If your using the supplied Sony headphones then that is most likely your problem. I had the same issue. Swapped them out for some cheap HTC ones and honestly I struggle to turn it up more than 50%.

I'm using the earphones supplied with the SBH20 (or SBH52, they're the same), and via bluetooth, setting the volume at max on the phone, on the headset I can go to 70% max before actually feeling my he'd exploding.
Using the device itself and hooking up said earphones the volume is definitely lower, but nothing that the equaliser can't correct.
Anyway, I mostly use (for music) a pair of Beats Solo HD or a pair of Beats Pro (given the size of the phone, the latter are the ones that suit best ), and I have 0 problem with those.
I wanted to get a better pair of in-ear earphones like Sennheiser but gave up when I've read about lots of hear loss cases with continuous use of in-ear earphones... don't know if it's true, but I'm planning on keeping my hearing capacity until I'm at least 80... so it's 50 years from now...

I don't like in ear headphones, just cant get to grips with them.
For the price you really can't go wrong with these HTC ones. The sound quality is really good, and definitely loud!!

I ordered 2 pairs to test and will be ordering more for spares (I keep losing them)

Yeah... problem is I'm kind of a logo freak, so I'd never put on some HTC earphones while holding a Sony...
What I'd really like are a pair of on ear that are foldable (I mean really foldable, not like the Beats) and nearly indestructible, I use a messenger bag when I'm out or a bigger bag when I'm at work so I want to be able to fold them and stash them in a pocket without worries.
I guess I never searched for them, and I usually forget the ones I have at home, ending up using the cheap Sony ones I have attached to the SBH52...

Thanks to dsp manager, I up the the bass real high when headsets are plugged in and thanks to the ibeats being able to produce high amounts of bass, my music on the phone sounds amazing!
I was wondering if anyone's ibeats have blown out because the bass was set too high? If not, I may be the first to report this in the future lol, hope not.
I have heard them pop with some frequencies when the bass was up, but I have maxed them out and I don't think they will blow. Hey since the headphones came with the phone are they covered under the year warranty? Or do they have one from monster?
I have to make this quick. If you want more info send me a message.
The only thing that will blow any speaker is distortion which you will hear.
Never turn the volume up all the way. At this setting the sound will likely not be clean and clear but it has nothing to do with volume. Most audio sources will distort at full volume. If you want it louder use an app like PowerAmp and increase the preamp output instead.
If its still not loud enough get a headphone amp! I have one and the iBeats will go so loud it actually hurts my ears after a few minutes.

Don't quote me on this but I remember reading that they are covered.
Yes, they are covered. I was having problems with the control module on the headphones - the play'pause/talk button, specifically. I called Verizon and they told me I could take them to any official Verizon store - not the "authorized dealers, but an actual VZW location - and get them replaced.
The second pair works beautifully but I'm planning on selling them. I'm going to pick up a pair of the Beats Tour earbuds, which will also work with the phone.
And one last item of curiosity - I plugged in my Shure se110 headphones to my Rezound last week and, to my surprise, Beats Audio fired up. Pretty cool.

I've been considering for a while to buy a good headphones and I've decided to buy an audio technica ath-m50. The only thing that is bothering me is the yamaha audio chip. If I buy those headphones, I'll be using them most of the time on my sgs2.
Will the yamaha chip make the ath-m50 sound like a cheap low-end headphone?
If you happen to own an ath-m50 I wold really appreciate it if you could measure the hollow of the earth cups, diagonally and horizontally maybe. I've read that people with large ears may find them uncomfortable. The length of my ears are just below 7cm(I don't care, they are small, my mum told me that)
I've read supercurio's analysis of the audio chip but my question still remains.
Waiting eagerly for any response.
Get an iPod nano- excellent sound quality and a great price. I hate using my GSII for music though Poweramp is a great app

Well, if you really want to use a pair of high end headphones with the galaxy sII, get a portable amp like i did. I got a fiio e7, and it powers the ath-m50just fine. Listening to them straight out of the GSII audio jack wont let them utilise their full power. And dont get an iPod if you want really high quality audio. :-/ (Just a suggestion )

I've thought of this, the only problem is finding a store that sells the audio technica ath-m50. I live in London I'm sure there is plenty of stores.
However this would not be much help because I'm not very experienced with high end headphones, so probably almost anything will sound good to me.
If you want to listen to boom boom music with heavy bass then the SGS2 is inadequate .Expensive headphones are not going to do that much .
However as a user who does not have any boom boom music i find stock player headphones or slightly upmarket low end Sennheiser headphones fine .
Power Amp for me strangely lowers sound output level .
jje
I've the same experience as JJEgan with Power Amp. It seems to boost dynamic range at the sacrifice of overall volume.
For getting the best out of high-end headphones, you could always try Neutron Music Player from Android Market. It claims to use its own "32-bit audio music rendering core", although it's debatable whether this makes a difference, given that uncompressed CDs only have 16-bits per sample. People seem to like it, though.
Just recently I noticed something when listening to music using Poweramp with a headphone.
When you click on something such as the app drawer, the volume of the music that you are listening to increases for fraction of a second then it goes back to normal.
It can be very annoying when you are using the phone while listening.

Tried Neutron at the weekend, and these old ears couldn't see - OK, hear - what the fuss is about. No difference from Poweramp with a very unscientific ABX on my Sennheiser IE8s.
Definitely the worst UI I've seen on any music player though - so hideous that it should win awards.

Senn HD25-1s and Ety ER4-Ps both sound fine straight out of the headphone socket.
Using poweramp, without any eq or tone control tweaks, just ~30% crossfeed.
I read all the reports of crappy audio on the GS2, so when I got mine and tried it I was very pleasantly suprised.
Whereabouts in Poweramp settings is crossfeed...Didn't realise Poweramp supported it ?

I am evaluating. Even if I keep it, it remains to be seen if I will move away from the Nexus community. Open source spoils ya and I'm not too happy on how its locked down, even if it can be worked around.
Re: Beats
It takes upgraded speakers to withstand the amp, IME. I have a laptop with 6 speakers and a sub inside and the amp inside the laptop even pushes them to the edge sometimes. I've actually come close to blowing out some cheap skullcandy over the ear headphones
I have also found that some music sounds a lot better with Beats turned off (although the amp still has a part in that).
Sorry, but Beats Audio over the built in speaker is totally pointless. It will not make a blind bit of difference. I'd recommend one of these and at least then you wiill get decent sound if portability is a problem.

a beats speaker could give higher quality audio and higher output sounds, its about the same size of an in ear... and no thanks, i was just wondering because this is my first time with an htc phone, and the commercials always made it seem as if dr dre actually used his speakers and not jus endorsed each other lol
I used Klipsch Image one and Klipsch M40's when I had my One X and would always, I mean always, turn off the equalizer because it would just make the sound muddy and drown out the speakers with bass. From what I understand, this is really just a software equalizer for the headphones.
Still never understood how audio quality and Dr. Dre = Monster branded Beats by Dre.

Unlike the One X, this has upgraded hardware too.
From HTC's press release:
Authentic Sound
The DROID DNA by HTC has a unique, 2.55-volt, built-in headset amplifier and dedicated amp for the external rear-speaker to help boost the audio signal to deliver crystal clear sound with less distortion, even at maximum volume. The combination of amplified hardware and the rich, authentic, studio-quality sound of Beats Audio™ allows music to be heard the way the artist intended, and enhances the sound quality while playing games or watching video.

Not that it's necessarily a big deal. All speakers are connected to an amplifier. It could be a 1 watt amp or a 2,000 but all speakers need a decent amount of juice to make power them, relative to other components.

I have four different types and the settings are not accessible with any of them plugged in, it still says the same thing, not accessible through speaker when the headphones are plugged in so something is messed up. If you can't change the beats settings with beats plugged in then what's the point of even having the freaking setting ? It's really annoying.

Sony makes a really nice set of headphones with the mic, If any headset works as stated above, that would be a pair I would consider. Walmart has them and also office depot, and usually theres like 3 or 4 models about 5 - 10 bucks apart.
There's been a few times i was traveling or something and needed a pair quick or the kids lost my girl's pairs, and a quick trip to walgreens and $15 got a nice set of stereo ear plugs and I know some of them have the mic and headset controls that will work with the headset hook mod.
Don't laugh but try Big Lots if you have 1 near you. The last time I was in the 1 near me they had a ton of ear buds & over ear headphones real cheap.

PowerAmp provides a small boost, which makes the puny LG headset just loud enough. Sennheiser speakers generally seem to be louder, though most of them have 32ohms impedance, 16ohms should be louder, theoretically. I like oldskool headphones without silicone plugs, i don´t think the new ones will last one decade like my Sennheiser MX550. I just bough MX400 MS for less than 10 Euros, looking cheaper than the MX550s, they provide the same sound quality and volume.
The LGs headset plug is Apple compatible, without an adapter to switch mic & GND connectors, Samsung and Sony stuff won´t work. Nokia´s needs the adapter to play music w/o distortion, but control buttons will never work.
