Not registered on network, EFS restore didnt help. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Fixed it by flashing a previously backed up Ariza-patched modem.
BACKUP YOUR MODEM!!!
Original Post
I've been getting "Not registered on network" even though my EFS backup properly restored.
I went from CM 10.1.3 with xxufme7 modem and azira patch to I9300XXEMH4 4.1.2.
As expected, I got the Not Registered on Network. So I Rooted my phone and intalled the apk for Azira patch but that didnt help.
So i restored the Nandrod backup of CM but I still get the Not registered on network error. I restored the efs but that didnt help. Azira patch wont download for some reason.
I looked around the forums all day. I got really confused, so i decided to post a thread.
What do I do?

To my knowledge Ariza won't work on v2 efs, which is what you updated to when you flashed EMH. If your efs backup was made BEFORE you flashed EMHNan , then you should be able to format efs and restore it. A normal Nandroid doesn't backup efs.
Go read general, stickies efs 'know this stuff' thread.

You read the stickied EFS/IMEI guide .
But has you have messed with wrong stuff stop flashing and pay for a service repair .

Ariza isnt downloading at all. Maybe the server's down or smth.
I did restore the EFS and its backup was done while in the ME7 firmware. I restored that. Nothing happened. No network. But I did get my IMEI back <Thank god>
Also, I have no idea what my country code is supposed to be, (I bought it second hand and the bottom sticker was torn out) so I am probably flashing a wrong firmware onto my phone. Anyway to tell which one I should download?
But, after ****ting my pants all day, I realised that I had backed up my Ariza patched modem from Philz recovery a while ago. So I restored my cyanogenmod backup, restored the EFS, and then restored the modem. Problem solved.
But I would love to have a pure stock phone without any patches though. I really want to flash the correct firmware onto my phone and I'd really appreciate any help on that topic.
Thanks for the info.

Having a bad day?

If you've flashed ariza patch then there is no way back to full stock without the original and unmodified efs folder.

I thought Ariza patch didnt touch the efs folder.
Also, is the EFS folder responsible for the "Not registered on network issue" or is it because of the modem? I've never quite understood that despite of all the stickies. because when I got my phone it had a 4.1.2 firmware on it, I updated it to ME7 4.2.2 and got the Network issue. I doubt anything happened to the EFS folder at that moment.

All those questions and more are answered in the thread I mentioned.

haha, Alright, I look throught it again.
Thanks for everything.

As OP's question is solved, further conversation can be carried on the dedicate threads.

Weird no registered network error

Hi all. I rooted my phone couple of weeks ago and I didn't like the rom that I flashed and I decided the unroot my phone. So today I tried to unroot my phone and applied triangle away solution. Everything went perfect. I flashed a stock rom, I unrooted my phone successfully. Since this I have no connection at all. No 2g, no 3g. I've done some research on the Internet but couldn't find a proper answer. The phone shows the imei number but it doesn't match with the number under the battery. What should I do?

As per the faqs and guides restore your backed up EFS folder .
Not read the basics and no EFS backup then its a paid for service repair.
jje
I have no efs back up. I rooted my other phone million times but I've never backed it up. So jje you basically mean there is no exact solution for the issue. I need to send my phone to the service?
If you flashed a custom rom it may have a EFS backup look for EFSbackup.tar on your phone .
Looked for it but there is nothing. I've sent a PM one of the XDA users who is an expert with IMEI. I'm waiting for his answer. If he can't fix it I'll visit a Samsung repair centre. The phone is now out of warranty, isn't it? How much they are gonna charge me roughly?
did you try to flash an emg2 or emg4 baseband? some have reported that this can restore network connection

You are amazing mate. Your suggestion fixed the problem. I now have 2G, 3G connection on my phone. Thank you so much.
make sure that going forward if you flash any other baseband or rom that includes a baseband as all stock roms do and also some custom roms as well, that you flash one that is newer than what you have now. the older basebands can no longer read the efs folder because beginning with emg4 the efs folder is modified so older radios will not work properly. back up your efs folder because it may get corrupted. if that happens than only a backup can restore your network connection, this time you got lucky it was not corrupted yet. the format changed but the info was intact. please read the stickies all the answers are there.

Dear Ashraf sharif,
My sgs3 gt i9300 currently has baseband version I9300 DDEMG2 and bulid number JZ054K.I9300XXEMG5.
I had flashed resurrection remix rom and i got my IMEI changed and baseband version unknown then i restored everything back with a lot of help form rootsu, now my issues are:-
which all baseband i can flash or which roms are suited for this ie what should i look for in a rom while flashing as far as baseband and not ****ing up my imei is concerned?
and does that means in addition to flashing a custom rom i need to flash a baseband also as you mentioned that few custom roms have baseband ie all doesn't have basebands???
thanks in advance.......
I am no expert on this issue as I have not experienced it myself. With that being said , it is my understanding that once a g series modem or baseband is used reverting to an older baseband will result in no network. Read the thread in general called " attention 19300xxemg4 changes efs folder". some firmwares do not touch the baseband only affecting system+ kernel+ recovery.
Since you are on mg2 baseband it is probably safest for you to stick with it because it works . If you do decide to change it make sure you flash a baseband that is either the same or newer. Also make sure csc code is correct for your region.
Make several backups of your efs and save to external sd and computer and flashdrive. Read the stickies .
wait and see before flashing . Read reviews for newly released firmwares. This is how I avoided this relatively new issue with efs imei . I simply read the thread "attention 1900xxemg4 changes efs folder.

4.2.2 EFS Problem

Hi
I know there is plenty of threads but i still dont know what to do (my english not so good)
So my history begins with stock I9300XXELLA i think - i rooted it and flashed some other roms later, few days ago i decided to try this 4.2.2 leak and i flashed fantasy rom. It asked me if i want to do backup of my efs so i did. Later it asked me about new modem i think, i agreed too. After installing this rom i found i cant connect to my network and my imei is generic (000499). I tried to restore my efs backup with ktool but it only got me to factory mode opening (ktool saw efs backup but couldnt find nv_data.bin there - its there i checked). Next thing i did was flashing stock rom
I9300XXELLA by ODIN and trying to restore efs again this time with Samsung I9300 EFS Backup. It said its complete but i still have no network and my imei is still generic. What should i do? I heard about 3 file rom but i dont know which to flash. Sorry for another thread about this but its my last hope.
PS. My efs backup looks like this EFS.tar.gz--->EFS(folder)-->files
Looks like efs restore didn't go right. Flash stock 4.1.2 , stock basebsnd again and try restoring it.
sent from the state where marijuanated muffins are NOT illegal !
I think my backup is wrong bcoz when i entered efs folder i had files in it and another /efs folder which had same files inside
Start at the beginning or simply take the phone to a service centre .
Basics read first.

Ok i managed it, i flashed 4.2.2 with older modem than my 4.1.2 so i "downgraded" modem. This older one had different efs partition so i had to do was flashing XXEMG4 modem back : ) Thank you for replies

[Q] Unable to connect to network despite correct IMEI and serial number?

Hello All.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 international (GT-I9300 - OS 4.0.4 - I9300DXLE8 baseband) I applied a ROM update (4.2.1) and lost signal. I then flashed again using various ROMS but nothing. I did some research about the EFS folder and using the XXEMG4 modem binary to get the IMEI number back from the generic one but now I cannot connect to any of the mobile carriers that are found. I have to admit, before I discovered the XXEMG4 issue (from a thread here) I did (mistakenly) look in to the EFS folder and I confess I most likely have messed that up and that may be the reason I cannot get a signal any further even though I can get the correct IMEI?
Is there anything I can do which would not involve sending the phone to Samsung? Flashing the stock ROM did not fix it and now, I have found, regardless of what ROM I flash, I must also flash the XXEMG4 modem as well otherwise I just get a generic IMEI number. I blame myself and my own stupidity for not reading more about the EFS system first (and not making a backup either) so I just wanted clarification that there is nothing more I can do.
To summarise:
Updated ROM and lost IMEI (generic)
Did not back up EFS folder
Flashed various ROMS - no service & generic IMEI
Flashed ROM with XXEMG4 modem
Phone IMEI is correct but still no service - emergency calls only
Ariza patch did nothing, factory reset does nothing, stock ROM does nothing.
Many thanks for your time.
Install the patched mg4 modem and all should be fixed
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Start from beginning flash leaked firmware via odin from sammobile
Then root by cfroot
Install recovery and then flash custom recovery..
Also if u do have a backup of stock with working imei then u cn restore that if u dnt want to do the odin procedure..
Thanks for the replies but I seem to have fixed it.
I restored back to stock ROM, restored EFS Backup using KTools and restarted the phone and all is well.
I am now backing the phone up completely using EFS Pro.
Many thanks.
If you've corrupted files in the efs folder then no, there is nothing you can do yourself. The repair should not be too expensive as no hardware needed replacing.
Edit. You wrote 'didn't backup efs', but now say you've solved it by restoring your backup -which is the whole point of taking a backup before you flash anything.

EFS - if didnt backup, and solution?

hi
A general question:
If I flashed a new rom and my IMEI got 0000000 or some other corrupted EFS issue, and I didnt backed up the EFS - is it fixable?
(Lets say that flashing stock roms did not fix the issue).
I want to unsderstand if EFS backup is that important?
tnx!

I hope these are hypothetical questions and that it hasn't happened to you already
EFS backup is the most important thing you should do first before you even think of flashing a new rom. It can avoid a lot of pain and help you to save some money because you do not have to send it to repair.
for more informations please read the stickies in general section, in your case espacially http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289 everything is documented there.

Fixable by Samsung, yes and you'd have to pay. Cheaper repair shops usually botch it.
Get ready to pay £50+ to get it fixed... Or just smash your phone and claim warranty..

Hello,
just new here in writing but read a lot, so i might have seen some posts that could help you (I've backed up everything but never had to restore EFS, so everything is theoretically).
The first step I would do - even if everything seems lost - make a full backup!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206898 (Search for "Recoveries". If You played with KitKat - you should use a newer Recovery not from this site, but then you still know that).
Helping for your Problem this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021 (You should have a sticker somewhere - under tha battery - with the original IMEI)
Maybe if this didn't helped - this can be a try for you:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2392632
Just have seen this - but haven't tested yet.

But the link from Darkened_Sky is also very important to read (thanks, just read it now).
Good luck - :good:

[Q] HELP to back old IMEI

Please, I need help, my motherboard burned and bought a new one with no IMEI, after the technician installed the motherboard, it got generic IMEI "0049 ..." Before the burn motherboard, I had made a backup of the ROM "4.0.4" using CWM, and made a copy of the folder EFS "efs.img/efs.tar.gz" using KTOOL, not sure about KTOOL because was this in 2012^^, but I've tried everything I know, I have tried to restore using the KTOOL, already restored the backup using CWM, already flash ROM "4.1.2/4.3" via ODIN, I have done several reported here in some posts related about IMEI but it still fails, hope some enlightened can help me :/ sorry for my bad english
Model: GT-I9300
Actual ROM: 4.0.4

error of the technician, the imei is stored in the nand chip(comes with the mobo)and he should had flashed correctly it for you
now since you made a ktool backup(dont know what it is, but looks like a imei backup) and if this ktool is designed for the s3(so it backups all efs partitions, if i remember there are 3, can be wrong tho) you*should* could restore.
but there is a problem,if ktool is correct but its from 2012 that means it did a backup of the old style efs partiton (efsv1) witch dosent work anymore since Samsung upgraded it to efsv2 and downgrading will not help
what you should do is get a s3 with 4.1.2 or earlier and restore your efs to that, upgrade it to 4.3, and get a new efs backup
i could be wrong tho
Edit: i remember a thread about a guy fixing the imei issue without a backup, and i remember Reading a part where he formats the efs partition, so that should help, see if you can find it(i can´t look now). it was in the s3 forums
You cannot restore an efs backup to another handset or motherboard, it's also illegal to change the imei and discussion of this is banned on xda.
Your new motherboard is faulty, return it to the technician.

really? excuse me is that I see many people talking about it here and have never seen any warning from the moderators, I thought it was legal because everyone says that the IMEI does not change, even changing the motherboard. And I have the invoice from the phone, just did not want to take the support of samsung because they charge too much.
Backing up and restoring efs to same motherboard/handset is legal, trying to move the imei from your old motherboard to new is illegal for you to do.
