Please, dont use your XZU without a Sim inside. - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Reading around... well.. mostly because a premature firmware, but i must say that the device don't seem to work so well used as a "tablet only", like i read on the Sony Forum, like most users report several problems.
The devices stuck on language switching and also, on wifi troubling and random clicking, but i realized that this problems increase if a sim card is not inserted into the device.
You will definitively be not able to set a standard configuration for languages, and network if you do not put a sim card inside the device.
Sure it may interfere with network services and this may look like a device bug, but this is the fact.
You just need to put an operative micro sim inside the device... does not matter if you didnt put any commercial plan inside of it. I suggest just keep enabled to make and receive calls, but the device must be enabled into 2g/3g (you can always disable DATA, inside the menu, to not receive any charge for data transfer.)
This is my experience, if you dont put a micro sim, the device will keep asking you to switch language and also to keep inserting a micro sim card when you startup phone, also you may have problem during boot or during shutdown, and even... during screen lock and unlock procedure, if your device is not registered into a mobile network.
This is my humble opinion and experience, till the actual (buggy) .532 firmware.
I think at the actual firmware state, the device is strongly designed to operate with a microsim inside, without it may react in many crazy ways.

For myself I no longer operating my XZU with a sim inside and I don't have your problem. I set up the phone while I had a sim inside, but now I don't have a sim and doesn't have any problem. Did you plug your phone on PC Companion recently? They did a system files update on .532 and the firmware is really stable now (still have some trouble with backlight and some SOD) but I truly believe it is kernel related. It remind me of my Nexus 7 during the first 6 months, had SOD with stock and none with custom kernels.

yah, once configured is quite stable, but upon a reset, without a sim inside, is a troublemaker and do not store several configurations.
this is my experience.

I tested the unit in Sony Store before I bought it, All basic function works ok !!!

I think this is more because you chose to configure time zone and languages based on the network provider (might be like that as default, can't remember as I didn't do it for a while). So if you are not using any simcard then the phone will annoying you, as any other phone would do. I personally never use this fonction on any of my device, I better like to set all manually.

I have an issue with my phone (0.532) where it keeps asking for the language when I turn it on. I always have a SIM card inside the phone too. Anyone know why this happens?

Which country firmware do you have? I remember it did it on TW firmware, then after changed manually to English on the settings it never comeback. Now i have HK firmware so it doesn't try to put it in chinese anymore.

I used my ultra for 2days without a SIM since i havent got the time to have my regular SIM card cut to the size of the ZUs sim.. (is it micro or mini? Im confused on those lol)
And yes I noticed that whenever the phone reboots, it goes through the setup process.. I think SONY did that on purpose to make it easy to have the unit to be like a DEMO device at the shops.. Get my point? Instead of having the phone reset manually everyday, shop owners would just reboot the phone and its back to zero! At least that's what i noticed on my c6833..
once i passed the setup, i didnt notice any problems with it.. Other than having no mobile connection of course! Lol

Find stolen phone by IMEI number

Hello all,
Sadly, my SGS 2 was stolen at a railway station recently. I had removed the sim from the phone since the battery was low to put it in another phone. So it's lost now without the sim in it.
Is there any way at to track the phone purely by it's IMEI number (which is all I have)??
I'm totally wrecked that it's gone... I didn't have any tracking software loaded on the phone like AndroidLost /Cerebrus or anything of that sort. I did have Avast I think but I'm not sure if that has a tracking feature.I doubt if I can also use that remote installation technique (which one actually really works?) considering there is no sim on it with no net connection on it.
Help from the local police station in filing a lost phone case so that the IMEI can be reported to the network provider has been useless as they both seem to have better things to do and just keep me running in circles.
Is there anything at all left that I can do on my own now? I've seen a lot of sites where they say you can report your IMEI lost phone number and they say they will alert you if it ever comes up. But there seems to be a lot of them out there. Which one would be the most reliable to do this?
Has anyone else done this before with any success. Looking for the best possible information and hopefully some solution to get back my phone. It had so much of my stuff on it and I spent months customizing it. Really regretting now that I didn't take the time to load a tracking software on it.
Thanks for any help or insight anyone can provide.
Firstly, my sympathies. I can imagine how bad it must feel to lose your phone. Have you tried 'Plan B' by Lookout? It'll work if at all the phone is ever connected to a data plan/ wireless network.
Hope it helps.

Thanks Haxtreme, I've installed Plan B via Google Play online and I picked my SGS2 device and it said that Plan B will be remotely installed to my phone.
But is this relying on the sim to deploy the software to the phone? I don't remember punching in my IMEI number for my device on the Google Play store at any point. Does it already have the IMEI number? If not, how do I update that on the Play Store so it knows where to remotely install the software to?
Thanks again for your prompt reply!

No it uses your Google account not the sim. as long as its got a connection to the internet and is linked to your account, it'll get installed irrespective of whether the sim has been changed or removed. The IMEI and google account are linked the very first time you boot up a phone and it asks you to enter your mail id or create a new one.
The fact that it shows up in your list of devices when you log on to Google play via your desktop itself shows that its still linked and your account hasn't been deleted from the phone.

1) u can use 'Avast' antivirus which has 'Anti theft' functionality.
2) u can try some third party apps like 'Cerebrus' from stores and see
Well I am sorry for the loss of your phone but listen buddy... All these software stuff is not really gonna help because i don't believe they can give you any pin point location of the thief. What i did successfully, when my Galaxy Note was lost previous month. I had the original IMEI number and i had contacts in Law Enforcing Agencies of my country. I requested one of my friend there and he asked my IMEI number.Few days later, he informed me that my number is being used by someone and his calls are being tracked. Yet another few days later, he asked me to come by and collect my phone. When i visited his office, i found the thief locked and my cell recovered. The guy told me that while listening to his calls, the thief eventually revealed his location, while giving someone his address for collection of something. So Police caught him at the address. I dont know about your country, but if you have someone in these kinds offices, they can surely help. Thanx
One thing I dont understand is how a cheap GPS system gives mostly an exact global position, but these phones with all them tracking software dont.

theres not alot you can do unless you have a connection in mobile providers so they can track your imei number, if they found a s2 with no sim they would leave it off and use odin or cwm so tracking would be harder

I don't think the issue is that the GPS part of the mobile can't locate the position better or worse than a cheap gps system. For tracking a lost phone a well working gps is not enough. You also need a working internet connection and a clear view of the sky in order to get a fix. Like any gps system. It is the combination of this factors that determines the quality of a good tracking configuration.

Via apps like Cerberus and others you can set your phone to automatically send thief's mobile number via email or sms after they insert new sim. You can remotely get your phone to take pictures and videos (front and back cams), sound recordings. You also create pop up messages on screen (and take pic when they open it), remotely wipe or lock device, install the app as system app and also hide it from app tray.
So a GPS location is just a bonus really.

First of all I would like to tell you Avast has a very good anti theft feature (which is completely free by the way) if you had root it does allow nand write(for settings I guess) and integration into your rom(factory reset can't remove it then) only a flash operation can remove it, in settings if you had set friend numbers and safe numbers, the moment an unknown sim is inserted, messages are sent to your friends numbers informing sim change (you will get the the thief's number) also if you had enabled it in settings it will force both data connection and gps on too, you can track the phone with gps precision by sending a message (either via sms or their online portal) with the pin code(details are in their site), you can lock the phone, perform a wipe, sound an alarm many other functions. Avast also has amazing stealth technology and starts at boot, so if you want you can jump the thief because he will be able to see only his balance reducing while you remotely control your phone. The key thing you must do is set friend numbers.
Edit : The only way to bypass this security is flashing a new rom. Also it can't be un installed as it will be set as device administrator which requires password unlock.

I really do hope you had set friend numbers, Avast anti theft was very useful to me as sometimes my little brother "steals" my phone because he adores my s2, and sometimes I get really pissed so i remotely lock it rendering it completely useless, even if the phone is switched off and on it will lock again, unless I type in my pin or remotely grant access the phone will remain locked.

[Q] How to control power off and reset button?

The actual main question is the best way to secure xperia z ultra from theft.
Im wondering, How to control power off and reset button?
so if in any case my xperia z ultra is missing, no one can control in any way the device (including power off, reset button, etc.)
i was thinking make the reset button only accept a morse like signal pattern then execute its intended behavior...
if this is done, it would be great!!

Unfortunately with the actual devices and a bit of knowledge all those measures are kinda useless. This phone possess a hard reset button up to the simcard, so can easily turned off and repaired with PCC or SEUS.

Square credit card reader?

Does anybody use the Square credit card reader with the Z Ultra? It doesn't seem to be working, the app says it can't read the card no matter how many times you swipe. The same card works on the first swipe on my wife's Note 3. The reader and app used to work fine on my old Xperia Z, just not the Ultra.
I have rooted the Ultra, could that be the problem?
Any feedback would be great, as I use the Square reader for my business from time to time.
Thanks

Okay, so i just googled "Square reader not working on android" and it looks like a lot of people with a lot of different devices can't get it working. Not sure if it's Square's responsibility or Sony's since i've read one thing here and another there, so i'm not sure. I guess you can start by emailing Square and see what they say.
I use a card reader that I got from First Data and that doesn't work either. called the company and they gave me some bs answers and said it's a faulty headphone jack which I don't believe to be is the case. also tried it with the PayPal here card reader and no luck.

It might look like it's the OEM's fault. The jacks are fine, but they haven't implemented support for these "things". I don't know if a software update would enable this or if it's hardware. This is what i'm getting after googling, so it might be completely wrong, but a lot of LG, Motorola and HTC users are facing the same issue.
You guys should go to Sony's site and use the support chat and ask if they know anything about it. It's way quicker than emailing.

called Sony and they said that they've never heard of those kinds of devices and to make sure they are compatible with the correct TRRS standard version of headphone jack used. since Sony and Apple use the CTIA standard, that's not the problem since they worked on my iPhone. so now I'm back at square one. maybe someone else had a better idea. lol

Common solutions to card reader issues
I recently had issues getting my card reader to work with my Xperia z1s. I went through lots of different channels, and finally decided that maybe just updating my app would fix the issue. Lo and behold, it did. Another thing to keep in mind is that the device uses your phone's audio function. If audio is off or turned down at all, the reader may not work.
Hope that helps.
Both old blue and new black PayPal Here readers don't work on Z Ultra (Android OS 4.4.4).
PayPal Here says Card Reader Connected, but no matter how I swipe the card, nothing happens.
Haven't upgraded to Android OS 5, but both readers works fine on Nexus 7 (Android OS 5.1) and Samsung Note Edge (Android OS 4.4.4).
Just upgrade my ZU to v5.1.1 recently, and PayPal black reader works.

I've got a few problems. help

Ok so I have 3 major problem with this phone, I ordered this phone online and I don't think its a US version since I have a bunch of Chinese/Japanese apps...
first problem that really bugs me is that sometimes the signal disconnects randomly and I have to do a manual search (Settings/more/mobile network setting/network operators) to get it to work. I have t mobile all my settings are set to tmobile ... I don't know because its a foreign phone the radios aren't meant to work with us careers or the problem is from something else ...
Second problem is (this only happened to me twice) over the night my battery drains out.
Third problem is sleep of death, after the last update it only happened once but I want to know if anyone else is experiencing this.
over all I think this phone has good quality built but the software optimization is as good as a beta!
Do you have any ideas? Is there any US version or close to US version android system for this phone that I can install without rooting? Something with asian apps

I have this phone since yesterday but I can already tell you, that from what I know, there is no official version for the US market, yet...
I read something about a version comming up for Verizon I think. Anyways, this could explain your network connection problems. I would imagine that Z2 should offer a world wide network support, but perhaps it is not in this case.
The network problems could explain also battery drain. If the signal is bad or the phone keeps searching for network, the battery will die rapidly.
What I can recommend is to try and run the repair phone option from Sony Suite that you install on your pc or mac. It will wipe and reset your phone but also update firmware, if applicable.
If this does not help, then you will either have to return the phone or wait for some US firmware including US modem versions for the phone.

First of all - check did you got Sony Z2 or Chinese copy.
Try to check IMEI with Sony.
Second...
Z2 is quad bend device and it'll work on all continents but if you got Chinese only version (apparently it's a bit bigger, only few mm, I saw that info in screen protectors thread) then you are screwed.
I had many signal problems when I flashed German, UK, Italy....any other firmware except t-mobile fw from my country.
I had same problems, no 4g, signal lost every few minutes and battery drain (device is trying to connect to network but it can't and that's killing battery).
What you can do is (!first check do you have original Z2! - Otherwise you could brick your device)
Download few firmwares and try...
It would be best if you could find Global Generic firmware but I'm not sure there is Global for Z2.
Wipe all!
That's important to get rid of all Chinese apps and letters.
Yes, you'll lose data but who cares...
You need working device, right?
Not device with your data which cannot connect to network...
Test one fw by one and you'll find what's best for your region.
You don't have to root device, just enable develiper menu in settings and enable usb debugging.
Download flashtool (v16) and flash firmware by firmware until you find the best for you.
There's a big chance LTE won't work on those fw...
You'll have to wait for US firmware because of baseband files...
Battery will be OK after that..

try the best which suits you ,if u go for india there are some pre-installed apps which u may like or not
i did not tried any new FIRMWARES ,try countries like uk because english is the standard there
in flash tools uncheck wipe data so your old data will not be lost , but installing fresh firmware with wipe is best
what is sleep of death
if its something like you cannot wake up your phone for example when you recieve a whatsapp message and cannot open screen I have the same ****ty thing
I installed Canada version ... I'm gonna test it for a day

Did u find any background running apps from Canada version this may decrease ur battery
I do try to switch of lte which eats battery
Try to find in Canada firmware for does anybody has the same problem
I have an extremely poor reception in Canada. I bought my Z2 in Hong Kong and it is on 17.1.1.A.0.402. So does flashing to 17.1.A.2.55 fix this reception issue?
Flashing no firmware will fix your reception issue
Infact most of the issues the Z2 has is caused by google due to Z2 running 4.4.2, 4.4.2 has alot of base module issues and they are not present in 4.4.3 or 4.4.4
Reception issues seem to be common globaly, this apears to be 402 firmware, 55 and 69 both have no issues to do with mobile reception, or at least to me i haven't seen any

Whenever sony releases 4.4.3/4.4.4 you should have alot less issues
4.4.2 android we all know its self has some issues
Im quite sure 402 firmware its self is generally buggy, not so in noticable ways but underthe system you could say

BRF8 new SIM tray check - can't use my 2 SIM and microSD as before

EDIT: added samsung member official forum post:
https://community.samsungmembers.com/en_AE#/post?postId=338519&categoryId=491&page=1
I own a S9+ (SM-G965F) DUO.
Although Samsung chose to pretend that there is not enough space to accommodate 2 nano SIM card and a microSD, easy workaround exists:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/TF-Hybrid-Sim-Slot-Dual-SIM-Card-Adapter-Micro-SD-Extender-Android-Phone-HQ/152886554077?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649
It is a very simple thin layer wires to connect the nano SIM externally.
I used this solution perfectly with 1 nano SIM in the tray 1, 1 microSD 128go in the SD tray + the thin layer SIM adapter and my 2nd nano sim in the external tray.
Since BRF8 update, upon boot, there is a message on white background, over all the rest of the launcher and lockscreen, preventing me from doing anything which said basically "There seems to be an unusual object in your SIM tray, please verify". There is no button to tap, no way to bring notification bar, no way to get past it with home, back or recent button.
This is freaking stupid and I don't even understand why BRF8 included this stupid check: I tried all arrangements and the conclusion is that BRF8 detects when there is both 2 SIM and a microSD and then plainly refuse to to anything despite EVERYTHING working perfectly (I can still see both SIM signal and the micro SD perfectly).
So I really need some advice on how to get passed this stupid overlay... A few ideas:
- disable a system app/package with adhell3: sim toolkit ? dual sim config ? but risk is malfunctioning sim cards...
- use another launcher which can bypass samsung home screen / overlay ? or use another theme ?
- get passed the overlay message with a combination of button ?
- remove the overlay message somehow with adb command ?
- find a way to hide the SD mount to prevent triggering the message ?
The issue is that I want to stay on stock with locked bootloader since I don't want to trip knox...
Thanks in advance for any contribution.
Looks like I'm the only one impacted ?

Very pissed since this stupid message doesn't bring anything safety improvement, it's juste blocking a perfectly working feature for no reason !!!
Still planning to test disabling some apps with adhell3 to see behavior, as well as going through some logcat.
I'm still trying to work out why on earth anyone needs dual SIMs. Having said that, just because a thing exists doesn't mean its good or that it works well, either that or you could have a faulty one.
i have the same problem..i was using the phone with 2 sims and a 256gb samsung evo sd.
i think it's time to say bye bye to s9 + and look for a phone with larger capacity. 64gb is nothing

Having a dual SIM phone is very important for anyone who wants the same phone for business/personal stuff or for anyone who travels a lot (and doesnt want crazy roaming taxes). Also SD is useful if you want all your stuff in your phone and not your laptop etc

I highly doubt if you find a phone that has: AMOLED screen, IP68, microSD,a headphone jack and awesome performance. But you find so, please let us know

I would probably have to drop my second sim card....
OP6 seems like an OK option but no VoWiFi (which is important in my area) and no IP rating (I'm clumsy so.....)
Also I had bad experience with thier customer support with my OP3, so it's a no-no from me

I'm an expatriate and needs my home sim card + my local sim card. Plain and simple.
Please note that this was working perfectly prior to BRF8, they just added a check to prevent the use of 2 sim + a microSD although the phone totally handles it...
I'm also facing the same problem.
Same problem here, any solution?
Well, write to Samsung support. Every single one of you. Threaten to give it back, since it was working fine before and is not anymore. Only one way to get this handled - have Samsung revert the change, I think. Wishful thinking, I know, but what else can you do (especially wothout root)? If disabling packages does not help...

Ah OK. I notice that you put S9+ DUO in your first post is that significant? Its not something I've heard of unless it related to a dual sim model, in which case they shouldnt have blocked anything.

Of course it's significant: it's the variant that supports 2 SIM cards.
Yes, they shouldn't have blocked anything. And it's without notice or any information in the changelog (which is already a joke as the famous "optimized performance and bug fixes" on google play store).
I opened a topic on samsung members + asked a direct question/bug report to support.
https://community.samsungmembers.com/en_AE#/post?postId=338519&categoryId=491&page=1
Would be good as suggested to inform Samsung directly although I don't really have hopes...
