I have tried almost every non-Sense 4.3 and 4.4 ROM I can find for the DNA. Every one I've tried suffers from (seemingly) random cell signal drops.
How I've been flashing these roms: CWM (6.0.4.5) -> Factory reset -> Wipe cache -> Wipe Dalvik cache -> Install ROM from SD Card -> Install GApps from SD Card -> Install SuperSU from SD Card (if necessary)
I'm aware of the difference in how the signal bars are displayed in Sense and CM. I'm not talking about a difference in displayed signal strength. The signal completely dies and shows zero bars. I can't text, browse, ping anything, etc.
I'm currently running the latest version of ViperDNA and have not had the signal die once. My baseband is 1.01.04.0308.
Is this a known issue? If not, any suggestions on how to fix this?

Sorry if this is a dumb response... but thought I'd offer my suggestions. Have you tried a 4.1 or 4.2 and/or Sense based ROM recently to see if the same issue is present? If not, I would check that first. It may not be the ROM and may be the device. I ran into this problem before rooting and still on stock. I believe there are known SIM issues with the DNA. I've had to replace the SIM card several times.
Going to give a 4.3 based ROM a try for the first time this weekend. I'll let you know if I run into similar issues.
Test a stock ROM. And see if issues r the same.

I had the same problem with cell signal off and on including on stock and 4.3 roms. It seems to fix it temporarily if you re-seat the sim card. This works for me but the problem is very on and off its hard to pin it down.
When I was running into the dropped signal problem while trying different 4.3 / 4.4 AOSP ROMs, I removed the SIM card and cleaned it with an alcohol wipe. I also cleaned out the SIM slot with compressed air. That did not seem to make any difference.
I haven't had any signal or SIM problems on ViperDNA or stock. I haven't tried any other Sense ROMs, since ViperDNA works well.
I noticed that on some 4.3 AOSP ROMs, my APN list would be completely blank after flashing. Don't know if that is relevant.
+1, I experience the same issue including dropping WiFi.

I had troubles previously with WiFi on AOSP ROMs but I thought it was a router issue. I made some changes to my home router but I also went back to ViperDNA at the same time.
After trying multiple AOSP 4.3/4.4 ROMs at home, I can confirm that my WiFi drops frequently. No WiFi drops with a stock DNA in the house and no issues with my DNA running ViperDNA.
I remember reading somewhere that some people were having issues with routers using WEP. My router is using WPA2 Personal w/ AES.
There has go be an answer for this. I love the AOSP roms but the one thing that keeps me from using them as a daily driver is this issue.

Seems like the problem was my SIM card not making a firm connection. I found a couple of posts about putting tape on the back on the SIM card so it will make a tighter connection. I used a piece of electrical tape on the back of the SIM card and trimmed it down to the edges with a blade cutter.
So far, so good. I've tried a few different 4.3/4.4 AOSP roms and haven't had a single cell signal drop.
Anyone know why Sense vs. AOSP would make a difference, if the root problem was a loose SIM card connection?

I recently switched radios and went to 2.0 and installed the BAMF sense 3.0 rom. All was okay, wifi wasn't working so I switched to a different BAMF gingerbread rom and noticed 3g wasn't working.
Then I switched back to my old configuration, factory rom and radio so I could diagnose what my issue was. I saw fixes online posted when eHPRD was down to dial ##778# enter the password and then disabling eHPRD and going to "enabled". This fixed my issue.
So here comes my question. If 3g only works when eHPRD is disabled is it my sim that is broken? ALSO I cant check if 4g works because I used phone info to change to "CDMA auto (PRL)" and I can't switch back to the LTE mode because my network types are really odd. Are these options different because of CM7 or because I have eHPRD disabled, or because my sim is likely dead?
Pic of network type options from the Phone Info screen is attached.
Don't take this offensively, but did you try scrolling the window down? I see in your pic there are lower options not visible in the window without scrolling.
Just checking all bases
Always safe to check! The last 3 options are "evdo only" "gsm/cdma auto (prl)" and "unknown"
I didn't bother to post them because before I had about 4 different options I think, I have no idea how I got all these random options. Is it kernel related, radio related, rom related, or dead sim related -_-
Hmm ok just checking.
Well that is very odd indeed. I am running MR2 + Das BAMF Gingerstripped with Imoseyon 3.4.0 GB Sense lean kernel and do have some odd connectivity issues, even with 3g. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it might be advisable for you to reflash the radio, then reflash the ROM and do a full data wipe factory reset. I mean that sounds like a very bad problem and personally dealing with Verizon and SIM cards is a royal PITA which you should leave as a last resort. So try doing a completely fresh install imo. It's the only way to rule out any uncertainty.

Yeah I forgot to mention that I have reflashed back to the older radios and to the news, I have tried seemingly every combination. The only way I can get 3g to work is to disable the eHPRD.

I had a similar situation on a different rom. Everything was working fine until I updated to a newer rom build, and I lost 4G. I figured it was verizon messing with the towers, so I didn't worry about it. But two days later, I still had no 4G (I still had 3G). I went on a weekend trip to another 4G area, and no dice. I flashed every combo of rom & radio and couldn't get it to work. When I got back home, I went to verizon & swapped sim cards, and still no 4G. I finally went back to bone stock and got 4G again. I have no idea why this happened, but be prepared to go back to stock if reflashing & sim swapping doesn't help.

It appears you both were right. Went back to complete stock and I have 3g working in eHPRD mode. Willing to bet 4g works again too. Thanks for the help...I guess I will update this thread if I find anything new out.
Just as an update...not sure what I might have done wrong before...
But I went back to stock with root, then went to the CM7 that worked with MR1, then I went to CM7 that worked with MR2, then I put MR2 in.
Everything is working perfectly now.
Glad its working fine. I personally wouldn't advise messing with any particular Radio settings aside from switching it from CDMA + LTE/EVDO to CDMA auto (PRL). Anything else and you're just opening up a can of worms that no one really knows anything on.
I keep having the data to drop off completely most of the time the only way to regain it is to reboot. It seems to be worse when I'm in a 3g area, more frequent. I am rooted I have tried several different Roms from Aosp to sense flashed a couple different radios but still have these annoying data drops. Has anyone else encountered this and is there some way to make this phone more stable?
Solved. well sort of.

On after reading a ton of post thru out the web and trying different things nothing helped. Still had constant data drops. So I tried the. Bamf_forever_1.10 rom. I have been on this rom now for 2 days so far zero data drops. I have not changed anything else just flashed this Rom. So I guess the question is what makes this rom so different that it holds the signal so much better?
Good to c you got it working, mine took a phone replacement. Maybe you found the right combo of ROM/radio.

Yes maybe. But too bad I may be limited to a single Rom. At least this one is very impressive to say the least.
Make a nandroid, make note of the radios n keep flashing/experimenting. Maybe your phone likes sense 3.0?? Yeah, forever 1.10 is one of my go to's on my sd card, good ROM

TL;DR Does the full ICS update fix 4G data crashes and reboots?
I have had the rebooting issues and 4G data crashes that seem so common on many forums however I have yet to read about a fix for them.
The reboot issue seemed to be caused by the phone switching between 3g and 4g. Using LTE On/Off prevents the reboots but I get random 4G crashes. They last only a few seconds but once they start its near impossible to use data and the phone must be restarted anyway. I'm rooted, S-Off with the recent ICS radios flashed on a Gingerbread ROM. My question is will flashing the full ICS ROM fix the issues? Or will a new SIM card fix the problems? Im still a little noobish with this stuff so please be gentle.
It might help considering the ota included a completely reworked ril and some other components the ril didn't have before that help tons. I haven't had one data drop where I have to switch to airplane mode or toggle data to get it back. I'm not running the official build but one of Santod's roms that is using the new ril.

Yes, the update and more importantly, the radios and new Ril, do fix the data drops, reboots, battery drain, etc,...
Well worth the upgrade in my opinion.
First time in a long time, that I have felt the radios were actually solid.
Thank you, I will be trying one of Santod's tonight.
And Santod thank you for getting the radios and ROMs out so quickly. Much appreciated!
Hello XDA World,
I have had my i717(AT&T) for few years and over those years used roms with no issues at all, anyone else having issues with candycatt besides the known issues of flicker and or camera? I installed this rom to instructions standards, and to my own haha (even uber version).
Qlease anyone have an issue or fix for no data (can place/receive calls and text) no internet unless wifi?
Other roms (old/new) even with no MD5 i still get data.
My Candycatt:
Pros:
Great Rom
Smooth and Fast
Not a battery destroyer
Cons:
No Data (for me)
Flicker (trying a fix/patch found in thread)
Random Reboots
Update 4/14 241pm: I was At&t contract then switch to go phone, i called them first because was not getting 4g LTE they fixed it on there end, guess the go phone card (new) stated i had basic phone....at that time i reverted back to blackstar x1 everything worked except minor issues guessing do to md5.
Sincerely,
a not so noob, but still a noob

Thank you for the quick reply, I am ATT and went from contract to go phone 4g LTE prepaid. I called them and fixed issue few days ago because was not getting 4g LTE service or Data...it was an issue on there end guess there updated info said i had a basic bell phone.
When i reverted back to Blackstar X1 data worked fine, but rom had issues not sure if MD5 error or due to new version of JB/KITKAT.

Yes it is, fallowed step by step as usual and directed on thread. Since having issues and 3+ installs and no fixes I checked and cleaned all xboxes through latest twrp. After instruction step by step I tried so many ways haha. Wipe after zip flash, wipe after ROM boot the whole 9 yards.
My phone says 4g LTE and standard os settings reads ATT network, with out WiFi browser and Google play state no connection. When I get time I will send photos of important settings and issues with this ROM and old black star to prove DATA works on other ROMs.
Sincerely

Problem solved (ATT GoPhone Sim) into I717 that was contract phone....I still do not know if it was a CK issue or switching to GoPhone 4g LTE sim plan but APN was not set up.

So I have been trying various MM roms but have finally admitted defeat and gone back to stock.
For what ever reason mobile signals for Virgin (EE) by us is not great, but the OPx has proved the worst phone I have owned yet with regard to making best use of what reception we do get, (Still have OP1 and S7 owners in the house, so have comparison).
However, all of the many MM roms I tried only made things worse with either weaker signal (or that's how it appeared) or they were unable to handle the swap between Wifi and Mobile, always requiring reboot, once I left the homes Wifi in order to get mobile data working!
It's so bad that I am even considering replacing the phone, but it's hard to find anything else in budget and size with same spec.
Thanks to everyone here who builds these custom roms and all the accompanying support, but for now I will continue with stock until I miss MM facilities too much.

It's just face value which shows yellow line in battery graph as far as I can tell. I do not see any difference now. Transition from wifi to mobile data is fine here. I am using turbo at the moment. Give it a try. If you wanna switch to a new phone, moto g4 plus should be good choice.

Hi, sorry not sure I understand the first part of your reply.
Anyway, the truth is that apart from this recent damned data issue, this is close to the perfect phone for me (seriously couldn't go for anything as large as the g4).
I have owned the OPx since release and though mobile data was never the best, it wasn't as bad as it has appeared this last couple of weeks. I am hoping that I have had a 'perfect storm' of events that led to 2 weeks of poor data connections/transfers. Bad roms, poorly implemented, weak mobile data areas etc etc.
Therefore, I am going to continue with testing different roms and set ups and hope that I can fix the issue, because there is no other phone on the market that comes as close to my perfect phone as the X.
I second Turbo ROM but also try Validius. Using it right now I think they feed it steroids.
For me this solution worked when facing troubles with mobile data on custom roms:
(Re)install the stock rom, backup EFS in Twrp, do a complete wipe, flash custom rom, restore EFS in TWRP, reboot to rom, restore standard settings in APN / mobile data settings, reboot.
It solved my frustrating issues, hopefully it does the same for you!

Many thanks for replying, I had indeed seen your thread and tried the solution, though initially I didn't think it had solved my issue. However, due to there being no other phone I care for, I tried another rom and then reflashed the EFS backup.
And you know what, I think it may just have worked this time.
Thanks for your help and others.

That's the one I'm trying and so far so good
It would be great if someone could create a flashable zip with oxygen RIL to use on any custom ROM. Don't even know if it's possible? Perhaps @RJDTWO can enlighten us, do you have the expertise? ?
Sultan's rom is the most stable regarding cell signal quality and speed. I have tried lots of roms, his rom is the only rom that comes near oxygen, every other custom rom has considerably worse lte speed and signal quality
@cokesucker it needs integration with the rom as far as i know, i think Sultan made the modifications needed for the rom to work with oxygen RIL
Folks, Ive dirty flashed the latest Rom, which I assume writes over the stoc EFS restore I had applied previous version of this Rom
Regardless, the difference in signal (as well as other areas) is noticeable.
I love this phone again, thanks everyone.

This is unfortunately not possible. The RIL itself is built with the ROM.

I tried most things and thought that occasionally I had solved it by 'forcing wifi' or whatever.
However, because much I what I did was reactionary rather than trying scientifically to identify the main issues, the causes probably got lost in location, reboots, resets, etc etc.
What I can say is that for 2 days, I have been using Sultanas latest Rom and it has worked flawlessly.
Nice, good to hear Bob!
I'm using that rom too, it's a real gem!
(Oxygen EFS restoring was still necessary despite the oxygen ril though)
