Getting back to MDK, best route? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Currently doing the run around with big red on how they locked out capabilities of this beautiful device. Between Samsung and VZW, they point the finger at each other. I'm on MI1 which I despise because I can't do proper development of apps on this being that I can't load other versions of roms. I see already that without JTAG and that, I just can't Odin this thing back to MDK or whatever version prior to them slapping the cuffs on. I have been on the phone with rep after rep through tier 2 support that has the know-how of your local pizza delivery driver with a spray painted flat black rice burner. Has anyone found luck who to talk to about getting the right version needed so I can unlock and do testing with JB and KK?

I don't know what you're asking. If there's a way to downgrade to MDK, nobody's talking.
This is a deliberate decision on both Verizon's and Samsung's part - VZ wants to stop the warranty fraud, Samsung wants to go after the corporate business that's currently mostly iPhone/iPad.
This is not going to get any better.

Best route is to purchase a dev phone or purchase one second hand online... That's the best route.

There is no current way to downgrade from any other build to MDK. Once you update, you are stuck with that build.

I saw that there is no way to downgrade.
Essentially I'm trying to figure out if anyone was successful talking to VZW or Samsung on maybe getting a MDK or ME7 version swapped out. Thus far neither are talking. I got someone in tier 3 support that sounded like they understood what I was after. I was told they will call me tomorrow... crossing fingers, but not expecting much.

Ah, you might can get one swapped out via warrantee replacement, of course if it meets the criteria.. My last warrantee replacement came with me7. I'm doubtful there is any mdk in Stock

How long ago was that?

Verizon is not allowing MDK phones out the door. The old stock is depleted.
You may be lucky enough to get an ME7 or MI1 phone that you can root, but no chance for MDK.

Rooted MI1 right now, got SS on it but yet to fine a rom I can get to work.

A month ago back in mid September.

Anyone ACTUALLY Warrantied an Unlocked/Re-Locked?

If anyone out there in XDA-land has actually warrantied an unlocked or re-locked phone (in store and/or via the 1-800 number), could you please chime in and post your experience (whether you did store or 800 and what happened).
I realize that it may still be too early to ask this question, because the true kicker is whether someone down the supply chain (in store, then in Verizon, then in HTC) noticed and charged back to your account; as there may not have been enough time for bills to generate after such a chain, but I would love to hear of actual experiences.
If possible, there is no need to report back on Amazon or Best Buy or Guy-On-The-Corner They have different policies. This is a Verizon Corporate inquiry. If anyone sent it back to Verizon, did Verizon ultimately charge you for a new Rezound. Thanks
(I realize there is another thread debating whether or not HTC shares with Verizon, and whether Verizon employees are trained to check. This is not that hypothetical inquiry; I am hoping that only people who ACTUALLY did the swap report in).
Thanks!
This is interesting to me. I'm stuck wanting the "normal", for lack of better words, root and s-off method from the community. I knew that the employees don't care about root as long as they can set it back to stock. That's what I heard from my friend that worked there. I don't know about the HTC unlock though.
I did it with my first rezound. (i baught them at bestbuy for their replacement plan) no questions asked. GIVE ME NEW PHONE, they gave, I was happy.
not that this helps right now, but i should be able to give you an idea in a few days. bought my rezound on the 9th and unlocked and flashed that night, data started not connecting at all on the 13th. called vzw tech support on the 17th telling them what was going on, no mention of whether it was unlocked from either side, got my warranty replacement today. gonna send back the old phone tomorrow.
I had the 'can't charge dead batteries issue' the other night. Went to store and replaced with new battery. No problems.

Well - You did come closest to answering out of all the other responses PLEASE let us know if you ever get billed for it (which can take months).
When I turned my Charge in to Best Buy for the upgrade plan, the dude actually SHOWED OFF to the other folks how modded that thing was, he was in awe. As much flashing I did on that thing, it should have melted. They don't care, or are not paid enough TO care. Never had a problem at the VZW store either, but those guys are usually idiots anyways.
Local best buy for me looked for a superuser app, didn't see it, then exchanged the phone. Had they looked at the bootloader they would have seen the relocked. Bunch of idiots...lol.

While Best Buy is not relevant (they probably have their own policies), that is kind of disturbing. It means they are looking.
Anyone actually do this with *VERIZON*, would love to hear if they ultimately charge you.
I know this is not exactly the same, but I exchanged my old Samsung Fascinate for a Droid Charge under warranty through Verizon. I restored the Fascinate but forgot to restore the kernel. It showed some hacked version under the system settings and was really obvious.
I sent it back and never heard anything about it...
i'm curious, if they do charge wouldn't that mean they should send me the phone that was broken back since in theory i would have purchased the second phone at full price?

YES! That is why I was hoping to hear of people's actual responses with Verizon. Not having much luck with the "actual" or "verizon" part of the inquiry, but it is probably still too early to really know. The phone hasn't been unlocked long enough for people to unlock, decide they need to warranty replace, exchange it with VERIZON, and then get another bill cycle or 2 or 3 to see if they were charged.
... but I keep hoping to hear from anyone who actually warrantied an unlocked phone back to a Verizon corporate store or Verizon 800. As time goes by, maybe we will learn
doh! not exactly what i wanted to hear to start my friday morning.

Please do. I suspect it will take months (has to get from Verizon store to headquarters as part of however often they ship, then Verizon has to batch all their warranty replacements back to HTC {if that's how they do it} however often they ship, then HTC has to notice {if they ever do} and push back {if they ever do}, and the Verizon has take the pushback and bill). I suspect that this can take months, at which point the question will be moot (because it will be as it will be), but it was a pipe dream of mine to see what actually happens, given the amount of guessing going on.
Good luck!
I don't see from a legal standpoint how they can do anything...soon as the phone is in their possession they are taking responsibility for it no? Therefore if it is not covered by HTC for some reason, it would be there fault.

There was a ridiculous number of acknowledgment clicks re voided warranty through the unlock process. I would consider this situation exactly like if you brought a phone to Verizon saying it won't work, and the somewhere down the line someone finds the water sensor tripped. The dude behind the counter at Verizon is not going to know at the time, but as the phone winds its way through the warranty replacement chain, someone will figure it out; and they probably will charge you for your replacement.
No one would be screaming 'illegal' in that case; and I believe the cases are identical.
Please note - I hope this is not the case; I have not unlocked my phone (despite desperately wanting to run Nils' ROM) because I dont have $650 to start again. BUT, I can easily see the parallel here.

I don't know how to feel about that either. When an employee of a cellphone provider looks at the available water marks and SAYS your phone is fine and has not received water damage and they are going to replace it for you...anything found afterwords is Verizon's own fault and they will have to deal with. I actually had apple try and pull that once. Had am iPhone where the wifi card was bad, tech at apple looked at their two water markers and said it was fine, that there was a definite issue and shed replace it. Got a call from apple saying the water marker was tripped and I'd have to pay for the replacement. I told them exactly what happened and they left me alone real quick.

... and there you go. That is the heart of my inquiry.
The initial person (counter at the store) will be irrelevant, and if people turn in Re-Locked phones, will they ultimately get charged by Verizon EXACTLY the way Apple proceeded with you.

warranty exchange?

Hi all,
My Rezound has a problem with the microphone where no one can hear me unless I use my bluetooth. Ive dealt with it a while but now it's just frustrating to have to yell at my phone.
I want to call verizon and get a warranty exchange...either for a rezound or a different phone, but my phone is rooted. It is NOT SOFF, and has Nils Business Sense on it.
When I called verizon they said I needed to be off the phone so they could do some "damage checks" to the phone. I assume that means they'll check to see what rom/firmware it is running.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to successfully warranty exchange...I've read on here of several people returning SEVERAL rooted rezounds with issues...I'm just trying to figure out what the secret is before I return mine.
Thanks for any help you can give!
Tell them it died? Airplane mode? They won't check it once you send it in. There is another recent thread about this here somewhere...
You can send it back without problems. Once I sent back a rooted CM9 GNex and I never got billed

I've been told by several VZ employees I know that they dont care if its rooted or not as long as it can be flashed back to stock. They check it for physical/water damage, plug it in and flash most current software. Refurb and send it out. Done deal.

Retail Buy: Dev Edition vs VZW Direct?

I'm buying a phone for the wife to replace an aging and dying Droid X. Will be purchasing at full retail to keep my current Nationwide 450 with Unlimited Data plan.
Having trouble deciding whether to purchase the 16GB Developer Edition from Samsung ($650) or purchase the 32GB from Verizon for only $50 more ($700). Also, since this is off contract, is it even worthwhile to consider purchasing the 16GB from Verizon for the warranty?
I'm going to want to tether so I suppose I'll need root access. Wife has not yet needed a SD card but with the limited storage on the 16GB I'm going to have to install one. With 32GB I don't think I'll need to purchase a memory card.
I would appreciate your opinions! What's the best investment when purchasing at full retail?
If I were you I would go with the dev edition. The only compelling reason to buy from VZW would be if you 'must have' their insurance. If you buy from Samsung, you can still get Square Trade and save yourself a bunch of money in the long run. The main difference is Verizon covers loss/theft.
Anyway, in practice there won't be a whole lot of difference unless the Verizon version gets locked down with an OTA at some point.

The Dev edition just went on sale, so even if people have gotten their units there can't be much experience to draw from yet. That is also something to consider, there will be very few people with the dev edition compared to the Verizon version. If that concerns you, then it could be the deciding factor for you.

Understood! I just got my Dev Edition today and root failed based on that method posted. I only ran Motochopper and though it said it was successful and installed SuperSu, it could not install binary.
There must be another method.
Now, if I did the full method by exchanging the kernels, wouldn't that really give me a locked bootloader instead of the unlocked bootloader?
Any and all advice is appreciated.
My phone states:
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-562219 dated May 15th
Build Number: JDQ439.I545OYUAMDK
Baseband: I545OYUAMDK
Google Wallet
Does the developer edition have Google Wallet enabled?
I can tell you how to upgrade a line and keep unlimited data. I just got the S4 on VZW and still have unlimited data.
I'd get the dev edition as you could still install tw roms. Theres no sense not to get the dev if paying full price.

S4's in store pre-updated?

I have been using moto phones for a really long time, but with the release of the new moto phone specs today I am now contemplating other options as I cant imagine spending flagship model $$ on what I see as a midrange device(720p, dual core). I am not buying the whole "its an 8 core" bs they are trying to spin. I see it becoming a mess when it comes to anything other than the stock rom, with its special processor cores that support features I do not care about anyways. Not to mention there is no SD card slot.
The s4 is the only other phone I have considered. I am not up for a "free" upgrade until September but I am willing to shell out the $30 for early upgrade NOW if I can still get an s4 that I can root/loki. I am hoping someone who has gone into a VZW store in the last couple of days and picked up an S4 can chime in and fill me in. Was the phone already updated? did the rep update it? (I would have kicked him/her in their nose.. j/k.. or am I? =P) or was it on the rootable firmware when they handed it to you? thanks ahead of time for any input.
I Just want a flagship phone with a 5" FULL HD display, quad core, has 2gigs of ram and an SD card slot that can run AOKP... the S4 is the only phone on VZW that offers exactly that.
I got mine a week ago and it wasn't updated. Another member posted theirs was shipped on the 18th and wasn't updated. Time isn't on your side. You should go in ASAP and try to get one.

Boy! Then doing a device only switch to my line that is still an unlimited plan. Oh well... work the system.

that sucks.. You can return the phone within 14 days (maybe 30?). Assuming you have your old phone just return the s4 and reactivate the old phone.. then go back a few days later and redo the upgrade.. or drive to the next closest vzw store and redo the upgrade.

ooh. I didn't think about that. I would do it and just count it as a $35 lesson.. NEVER take an OTA update.. like NEVER. Until it has been verified to be ok. Which usually doesn't take but a couple of hours if that for someone to verify its safety. Or you can wait and hope another solution will come. But being on a droid bionic now I can say that it may never come. Sure we have safestrap but we never got anything as nice as the loki exploit which is really the next best thing to a fully unlocked bootloader. As I was told.. time is not on your side when it comes to being able to get a pre update S4.

(Q) - CLNRs from Verizon tech support on MDK or ME7?

Hey guys, so i've been having problems with my S4. No matter what I do my sensors malfunction and my NFC doesn't work. I've tried everything, different roms, factory images, nothing fixes it, so i called tech support today to see what I can do. They offered to send me a Certified like new replacement device via overnight Shipping. I played dumb and asked the technician if it will come with "the new update" that the local Verizon store warned me against. He said that it would, but it shouldn't have any problems. I'm not sure if he knew what he was talking about though. Or maybe he meant that it will take the update.
My question is: Has anyone received a CLNR from Verizon lately (like within the last week) and was it on MDK or ME7? I've decided that if it's on ME7 I'm gonna send it back. I'll tell them that I was able to fix my original device or something. It's not gonna be here til Friday and I'm kinda worried about this.
Anybody have any experience with this lately?
I'll tell you right now it's going to be ME7, your chances of getting MDK are closer to zero than anything. Update has been out for a while if you think about it and from past experience Verizon ensures it is pushed to a device before sending it out.

I wonder if there is a way to request it be MDK. Or cancel my replacement.
Only way to cancel is if it has not shipped, wait till you get the replacement and then call and tell them you are sending it back because your phone is fine now and there is no need for the replacement

Mine I got today was mdk...however I went to the store to request and the rep looked in the system and ordered it for me.
My CLNR one came in today and it was on ME7 sadly
sounds about 50/50.....good luck
i received a replacement on wednesday of last week it was MDK.
So just in case anyone is curious and find themselves in a similar situation. I had some hardware problems with my S4 (NFC did NOT work, and my sensors were very very inaccurate), So i called Verizon technical support to see if my phone was still under warranty. I must say that I was very very worried about getting a device with ME7 on it (obviously since I made this thread about it). I have to have my custom Roms hehe.
So when I got them on the phone, first thing they did was what they always do, and seem to think it will solve a hardware issue is make you do a factory reset. I told him I already did ( which wasn't untrue since I had just flashed Beans 6 hehe) and he said he needed to verify that I did. He had me go into settings/data usage. He asked me what they dates it displayed for my data usage cycle were. I said only back to August 22nd. And he said okay thats good. So as an interesting little side note, if you find yourself in a similar situation, that is how they verify you did a factory reset or not. It will store all your data usage statistics all the way back to the last time you did a factory reset. Just an interesting little bit of info.
After that, he was more than happy to send me out a Certified Like New Replacement Via overnight shipping. Before getting off the phone I asked the technician if the device would come with the newest software update on it already. (I played dumb and said that they guys at the local store told me it was no good), he said that, "Yes it will have the newest update pre-installed, but don't worry about it, I have it on my device and it runs solid".
So needless to say I spent the last day and a half worried as heck that it would come with ME7 pre-installed. I had resolved myself to cancel the replacement and just deal with a defective device if it did come with ME7.
But lucky me! Today, I got my CLNR device and it still had MDK on it! Freaking awesome. I thought for sure all their devices would be on ME7 by now.
Anyways, the point of my long winded post is this: Verizon still does have replacement devices (not brand new devices in the store) that are on MDK. So if anyone is having a similar issue. There is still hope!
Sorry for the long post. Just super happy about.

Yeah I was just really surprised. Everyone said it would be ME7 for sure, even the technician I talked to, who seemed pretty knowledgeable said it would be updated with the newest ME7 build. He said it by name too. I just hoped he would be misinformed like they usually are. I wasn't very hopeful. Almost jumped for joy when I booted it and saw MDK. I didn't even put the SIM card in it until I had already rooted and installed recovery,
Placed order today. Will be here tomorrow for 'overheating' hope I get mdk the first time. You can request as many replacements as possible until you're happy. Any rep will say. I'm hoping mdk or downgrade to note 2 offer.

It looks like you will probably get an MDK device. Hopefully anyways. It's not like they can go through and turn on every single one of their CLNR devices and update them. You are right though, I've noticed now that after three consecutive times getting a replacement device for one that is malfunctioning, Verizon will offer you an early upgrade. It's happened to me twice now. Three times, then new phone for you. Think about it, they only win that way. Yeah your getting a new device, but they have your wallet for another two years. It's like their unspoken policy.
Say what you want about Big Red, but they have excellent customer service. That's why I have stayed with them for so long. Every time I have had an issue they have always resolved it for me quickly and efficiently. I mean, they even sent their replacements out via overnight shipping. Very cool. They even make payment arrangements with me whenever I'm having a rough month.
Anyways, you should post here when it arrives tomorrow and let us know whether or not it's MDK.
Got a mdk today. New not refurb too!

Also got an MDK from Asurion today. It's in the original box with all accessories = assuming it's new.
Mine wasn't in original box with accessories but it wasn't a refurb either. The back had a blue sticker was like nb 7/31 donno what that is. But I pealed it off. It was a little blue circle.
Either way. The regular imei and Samsung made in China stuff matched the original and wasn't a refurbished device.seems good!

I didn't have any stickers or dates on mine. The UPC under proof of purchase was blacked out with a sharpie though.
Did you get your phone from asurion or Verizon. Did you lose or damage. Cuz warranty swaps are Verizon.
