So I want to know if it is possible to root the phone without going to a custom bootloader? The reason I ask is because my work phone cannot be rooted and connect to our Exchange server.
I would like to root phone, change the database settings to allow me to turn on wifi hotspot, and unroot without having to reflash all of the things it takes to reset the bootloader flags and loosing database settings from when I was root.
Additional reading has lead me to this:

It may appear there is no way to do this. Is this because no one has made signed copies of .zip exploits? Or is it for some technical reason that everyone just goes in through the Bootloader first? I am just trying to enable wifi hotspot, so if someone has advice on how to do so, please give me your suggestions.

HTC changed the hboot and you can no longer boot to recovery ...you have to flash it
only way to flash it is to unlock the bootloader. you unlock it through revone (s-off) or htcdev those are your options

Does the hardware on the HTC Flyer check the bootloader's digital signature?
Can anyone answer this?
I am bumping this thread again.
Will someone please answer this question?
It comes from the store locked, but you can unlock it by going to
http://www.htcimeiunlock.com/
They will allow an unlock, but you lose your warranty.

He means if the boot loader is locked, not the carrier. And also to the OP, do you mean read-write access to the boot loader or something else?
I want to know if the first stage bootloader is signature checked by the HTC Flyer's boot ROM. If it isn't then the locked bootloader problem can be solved by simple overwriting it. And yes, read/write access would be required to overwrite the bootloader.

Well i would say no. You can't get a custom boot loader to load 2 roms or anything yet. No access at all, read or write.

No it isn't, it's actually easy to edit a bootloader, it's getting it onto the device that's hard.
I still would like to know if the bootloader itself is signature checked.
well then read my last post.
The only thing your previous post tells me is that accessing the area where the bootloader resides is difficult.
The the "no it isn't" doesn't mean anything?
Sorry. I thought you were talking about simple read/write access.
Master Melab,
PM me is you have specific questions, you can post a summary after that if you want.
I messaged you my questions.
curious about what youre getting at,so subscribing

if its fairly easy to edit a bootloader, is it not possible to patch the HC hboot to think the radio is s-off(like the revolutinary does),then simply install that hboot in place of the real one, when following the HC install guide?
seems after one roots GB with revolutionary,it should be fairly easy to get an s-off HC hboot for someone who knows how to do such things what am i missing?
Is it possible to get temp root only in such a way it doesn't mark the bootloader as TAMPERED?
For what it's worth, there is only a handful of reasons I would ever need root access and quite honestly I don't see the need to be rooted 100% of the time.
However, I don't feel the need to have to unlock the entire bootloader from HTC Dev just to install an APK or two.
Thanks for any pointers!

You only need to unlock the bootloader if you want to flash custom roms and such. If you just want root access for apps just use zedomax's root and dont unlock the bootloader. You only get the tampered messages if you unlock the bootloader.

Actually that's wrong. They're two different things. If you root, it'll show tampered, whether unlocked or not. Locking or unlocking will not effect tampered status. Any root will show tampered. It goes away if you use RUU.
To answer the question asked, no. At the current time it is not possible to root without tampered bootloader

Yea i didnt word it very well. I assumed the reason the op was asking is so he could get back completely to stock if need be. If he only roots and then runs the ruu he would be back to stock. Thanks for clearing it up.
Thanks for the info - I didn't understand the mechanism that triggers the bootloader to show tampered.
Ultimately, I was looking into determining whether or not ICS encrypted the mail (not gmail) database, regardless of the device itself being encrypted or not.
Hi, guys! I'm new to modifying the Android OS, and have a question that I haven't been able to find the answer to, so I was hoping that some of you guys could shine some light on my situation. I have a HTC One Max (T6#UL), running 4.4.2 with HTC SDK API level 6.20 (If that's relevant), that I received from work. When I boot it into the Bootloader, it says that the Bootloader is locked, and S is-Off. What I want to do is root it, and install a new ROM, but I'm confused on what exactly to do in this case. I've read that because S is Off, this overrules unlocking, and I can go ahead and install custom recovery (TWRP) now. Is this the case? Do I have to FDR before doing it? What is the best method to go about this? Please let me know if you need any phone/bootloader info.
Thanks for reading, any help is greatly appreciated!

I would because as you will find out you can't simply flash twrp as is now. You need an ruu mode version of twrp to flash instead of flashing normally.

Okay, thank you, Dottad! This helps a lot.

If you are "Locked" and "S-OFF", that likely means somebody locked it afterwards to use the fingerprint sensor, since that requires a locked bootloader.
What you need now is to go to the bootloader and execute a couple of specific commands.
I believe the specific thread here has the instructions.
I actually did this once to try the fingerprint sensor. Had to figure out the hard way that "fastboot oem unlock" doesn't work after you S-OFF.
After you unlock, you don't need anything else. You can just flash TWRP normally via fastboot.

No and yes:
If you're phone is S-ON and bootloader Locked (or relocked) No, it's a security feature to prevent unauthorized access to your data. Without this security, anyone with the appropriate knowledge could easily dump your phone data to a computer without having to enter a pin/password (lockscreen) and that would only take a few minutes (and it looks like that's exactly what you're trying to do... Stolen phone? Spying on your GF/BF? )
Yes only if the phone is S-OFF: you can pack a custom recovery image named "recovery.img" and the appropriate android-info.txt file inside a firmware.zip and flash it in ruu mode. Again, it will only works if the phone is S-OFF, otherwise the bootloader will refuse to flash that firmware.zip since it will not be signed with HTC's encryption key.
And BTW your question is really OT here, it's a forum section for Tasker (Tasker is an application)

Anything else you need to know about htc phones?
Wanting to root Alcatel Fierce (model #5049z) and trying to discover whether boot loader is "locked". Read all the posts here concerning this phone and still don't know whether it can be rooted (yet). This is a fairly new phone and information for/about it is sparse. Anyone familiar with this phone and can offer up some vital stats/information or where I might obtain the information? This phone has "unlock boot loader" option, but not sure it works? HELP!!!!!! [Android 7.0]
THANX:
Rick
This does have a oem unlock option yet king root or kingo root doesnt work lol anyways I just picked one of these phones up today and looks like I will have to create my own root and hell mise well get a working twrp in order too. Back to the kitchen!
Just check whether bootloader is unlocked using fastboot.
Use rooting tools after unlocking.
Thats the plan, I planned on creating a way to root then once rooted I can make a full dump if all the partitions of the phone with fire flash then off to deodexing and debloating the system and placing SuperSU in the system so no more issues with root
I will like to know the working method as well i have turned on that option to unlock the bootloader but i have failed to google anything that actually works I have tried iroot, rootme, SRSRoot for Android and none of them was able to root the device
Anything yet?
Has anyone going out anything on this phone. Would like to be able to change a few settings on this phone. Thanks.
