OK so my G Tablet is on the way and I've been reading and came across a comment on another forum that the ROM's that exist are built on the original stock software and that the most recent update may be causing problems with CWM? I will be getting my G Tablet on Wednesday, should I not do the update if I am going to be flashing a custom ROM? Thanks in advance!
drum747,
I believe everyone should make their own decisions. But if you ask me -- I'd tell you to simply stick with a stock G-Tablet right now.
When you get yours and go to Settings/About you can see the version -- something
like 1.1.xxxx -- probably 3588. If not, just about as soon as you get wifi connected
it will offer you an OTA (on the air) update to 3588. That's the current working version, and compared to the crud we had back last November it really isn't bad software.
It will lack the Market and some other things...you may have to be patient there.
But you can still side-load apps and download apps directly from a number of places.
But we are waiting. Our devs have found that there is software for a possible
Update 3991. The hope is that OTA 3991 will come down in the next few weeks.
If so, at 3588 stock you will be in perfect shape for that update. And then once you
have worked with it a while, you will be able to decide whether to stick with it -- or look at other options.
It seems like everyone who come in here looks at the ROMs available like a "all-you-can-eat" buffet. The immediately start flashing ROMs and moving around software
until something goes wrong and they are stuck. Indigestion!
With a good 3588 tablet, you can read and interact here and find out the biggest and
the best, and you can learn what you need to that when you are ready you can
move up to whatever you want without problems.
Do what you want. Enjoy the G-Tablet. I think it pretty darn good!
Rev
I agree.........
Stick with the most current stock version 3588. The next update officially available from viewsonic should be very soon, but I don't think it will be 3991 as advertised
3558 was different than what it started as, or it would seem based on what I have gathered from reading old threads.
ale
You know, I have a Droid X and have really enjoyed rooting it and trying different ROM's and was really looking forward to the same type of experience on this tablet. What is the advantage of waiting until the next update? Can't I update, do a full backup and go back to that if I want? Once I install a different ROM, I am then stuck at whatever update and no further updates? Is that why you are saying to wait? Are you saying there will be even better ROM's down the road based on the new update that is coming? Or just that the new update coming might have all the things we would like?
The next update might have some cool stuff... might even be as good or better than the custom stuff here... maybe...
Question is... did you buy the tablet to use it for media consumption or tinkering?
Answer that and you'll know what to do. Just don't forget to make nvflash to factory stock your best friend ;-)
A little of both I guess. Part of the reason I chose this tablet over others is because of the support and customization (and price!) I will try to wait for the next update before I tweak it (if I can!) Heh!! Thanks for the responses guys!! I appreciate the input!

This is without the best quote I could image. Tinkering without first using the tab and getting to realize it's not a giant phone is the first step I think everyone should understand.
And if you do tinker then you should expect it to have opportunities (problems ).
drum747,
Not addressing your abilities or anything about you.
But read all the crash and burn threads on this forum.
IMHO, to many people are trying to do to much too fast and are
messing up their tabs and have to be bailed out.
I'm just saying be cautious, move slowly and carefully and
don't get into trouble.
However, my advice still stands. If you move on to other
ROMS, etc. now, you will cut off access to offline updates.
Then you will have to go back to stock, etc. And
sometimes going back is as much as problem as going up!
It still would be easier to stay stock now and if an update
doesn't come down soon -- you will have read and learned
and be ready to make choices.
IMHO.
Rev
IMHO... if it ain't powering your pacemaker then learn how to nvflash and have fun.
Be part of the revolution or watch it happen... ;-)
Thanks guys! I get what you're saying!

QFT.
nvflash is not hard to get working. With a properly set up nvflash procedure and all the info on these forums, the gTab is an unbrickable as it gets.
updates
I upgraded to the vegan 7, gingerbread, how do I go back to the original stock to get the latest updates from viewsonic when update arrives?
Second that
I absolutely agree to stick with the stock ROM and play for a while. The 3588 update is very stable and usable when you change to Classic Home. I have been using it till now, side loading apps and enjoying a lot without having to worry about custom ROMS and such.
The people who are saying stay stock for the updates are glossing over the fact that the Vs updates will just make the stock UI suck a little less.
Before I bought my G tab I had never had any experience with tablets or smart phones or even android for that matter. I have flashed 4 or 5 roms onto my tablet without incident, no boot loops, no dead tab, no anything that anyone would consider a bad experience. I'm using Vegan 5.1.1 for the record, for the third time.
Read a few of the reflash to stock with nvflash threads to prepare yourself in case something does go wrong, but there is no reason to stay stock on this tablet theres to much dev goodness and too much customizationability ( is that even a word?) not to try different things.

Yeah I think it all boils down to what the individual wants and is willing to risk..this forum makes it easy and there are plenty of options to try just always prepare for the unexpected and dealing with the experimentals expect anything to happen!!
Who am I kidding?! There is no way I will be able to wait for the next update. I already have a ton of files set up to load on my G tablet. I will be Modding within hours of my full charge! Guess its just my nature! Thanks guys!
Butch, thanks I will be reading everything to make sure I do it right Thanks for the advice everyone!

Closing Word...
Everyone that has contributed to this thread--
I have tried to voice the side of conservatism and restraint and
good judgement in this thread. My intention was not to hurt any
feeliings or pick on anyone or rain on anyone's parade.
But if you read what's going on in these forums, there are a lot
of folks having problems. A lot of them are in over their heads and
some have been careless and others made honest mistakes.
I know for my part, I have been working hard to try to help folks
find the tools and make the decisions to get back on track. I'm sure
I have made mistakes and my opinions are mine!
But I speak for myself in saying that even though I am semi-retired
and have more time than most -- I can't keep up this pace. And I've
heard others of the helpers say the same thing.
I also call your attention to the "TwoTapsX" thread and the fact that
the moderators are aware of the problems people are having. Roebeet
has put together a splendid ROM that many think will be the next
generation of G-Tablet software. But because of the complexity of the
mods folks already have had in the tablets, and because of the human
factors listed above -- a lot of folks have messed up their tablets.
In My Humble Opinion: Somebody has got to say that in spite of all the
"opportunities" for mods in these forums -- folks have got to start
exercising more restraint, more good judgement, more common sense in
what they do.
The devs and the folks who are helpers here can't be expected to carry the
load of keeping everyone up and running with the current problem rates. I
sometimes don't agree with the moderators, but this time I see their point.
We users have a good thing here, but if it keeps being abused......

Having said that, I am done here. I wish you well.

Nice responce
I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace, and am seriously considering rooting it.
I've done a fair bit of research on it, and have found a few very detailed tutorials on going through the process.
I'm just wondering how common it is, it seems most people on Android forums have rooted their devices, and I haven't really come across anyone who has managed to stuff it up.
So, pros and cons?
why you should root it:
1. you can pretty much customize every part of your phone (software-wise obviously). while rooting does not do the actual customization, it opens you up to a variety of options (when rooted, you can flash roms and kernels that can significantly increase performance and/or battery life; not to mention all of the themes that you can apply, a good place to start would be here)
2. because you can (this may sound stupid but i believe this is true; i think android phones are meant to be rooted )
why you shouldn't root it:
1. you will lose the warranty that came with your phone
2. you can mess up your phone if you do not know what you are doing (when i say this, i am talking about messing with system files, not following the directions when you apply a modification; of course, this would not be a problem as long as you pay close attention to what you are doing)
in my opinion, i think you should

I agree, that's why I'm looking at doing it, I guess I just want to here from a few users first hand on their experiences with it before I go through with it...
root, root
I would recomend that you root your device. I did my first root to the phone I am using now and I am glad I did, I am able to remove a lot of the carrier bloatware that slows the phone down. Now it runs faster. As the other post said you void your warrenty when you root and if you do not follow instructions you can brick your phone. Anyhow take the plunge and root it you will be glad you did.

I know the feeling man, just upgraded to an android galaxy mini from my htc gene, that tough little bastard served me well for two years before it succumbed. Was thinking of rooting but you know how it is with new phone jitters, am not ready to start cutting into its software setup just yet. I'll take my time getting used to this platform before rooting. My reasons for rooting would mainly be to upgrade to gingerbread and delete the stock apps that came with the phone that I barely use like opera 5 -since I use opera 6- and also to be able to overclock the cpu to around 800mhz. Does anyone here think this could improve mkv playback for 480p videos? I can't figure out why mkv videos are such a pain to deal with. What is it about the container that makes it quite a challenge to android
any way to delete stock apps i don't use at all without the root? i own an xperia ray but there is nothing happening for this phone considering rooting.

I was in your place but after rooting my htc desire i just cant stop having fun with it
Seems everyone tends to lean towards rooting, I think I might spend a couple more weeks getting familiar with my phone, then go through with it
I have just bought my first android phone a week ago and I'm wondering if I should root or not. Based on everyone's thoughts I really think rooting is the best option specialy because my courrier modded the phones rom with a lot of bulls**t that I can't delete
But first I got some questions to ask:
1. If I install another rom on my phone will it remain rooted? Ex. After installing CM7 the phone will remain rooted? Also if I decide to go back to factory rom will it still remain rooted?
2. Is there any way to "unroot" it? In case I need to contact the warranty I could "unroot" and send it back?

You kinda just have to look around, because everyone likes something different...plus you have to keep in mind that ROMs are specific to the phone. If you like a plain vanilla Android experience, Cyanogenmod (currently #7) is extremely popular. It's a little too bare-bones for my taste, but many people love it. If you have an HTC phone, like I do, and you like HTC Sense but hate how bloated it is, there are tons of custom roms out there based on Sense. Just be careful, again, that you download a ROM for your phone model. I have an HTC Sensation, and I use LeeDroid's Sensational ROM. Some others to check out might be InsertCoin and Revolution HD, but there are tons out there.
Happy flashing! Let us know what you end up trying and how you like it.

ROOT. You will go through the process and if you read and follow every step correctly, you will ask yourself "thats it?" it really is the best thing you can do for your phone. If you want more battery life-- root. If you want simplicity-- root. If you want the latest version of Android (which really makes a difference in overall user experience)--root. Hell, if you want to have something that looks like an iPhone--root.
Go for it. Make sure to read and if you are comfortable with it do it and you will be glad you did.
I have a Rezound on Verizon and I want to get rid of Sense/Verizon crapware (blockbuster app that I can't delete? realy!?) and instead install plain-jane stock Android 4.0.
In addition to the stock UI, I want to be able to Tether like I used to on my Nexus One without paying an extra $20 per month or whatever.
I know very little about the unlocking/rooting process (are these asks even possible?) but I have been following these forums for a few weeks and I read they just opened up the boot loader and I am wondering what that means for me.
Could anyone give me a quick yes/no to those question and if yes, post a few links to how I might I do it? (I saw the "how-to" for using the HTCDev tool they put out today if that is what I am supposed to do...)
ps: Of course I tried to find an answer before posting and I noticed on similar questions everyone responded saying to get cyanogen ROMs but I would really prefer just going totally pure on this and with stock Google just like you get on a Nexus; is that even possible or am I misunderstanding how the UI layer works?
Thanks!
This will be possible within the next couple months. When HTC releases the official ICS update for the phone then the accompanying kernel source that will happen.

First off, thank you for being the first newb ever to correctly create a thread on XDA. Not only that, but in the correct place! I will actually take the time to answer your questions without being pissed off, lol.
We don't have ICS yet, but when you unlock your BL and root you might want to consider getting ADW Launcher or ADW EX. Others might recommend another launcher, but ADW has a tone of ICS options. We can remove bloat with the Clean Tool once you are rooted.

It seems I was unprepared for how new this phone is and the lack of information on how to optimize it for a US user. ALso cant install anything because the package installer crashes with everything. I have purchase protection on the phone for one more week, should I just return the phone? Or will their be ROM's available soon to replace FLyme? I like to learn technology is it possible for a novice to learn how to hack a phone and port an available ROM onto a Chinese phone? Or is this something extremely difficult and time consuming? Really just looking for some advice from the informed/ knowledgeable.

China devices are the worst to learn on as there is no kernel source for the device and moat avoid these devices. So you will have to take it on yourself if you want something. Yes it is time consuming and will have a learning curve.
Just got the phone and love it..
You should be able to update Flyme by finding 'upgrade' in your app drawer, but even after the upgrade its just a bit better.
The most current version is 4.0.3i
Not a big fan of Flyme ,I find it very buggy.
Im hoping for a cm rom of some sort. Would love to see something like the version on the onePlus .
LTE works with Rogers and Bell in Canada..
I like the phone as well I have tried the button in the panel to upgrade click it says android settings com has stopped, tried turning it off and upgrading from zip with zip stored in root directory, got nothing. Tried 4.0.3A ,4.0.3i, 4.03U also and everytime it says corrupted. My firmware version is 4.0.2 U . Tried lots of different ways to try and get google services on it and nothing happens. SOme apps from the app store installed like facebook and evernote. So kinda of feeling a little silly about purchasing this phone because the price vs hardware was spectacular. But I cant get everything I want to use on it. Looking for maybe some trouble shooting from experienced users or reassurance that i didnt just make a retarded mistake purchasing a phone i wont ever be able to use an i should just wait until developer community tackles these problems. Though dont know if that will matter if I can never update the thing. I am using windows 8 could could that be causing issues with upgrading my phone over the wire? Or should I try a .bin file ?

I hate to say it but your gonna be out of luck. Developers dont touch these devices. They seldom follow the GPL or have unlocked bootloaders and as they are mainly sold in China which doesnt have agreements set up with google in alot of places it is really a pain to get google services running. We have a forum for it but it has been long dead.

HOW can I block the download of LolliCrap 5.x so it's not sitting there taking up Memory space because I will never install it and how can I block all future Android OS updates??? I'd rather NOT Root if at all possible, I'm not sure I'm technically qualified to Root my N7's.

Without root, you can't block the updates. I'm using a custom 5.0 rom on my 2012 N7 and it's actually pretty snappy. I also changed the file system to F2FS and cranked up the GPU speeds though so that might have something to do with it. The Nexus stuff is one of the easiest things to root out there. I believe there are ways to do so without even unlocking the bootloader, which will require wiping the device completely. There are tool kits in the forum for your device that should help you do this with minimal effort.
Rooting is something I have not even attempted, can anyone recommend a tutorial, video and how to accomplish the rooting process on a N7 2012 for a newbie to rooting?? I've been in IT, but the hardware end, so I'm not tech challenged, just no experience on the SW Hacking side. I've got to get my N7 2012 32GB model blocked before it's devastated by 5.02 too!!
I'd also like to "Revert" my already "attacked" N7 8GB 2012 back to KitKat 4.4.4, is that possible? I've looked at Android OS DL's but which model name is the 2012 N7? "nakasi" or which??
Any help and suggestions from the experts on the forum appreciated.

This tool / thread will have everything you need. You can root and downgrade with it. The "manual" way is not difficult either. You were correct, it is the "nakasi" model. Just need the drivers installed, extract the folder from the download (use 7zip if you don't have an app on your PC already for those kinds of files), reboot to the bootloader screen (power off then power on by holding Vol Down and Power), plug into the PC and make sure the drivers load, then double click the flash-all.bat file in the folder and let it do it's thing.
Thanks.
Gentlemen,
Thanks for all the information and I will review the links you supplied and I will take a shot at Rooting my 2 N7 2012's to keep any nasty 5.0x updates off until Google comes to their senses! Serously, 8 days after Android 5.02 invaded my N7 8GB, it still runs like crap, balks, stalls, crashes, even Services crashes and stalls routinely. .... Google has made a mess of this version of Android OS 5.x, damn them. All just to serve their stupid "wearable" as I have read on several Android sites. Google is turning into CrApple.

I often find issues like that are caused from not resetting your device after OTAs. This kind of thing happens often enough between jumping OS versions, and is not just for the Nexus, but I've seen and read about it for every manufacturer, and even for Apple devices. There are plenty of people using Lollipop on the N7 without issues. Just every device is a bit different, even before you start adding your own apps and data.

I beg to greatly differ with your opinion regarding the number of Nexus owners (at least older models) having problems with Lollipop OS, along with owners of other brands of phones and tablets. While looking for reason for all the problems I've experienced and how to fix or revert back to KitKat 4.4.4 (because it worked flawlessly) and how to block further Lollicrap 5.0x updates, I've "Googled" and visited at least 30 of 40 different forums, blogs, postings and news reports that EVERYONE chastises, complains and hates Lollicrap 5.0x. Even Bloomberg News has runs a few news stories about why everyone hates Android 5.0x Lollipop and won;t use it. Several Tech writers have pointed out that the main purpose of Lollicrap 5.0x is to promote Google's android based "Wearable" and obviously from all the complaints by us, we've been sacrificed for their greed.
Sorry, If I got to wipe out all my app installs and start all over again with a "reset", I won't waste my time with Buggy and Kluged LolliCrAp 5.0x anything and these will be the last Google product I'll ever buy ..... they've become CrApple! All for the money of it and screw the previous model owners. My next new Tablet will be a Surface Pro.

Human nature - people are more likely to post complaining about things than complimenting them. Name an update on any device that you can't find people having issues with. Nature of the beast. But as I mentioned, the problems you are experiencing are very typical of issues with OTA updates and not factory resetting the device.

But you also have to take into account, that the vast majority of any device users, especially Smart Phones and Tablets, are not technologically "equipped" and DON'T B n C on-line and don't do postings looking for help, they just get pissed and move to another device or OS. So I postulate that all these hundreds of posts are an accurate reflection of the total percentage of people having issues with Android 5.0x and that since the tech media is taking note of it, it's the true nature of the problems. Sorry, my N7 2012 was pristine, ran perfectly under KitKat 4.4.4. If I'm having problems after and OTA update, so are the majority. It's just common sense and the odds.

So many leaps of logic, assumptions, and lack of understanding of how software updates work here, it's not even worth getting into. If you need help downgrading, I'd be more than happy to help though. You can hit me up on Hangouts @ my screen name if you'd like.
Apparently the 5.02 Lollicrap Update is down loaded to your N7 (maybe other devices as well) without your permission when connected online.
Where is it stored as a file, in what folder and can it be deleted, prior to Rooting the N7?
I'd like help with Rooting both of my N7's (2012's), returning one back to KitKat 4.4.4 and keeping the other 32GB 2012 N7 from ever being updated without my permission.
Thanks

It should be in the /cache folder, which you won't have access to without root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
Everything you need will be in that thread. As long as the drivers are loaded correctly and you have a good USB cable, the toolkit should be able to do everything else as far as rooting and downgrading. Once you are rooted, then I think you should be able to stop notifications/downloads of the updates by following this 1st post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2429820
and / or might need to do this too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53169162&postcount=21
Or install a custom rom.
I'm not so cool with "Leaps" of logic in your instructions that seem to contain a lot of "I think", "should be ale to", or "and / or might need to do this too", or "Or install a custom rom". I've never Rooted anything, this seems more like guess work than a proven method and I'm not about to sacrifice my working 32GB N7 with KitKat 4.4.4 "experimenting".
By this loose method you're advising, my logic in saying the majority of Android users are pissed (referenced dozens and dozens of forum sites) but most silent about LolliCrap screwing up their devices, is like the proven theory of relativity.
I'll keep looking for a forum thread by someone that has, with no "might have to", or "should's" in the process.
Thanks anyway.

Sorry for not being more clear.
The update zip IS in the /cache folder, which you won't have access to without root.
The toolkit on from the link I provided has nothing to do with guess work as it is the easiest way to downgrade and root and has everything you need from the drivers to the root files to being able to download the 4.4.4 firmware and flash for you with very minimal interaction. As far as the notifications go, some people get away with one method, some have to do both. If you would feel more comfortable with someone helping via TeamViewer, I'd be willing to. I literally do this kind of stuff as a job and have experience with every kind of flashing, modding, upgrades, downgrades, etc for 100s of devices, as well as owning the same tablet you have.
Thanks for the clarifications, I'll download the Toolkit and run it to familiarize myself with it. If it looks confusing to me, I'll take you up on the offer to help using TeamViewer. I've used TV a few times with my IT clients.
Do you know which cashe folder Android stores the updates in? And once rooted and updates blocked, can I just delete that 5.02 file (I'm think my other 2012 N7 32GB which has not been updated)??
It's just in the /cache folder in the root of the OS. Yes, you can delete it without issue, though it's not going to give you any more usable apace as it's a different partition of the device that the normal data you save doesn't have access to. Still, might as well delete it.

It's been a while and I still haven't Rooted my Nexus 7, been researching the mechanics of how to do it and what methods are available that a complete "rooting newbee" can use without getting over my head in quicksand and a bricked N7 (2012) instead of one taken back to Kitkat 4.4.4 from a screwed up buggy 5.02 OTA update.
I was looking at a tutorial for using " Wugfresh" tool and a comment was made that "Unlocking will wipe the device.". Is this true? Is this always the case when rooting and unlocking?
I don't want to "wipe" my N7, just root it and return it to 4.4.4.
I also read that the boot loader in the factory 4.4.4 is faulty and a lot of girations are needed to reinstall 4.4.4. Has anyone experienced this?
Appreciate the thoughts and ideas.

Literally just finished helping someone with downgrading back from LP because it wasn't working well for them either. You absolutely have to unlock the bootloader, which will wipe the device, no matter what you want to do - root / recovery / downgrade / etc. This is not an option as it is a security feature. There are so many ways to back up most of your stuff that it's really not THAT big of a deal. There are apps, Google, cloud storage, etc.
Yeah in doing my "research" on rooting to turn back the calendar to Kitkat 4.4.4 I've read more and more pretty pissed off N7 owners, seems to have hit the 2012 and 2013 model owners the most grievously.
Question then if I backup - since I'm on LP 5.02 on my 8GB N7 (2012) already, when I do a back up won't it also take with some of the LP oriented settings?
Is there a highly preferred BU method that will take everything from data, settings and apps so after I root and reinstall (flash?) 4.4.4 on a wiped N7 it puts everything back? Is there a BU method I can use to BU's to my PC, rather than a cloud? (I don't have a 8GB "cloud account with anyone)
Thanks very much.
