[Q] Samsung Galaxy Express games slowdown - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, I have a Samsung Galaxy Express, which is basically a gimped SIII and ran into some weird slowdown issues. I first noticed with Fast & Furious 6. When I first installed it, it ran smooth. After a few weeks, the game became so choppy it was close to unplayable. I just thought it was a fluke, maybe one of the updates didn't like my phone.
So, after this and other random issues, I did a factory reset. After that I downloaded Injustice, very happy it was finally added for android. Same thing, at first it ran great but after a week or two it started to become choppy. I have cleared all my caches, cleared my ram right before playing by using an app All-in-One Toolbox and I have 2.3 Gigs free space out of 5 Gigs.
The phone runs on Jelly Bean(I think, whatever is 4.1.2) and the model number is SGH-I437. I know there are at least two different Samsung Galaxy Express model numbers so that is why I added that info. I apologize if this issue has ever been asked before, I did a couple searches and could not find anything. Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated!

Yea only problem is that my phone is not rooted so I am not allowed to get rid of any of the "bloatware" applications... I tried to root this phone using Unlock Root Pro or whatever it was called but it did not work. And as far as I know that was the only way to root the Express in the past.

Bad Pigies lag?

Hey everyone, so i downloaded bad piggies, its a pretty awesome game but it had some lag! Now that is surprising cuz on ics im pretty sure it would have ran smoothly cuz i played more graphic consuming games and they were fine. And the funny part my friend has a galaxy tab 2 10.1 and the prime is quad core while the galaxy is dual but he didn't have any lag..?
so does anyone experience the same thing?

Look at the reviews of Bad Piggies in the market, it's a known issue for Primes
I can't help but wondering what I am doing wrong/right. I bought the prime 3 weeks ago new in the store. Upgraded to JB and lost root. I reflashed FULL JB from the Asus site download, wiped data after and installed my apps. Bad piggies plays fine. I don't have the problems in web browsers people talk about. I had to look up what ANR meant when I saw people griping about those and realized I don't have that either. As far as I can tell GPS works wo within the specified 15 meters.
Why is there so much disparity in performance?! I have stock JB and a 3 week old device.

When the device was first released Asus gave us a defective product, nothing could run for 5 mins without crashing, it was a paperweight.
Edit
Hold up, you mean that they are still selling this device??
What is the first few digits of your serial number?

C3OKAS That is an "O" not 0 <-- zero I assume so anyway because later in the digits there is a zero that looks like the zero I just typed.
And yes, OfficeDepot has them for $399 and the dock for $99 new
On the GPS though I do see "searching for satellites" but it has my position correctly enough. Does it use other means to determine? I assume not as it has no cell phone hardware?!
Ultimatly though I paid less than $400 for both parts new so I can't complain.
Adding:
I don't want anyone to think Im saying "What are you whining about". Quite the opposite. I started reading on here after my purchase when I ran across the incredible deal on a new one and thought "Oh crap.. i just bought a piece of junk"
Admittedly I had been playing with it for a couple of days before coming here to look in to rooting it so by then I knew I was seeing ANR's etc... If anything I feel lucky.
C30 and you bought it a few weeks ago? That device was manufactured in march.
Thanks for the replies everybody. On ICS my prime was pretty awesome, very little crashes and almost no lag. I was very exited for jb, maybe it is smoother but it does stutter a lot and game plays of games are apparently laggy. I formated mt device when i upgraded so i dont have a lot of apps. I do hope that asus releases 4.1.2 with fixes.

The only thing I am saying is that my 3 week old prime that came stock ICS and was rooted (but not unlocked) and then updated to JB and I lost root doesnt suffer the things I keep reading people complaining about on here.
Either I am lucky or newer units are improved or perhaps the fact that I kept it stock?! I dunno.
I have found that the ad-supported Rovio games induce lag. I've had better luck with the ad-free versions in the Amazon App Store. I don't know why Rovio won't sell most of their games ad-free in Google Play.
I have this issue as well. Please rate the game accordingly from your prime. Squeaky wheel gets the grease and all.

I downloaded the official ASUS 10.4, unzipped it. The result of the unzip was a new zip file named: US_epad-user-10.4.2.15.zip
I took that zip file and renamed it to the name of the 9.4 version: US_epad-user-9.4.2.28.zip
Placed it on the SDCARD and withing a few seconds was prompted to "Downgrade" I proceeded, it even said a wipe would happen.
When all was said and done my partial fubared root files were gone but as I recall my installed apps were intact. I rebooted and did a wipe anyway and that is what I am running today. Fresh installed 10.4 and wiped user data, fresh installed apps. Being only a few weeks in to ownership it wasnt a big deal.
I can't say I recomment this for an unlocked device as i would be afraid it might screw you up.
I will say this though. The other day after days of the tab not being rebooted I was playing bad piggies and noted it started to "hiccup" in game while my creation was in motion. I exited the game, looked at the task list and saw it still running. I killed it from the list and re-opened and it played normally again.

1) Download JB ROM for your device from ASUS.
2) Unzip the downloaded file.
3) Put the newly unzipped zip file on your SD Card and insert it. The device should offer to upgrade.
If it doesnt then I don't know what else you should do.
If you want root in JB then you need to use OTA Rootkeeper. If it doesnt work then read the guides in these forums about "partial root after JB update"
Good luck.

[Q] Galaxy S3 multitasking issues.

Hi,
First of all, I did a forum search and it seems that not a lot of people are experiencing the same problem as me with the GS3 (almost all related entries are about HOX).
I own an international Galaxy S3, recently updated to Jelly Bean (Vodafone Spain firmware). Thing is multitasking management in my device is a complete crap... for instance, if I open the Kindle app (or the web browser or any other app), then open another app, wait 20 secs and open Kindle again through the multitasking button... it works as expected, reopening the app in the same state it was... but if I wait around 4 or 5 minutes, multitasking doesnt work, this means when I try to reopen the previous app, the S3 redraws it (refreshes it) so I lose the page i was reading on Kindle or the webpage and scroll I had opened in Chrome, etc etc etc.
It just seems to me that memory management in this device goes like this: "Do a kill -9 to every running app process after a given (short) amount of time".
I really like Android and all that but, coming from an iPhone 4 as my previous phone, I've got to say that multitasking management in iOS was far superior... I could reopen apps that had been several hours in background and it always saved the app state, never experiencing these annoying "refreshes" or "redraws" or whatever it's called.
Is there any fix for this? Maybe some custom ROM with better memory management??
I just want to subscribe this thread. Interesting question!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1888081
There, enjoy 7+ apps at the same time.
There are several threads about this already... I know, because I made one of them and there was another one with the same subject. ("Multitasking issues?" And the other one was something with ram
To the topic, I'm having the same issues, but on the galaxy S2 I didn't experience such problems. I don't know but something is really f***** up with the memory management...
You can try making a swap partition, there is a thread somewhere on here about how to make one. That'll dump some memory on the SD CARD. Instead of killing the app..
I can assure you it is not a general android problem. As on the s2 with the same amount of memory (1gb) I didn't have any problems. I thought this phone would be an upgrade.. it is in many ways, but the memory management is really a huge let down...
So my recommendation for you is to first try to remove the bloatware (apps of Samsung or other using memory which you don't need) and see if it makes a change.
If you're still not satisfied try the swap partition.
This phone with it's current software configuration needed 1.5gb of Ram, but with some mods and tweaks you'll be fine!

Put Samsung and Google against the wall...
I'd argue that it is a general android issue. I had exactly the same problem with a htc One X, which also has a high res screen and only 1Gb of mem.
I think the problems with the S3 is ignored because lots of the reports on the web about the S3 is about the US version, which runs fine on it's 2Gb.
This IS a big issue, and i wish someone with a bit of authority would stand up and put Samsung and Google against the wall.
The customers shouldn't have to tweak the OS by adding adding virtual memory management, and whatnot to get basic functionality working.
I had no problems running web radio software in the background on my htc Desire, but with my S3 I can't have anything in the background basically.
This really needs to be resolved. I'd rather have a simpler launcher and having RAM enough to keep stuff running in the background.
I'm running JB since a week ago now, and the behaviour is the same.
I must say I'm dissapointed with Android, first having to live with the Desire for years, that came with next to no space to install apps and now th S3 having no RAM to run in...

Remember, this is the first Jellybean update batch, there should be tons of updates later fixing bugs instead of getting it "working", 1GB is enough when managed properly.

The US 2gb version has a max hidden app limit of 50 hence no complaints.
The others have a 20 max hidden app limit.
Most android devices have a 15 max hidden app limit and some sense roms it's as low as 10.
How do I know?
Because I fixed it

There are other vital changes that I make but Maximum Overdrive the biggie.

The problems are identical on 4.0.4, and I've not seen any acknowledgement on the issues neither from Samsung or Google. I used to think the Apple believers were the most tolerant to absent functionality, but this really puts us on the top as android users. I would probably accept it from a low end device for $100, but the S3 is the pinnacle, the superphone, in short, the dogs bollocks, or awesome, like a hundred billion hotdogs.
I think it just stinks and the thought of having to keep using the S3 every day for a year or two in the current sorry state really pisses me off. The thing is it's my work phone, and I don't expect I'll get a new premium phone if I try 'scrapgrading' it. If it was mine, I'll sell it in a hartbeat.

The same non-existing multitasking brought me here. I got my GSG3 on Saturday, 4 days ago. Am loving it so far.
But one thing I was looking forward the most is mostly absent: switching between apps without them reloading every time I access them again.
I had a HTC Sensation (768mb RAM) where as soon as I left the browser and returned to it, the page was being reloaded, even if I just left quickly for checking my mails or whatsapp. Not cool if you're surfng on your mobile network and have a datacap. Same goes for Games.
Then I had a Xperia S (1 GB Ram) for a few weeks. Same crap. Even if I didn't leave the game but just clicked the standby button, the game would reload when unlockign the phone a few minutes later.
Am really disappointed to see this happen all over again with the Galaxy S3. iOS might not have real multitasking, but I'd take it any day over the crap we are being served.
Just ****ing freeze the app if you can't make it run constantly in the background, I don't care, I just want it to resume EXACTLY where I left it.
I always had the impression its because of low RAM. Even with the SGS3, my RAM is usually something like 730/833mb without really doing anything. Even after clearing memory it's still 614/833mb used. Of course stuff's gonna close.
I really wanted to go for a 2GB model but there simply is nothing on the market here in europe apart from the new Nexus 4. I actually wanted that one real bad - until I learned about 16GB, no SD Card slot and non-removable battery.
So yeah the SGS3 is awesome in many ways, but this blows. I have yet to find a phone that satisfies all my needs. Oh well maybe with the S4, but there's always something isn't it?>.<
before S3 a had a HTC Sensation..multi tasking din't work at all, it always refresh|reload apps
on S3 and android 4.0.4 i think multitasking work better but not so good
as far as i know the only one phone work well with multitasking is Google Nexus and the phones with clean OS from Google.
others brand make modification with OS for their launcher etc and multitasking was broken
This problem is so annoying. Even on my HTC Desire HD switching between apps worked better. I really hate Samsung for all the Touchwiz bloatware crap and for not releasing the Exynos sources/documentation.
Well, I don't have such problems, multitasking is working just fine here unless I open a 2 gb game or Google maps or Google Earth. My ram is between 530 and 640. I have some redraws on home screen sometimes, especially on the weather widget, I can't deny that. Also is true, no 2 gigs phone in Europe until now. I bought mine in May. I will get the S4 next year. Hope to see a better and faster phone.

demlasjr, close all apps and then try opening a page in the browser, leave with home key. start a game, leave again. then open whatsapp/messaging and leave again. finally, open any other app (FB or youtube or whatever) and leave one more time with home button.
Thats just 4 (four) apps! By now the phone has killed your game and your browser. Just bring up the recent apps menu and switch back to the browser. It will reload your entire page from scratch, not a big deal when on wifi but a real pain in the ass when on mobile data. Now try switching to you game, it will reload from the starting screen instead of from where you left.
This IS an issue. People in denial are either oblivious to it (the average user sure is) or they don't mind their apps relaoding from scratch. I could make a nice video to show it since alot of ppl pretend they don't have the problem, but I'm too lazy to prove the obvious and since our international GSG3's all run on 1gb and more or less the same firmware, this simply can not be the case. What is possible is people using only 2-3 apps all the time, thus they never experience the problem. But there are others who don't use their smartphones only for texting and FB.
As a reference, see this thread http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s3/629432-multitasking.html. Exactly what I'm talking about.
Only remedy so far is installing aokp, it alleviates the problem a bit because it allows more open apps. it's still not good.

To be honest, saying something is fixed, and then pointing people to a page that suggests a fix which is just as confusing and difficult to use as the supercharger script, which I could not get to work for love nor money, won't help the majority of people who want a nice and easy fix to something that requires a nice and easy fix.
I tried the supercharger script a number of times and could never get it to stick no matter what I tried so the multitasking patch surely will be just as difficult to get working for the layman as that.
What people really need is a CWM runnable file that fixes this issue.
I will personally use a custom ROM that manages to fix or at least alleviate the issues until Nexus 4 comes back into stock or the Optimus G comes out next year lol.

Only remedy so far is installing aokp, it alleviates the problem a bit because it allows more open apps. it's still not good.

I tried mate. I tried with Tapatalk + whatapp + yahoo mail in Dolphin + cut the rope. Everything works fine and no redraws or refreshes. Only with Google Earth and Maps or very very big games. I can even make a video to shop you that I have no issues. Try this combination and let me know if you have redraws

New HTC owner with horrible app data speeds

Hey all,
I recently got an HTC One and have noticed some really frustrating data slowness in most apps I use. I'm on ATT 4G LTE most of the time and will notice that many apps take forever to load what should be basic things. I seem to be okay when using Chrome to browse websites most of the time but even that can sometimes be quite slow. Other slowdown I've noticed is in things like opening YouTube and just doing a search or having the front page load, opening my Reddit app and having threads load, trying to change stations in Slacker Radio, etc. All of these things give me the spinning wait cursor and it's getting really frustrating, I never had these issues with my last phone(Galaxy S3).
So far I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone but that is all, no custom ROMs or radios or anything yet. The phone did update to 4.3 and I noticed that once I got a notification saying the Superuser binary must be updated but it disappeared. I'm seriously thinking of finding out how to undo the root and bootloader unlock and exchanging the phone but I really really don't want to go through all of that.
Has anyone had any similar issues or have any suggestions?

your phone is broken compared to mine, Apps, Games the internet load so fast I forget I touch the icon, it's like it reads my mind if that makes sense. you have a few choices since your unlocked and rooted, do a backup in recovery and try installing a custom rom like InsertCoin or ARHD or MaximusHD. Their all Very Good. Your other choice is to return to Stock with whats called a RUU, it's a total wipe factory reset deal. You could just uninstall everything and see if one of your installed apps is not working correctly after the update to 4.3. You can do this in settings/backup & reset.
Its a fantastic phone it should be running at least 40% faster than you S3 did
Good luck

Thanks for the info, I think I will try a custom ROM, I was thinking of going just abit more conservative with this phone but meh, all the hard work with unlocking the bootloader and rooting it is over right, so all I have to do is pick a ROM and flash it in recovery?(sorry, it's been alittle whle). I keep hearing about S-OFF, do I need to worry about that?
It is definitely enticing turning the phone into a Google Edition, but I suppose many ofthe custom ROMs are big steps up.
Thanks again for the info!
S-off is great but not necessary. Just follow the instructions for Rom flashing you'll be fine

i'm still on tw and unrooted, works perfectly fine for me unless if i'm hogging up resources
I haven't removed one piece of bloat and still on the stock rom (yesterday installed a custom kernel, but it was actually faster before that. i did it for battery life) and it's still running faster than ever. You might have a defective one.
No problems here, all bloat installed. Actually I have 752 apps installed.
I've used many different kernels and roms, stock and custom.
Only time there is any lag is when the apps are auto updating.
Try disabling any auto update, i.e. play store and Samsung apps.
Either set a schedule or do it manually.
Hope that helps, and I made the jump from s3 to the s5 as well.
T-Mobile Galaxy S5
I would honestly try going back to pure stock and see if you get the same results.
It could be the ROM you're using may have an issue, going back to pure stock can help rule that out.
Alternatively, getting a logcat and seeing if there's a ton of error messages may also do the trick.

I'm on stock rom and rooted. No lag whatsoever. Your running a custom rom and complaining about lag?? There's your issue right there. Most people completely stock don't even have your lag complaints.

Walk that iPhone 5S into the nearest Apple store and ask them to reimage your phone to one without iOS 8 beta....
If you are looking at a replacement, the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S5 with the latest updates is a very solid performing and non-laggy device.
My S5 works great and is:
1. A stock device with no root or customized ROM.
2. Loaded down with a lot of applications and widgets, but I've tested them over the years on an S3 or Nexus so I have a good idea of what is CPU heavy or battery heavy.
3. On the latest firmware (at least until 5PM PST when the VoLTE update is pushed) G900TUVU1ANE6.
4. Turned off S Voice as I primarily use Google Now.
An extra app I do use that I recommend is "AppMgr Pro III". It helps me determine what applications can be moved to SD Card. Some can be moved, but may impact widgets and what not, so it does a good job of letting you know if that is an issue or not.
Now that you are off your laggy phone, tell us how you love your S5
There are some bad S5's out there, got one yesterday. Lag was terrible, almost impossible to type because of the delay, scored low on Antutu, etc. Phone had other issues too - screen had uneven discoloration to it and bottom touch key buttons were unevenly lit.
Exchanged for another one and it was like night and day. All same apps installed, same settings and this new one has almost zero lag, typing is fine. If your phone has severe lag and stuttering, might be worthwhile to get it exchanged... My first one was a major lemon all around.

What is best option for nexus9.

Hi guys,
I'm sorry cause asking this, especially cause this question has been asked manytimes and I have read several subjects too, but I didn't strict answer I'm looking for.
I recently bought nexus 9 (WiFi only model) 16gigs,
I unlocked bootloader, I rooted the device and now I want to debloat it.
I'm in dilema weither I should just have it rooted and debloated on 7.1.1. android, or should I use some of the custom roms around.
I'm aiming to use tablet mainly for gaming. I have servral games I'd like to play listed:
Marvel Future Fight
DC Legends
Star Wars Galaxy Heroes
Star Wars Force arena
and few others but i take it that if those can run fine, all others would too.
Also can someone point me to a safelist of application that can be removed if answer to first question is to just leave it rooted and debloat.
Thank you a lot for help.
Cheers.

For the best performance, install a custom ROM. As for debloat, ... It's a Nexus, what bloat?
But if you want minimal, I would say flash slimrom and the smallest gapps package that fits your needs. Or go gapps free and use micro g instead.
Performance on stock is pretty bad (really bad), but a custom ROM will fix it for the n9. When I say bad on stock, I mean opening more than 1 tab in chrome, it has to reload the page every time switching between the two. Same with having a couple apps open.
Fortunately, most of the ROMs out there take care of all that.

How would someone find official roms? I used pure nexus rom thinking that is official but i guess i was wrong. I not to big on roms knowing. They all looks the same to me I just care to be able to uninstall builtin apps i don't use and that everything works fine.
This one i use now had a problem common with nexus 9, white blocks and anoying skrechy sound, but i read somehwere it is fixed by unhoking battery, cleaning pins and putting it back together. I tried it and I didn't have problems since then. I drained battery to 2% no problem, before it was impossible. I have no idea was it ROM issue or what.

That's a common hardware issue for n9, not a ROM issue.

But it's safe to say that it's fixed now. Everyone was talkin about disconnecting battery, and clean a bit and connecting again.
it seems such a easy troll solution to this "very anoying and hard problem that even HTC didn't solve", and i did it and it really did the job (knock on a wood ). I've been draining battery to the end for 3 days now, nothing ever like that happend ever again. before it wasn't even a day when i didn't experienced that problem.

Good to hear. That usually is the fix for that.
Please, just to confirm, is this "image-volantis-n9f27l" official ROM or it's custom ROM?
I also use this bootloader : "bootloader-flounder-3.50.0.0143" since other ones didn't work for me.
I was with support trying to solve issue of Device restarting every time I install new app or update app, and while trying to clear cache partition, it gone to my device not wanting to boot. so i had to factory reset, and it still won't start android in full. so i have to reflash ROM. I guess.
I'm kinda lost now cause i don't know what to do.
As said i just want for my device to be rooted so i can delete all apps i don't need and change launcher (deleting existing one - well i don't know if it's smart or not. i figure why having two launcers when i will use only one).
And i want to play games and use apps without it failing on me all the time.
