Concern over developer support. - HTC One Max

So I went to the Verizon store today, and had a hands on with both the G2, and the HTC One Max. I really like both, and the size of the max isn't as much of a problem as I thought it'd be. However, the G2 has MUCH more xda support than the max does. Do you think the Max will eventually get more support, or is this something you have to deal with if you buy this phone?

Rememeber in the states only the cdma versions (sprint, verizon) have been released and the verizon hasnt been publicly soff' or rooted (very soon!). Once the gsm models are released you will likely see more dev.
Whats good about the one max is it appears all the models are pretty standard across the board AND all have the same specs as the original One. It *appears* a lot of the original One stuff can be reused or at a minimum easily tweaked to use.
Also with Xposed modules being so available and working across most devices and roms you should be able to tweak for yourself what a lot of what custom roms provide

One more thing, this is kind of off topic but there is no need for a separate thread. How had the snapdragon 600 been compared to other flagships? I know I'm not the first to ask, but I want to hear it from an owner.

Snapdragon 600 is a highly balanced processor. There is a great balance between performance and battery usage.
What is that you are looking from a Snapdragon 800?

I've seen the phone stutter a bit compared to other phones playing games like asphalt 8, but other than that, the 800 is supposed to be more power efficient. Its not a deal breaker, the only possible deal breaker is the lack of xda support. I know this phone just came out, but I hope it really gains some traction among the development community.

I had planned to pick up the phone at launch, but our black Friday/holiday budget keeps growing=-O if I have any money left I'll probably get it

Snap 800 is just a quad core with a higher clock speed with 'active' listening or whatever it's called. IMO the snap 600 can push everything it has to quite easily on this phone. Samsung has all the tw stuff that bogs down a system. I'm coming from a S4 and Note2.

All we need is a custom kernel, which flyhalf does a good job with aosp kernels, nitsuj is part of team venom, so we might see viper one max rom(hope so). And beaups did a kernel for the dna that fixed color issues. Zarboz might even provide us with some beast mode kernel. We have some great devs already with us, some i havent named because theres too many.

I do agree that the phone stutters little specifically where compared to the one. I am guessing this is becuase of the phone storage. AnandTech's review noted that the read and write speeds are little slow compared to the one and not to forget this is a gb storage. Last year's Nexus 7 comparison between 8, 16 and 32 gb noted higher the storage higher the performance.
This is the first version of the software and I expect HTC to improve over the time. Leaked kit kat rom's show significant improvements in performance and battery life for the one which I expect to be inherited to the Max.
S800 battery seems to be a pretty confusing from what I know. The facts say that it is supposed to be performing better at the same voltages however i realtime specifically gaming, it seems to be draining lot faster than the s600. It also heats up very fast compared to s600 which is another cause of battery draining. If I know correctly S800 is a very hot chip and has not been tamed to achieve thermal balance.
I agree on the dev support point, we need more devs. Thanks for all those devs who have plans for the max.

I've just picked up a GSM Telstra HTC One Max so if you want a GSM tester, I've been flashing custom ROMs since my HTC Magician.

I was wondering wether to get Htc one max or Nokia lumia 1520. Owned Htc one which I really liked but Htc one max is slight downgrade in some ways camera and side bezel. In other ways an improvement. I don't think custom roms will kick off for this phone at all which is a bit of a shame as it could do with 4.4 ASAP.
4.4 is the most smoothest ever android experience especially on the nexus 5, real improvements.
What do you think is it worth getting Htc one max?

It's coming together...

The side bezel is definitely not a downgrade, as it protects your phone. The Original One had chamfered edges which easily developed dents and scratches. i would not say the camera is a downgrade.. i tried a little test between the one and the MAX and did not see much difference in the photos on the phones.
Custom ROM support on this phone is quite easy as the hardware between HTC One and MAX are almost the same.. same applies for the AOSP rom's as well. we will have AOSP rom's once kernel sources are available. MAX will get 4.4 by end of December, you should not be worried about software support, HTC has proved it this year with the One, they are almost the almost the the first ones to roll out 4.4. HTC One had kitkat even before Nexus 4.
if you really liked the HTC one, you cannot go wrong with MAX as it 95% the same phone

Who else is dying for AOSP?

It's not really a port since he's building from source.

Your wrong, we DO have CM10 and thanks to KushDeck our CM10 is more stable than Most of the officially supported CM10 roms. Derailing it just cuz it only has a few bugs isn't good and tbh is pretty disrespectful, hell even without Image Sense it still takes good pics so I don't see that as an issue either.

Haha, ok.
I was in no way disrespectful. I didn't derail anything.
Is it bugfree? Nope. Just a fact, not disrespectful. These things take time. You acknowledge is has bugs, so did I...are we both "disrespectful"? Calm down.
Also. Imagesense is awesome. You don't see an issue without it and thats fine, that is your opinion and not the end all be all. AOSP may never get this feature. Is it a big deal? Not really, there is always going to be some trade offs. Some of us will miss it, no disrespect there.
Also, is it even released to the masses? Nope. You have to dig to find the latest build. So we don't really "have" anything. That doesn't mean they aren't working hard on it and throwing out some really good builds...just means it isn't ready yet.

unofficial CM10 nightlies
Not everyone knows they there are nightlies on IRC, we keep looking in the Orignal Rom section looking for updates.
I mean no disprespect but unless you find the nightlies there seems to be no action going on. I was totally unaware of Decks "Unofficial CM10" until the other day and then they shut my thread down when I meant no disprespect . Maybe there can be a little more clarity to help some of us with less experience find some of the test roms..
I don't get what the big deal is, AOSP is awesome, but Sense is just as good, the difference is mostly visual, we'll get 4.1 soon enough

To explain... Most of why people choose AOSP over Sense is definitely NOT for the visuals. Before ICS especially, vanilla android was always considered ugly, but the functionality of the AOSP ROMs was worth the ugliness. Now since ICS, I can't even say that. Now I find AOSP ROMs to be nicer looking AND more functional. I have found better battery life, much more memory, more tweaks, smoother performance, actual multi-tasking, and probably 10 other things I can't think of right now.

Well, sense is not exactly bad, but it's slow compared to cm10, drains the battery faster, and you get a lot of unnecessary stuff from sprint and htc that you don't need (bloatware). Just think of this: htc sense is about 600-700 megs, while CM10 is about 150 megs. That's how much bloatware htc and sprint add to this phone. Also, IMHO, aosp is much better looking and elegant as well (tron-ish blue on black background).
Again, HTC Sense is not bad, but it's deffinitely not better than AOSP, but I can see how Sense is more than enough for some.

I completely agree with you regarding the camera. I bought the phone after having the OG Evo for 2 years and while I'm extremely happy I can't help but notice certain camera quality issues.
Are they enough to make me hate the phone? Definitely not so let's hope maybe a software update will do the trick!

Does this solve our issues? If so, why wouldn't the chefs here cook this into all custom roms? Do the chefs just not know about this or do they leave it out of their roms due to compatibility reasons? Just flash via recovery this mod and all is good? Hate to screw up my WCX Rom installing this then have to fresh install the Rom again to fix issues.

I wouldn't get my hopes up about us seeing it too quickly. VZW doesn't have the best track record of getting updates to their phones quickly.
Basically x70xchallengerx got it, support our devs and hope they get it. The likeliness of this phone getting another android update is 50/50, and an update after that is probably zero.
I like this phone, I just prefer to keep my expectations real.

Well said. It seems like updates are only realistic if you have a Nexus phone, somewhat probable if you have a manufacturer's legacy device (such as an S-line phone from Samsung), and almost doubtful if you have anything else (unless you think waiting around for 6+ months longer than everyone else doesn't count as doubtful). VZW does seem to be one of the slower carriers when it comes to releasing the updates from what I've read over the past couple of years on these Android phones & sites.
This isn't a new android version though. Being updated with a new UI by the manufacturer is going to be a bit different than a full android update.. One less step for it to pass through, so I would hope we might see it sooner rather than later.. Not quite sure what kind of tweaks Verizon would even need to make to a UI, aside from functionality/compatability issues maybe..

Exactly, plus there's not much "porting" to do, because the DNA is mostly the same hardware as the M7 .. I can't imagine it would be harder than putting Sense 4 on the Rezound... which was done

It won't be hard to do once we get a publicly released RUU from the m7
Functionality depends a lot on if its android 4.1.2 or 4.2.1 though for now
Of course ideally the DNA just gets updated to sense 5 on its own lol

Seat tight on a update from Verizon to sense 5 ..that would never happens. Custom roms would be the only option for Verizon DNA

Htc ONE Google edition?

After Sammy announced the S4 is coming out with the "vanilla" experience, the rumor mill started going crazy expecting htc to do the same, specially after one of their execs teweeted "wait".
Those rumors where quickly scuashed when another high up in the company tweeted that no htc was not planing a "vanilla" edition... However now the same guy (geek.com) that leaked that sammy was coming out with their has said that indeed htc is coming out with one as well.
So what do you guys think? And the big question would be, if they do come out with it, would we (T-mobile) guys be able to port it over and get OTA's directly from Google?

Exactly what I came to this forum for. If they do release it, can I port it over to my T-Mobile HTC One.
Since the only device announced at I/O was the S4 vanilla edition, I decided waiting around for a Nexus wasn't worthy it. I have the Galaxy Nexus, but I never liked the plastic feel of it and the S4 feels the same way, just with way better specs.
I've always liked HTC devices going back to the Windows Mobile days.

Yeah, I worry about Google's direction to slap AOSP on pre-existing devices (S4/One so far). Sure they don't need to design, engineer and product their own phone (Nexus 4) so from an infrastructure standpoint it makes sense. But once you start porting AOSP to multiple models, it will inevitably slow software releases because Google will have to ensure compatibility with varying hardware. Also, features will be missing that will make people upset (custom camera software, beats, multi-screen, etc).
Sure they will run pure AOSP, but at what cost (feature-wise)? That has me concerned.
Unless HTC/Sammy/Moto? release their highly configured software apps (camera, etc) independently, the AOSP experience on these currently produced devices will leave a lot to be desired, IMO.

I miss AOSP, but for once I feel there's features on the Sense ROM I don't want to give up. I think they did a really good job and for once I'm not pulling my hair out and needing to root the phone. (That's saying something!)

Same goes for me. I could live without the gallery (although nice), beats (there are plenty of EQ apps out there), blink feed, and many others. the one piece i could not go without is the camera software! Sequence shot alone is stellar, and some of the other zoe features are great as well.
That said i am keeping my fingers crossed that the fine devs here will be able to port the camera software to the stock rom when it hits. If that happens this phone would be absolutely perfect in my eyes!

Yes, especially since the announcement did not say it would have TMO radios. I think this is basically an ATT device, similar to the 32 Gb unlocked version.
We may not have to port....

Zoe isn't on by default.
However, I found some pretty good uses for it. It's better than using the "action" shot setting. It's literally like taking freeze frames from high definition video. I've finally been able to get decent pictures of my dog. It's hard to get her to stand still.
The camera was the main reason that I stayed on stock but the aokp camera is actually really good

Operation resurrection for at&t htc one x +

Think that One X plus has been one of the best mobile phones of the year, but I feel that makeup artists have us very forgotten. If it wasn't for Steve007 I think than the At&t does not exist in forums. But where are the geniuses that can make Google Edition or Cyanogenmod? It would be spectacular to see it once with the Sense5, or some mods... but there are very few

International HOX+ ROM for AT&T version
Hello everyone! I made a thread yesterday regarding this thing. We can install any ROM on HOX+ AT&T if we change it's CID to 11111111. I found out the address where the CID is written. Does someone know how to write there? It is located in /dev/block/mmcblk0 which it seems to be the whole phone memory partition. For more details, please look and answer there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449766

Personally I think the devs here have done amazing work on this device! I believe they have created the best possible device out of this hardware with what is given to them. Do not believe we will have S-Off, as I don't believe we will have someone unlock the full potential of the Tegra 3 kernal but I'm fine with that. I don't regret owning this device at all even with the HTC One coming out just months after this device did. At the end of the day my phones battery lasts all day on 4g network, response amazing fast to whatever task I demand from this device, has amazing quality video playback and graphics, plays all my games very smooth and clean, and did we forget the only device probably ever to come stock with 64gb of freakin memory???? When I bought this device the day of launch ATT rep was like WTF 64gb quad core device for only $199? Almost **** his pants and double checked. I'm very grateful for the ATT specific devs here as that's the variant I have and Steve0007 for his amazing work and flawless colored Rom.
