and I had flashed a custom ROM (WM6.1) and overclocked it up to a blazing fast 247 MHz (from 200), and the result was a fried motherboard. I sent it in and didn't tell them anything. 2 weeks later; BOOM, fixed

That was my initial fear, but since the ZU processor is supposed to go as low as 300mhz (if you download SetCPU you'll see in the moment you don't touch the device it stays in the 300/600 range), I more and more suspect that the real problem was another one.
I remember with the Nokia 6600, to spare time I pushed an app into the internal memory, to change cards and put it back on a bigger Mmc later... as a result I got a bricked device...
Anyway, I really don't know how they'll discover anything, since I restored it 3 times via 3 different programs, if there was a chance that a little bit of data could be remaining, I'd say overwriting 3 times has done the trick...
The thing I fear the most is water damage, because you're on a thin line there, and I used it in water that se evening too.
It showed no problems at all then, so I guess it wouldn't have booted at all if damaged by water...
Unfortunately we'll (maybe) discover the real reason when it comes back...

Let me tell you from my long sony experience.
You can normally revert ALL changes messes with SUS or flashtool, we was able to do this even before Samsung released Odin. That's why everyone says sony devices are unbrickable.
In your case I think you may have a hardware fault in your device, to be honest as it seems to me all units which got sold in Asian region before worldwide release are acting really weird.
Have you got such a Asia device?

Water damage:
there are two humidity sensors in the device. One external and one internal. The external one is inside the microSD card compartment. The second in inside the aluminium body. If either of these are no longer white (we can only check the one inside the microSD compartment) then your warranty is void.
Good luck!! Hope you get a replacement... :victory::victory:

Anyway, I thought I could restore anything with SUS, I honestly didn't try with flashtool because I thought I could jump in and solve the back cover problem too.

I thought so. But how could you get the internal sensor??
If the lifted back cover caused this problem how could it be my fault?

[Q] Sooo my rooting experience had gone from good to bad...

I am not a newbie to rooting or at least I think that
But, my EVO 3d has been acting very wierd since rooting in december. I used the HTC method with hboot 1.5 and used reliable roms (infected, miui, mikrunny)
It has never been the same, I have to periodically reflash new roms because the phone would freeze up, ghosts start typing on the touchscreen, certain part of the screen I can't touch, pressing power button would wake the phone and start the music
I have used various recoveries (twrp 1, twrp 2.0, twrp touch, cwm 4, cwm 5, cwm touch) with most stable being twrp 1 except for the fact that turning off the phone and restarting it causes it to be stuck on the HTC splash screen.
Just to explain the severity of the situation, the volume and power button have almost been fully pressed inside the phone from starting recovery and bootloader menus, the back case tabs are broken
I am soo bogged down with the phone, that I just want STOCK HTC software with 100% reliability and nothing else.
Sounds like your digitizer is going. I had the same problem. Bring it in and they will either replace the digitizer or the phone.

There is a sticky for going back to 100% stock and s-on. Or u could wait for the next official update and just take it

Yeah that's what I was wondering, can I just accept the newest HTC update and be "fully back to stock"
i personally belice its either you or the phone ( most likely the phone) doing weird things..... just go stock and get it replaced brother man

OK. This might sound like a dumb question... But when was the last time you pulled the battery and left it out for thirty seconds? An all voltage clear is sometimes all it takes. Also... Do you use a screen protector?

I had the same problem with the ghost typing. the problem was the digitizer. If you have insurance on the phone then set it back to a stock ruu and bring the phone in to sprint. this is what i did and i got a new phone overnited and had it the next day.
Its as I feared I dropped my phone in water like a month after I got it on launch day, I just didnt want any bias if I told you guys first.
BUT the problem was NEVER there when I had stock HTC, it only started after rooting since december, where can I buy this digitizer?
I do have a screen protector so I'll remove that and put a new battery in, maybe it'll fix the problem

Update: I have taken off the screen protector and there was some water left in it
I have installed a new battery too and most of the ghost touching problems have gone away.
But I have a new issue, I cannot get any rom to reboot for some reason, I have tried all the recoveries (ext4, twrp, cwm) I have to flash boot.img from fastboot if I want to load the rom after turning off the phone. Is there a solution for this problem?

Galaxy Note repaired with an upped flash counter

I sent my Galaxy Note into Samsung to get the screen repaired.
When I sent it off, I realized that I forgot to reset the flash counter.
I was scared ****less.
Anyway, they repaired it and it is about to be sent back to me.
I just thought I would let everyone know that there is nothing to worry about.

I think you just got lucky bud and I would not encourage anyone else to do the same thing. Just because they agreed to fix your phone doesn't mean that everyone else will be as fortunate. Samsung and your phone carrier clearly stated that if you do flash a non OEM ROM you will be voiding your warranty.
Also, lets wait till you get your phone back before you consider this a success.

Yeah. I wouldn't recommend it. I feel like if I sent my phone in for some sort of software issue I would be out of luck.
I will update this thread when I actually get the phone back.
it might depend on the repair in question. A screen replacement is just hardware so they may not mind the software being a custom ROM. I sent in a GT 10.1 with AOKP installed to fix a screen issue. I'm sure they noticed the angry rainbow unicorn when they booted it up. They fixed it no problem though annoyingly, they actually WIPED my entire device, sdcard and everything back to stock. On the GT 10.1 boards, no one has had that happen except me.
I have to send my note in for a repair on my SD card slot, which keeps popping out the microsd. My phone has a custom rom and probably 3 on the flash counter. I was hoping they didn't care since it was a hardware issue. On a side note, it sucks that AT&T doesn't give out loaner phones while it's being fixed.

Makes me wonder if they just gave you a different phone? Or you memorized the hardware numbers? I agree with you being a hardware issue, they are probably not going to care about the flash counter. If you sent them a boot looping device that had the flash counter up high, then i would suspect they might say something.
No real worries guys. I had to send my phone in to Sammy for a screen issue a couple days before braway released the counter reset. They repaired it with no issues, wiped the ROM and reset the counter for me lol. This was back in late March.
Edit- in my case, they gave me the same phone because the Bluetooth physical address was the same. They replaced the screen including the front glass, so I didn't get my screen protector back.
Im pretty sure the techs there get paid by the hour and Im also sure that they themselves(techs) flash custom software on their devices. If I worked in that dept, I would spend the extra time resetting your flash counters and reverting you to stock, only to make my day go by quicker... I wouldn't recommend betting the farm on that. IMHO

I sent it off Monday and I already have the tracking number for the return shipping. In any case, I am using my old iPhone 3g until I get my phone back. It's always good to have a spare.
So people wouldn't recommend it, but who here has actually been denied service with an upped counter?
Traditionally, going all the way back to my Nexus One, the phone manufacturers don't care about root/s-off/flash counter if it's a clear hardware issue. If your button stops working or your screen doesn't respond anymore or your phone doesn't charge, they generally fix it.

Of course its best to have a backup, but at the time I didn't. I didn't expect a loaner, but when the CSR on the phone said I'd get one...then the store says no...well, we have problems.

My device was rooted. Yellow spots and mic broken > no warranty:(

Summary: enjoyed Xperia S although yellow spot problem. Microphone broken > RMA > no warranty, no repair, because of rooted in the past.
As early adopter I have been using the Xperia S a couple of weeks. Great phone!
I have unlocked it and rooted it since the beginning (for firewall, lbe privacy guard). Used the good and clean firmwares. Did no fancy things but just enjoyed it in an optimal and safe way. Just like how an experienced poweruser likes to use his phone.
Since the beginning I had the yellow spot problem. But I could live with it The device was just great! Suddenly my phone broke down, the microphone didn't work. First I thought it was the carrier, but programs like Shazam didn't work either. So it really was the mic. I tried a reflash, and even flashed to .76 firmware what was just released. Just to try the most before sending it RMA... It did not work so I had to send it RMA.
Now, more than a month later, I got the device back. Unrepaired!!! And I had to pay 85 Euro's.
Why: 'the software in this phone has been modified'.
A broken microphone and the yellow spot problem. No repair, no warranty, just because I used a firmware with some more userrights (root) once ...
Is this normal? Is this how Sony works? I regret it, now I have a more than 500 euro worth brick. Is there something I could try? I am not that rich...
Im sorry to hear that
Some companies need to realiase that root has nothing to do with faulty hardware.

Think my S3 is hard bricked, what do?

Hi guys, my phone is flashed so I guess that will make this whole process painful...
But here is the story, I have omega version 12.1 I think (maybe 11 or 13) it has been on my phone for 1 + months now, so I am fairly certain it isn't anything to do with firmware. Phone wont turn on, wont go into download mode or anything. I have tried taking the battery out and leaving it out for 5 minutes, still nothing.
It was working fine before I went to bed, had 10 percent battery and was just on home screen when I put it on charge, not in app or anything. Then seems to be hard bricked after waking up, so happened sometime overnight.
I am not with a carrier, brought it locally outright at my local consumers electronics store (JB-HI-FI)
Since it is hard bricked to the point it wont turn on in download mode does that mean there is no way for them to know it is flashed unless they fix it (in which all is ok)?
Never done a warranty return, do I just take it into store and they send it off? How long will this take?
On top of all this I cut my old sim doown using a cutting template, and it appeared to slide in fine, but after trying to remove it today the push eject isn't working, and tips to get this out, doesn't appear to be enough room to grip it with tweesers.
Thanks.
So as we keep on saying in all posts, the next step u have to make is try with an usb jig.

Since it's already harbricked, i'd say just turn it in and let Samsung fix it for you. It is under warranty, and last time i brought in my i9000 that I bricked, they just replaced the phone. the jig is ok only if you already know where to get one or how to make one, but if you have to go out of your way for it, just use the warranty.

Ok, Think that is best, can't really go without phone for 2-3 weeks while waiting for a JIG to arrive.
Just a few questions about the service centre, do you think they will ask me if I have flashed the phone? Cause I'm afraid they will think the brick was caused by that (could be) but probably unlikely since it died during the night a month after its latest flash.
If they do get it working will they go in and check the flash counter? Then what happens?
And lastly, if they ask me if I have flashed it should I lie and say no?
Thanks for the help.

Nope brisbane here, thanks for the offer though. What would the chances be of a JIG fixing it though, cause I have a feeling the mainboard has died. Kinda wish I didn't turn off the red LED charging light, apparently some others who's phones hardbricked the light still turned on showing some sign of life.
Any suggestions on sorting out the micro sim card issue now, assume I have to get it our before taking it to service centre, or just leave it in for them to fix?

-it will force the S3 in download mode
BUT
-it will not reset the flash counter like with S2
Got a little bit of good news, this might help other people out with jammed sim cards, NO damage and worked like a treat.
In the top of the sim card holder down the bottom left there is a little circle around one mill wide, got a sharp thumbtack and pushed it gentelly into the sim card, the just applied a little pressure and the sim card started to slide up, was very easy, had a great grip on the sim cad and no damage done trying to grab it with needle nose pliers like I read elsewhere, now to get the phone replaced or unbricked.
Thinking about it more I think it is a hardware fault, cause I had flashed the correct version of omega for international S3, I havn't had any wrong signs like freezing or crashing, been working flawlessly for over a month, then out of the blue completely dead. So I think I will just go into the service centre and tell them I suspect the motherboard has died, or the charger port (didn't charge over night), dont have a spare battery to test with though).

That video is pretty cool, don't have an old connector to try it, but seeing as my phone didn't hard brick from a flash going wrong while flashing or wrong firmware or anything I have a feeling a JIG or similar wont work. Would try it if I had the connector though.
How often do batterys and charger ports fail, cause that could be another reason I guess.

Ok, thanks for the info, I've tried everything besides a JIG to try get it into a download mode, so I doubt they will get it into download mode, Ive seen a couple of other cases where the S3 has had a mainboard issue, only other thing is in the last week I have been using the wall charger where as I normally use the computer and usb, so not sure if this could link to it though, might have got a power surge, but had no storms in months so unlikely and the fuse box is modern with pretty good protection. Ill just go in and tell them it was working one night, and dead when I woke up the next morning, which is the truth. And if they ask if its flashed, ill miss understand them and say, not the screen wasn't flashing/flickering when it died, I was asleep
Reality is though if they get the phone to a restored point to where they can see the flash counter, then I no longer need their help to fix it.
One more question. At the service centres do they try fix it while I'm there, or do they tell s to come back in a few hours, or do they ring a few days later. And if they can't get it in download mode do they normally give you a replacement there? Or do they ship it off to get parts replaced and then ship it back taking weeks/months?
Thanks
I'd give the jig a chance. Just imho.
Btw it is very likely that the jig would arrive in, like, 24-48 hours if you choose the right seller, while other users already told you it's probably gonna take more then a few days (probably from 2 weeks to a month) for samsung to "close the ticket". In my experience only with apple you'd be up and running in less then a week.

I'm sure they will ask you to come back in a few days or even weeks. Don't think they will replace new unit for you. They will just replace the faulty part.

I have the same issue so thought i would post here rather than starting a new thread.
Here's the story for mine. Working fine on current rom for about a month no issues at all. Today battery got to about 9% then switched off and i haven't been able to get it to turn on again, no download mode,no recovery, no charging led nothing at all.
I had to change my screen a couple of days ago, has been working fine with the broken screen for months, have i now voided my warranty?
A lot of faulty s3 i think... My s3 suddenly died last night. Battery is around 90+. Check the phone and it's not responding. Power button doesn't work. Doesn't even go to download mode or recovery mode. I'm running on stock ICS with root only. Sad part is I don't have any access for a jig right now. So can't test it. Bought this phone in SG and I'm in the Philippines right now. Warranty is good for SG only. Dec would be my next trip back to SG. By then no S3 as of now. For a phone I'm getting depressed LOL!
over the air jellybean brick my phone unrooted unflashed phone
BEWARE EVERYONE!! when updating to jellybean some do go very wrong! not all! but some do!! and it will brick your phone!! i updated over the air.. and for a few days. my phone kept on freezing! and locking up! one night i went to bed woke up and the phone was stuck on the boot screen! i thought thats weird took battery out, put back in, as ya do.. nothing took sim out and back in nothing... so only option was to reapair it through kies. put serial in and model number in it found the sortware. i downloaded it. told me to put phone in recovery mode.. so i did, kies said it was gonna install it to my phone.. but everytime it tryed to install it kept on saying it couldnt find my phone.. i tryed this all day long used different usb ports. different computers. to know avail, so my only option was to take it in for repair.. so i took it back to phones 4 u! they sent it away, i waited over 2 weeks! which was undiscrible it was like i lost my right arm with no phone! as you can imagine.. than the repair center turned round and said that the phone has been rooted! which it hadnt!! and they said this in order to brake the terms and conditions of my warentee so phones 4 u can get out of giving me a new handset. so they all save money!! i wouldnt do that to a 500 pound phone!! the phone does everything you could want from a phone! im launching a full investigation into this matter.. and have writen a formall complaint to phones 4 u headoffice, and will be contacting trading standards, ofcom, watchdog, and the ombudsman, and plaster it on all the forums ,social networking sights i can think of, to give them as much bad press as possible!! untill my problem is resolved and i will restore there name and clear it once they have done the right thing by me
I am afraid I can also report a bricked S3 here.
Rooted two weeks ago, but did not yet install a rom. Didn't Triangleaway yet aswell.
Same problem as described, I was browsing the net, and suddenly, screen went black (off). Could not get it powered on anymore. (nor in download/recovery mode)
So i brought it to the local telecom service center of my office, they could tell me the battery was fine and the buttons were working but they never saw one in this state.
So they are sending it to a samsung repair company.
This was two days ago, heard nothing yet, but I am very curious if I will get repaired or if I need to pay because of the rooting.
Will post the result if I know more.
Does anyone know if this problem also happens to people who did not root?

[ADVICE] Preparation | Sending a bricked handset to Sony

Having a bricked phone through whatever means is a pain. That's a given. But, are you worried about Sony denying you repair due to certain "modifications" on your phone?
Having bricked my Xperia U at least 4 times now, each repair has gone perfectly. My phone was full of modified software (Custom ROM's, no DRM keys, modified TA partition, etc.) but they still were happy to repair it. My advice to anybody who is sending their Xperia in to Sony Customer Service.
Flash a Stock FTF (If you can). If not, never fear. I've sent in a completely fried phone loaded with CyanogenMod, and they've still had the courtesy to repair it.
Think of a realistic fault, other than "I tried to unlock my bootloader by modifying my TA partition" or whatever. When you're explaining it to the service engineer (Whether they're your provider or Sony directly), state that it's got a "touch screen fault". Come up with an alibi on why your device isn't working, for instance:
I charged my phone overnight. When I turned it on in the morning, it just refused to boot. The red light flashes but that's it.
ACT DUMB. The more tech-savvy they believe you are, the less likely they are to accept you under warranty
Obviously, take this advice with a grain of salt. Whilst lying is horrible and unethical, if it saves you buying a new phone then I believe it's worth it.
Many thanks,
-Toby

Haha, awesome news. I only made this thread for people who constantly ask for stock FTF's and such so they can send off for repair
I love the last advice lmao
Thank you for this advice...

Just say:
"Have you used custom rom?"
"ROM? You mean CD?"
