[Q] General Note 3Kernel/Recovery questions?? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hi all! I had an E4GT and I can say that I am comfortably experienced in flashing roms and all that fun stuff. Though I got a Sprint GNote 3, and Im thinking of getting it rooted sometime this week. Though before I do so I wanna make sure I do my homework, and get comfortable in the GNote 3 world. So if anyone could help me out I had some questions specifically about kernels and recoveries
So...
1.) one of the biggest questions I had was I know that the Kernel and recovery are separate. So how do I go about flashing recoveries?
I know that there is flashify in app market which a lot of people use to flash twrp. Though can I also safely use odin>PDA box to do so as well.
2.) And for Flashify and Odin which file do i use. img.tar for both?
3.) Will flashing a recovery via PC odin trigger yellow triangle on start up?
4.) Im assuming you can still use PC odin> PDA box to flash .tar kernels. Will this trigger triangle as well?
5.) though it seems that devs on note 3 page, have taken a favor to .zip files to flash in twrp rather then .tar, so is it generally safe to flash these .zip kernels in twrp?
and lastly, I have to say, ive been using the note 3 for several weeks and LTE seems to be everywhere and it is very fast. Browsing the web has been a breeze on this device. So im concerned that my note 3 being on anything other than Stock kernel will interfere with its performance, as ive read of some bugs here and there. Basically my question is do most people find that the custom kernels out there are buggy, and do you think I would be better off with stock kernel for now. If not what stable kernels do you recommend?
Thank you for puttin up with this somewhat tedious post, I just want to make sure I have all the info i need, so I dont mess up this beautiful device. So any responses, and clarification would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Answer, try Odin first, have flashify as your fallback. For some of us, the latter was the only option, not that we didn't try PC Odin first.
2.) And for Flashify and Odin which file do i use. img.tar for both?
Answer, Odin=tar, flashify=img
3.) Will flashing a recovery via PC odin trigger yellow triangle on start up?
Answer, trips the Knox counter. You'll not see the yellow triangle unless you go into the bootloader.
4.) Im assuming you can still use PC odin> PDA box to flash .tar kernels. Will this trigger triangle as well?
Answer, I believe no, but I'm unclear on this one. That stated, the only kernels of which I'm aware are zips. You could see if @freeza will cook you up something.
5.) though it seems that devs on note 3 page, have taken a favor to .zip files to flash in twrp rather then .tar, so is it generally safe to flash these .zip kernels in twrp?
Answer, only way of which I'm aware.

Answer, kernel development is just getting started, but we have some excellent choices for such a young device. Stable kernel is beast 2.3. Run with it. Iterations prior were buggy only when viewed through the prism of these were discrete options. They weren't, just honing of the same until it got to stable.

Answer, nothing tedious about it. Rather you ask now than later in a hot panic. You know what you're doing, which is 90 percent of the battle. Welcome to the community bro. Awesome compared with the E4GT.
Thanks

Happy to help. The only thing I would change from my post above is that the phone is way better than the E4GT. The forums there are the finest in xda.

[Q] Two questions as I try to organize myself before rooting

So I've done a few roots before but each time I always do the same research, going through all of the guides and making sure I'm fully aware of everything that could factor in before proceeding (one bad experience'll do that to ya). I'm pretty sure I have everything together and just have three questions before I begin:
1) I have an AT&T Galaxy SII but am not sure whether or not I have the UCKK6 over the air update. How would I go about checking this?
2) I was mostly interested in Villainrom as a custom rom, however, I noticed that there is only a release in the international version of the Galaxy S II (at least as far as I can find). Do the differing features between the two phones mean that I am unable to install this? If so I was going to go with CM7 (I've been a CM fan for a while now and with ICS coming it was a close decision between the two), however, I noticed on their official site the phone pictured with the Galaxy SII section is the International version. This kinda ties back in with my first question, being I don't want to attempt to flash something that has a chance of not working
3) I planned on using superclick to root, and then I have mobile odin pro to flash the rom. As far as I know these are the only two programs/files I need for the process besides the Rom, is that correct?
Thank you for your time!

1) Settings > About Phone > Android Version (2.3.6 = KK6, 2.3.4 = KH7)
2) Hellraiser (look in the development forums); you may have a problem with the links. Someone posted theirs, but I can't find it. Hopefully someone can post theirs here.
3) I don't know. I think it'd have to be a tar file. Typically, you want to get a CWM kernel and install from there (see stickies or development; somewhere around here there's a guide). Creepy Crawly's sticky in general is probably what you want. I only use mobile odin to flash modems and kernels; hadn't used it to flash an entire rom. The only other use I've seen others report is flashing firmwares.

1. Settings > about phone then scroll to the bottom.
2. Use hellraiser to run i9100 roms minus any ics roms. Look in developmentsection.
3. Look in sticky section for root instructions. After that mobile Odin a custom kernel then find the ROM you want flash in cwm then flash hellraiser package

Dude, if this is a question for you, then forget modifying your phone until you read some more. Did you look at the sticky? Make sure you understand it before you attempt rooting or flashing anything.

There's no reason for you to be an asshole... I've flashed phones before. Because I wasn't sure whether this specific update info could be found in that section or not is the reason I asked. Sure I could've Googled it just as easily but I had a more important question to ask, namely the one referring to the use of international roms. I've been modifying devices for about six years now, from flashing/upgrading/downgrading PSPs, iPhones, rooting phones and various devices in between. Your advice I'm sure applies to some people but that doesn't mean you give it sounding like an elitist prick. Get over yourself, you're not some master flasher and you have no idea my specific experience. I'm waiting for an all in one because its easier and I don't necessarily NEED a rooted phone right now, not because I'm so technologically inept I couldn't figure it out.
If you couldn't figure out something as basic as finding which ROM version your phone is running, then you certainly are likely to find yourself among those who come in here looking for help after a flash goes bad. The forums are littered with them. I wasn't trying to sound like a prick (although I often do) with that reply, I was just encouraging you to take my earlier advice on reading up more before attempting a flash. Everything you asked about could be answered by just doing a little research instead of starting a new thread.

I've done plenty of generic reading on it, plenty of nooby guides, plenty of flashes. I wasn't certain whether or not that update was something associated with the overall "system firmware" or whatever the terminology is. There's a certain way of suggesting things to do, and you as a "help giver" have a responsibility to make sure you're a) giving accurate advice in regards to someone's scenario and b) giving it in a way that doesn't make you out to be a jerk

New to Android

Hello everyone I am new to Android world as of today. I've been on iPhone for the past 2 years and honestly apple has nothing compared to Android. My galaxy note is like a handheld computer... like holy s**t I'm so overwhelmed right now. But as a noobie I do have a couple questions...
Is it worth rooting and flashing a custom ics ROM (what's the best ics ROM to date) when my service provider Telus is releasing ics by early July?
Also, is it possible for me to download the official ics via ota with a rooted phone? If so how do I do that. I've read threads that sometimes rooting disables ota download.
Thanks for looking and I apologize for being a dumba**.

Are you new to android? Then experience your android phone as it is without rooting just yet. As you experience your phone and read some threads you will get to know if rooting is for you or not. This also will allow you to see if your phone may have issues.
If you want the OTA Telus ICS then I suggest you don't root. I don't believe you would receive the OTA unless you were stock unrooted. So my suggestion would be to hang in there for a little time.
Welcome, and congratulations on seeing the light!
The ICS roms we have are awesome so far, with only a couple random bugs that don't keep them from being daily drivers. I definitely recommend rooting and romming if you take the time to read up on everything you can about it. It's a very simple process if you take your time, and definitely worth learning.
Also, if you feel like doing the official update get familiar with how to go back to stock. When you go back to stock, it renews your warranty and also your ability to receive official firmware updates.
Personally, I think that custom roms are better than official, and once your official is released, you will be able to get a rooted version on here within a day out two at most usually. The only time my Samsung phones have ever had stock software is the first and only the first day I have them, and also if I need to do a warranty exchange
Edit: not seeing a stock package for Telus, stop I would hold on for a bit or try to work with a developer to get them what they need to set up a stock Odin package for Telus users.
Second edit: actually it looks like there is a stock package for you. I can help more with some links later, but can't right now

Welcome to the best phone world you can imagine and you made a wise choice to pick up the big boss aka the G note...youll love it stock or rooted and with customs roms on it....this community is the best and has some great devs also any rom you choose your gonna love their rom believe me....Ive been to here and went to the htc one x and to the international note and now im back to stay....those other phones couldnt compare to this one...the international note is brick heaven and the htc one x is just too damn small when your coming from a note lol....but if you love having your phone tweaked out like me then yes root and rom it out lol...but if all that doesnt matter than you can stay stock and still love the phone just as much....but once again wise choice on the phone and glad to have you here....
Please make yourself familiar with the phone first like everybody else suggested. I have gone through few android phones and I still have so much to learn especially when it comes to rooting and loading roms. With samsung, there's a flash counter if you care about warranty and what not even though there are ways to go around it. I have rooted mine but staying on the stock rom and waiting for the official ICS rom. GB rom is perfectly working fine for my needs.
Please read and read over and over everything before you go ahead and mess around with the rom.

There is a flash counter reset, so that's basically a null point. Plus, many people have had no problem returning or exchanging with it tripped.

Yes. I know there is. That's why I said there are ways to go around. I have rooted mine with the one roloracer posted and can use CWM to flash all different roms without even tripping the flash counter to begin with. One less step of needing to reset the counter.
I just want OP to be aware of it.

Welcome Android! The Note is my first Android phone. I also came from iPhone and don't regret the move at all. Note is the best overall phone experience I've had.
This is sort of on topic, is there a comparison thread of the different roms and what they have to offer vs. others? That kind of thread might be really helpful for new and seasoned pros.

pretty much the only diff in roms are
CM9 & AOKP have all the bell & whistles ...such as tweaks and etc...
the others are stock based with addition add ons...either way you gonna love it...we have awesome devs in this community...as youll soon see....and glad to have you in the note community...

just know that you will lose a lot of the S-pen and all Touchwiz capabilities if/when you go with any version of cm9, aokp, or aosp.
I'd stock with GB for a few weeks so you can get used to the menu interfaces and lingo surrounding Android. After that, game on!
Welcome to Android, friend.
Normally, when I first buy a phone, I like to play around with it stock for a few months before flashing the radio or switching roms etc. Just to get familiar with the phone. Since you're new to the whole Android platform, you should definitely get used to it first since there are endless possibilities you can play around with even with a stock rom.
An official ICS 4.0.3 has already been confirmed for release, why not wait for it? An official update will always be 100% safer and run a lot smoother.
This is what I recommend and I am going to be patiently waiting for the ICS 4.0 to officially be released. It's just a matter of time.
How many times have we seen a user new to android/note that root, flash, and ATTEMPT to reset the flash counter only to come to this board crying that their phone is bricked? (one or two a month?)
As others said, if you root/flash, when Ice Cream Sandwich becomes available from your carrier, you will not get it.
If you do root/flash, DON'T worry about the flash counter because if something goes wrong with reseting the flash counter, you might have a brick but most likely several hours of panic/frustration trying to get your phone working.

Its more so a new user to xda thing as I see it. Yes, its partially a new to android thing, but if they learned how to search and read and learn everything they can, all of the info is out there to safely do anything. I had one brick way back when with my captivate, and from that point on I made sure to read as much as possible before doing anything. New users think they will just have everything handed to them and it will work perfectly, which is where they run into problems because they don't know of all the common problems and mistakes due to taking the fast track instead of actually learning about the processes.
Bottom line is they need to not only search and read, but also absorb and understand the material that is available on this site.

The more a user reads and researches the less cluttering threads we have and the more they learn
Which the MAJORITY of people here don't do..
Sad.. truly sad but let them brick their devices as a consequence lol

My advise would be to wait at least a month, do your research, stay on top of the forums, read all the important threads, etc. When I moved over from iPhone I waited about a month and even though it is soooo much easier to root an Android then jailbreaking an iPhone, its just means its that much more easier to make mistakes. Take your time, don't rush it Welcome to the dark side.

[Q] New to Note

had an Infuse for about a year. loved it and was suprised as to what i was able to learn. i was actually able to trouble shoot some of other peoples issues. most of it was people not following OP correctly. some of them you would think they were scoring with a girl for the first time in high school. they just plug it in and blow their load.
However, day after thankgsiving AT&T had some incredible deals for a refurbed Note. cant beat $31.
I have been learking here for almost a month and reading as i did on the Infuse. trying to gain the confidence i need to take the leap and root.
one thing i am noticing or think i am noticing.....or maybe i dont understand.
stock rooted? you can root phone but not necessarily have CWM ?
Infuse had an all in one package.
from what i am gathering.....when i flash, do i need to flash rom, modem and kernal on 3 different flashes? trying to peice a package that works best? cant say that i notice in descriptions (as with Infuse) ex ; "Joe Blows ROM
UCLB3 modem
super nuclear kernal with OC/UV
i am sure this is in the Super Everything Thread, but sometimes my brain pan does not absorb everything. thats why i read read read and i will read some more. again responses from the more experience give me confidence.
probably my hugest issue is, it seems no matter what rom i look at the main issue is random reboots or phone just shutting down. to me does this almost negate some benefits of rooting?
everybody said the Infuse was unbrickable? for the most part i beleive that, usually somebody not following directions was the problem. regardless, super easy to unbrick and return to stock.
However, when i hear, Do you have a jig? or sending phone out to have fixed, makes me wonder if the Note bricks easier and harder to unbrick. I know that if I try, i can REALLY eff something up.
dont want to do that.
i know every phone is different and every rom works differently on those phones, so i know not to ask which rom is better for me. if i decide to, i will find which rom I like the best.
my Infuse HAS grown up to be a Note and i am happy to climb aboard this forum
To root this phone you flash a kernel to the stock rom. But to do this you have to flash a replacement recovery, and that is done with a pc using Samsung's software named Odin.
i am familiar with Odin. i have used it on many occasions and am comfortable with that. however even in the reading i have done this is the first i have heard of a "replacement recovery".
this sounds as if flashing the new kernal to the stock rom is what will root the phone?
i thought the tar file is what did this.
i will keep reading until i come up 2 threads or suggestions of rooting that sound as if the process is the same.
dont misunderstand, i am not saying that anybody is wrong. i am sure all of these methods work. again, if i want to i can really screw something up. i am sure some of these different methods are some different terminology. mainly i want to feel confident and have my process firmly embedded in my mind and act it out properly.

The stock recovery doesn't let you flash anything. So you flash the replacement recovery with Odin. You are replacing the stock with either CWR or TWRP.
Then, using the new recovery you flash the rooted kernel, or any rom you like.
As for your Super Everything Thread .. Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28040353

i am sure i will be getting plenty of use out of that one.
appreciate your help. both you and the captain explained it very plainly and simply, eliminating any confusion.
thank you both.actually very similar to Infuse.
now i just have to decide whether i would benefit from it.
hmmmmmm
Installing the recovery is worth the trouble. Besides the romantic flashing, you can change modems, install mods, make a backup.

yeah, and i have done all that with the Infuse. other then mods, tweaks and themes, what else did i benefit from?
Infuse was on Froyo and had a multitude of ROMS and interfaces to choose from. GB, ICS and JB. i am already ICS and JB is the only step up. actually with the similarities between the two, how much am i really gaining or what am i changing?
im kind of shopping some ROMS and looking for something to catch my eye. i am not seeing too many differences. i do have a bigger screen though and i did like the tablet mode of PA. only that and CM10 were the only ones that had tablet mode there.
im really not in any hurry and there is the rumor of official JB for the Note, but i know how that went with GB for the Infuse. the pushed it out too quick and had many problems. unofficial releases were more reliable and theming was pretty cool.
once again, i appreciate the input there Ranger.
All this, but no where has it been said that you have indeed a i717 Note. This, I think is how most people find themselves with a brick. Being in the wrong device section of the forum. Trivial and redundant as it sounds no one can afford to get this confused.
:screwy:Never mind, see it now, just had to run my big mouth, didn't I ?:banghead:
BLACKSTAR XI -SGH-I717 xda-developers app SAMSUNG done right
Yeaaaah, ooops. Well there's another use for the Spen and a place to store it.
But you are correct, I have witnessed the destruction of at least ten notes and some S2's by being in the wrong forum.
This is dangerous business.

Any and all roms

if you add a rom or install a rom, do you lose any functionality, like gps, mms, sms, i have google this and get different answers, i keep coming here to read the threads, but no real info. im rooted on galaxy note 2 and noticed the instant i went root the internet and other files access way faster, why is that. and if any info on best rom at the moment on verizon note 2 and a walk through link if possible. thanks guys great site by the way everyones all about helping each other out
My favorite ATM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35633946. Installation instructions are in the thread, assuming you've unlocked the bootloader from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35348366. I've found no bugs. Everything works as it did before, only better.

In terms of losing functionality, it generally depends on the release. When a new ROM comes out as an alpha build it may well be missing a few things, which get worked out over time. If you read through the ROM thread there will be a detailed list of what works, what doesn't, etc. To avoid this, flash the more mature ROMs and you shouldn't be missing anything.
As the poster above mentioned though, you also need to unlock the bootloader before you flash a ROM. I would read the instructions carefully and educate yourself on the process before diving in. It's not particularly difficult, but it's very important to follow the directions to the letter. Don't skip steps, don't assume two things that seem similar really are the same etc. The boards are littered with people who ran into problems because they didn't take the time to understand what they are doing. For the record, I am on cleanROM 1.0 for Verizon and it's great. Good luck.

i agree completely with this, also OP i recommend if you want to overclock and tweak voltages you download perseus kernel. however if you dont want to mess with those setting then its not nessecary
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2048013
You're right to be concerned. You're getting new software, and with any new software there can be new bugs and/or regressions. Frankly, I don't mind taking 10 steps forward if on occasion it takes me 2 steps back. If you want to try a stable AOSP-style rom, I would suggest Bean's rom.
Make sure you backup your stock rom. You can flash every rom available and if you're not content with any of them just restore your stock backup. It will make your phone as it was before you flashed anything (homescreen set up, call log, texts, everything).

Porting ROMS?

Is there anyway to install or port ROMS from another variant to Spint? I am kinda new to android and wondering how difficult this would be.

Definitely will be on board with this idea man! Hopefully some devs point you in the right direction cause other variants like T - Mobile have a crap load of ROMs to choose from! Good luck!
Porting them is entirely possible and shouldn't be all that difficult in the grand scheme of things.
Would definitely start with one fairly close to stock for a first attempt. Avoid kernels ect.
A good way to learn would be to download a rom for a sprint phone and the rom you want to port.
Unzip both.
Copy one file at a time from the other rom to the sprint one.
Flash each time and see the changes.
Or if it doesn't work. You then need to go to the next level and look for difference between 2 files.
Rinse.
Repeat.
It usually ends up easier to build a rom yourself and just port individual features as needed.
You could also check out my rom in the development section minin3.
Would give you a good idea of what files are actually needed to run the phone. (It's been stripped of almost all useless features and bloat. Only the parts needed for everything to work correctly are there. Also has a removed file list and a list of extra files you could remove. I've had a working version under 500mb even.
You may want to remove boot.ing from my rom for testing (modified kernel with oc) though that kernel is for our phones and should be fine.
Should give some ideas anyway.
You'll find some things just work.
Others that hold carrier specifics are a bit more work.

Thanks mjcollum! Building a ROM seems very challenging but very rewarding at the same time. I am recently back on android for the first time since the original HTC Hero so I have a lot of catching up to do. Can you recommend somewhere where I can learn the basics of building? Also what are the chances that I would hard brick my phone? Kind of expensive to replace.
By the way you b ROM sounds awesome I was waiting for V4 to try it out.
THANKS AGAIN!

I would recommend looking in the development section at the diy mods.
Try and do things like getting hot spot working by editing the files yourself don't just flash the pre made hack.
There are good instructions there.
And a lot of support.
I don't want to say there's no chance of bricking your phone. Do make sure to make at least one full backup. But the chances of messing something up so bad you can't recover are VERY small. I can't think of anything you could be doing while trying this that could do it.
V4 hopefully out this weekend.
