[GUIDE] Ultra owners care and maintenance guide - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hopefully this thread will be a place to go for new Z Ultra owners. Specifically how to keep their devices running smoothly by knowing how to care for their device... Please add your comments of help, and I will include them in the OP...
First port of call: If you are thinking about rooting or changing ROM's then you will need to look at @bASKOU's thread. He's done a fantastic job of maintaining this thread. Your one stop shop about modifying your Xperia Z Ultra.

CARE & MAINTENANCE
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
[IP55/58] Waterproof:

As you are well aware our device is water proof. With this comes some drawbacks.
Speaker & Mic: Because there needs to be a semi-permeable membrane covering these, the amount of sound transfer is less than what we have experienced with non-waterproof units.
CARE:
-Do not use your device in salt water. This will perish the membrane, and cause water damage to the speaker / mic.
-Do not wash or use your device in soapy water. The soap will also dissolve the membrane, again causing water damage.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dust & Water Proof covers:
The ultra has covers that stop dust and moisture entering the device. There are rubber O rings that fit nicely into rubber connectors. This provides a seal against water and dust. However there will be times that small dust/ grit will gather around these O rings, and if not cleaned regularly and carefully then this will cause the O rings to perish, or even worse, allow water to enter.
CARE:
-Use cotton buds to wipe around the O rings on the flaps, and around the device rubber seals. Keep them as clean as possible
** DO NOT blow into the ports in an attempt to clear the dust. This may cause the rear panel to lift, and delaminate from the Aluminium frame **
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
MicroUSB Cover:
The covers that keep the Ultra waterproof stand to get a lot of use. Plugging and unplugging via USB cables, inserting and ejecting a microSD card. Each time friction occurs on the O ring and rubber connector we risk creating gaps, and increasing the chance of water entering.
CARE:
One option is to use the magnetic connector to charge the Ultra. These come in various forms, ranging from an actual dock (DK30), to a simple cable. Available on eBay or DX-Box
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Frame & Structure:
@Imdking posted a thread about his device twisting. When placed on a flat table it rocked, indicating that it had bent.
The Ultra is made of an Aluminum frame and toughened glass covering front and back.
The Ultra can fit in a pants pocket, however I am sure you have noticed when you sit down its pushing the limits.
- Sitting down with the phone in the pocket may bend the frame. This could even lead to the glass corners popping out.
CARE:
-If you have noticed your device not sitting flat on a table/ flat surface. Then hold your device at the top and bottom. Twist the sides slightly in the opposite direction to correct it.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Screen Protection:
The Ultra comes with a rear and front screen protector. These are pre-applied by Sony. The rear comes off easily and can be replaced quickly. The front is more difficult. It has an adhesive that will make it very difficult to remove. (It is still possible to remove, but the Sony logo will also be removed)
** Sony's front screen protector has a coating on it that is supposed to reduce fingerprints. This film comes off!!! So beware. Removing Sony's protector and/or applying another protector overtop of the existing Sony protector is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED **
There are many on the market and depending on your needs, you may need to do a little research.
Options:
These are the only two I have tried. Super Shieldz was easier to apply, and was easy to slide your finger over... perfect. XtremeGuard attracted dust, and could not remove due to its stickiness, but is very thick. So may be more heavyduty
XtremeGuard - LINK Very clear visibility. Thick, tough. stretchable. Sticky. Once on, if you remove you'll need to throw away.
Super Sheildz - LINK Matte, anti fingerprint. Thin, stiff. Rigid. Easy to apply, remove and reapply.
Using water to apply screen protectors makes the job easy. Remember that screen protectors will allow water to evaporate through, it may just take a few days.

Hard Power Off:

No doubt at some time over the course of owning your Xperia Z Ultra, you will find yourself stuck. Your device wont finish its boot, or has frozen. There is a simple solution:
1. Open the microSD card cover, and locate the little red button.
2. Press and hold this down for 3 seconds. You device will vibrate and turn off.
3. Power it back up
4 (boot into CWM) or allow to reboot

To enter the 'service' side of the Xperia Z Ultra, navigate to the 'phone' dialer, and enter the following:
*#*#7378423#*#*
Within this service side, you can:
run diagnostics,
calibrate sensors,
customization settings,
service settings/ tests/ information.
Here is an example of Calibrating the proximity sensor

Typing in the above code caused my phone to shut off.
Nearly had a heart attack lol. it came back on some seconds later without rebooting...
Are you sure this is the maintenance code????
Won't be typing that into the phone again in a hurry...!
Maybe I did it wrong...?
can you detail the exact process?

Yes, it works. Open the dialer and insert it there. That's it.

Thanks - That is what I did.
I'll try again when I get more courage!

Ham bro thnx for great guides

Ive left the stock protector on the back. If you were to remove it, then I would recommend applying one immediately. Even dragontail glass will scratch. Plus if you want to resell your device, then you'll get more money. :victory:
- Ive also added a protector on the front (over top of the sony one) and i needed to recalibrate the proximity sensor

To save the USB rubber cap use the charging station or EC21 Magnetic Connector instead!!!

No, the logo on the back is on the glass. So you'll be fine.

I wouldn't suggest people order their magnetic charging cable from DX-Box.

why's that? Have you had a bad experience?

Well I ordered the cable nearly two months ago, it still hasn't arrived. put a paypal claim in against DX-Box and they sent another two weeks ago, which still hasn't arrived. It doesn't take that long for a cable to come to NZ from China.

Strange. I ordered mine and it arrived last week. only took two weeks to arrive. I've purchased a few things of DX and never had a problem. Maybe someone liked your cable over at customs!

Figure 1
You can now remove the back housing from the rest of the smartphone. Do this by carefully using a safe open pry tool to lift the outer edges, unclipping each clip holding the housing in place.
With the back cover removed, you now have access to the motherboard. The upper portion of the motherboard will have one connection located on the back side of the motherboard. Carefully lift the motherboard away from the rest of the screen assembly and carefully release this connection. It will be a "jaw" connector, so you will need to carefully lift the back flap of the connector and slide the flex cable out of the connection.
Gently fold the motherboard towards the bottom of the phone. There are two (2) flex cables that will need to be released. Both will be covered by mylar tape. Remove the tape and release both jawbone connectors. With these flex cables released, you can remove the motherboard from the rest of the phone.
Figure 2
Now, heat the front of the screen using a hair dryer or heat gun. Use quick movements, not staying in one area for too long. Medium - high heat will be required to properly warm the adhesive holding the screen assembly in place. Take your time and reheat as required. Also be aware of the 2 flex cables that are located under the screen assembly (touch screen and LCD screen flex cables).
Figure 3
Once the screen assembly has been removed from the housing, you can now use a small flat head screwdriver or similar to carefully separate the LCD screen from the touch screen digitizer. Heat may be required.
You can now replace either the touch screen digitizer or the LCD screen.
Simply replace the damaged parts with the new ones and reverse the order to put your phone back together again.

Sticky Glue
Just a quick q, the digitizer is glued to the lcd screen. When separating the digitizer from the lcd there's a lot of glue residue left on the lcd. So of course the question is how to remove the glue and what do you use to glue the new digitizer to the LCD? Any detail would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance
The best way to remove the adhesive is to heat it. You can use a hot blow dryer, this will loosen the adhesive bond. You can purchase adhesive strips from our website when sealing it back together.
Thanks

Test Lcd
Paul, I'm interested in purchasing Digitizer and Sticky Strip but am also considering LCD/Digitizer already assembled. Is there any way to test lcd screen once taken apart to ensure I haven't damaged it while taking apart.
Thanks

You can do a visual check if you are worried that you have physically damaged, however the easiest way would be to have it installed in the phone and power on. If it works as normal it is fine.
just got an amaze with a cracked screen, gona take the digitizer apart first before ordering any parts, but i'll post some pics. and i'll connect the lcd to test and make sure that i didn't damage it lol and for the one who wanted to test maybe that will help you
EDIT: Can't change just the digitizer, i did my vivid and sensation (as well as every htc phone i've had) but this one is different, it's done iphone 4 style, can't separate the glass from the lcd. gota get the assembly. i'll post pictures later
Screen / Digitizer
So you can't replace just the screen / digitizer?
You can replace the LCD and the touch screen digitizer as one fused part or you can replace the LCD and the touch screen digitizer separately.
Power button connection?
The repair has gone well so far however i have run into a problem when putting it back together. the cable leading from the power button was just glued to the motherboard and i just peeled it off to remove the motherboard. Now how do i reattach this connector?

Usually you will find it still has enough "Stick" to simply put back into place. If however it doesn't you will need adhesive strips. These can be found here - Adhesive Strips

Replaced Screen - Stuck in Boot Loop (I think)
So, I followed the instructions, was as careful as possible and didn't tear or break anything that I can see or feel. But when I try to turn the phone on, it just vibrates once like it does at normal start up.... then continue to vibrate once at about 15 second intervals and the screen remains black. The LED lights up when I plug it in to power, so that bit seems to be ok. Both pressing the power button and plugging into power starts the vibrating loop. If I attach it to computer, the device does not show up. Any tips or suggestions or where I might be running into an issue?
Edit: The phone software is stock - this is my first foray into doing anything besides popping the back cover off and taking the battery out. Just to double check, I took the new screen out and reassembled with the old one and get the same issue, so it's not the new screen that's defective. The old screen was working just find despite the many cracks from screen-planting on pavement.

Hi,
It's hard to say exactly what is causing the issue without seeing the phone but it's sounds like everything hasn't been re-installed correctly. Check over the installation and make sure everything is fully connected.

When plugging the three connectors back into the motherboard, how far in should they be? I tried to push them in as far as possible, but I was afraid of jamming something or tearing the tabs on the side. If I check and everything is fully connected, what could other possible issues be? Thanks very much for your time.

No need to force the connection, just press in as far as it will go (with the jaw unlocked). The side tabs should be close to connector itself, but will not make contact. Once fitted, lock it in place with the jaw and try testing again.

.....8 of them around the phone and one of them in the middle around the part where you insert the battery....
3. this is where it gets just a bit tricky you must "pop" off the screen i used a plastic razor blade around the bazel work around the phone it should pop out without much struggel but be very careful not to bend the digitizer it can break..
4. ok once u removed the screen out of the back cover there are 2 screws connecting the motherboard removed them and disconnect all ribbon connections
5. ok this is where the tricky part begins........first of all i want to say and just to be safe that im just typing this to help out because like most i dont want to pay 200$ for a new screen and digitizer so if you try this and fail im sorry and please dont blame me...
ok start of by using your blow dryer(what i used) or heat gun and work it over the phone not to close and dont just aim it in one certain spot work around it up and down laft and right.... once you do this about a minute or two very ooh so very carefully incert ur blade at the top this is the best approach so i think...and lift up if need to ask someone to keep using the heat gun while you do this it will save you lots of time..once you start to pry up the glass it will start to crack more and more that fine....once you start to remove the glass pieces (use tweezers) try to wedge a playing card inside (the card helps out soooo much you can work it in between the broken glass and the digitizer with out harming the digitizer)....now if you can with one hand more the card down the phone and use the heat gun you will start to see the glue separate from the digitizer....just move slowly and carefully.... just keep wedging the playing card and using the heat gun.
6. by this point you should have more then half the glass removed that part took me about 10 mins.. ok one thing you have to look after once you get to the buttom is be careful once you get to the buttons (home back search menu) try not to damage the connector under the screen what i did once i got to that part was i lifted the last of the glass and carefully pulled with tweezers.....then voila!!! the glass should all be off the digitizer...
7..to clean off all the glue off the digitizer i started by using a new playing card and using the edges i scraped the screen not using to much pressure once i got off what i could then i honestly used 2 microfiber cloths one i sprayed windex multipurpose on it(the cloth not the phone) and started to rub it gently that should help remove just about all of it then i made sure the edges where clean no glue on sides no little broken pieces of glass on buttom or top of the phone where the adhesive is...then used a clean micro fiber cloth to just give it a final wipe...
8. for putting on the new glass i did not use new adhesive....nore any type of new glue....i just made sure i had everything ready to go made sure i was not missing anything...every clean no glass pieces no glue on digitizer..MADE SURE DIGITIZER WAS 100% CLEAN....theni grabber my brow dryer heated the adhesive on top and buttom of the phone got it sticky again then i quickly BUT carefully placed the new screen on applied a little bit pressure and help it for about 2 mins let go and BAM!!!! stuck on to the phone...im sure you can use new adhesive but mind my cheapness to not spend that much money...lol.....
9.now its time to connect all the ribbons back on screw the 2 screws holding the motherboard....snap back the screen onto the bezel.....screw back on the 9 screws insert your sim and sd cards power that bad boy up and hope for the best.....
so like i said before i have no prior knowledge on taking this phone apart... i have changed one other phone screen and that was an iphone but if you have done that before you know thats easy as pie...i really really hope i helped someone out there...i left my iphone to this phone and i am in love with it i compared it to an iphone and the iphone looks like a play phone my son would play with....so a crack on this beauty is a no-no.... so if your up to it buy a new glass about 15 bucks including shipping on amazon... razor blade a blow dryer and about 5 playing cards and patience and you have a new screen.....now if you live in arizona and are close or whilling to drive to my town of queen creek i can help you with this and if your screen is super bad and i mean where theres no way of using it because the glass is shattered and have a video camera and are whilling to come to my place to record a how to video i will attempt to repair your phone free of charge i have an extra screen i bought just incase i messed up but pm me and let me know for all others good luck and i hope i helped

Cool guide. Where did you buy the replacement glass? After using it for a while, does it seem as scratch-proof as the original glass? Hard to verify if some of the replacement glass I see sold is actually OEM or even the same quality.

Safe open Pry opening Tool
HTC Droid DNA Repair Guide:
It is very important that you make sure your device is powered off completely before performing this repair.
To start you will need to remove your simcard and simcard tray.
Next you will need to remove the back cover of the device using a safe open pry tool to release the clips holding it in place.
Now that the back cover is removed you will need to gently remove the black protective film covering the motherboard and internal components.
Next you will need to remove 13 small phillips screws as well as the 2 Torx T5 screws as detailed in the figure below.
After all the screws have been removed you will have a total of 5 antenna cables, 4 jaw-bone connectors, 2 pop connectors, and the battery cable to remove before you can proceed.
See figure below for screw locations and flex cable connections.

The next steps you will need to take your plastic pry tool to gently lift up the motherboard so you remove it completly. (be sure all flex cable connections have been release before attempting this)
In order to remove the upper circuit board you will need to release the front camera from the housing using your pry tool.
You will now need to remove the black film covering the power button flex ribbon so you can gently peel it away from the housing.
See figure below for reference.
Now you can gently insert your pry tool under the upper circuit board to remove it completely from the device (be cautious of the power button flex ribbon as you do not want to tear it)
You can then take your plastic pry tool and lift up the lower speaker assembly to remove it.
You will now need to take a pry tool(s) to lift up the battery from the inner housing. This battery is held down with strong adhesive so you will need to be extra cautious not to bend the battery when attempting to lift it away from the device. You may find inserting a second pry tool will give you an equal amount of leverage to prevent bending the battery.
Finally you will need to gently peel away the volume button assembly from the housing and slide its flex cable through the slot in the housing.
See the figure below for reference.
Now that all necessary components have been removed from the device you can begin the process to remove the LCD & digitizer assembly.
First you will need to use a heat gun or a blow dryer to heat up the adhesive holding the screen assembly in the frame and outer housing.
Using a setting of medium heat for roughly 30-45 second intervals just a few inches away from the device. Make sure to evenly distribute heat to the outer edges of the screen as well as the back of the housing. (Be cautious not to hover over any flex cables you do not want to damage.)
Once the adhesive has been warmed up enough you can now insert your safe open pry tool in between the seam of the housing and screen assembly to gently separate them.
Work your way around the housing by sliding your plastic pry tool along the outer edges to give you enough room to completely remove the screen from the device.
See the figure below for reference.

Thanks for this. I just put a couple deep scratches on my screen ( they're driving me nuts) and was on your site checking for price, and watched your YouTube video just 2 days ago.
I used your video tutorial to replace the display on my OG Incredible after it fried due to moisture. You provide excellent guidance and products. Thank you

What do you guys suggest for adhesive for this phone? No matter what I can't get the sides to stay down after replacing the screen because the bezel of the housing is so small.

Some times we have found that if you can lay down a slightly wider piece of adhesive on the inner bezel then using a SHARP x-acto knife or razor blade you are able to cut along the edges of the bezel to lay the adhesive down. Take your time if you attempt this method and be careful not to slice your finger. Hope this helps!
Is it easy to sperate the lcd from the digitizer? I've heard it can be pretty difficult? what would you rate the hardness to replace a cracked screen? And Any recommendations for who to get fixed with?.. Thanks for the comprehensive guide

It's not impossible but it can be very difficult if you are not experienced and do not have the proper tools to perform the repair. We ALWAYS suggest using the LCD+Digitizer assembly for those who are trying to repair a damaged screen themselves. The screens are bonded together and trying to separate them could lead to LCD damage or a heap of nasty glue on the LCD. Use a complete screen assembly. It may be more expensive, but it will save you a lot of hassle and potentially extra repair costs.

I regularly use 3M 300LSE tape on iPod touches. They are these really thin strips placed out on a sheet. They are really strong and don't make a mess.
so..... I dropped my phone yesterday. glass is still fine, but lcd is bad(scrambled image)...
where's the cheapest place i can get a replacement lcd assembly from? as long as it's oem(doesn't have to have verizon logo)

Do you know if they give 'store credit' for broken screens? I have around 50+ iphone 4/4s screens I'd been meaning to recycle... would be nice to get credit for them towards a new DNA screen.

anyway, i just tried the 'live chat' & got through to someone. so at least that works.

It was none at all. But I pulled those reflective stickers off old one and it lights a little bit now. First two are lit pretty decent. But last icon not much at all. It was a one piece guide w three squares, one for each icon. But the third square ripped off of the strip so its independant now. Could this be why the third one isn't as bright ?

Baseus smart case: cheap S-view alternative

I have been waiting long time for a cheaper alternative, and today I found this case on Ebay.
So I just ordered it through free shipping, normally it takes 2 weeks to get free shipping stuff

Nice find! I wish they wouldn't have made the bottom part of the case a different shade/color.

Even though I agree with you, I still think it is kind of unique and the colors mix is nice.
Alright here we go.. I purchased this on the 21st and got it today which is not bad considering it came from China. I'm not that great writing a product review so I hope pictures speak louder than words.
I'll just describe the product instead of listing the pros. All around this case is pure plastic, I can't put my thumb on it but it is plastic and screen side (with the window) is flexible (just like the OEM). The window is not glass so it'll be prone to scratches and finger prints. Comparing to the OEM case I feel that the window quality is pretty sturdy because the plastic window doesn't feel cheap when I bend it, tap it, or flick on it. Continuing on the front side, there is a speaker hole so you can listen on to calls. There is a indented quote "design endows product a life" midway below the case. And at the bottom.. yes it a metal button just like the metal design/quality of the home button of the actual phone.
Moving to the side, just like the OEM, there's indented prints for the + and - volume keys. Nothing much else to look here.
On the back, the Baseus logo is indeed metal and has a nice feel when you smooth your finger over it. The camera and lens is kept protected with the case on so it's not protruding out.
Functionality of the S-View: the two metal pins on the back of the case is indeed for the control of the sleep and awake feature for the phone. So when I close/open the S-view, it will awake or sleep and will show the regular OEM functions (i.e. S-View slide to unlock, camera, action memo, and music player shows up).
Cons:
three things that bug me about this case. Metal button in the front (really?), as you can see in the photos the case does not fully close all the way (won't bother me as much because the sleep function will works), and since it's flexible plastic I feel that the flap (the side plastic) overtime will wear out and rip.. well that just normal wear and tear of products.
Overall I'm actually very satisfied with this product. I didn't want to purchase the OEM S-view case and sought better alternatives for the S-view cases. I found this and I'm truly again satisfied. Try it guys.. for $20 it's worth it. It comes in different colors (I didn't find full colors, only two-toned). Let me know if you guys are getting it!!
Sorry of the pictures are showing up side ways, I'm not sure why it is. (pictures taken with Note 2)
For a Chinese product it doesn't look bad. Please keep us updated on durability. If Spigen doesn't release theirs soon I might consider this one.

In your pictures it looks as though when laid on its back the front cover holds open slightly. Is the hinged portion of the case a soft material that possibly could break in over time?

Like I said in the description. The case opens out a little bit, but after a day use of it, the case gotten use to being closed completely in my pocket and now it's closed all the way now. And like I said before, I can't find the specific name for the quality, but it's flexible plastic and from what I'm seeing the cover inside material is fabric so I wouldn't think the hinge will rip that easily.

Good cover.
However on the front case there is not the hole for the home button. So the front case may not close properly.

What does that mean? Are you using a protruding home button sticker or something.
I have one of these too. I'm pleased with it, considering the price of it versus the S-view. I'm hoping over time the case will stay closed better.

Home button on ALL Samsung Galaxy models are protruding by default.
Bought one in White and Black. Really good cover. Does what the original cover does. The front of the cover does close properly for me and the home button doesn't cause the front to stay open. The only thing that was annoying me was the s view window has scratches on it already

[MOD] Clear Back Honor 8 [GUIDE][Hard MOD]

Warning: This MOD will void your warranty. You will have to open the device for performing this MOD. Only perform this MOD if you are willing to take a risk.
I took inspiration from Zack from JerryRigEverything to make a clear back MOD of our Honor 8.
It took me around and hour to do this. The only tool I used is a razor blade and scissors.

Guide:
(NOTE: I am not responsible for any damage you do to your own phone.
1. Slowly remove the rear glass by heating the glass with a heat gun and lifting it with a suction cup.
(You can find many guides on removal of back glass on YouTube.)
2. Remove the connection between fingerprint scanner and the motherboard.
3. Remove the leftover adhesive on the phone.
4. Stick transparent double sided tape around the phone. Make sure you don't cover the camera lens, flashlight and laser.
5. Clean the Glass:
-You can slowly scrape off the lamination by using your finger nails or with tip of the razor blade.
(I noticed that there is a heat shield that is present on the lamination, so by doing this MOD you will loose it.)
-If you use razor blade, the glass might get scratched easily.
-Before cleaning near the fingerprint scanner, remember the orientation of the scanner.
-Use transparent double sided tape to stick the FP sensor back into its original orientation.
-Clean the whole inside of the glass and get rid of fingerprints and stickiness.
6. Reconnect the FP sensor cable back to the motherboard.
7. Stick the glass back to the phone and apply pressure around the glass to make the glass stick firmly.
I am posting this after using the phone for 3 days and as there is no heat shield, there is not much heat on the glass.
This is so head turning that many were curious about this.

Ah, hello, fellow transparent Honor 8 user!
I just did a sin.
This sin. https://imgur.com/gallery/rD6Srsd
I put that on my phone.
But, other than that, I made my phone transparent last year, and have always been screwing around with it. Here's some advice from me:
The honor logo on the glass itself can come off. Just a *little* harder scratching and it'll come off.
The shielding on the motherboard PCB is detachable. It kinda clips in place, so it can be "pulled" off. It looks MUCH better with it removed.
In fact, a lot of things can come off and be fine. The flash diffuser can be replaced with Scotch tape, the fingerprint sensor and screen connector bracket can be removed, some metal can come off...
ok maybe I lost the flash diffuser and fingerprint connector and screen connector bracket but you get the idea.
You can put anything behind that wonderful glass. I used to have a piece of paper with my name on it, but I removed it. Now I put in, uh, an ahegao image, and it's secured nicely.
That's all I have to say. Good job on this, btw, yours looks nice and secured but my back glass keeps detaching from the adhesive, no matter how much I put on. Maybe it's because the plastic layer in between is stretched out and tries to force itself out of the phone...

Not that I know of. I've had my phone near microwaves and stuff without any issues. Most of the heat is generated on the other side of the PCB, with the SoC, but that heat gets dissipated through the aluminum frame of the phone with thermal pads. In fact, once I hit a capacitor with my pliers because there's additional metal under there that I tried to remove, and the tiny capacitor got ripped off, but my phone still works fine. No issues of any sort.

Woah, will remove those shields soon.
I'm thinking to stick a carbon fiber vinyl on the battery (just like mi 8 explorer edition), or anything cool.
Could you suggest some ?

I did the same till recently got bored of it and bought a new blue glass cover, if you really wanna make sure the glass stays glued, you have to use transparent b7000 adhesive, and if you lost the plastic flash diffuser like me, with the glue, make a circle arround the flash, so dust dont come in to the camera and destroy it.
