Dis Phone be a hunk o' chit! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I am not sure what brain dead person came up with the phone and tested it, but I have had the phone for two weeks and have yet to have a call not drop. It drops me at home after any random period of time, it drops me at work, in the car. I don't think I have had any other phone drop a call in the past 6 or 7 years.
I am going to return it. Until Sprint and Samsung get their chit together on this one, it is a zero stars and I would not recommend it as a phone.
It is a kickass tablet though...but I kind of need a phone too.

You better not play the lotto. I think you just had some bad luck.
I've about 28HOURS worth of phone calls on mine with 0 drops.
I spend way too much time on conference calls...

That sucks that you are having those problems. I for one think this might possibly be the absolute best phone I have ever owned! I do not drop calls at all.

Could it be individual errors? Needing updates, factory reset, cache wipe, remove interfering apps, etc... My N3 is a beast! Best phone I've ever owned.

[Q] Banging my head on my desk over moral dilemma

I just can't freaking stand it.
Starting about three weeks ago I have been having major problems with my Streak doing spontaneous restarts. I tried everything. Nothing worked.
I went as far as to use the Wiki instructions to install a version one generation old on the phone so that it would do an over the air update to the current release, which it did. Didn't help. Whenever I used the phone for a long call or to play a game or use navigation, anything that kept it actually doing something for several minutes, it would start rebooting. Sometimes it would freeze to where I had to pull the battery. I even bought a disposable phone while on vacation so I could have something I could count on.
So last week I called Dell support and described what is going on. When the tech heard the symptoms and that I had already done a factory reset and fresh loads and more factory resets, he quickly decided to replace the phone.
I have had the phone since April 2011 and in May I dropped it in my living room. It has worked perfectly but does have a crack in the glass that is purely cosmetic and is not why I tried to get it replaced. The phone has worked perfectly until recently.
I'm banging my head on the desk because, wouldn't you know it, the phone has been working perfectly since I called in. We didn't do anything, just talked about the phone, and it has had one restart in the last week. As a test, I used the Navigator for the 30 mile commute home from work. My wife called me, the phone answered, worked flawlessly on speaker, and when she hung up the Navigator came right back up as smooth as you could ask for. The one game I play right now (Grave Defense) has worked flawlessly except for one restart in the middle of a game. I couldn't ask for the phone to be better.
So what do I do when the replacement arrives? I'm not sure if I trust the phone not to start screwing up again, but I'm going to be sending back a phone that is apparently working fine but has a cracked glass. We all know the entirely reasonable conclusion they will come to.
So what should I do?
Maybe you should call Dell and tell them that the screen is cracked. Find out if they will even take it back. They may not, and wind up charging you for the new one. I've not heard of them doing this, mind you, but it sounds possible.
They may just tell you to send in the old one anyway, but you may as well let them know that the screen is cracked, since they are going to find out when they get it. Hopefully since you already have a return authorization, it wont matter...
Has anyone noticed it seems to be easier to get a replacement since they EOL'd the Streak?
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
Maybe they're trying to clear out stock?
I had no problem sending it back with the cracked glass as long as the problem had nothing to do with the glass. Now the damned thing is working, so I have an issue with it.
I really don't understand this phone. I didn't change anything and it is like a different phone.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Oh, I thought the screen cracked after you called them.
Nevermind. As long as you disclosed the cracked screen, don't hesitate to send it back. If it was bad once, no reason to think it wont be again.
There are definitely some flaky ones.
From some posts I've read, it does seem as though they are being unusually friendly about returns lately. Prolly just my imagination...

Oh, I never said I did that. I don't want people to think they are knowingly taking back units with cracked screens. The tech didn't ask if it had ever been dropped and I didn't see the point in volunteering the information as it had nothing to do with the problem I was having. I know that is not exactly taking the high road, but as I said, the screen isn't why I'm exchanging it. I considered swapping my cracked screen and the unbroken one from the replacement and sending my flaky phone back with the good screen, but they would probably notice that the phone had been dismantled and assume that is the source of the problem. I'm between a rock and a hard place here, but it's my own fault. I'm probably going to end up with a bill for the replacement phone, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
I'm mostly just astonished at how freaking strange the behavior of this phone is. It was working fine then lost its mind for about three weeks and then decided that it was going to start working the way it is supposed to again with no interference from me. It was flaky in the morning, I did nothing to it, and that afternoon it started behaving itself.
Well, it froze up good yesterday. Tried everything short of swinging a dead cat over my head in a cemetary at midnight and got it working again, just in time to retire it.
When I got home the replacement was waiting for me. Smooth as silk. I played the hell out of my new favorite time sucking game last night (Stupid Zombies) and not a single hiccup. I'd love to lose some of the extra apps, but I think I am going to leave well enough alone this time. Now I need to find out how much Dell is going to bill me for returning a unit with a cracked screen, but I'll worry about that when it happens.

If You Have An Overheating / Bootlooping Phone ...

If You Have An Overheating / Bootlooping Phone can you please post what you were doing and the hardware revision number and manufacturing date?
This is actually a two-fold question, one of which is ... what is the best way to test a new Rezound to see if it will superheat or bootloop. The other part, and the one my other thread got too off topic to be useful for, is to collect manufacture dates in hopes of figuring this out.
To get your phone manufacture date:
1. Dial ##7764726
2. Hit call
3. Insert 000000 for password
4. Hit Display Grouping
5. Manufacture Date Code is what you need there
lol oh man, just buy one already
Jay
Oh Jay ... you can swap yours out anytime you lucky dog Verizon telesales told me I should buy in-store because that will save 1-2 days for each swap. So be it ... but I need to figure out fast if it will bootloop or overheat or not. Hence the thread.
i can't swap mine out ever lol i'm over my 14 day return period, and i bought it from corporate because i didn't wanna wait at my store
and dude, i really tihnk it's just bad quality control...mine has light leakage, and i have 1 speck of dust under my screen that i never notice....but i've never overheat, i get like 16 hours battery life, i use it ALL the time, i never bootloop, i never crash, i've gotten only 1 force close on some aftermarket app....and i've had it since day 1 (nov 14)..idk man.

agreed, haven't reset my phone in a week and no problems. Best android phone I've had.

Only overheats when playing graphic intense 3D games.
No bootlooping, dust under screen or anything else (unless you count a bad charging cable as an issue, which is being replaced)

I played wind up knight for an hour and didn't have any over heating issues. Yeah it was a little warm but it wasn't abnormal. Just take a deep breath and relax. Try to enjoy a new purchase and take the science out of it
My respond reach a temperature of 128 degrees, but I attributed this to a conflict between htc's task killa and juice defender,While plug in. Also had a boot loop that couldn't be fix by a battery pull. Had to boot in to the factory boot loader, and do a hard reset. Thats it. This phone isv awesome nexus galaxy blaah.

I notice when I play on-line poker my phone heats up to 100-110 degrees or so. Never resets but does get a little warn. I have a crappy LG ally that I used for wifi only and play on-line poker on it and it doesn't heat up. Either it's the active 4g connection or something to do with the Rezound. I don't think my thunderbolt would heat up either on 4g.
Mine was getting real hot. It would feel like it was burning my leg when I had it in my pocket. The battery would drain in around 4 hours or less and the extended battery in around 6 hours. I was with in my 14 days so I exchanged it for another one. I will see how this one does. The first one was fine the first couple of days and I picked it up off the tablet on the 3rd day it was really hot. I just got the new one late yesterday afternoon and charged it. So I will see how the battery does today.

[Q] Advice: Replacement Phone for Oveheating and Battery Life Issues

I'll try to make this brief. I bought my phone back in early December. I've had overheating and battery issues from day 1.
Overheating: My phone will constantly get to the "overheat" status through normal usage (not on charger) when I'm on the phone or just browsing the Internet. It gets hot.
Battery life: I understand that smartphones don't have great battery life. I've owned a lot of them. I sometimes unplug at 6:30 AM and end up in the red zone at 3-4 PM. It just sits on my desk. Sometimes I don't even use the phone for anything. This is unacceptable standby time.
I went through the troubleshooting process with Verizon (new battery and charger) and now they are sending me out a replacement phone.
1: I want a new phone, not a replacement. What am I doing wrong? Why won't they give me this?
2: I also asked for a different model phone (Nexus for example, but anything really) and they won't work with me on that either.
Advice?
1. What do you mean, a new phone? They don't send out "new" phones, ever. They send out CLNRs.
2. They won't give you a Nexus. Period. They'll give you something else, but only if you've been through a lot of phones.

Thanks. That answers all my questions actually. I would of expected more from them since I bought the phone brand new recently and switched from Sprint just to get the phone, but whatever. Anyone else have different advice?
FWIW: I just had to get a Certified Like-New Device....
It is hands down better than my original... and I thought my original was good! this ones got the really red soft keys... no dead pixels...
you could get lucky too..

The only time you can return a new phone for a different new phone is during the initial trial period (which is I believe 14 days now) and when you do that you will have to pay a restocking fee. After that period you will only get Certified Like New Refurbished phones. Welcome to the world of Verizon. LOL

Thanks. That gives me hope. This phone sucks.
Yeah no new phones outside of 14 days. My best Inc2 was a CLNR because the rest had bad speakers or the ugly circle soft keys. CLNRs now a days are actually not as bad as they used to be. New shells and no look of damage. When I worked for AT&T they gave out phones lightly refurbished but still had small dings.
I went through 4 Rezounds within the 14 day period and finally have one that doesn't have pink keys or over heating issues. They were all brand new out of the box. They tried 3 in store and all had pink keys so I didn't even count those.
My keys have always looked a little pink in the right light. But in daytime, or for most of the time, they're pretty red. That's the color of the plastic that covers the LED. It's just not a solid red. They're all like that.
4g and other wireless activity overheats the phone (on your hands) because the cover is the antenna (something that gets really hot during this time).
If you download a 400mb file on 4g (at a high speed), the phone will overheat. Not just so it's 'hot'. But so hot that you can't touch it.
Un-ventilated phones are not yet ready for 4g. Either new, very cool battery and SoC technology needs to come around, or these phones need ventilation. Not going to happen any time soon, for either case.
If your phone flashes red/green alternating for the status light, it's really overheating. If it's just 'hot' to hold, it's not overheating.
Hot for a person is NOT hot for a phone, necessarily.
and to save battery (if you're really not touching it all day), turn off Internet (Mobile Network). Just make a widget, and turn it off on your homescreen. You can still call and text.
My phone will last 6-8 hours (since I have 3 email accounts, facebook, twitter, and everything else syncing at least periodically) with internet on.
With internet off, if I have very few texts and calls, 2 days is not a problem. The phone loses Between 1 and 2 % per hour, roughly, of battery.
Try turning internet off.
I also (at this point) got the extended 2750 battery ($45ish on amazon.com). The phone still fits in my HTC desk cradle (HTC planned ahead, it fits great) and is even more ergonomic in my hand. And the case doesn't 'creek' as much as the original.
70% more battery life = all day. Give it a shot.
Yes, green and orange alternating lights is what I got. And. Yes my lights are dark red. I've had 7 total phones, mixture of pink, light pink, fuschia, white/light pink, I've had a mixture of pink and a couple dark.. It's not as cut and dry as you think. Overheating and turning off is legitimate. I'm not saying "owie its warm in my fingers!"
i recently had a bionic. kept having issues with data dropping & weird clicking sound during calls. they confirmed the data drop was a known issue and replaced it twice. the 3rd time they tried sending me a thunderbolt and i got so pissed & threatened to cancel service. they then offered the rezound and even included the extended battery.
no headphones though(but i didnt like them anyway the 1st time i had them)
Nice. Saw the light and and came over. Love this phone it feels solid. Too bad it'll only be used for three months

Would this be enough for you to get a new EVO..?

Well I'm on my second EVO. My first one the screen seemed very vibrant, this one, not so much. I don't know if it's just me. My current one also has the light leak from the home button which bothers me when I see it but don't notice it otherwise. The last issue is rebooting or shutting off. I go commando with my evo (no case) as you know it's a slippery phone. My first evo fell a couple of times form about 3-4 feet, no biggie. I notice with this phone that everytime it gets hit a bit hard it turns off and you have to reboot it to start up again (power + volume down). Yesterday it slipped out of my hand while I was sitting at my desk and it must of fallen about 10-12 inches. Of course this is a refurbished phone.

Great insight, tell me more. Why even waste the time to post this?
you are right, ill tell you what you want to know.
" the phone probably has a loose cable inside of it, and should be replaced. you can either show a sprint rep in store by banging it hard on your hand or calling the insurance and telling them its a faulty replacement, i had a similar issue with a display that would flicker in and out at times as if it was off. "
Thank you for your reply. Maybe I worded my question weirdly. I was just asking if the issues that I stated would be enough for you to go exchange the phone. I know I can get a new one, no big deal. Everyone is a bit different on their tolerance of issues.
When you go in pick the weakest or dumbest looking rep and be forceful about what you want. tell them you KNOW the problem and it shouldnt be happening. i got my phone replaced recently due to a graphic flicker when playing games. they didnt want to exchange it at first but i won in the end. because i KNOW cellphones and how they should work
Did you get a new phone or a refurbished phone? I know the reps at the Sprint store by my house, they'll give me a new (to me, but still refurbished) phone. Just wondering if it's even worth it since my issues are minimal.

Google Stepped up for me (battery shut off issue)

Had a launch Nexus 6p that I bought from the google store, I never purchase extended warranties and have never needed one since every device I've ever owned since my Treo 650 has lasted well beyond its useful life but was still perfectly functional. Hell, I still have a S3 rocking for my kid and it works fine all these years later.
A few months ago I started having the 15% shut off error. Noticed it, wasn't a huge deal because I rarely use the device that low. Few days ago it started getting progressively worse and now the device will turn off between 30-50% depending on the day. Obviously this isn't ideal.
Never had a device do that, ever. Was pretty disappointed actually as this is an obvious hardware issue and was contemplating skipping on Nexus / Pixel devices in the future, heck was even thinking of having an affair with an IPhone for a bit. It had been a long time (since the 3g) and sometimes change is good. The 6p and 5x have had a number of issues, enough that there are class action suits floating around.
Anyway, I wasn't going to call Google. I mean this device was well past warranty, no extended was purchased so why bother calling right? Well I got a wild hair and decided to do just that. Setup a return call and a minute later had someone calling me back.
Explained the issue, told him I wasn't sure if there was anything they could recommend or do but wanted to check. 5 minutes later he is sending me the email for RMA and new device.
Now technically Google didn't have to anything. I know that, I'm appreciative of their efforts to keep me happy. I never asked for nor demanded a replacement, it was offered and for that I am very grateful. I'm not sure if the class action lawsuits over 5x and 6p issues are causing them to be extra cautious, I don't know if this is really par for the course with them. I've never had issues in the past and hope I never do in the future.
Obviously it is preferable for the user to not have to deal with this crap but how a company responds to these issues is important. Easy to sing praise at a company for developing the perfect device that lasts you 4 years when most probably dump it in 2. Harder when the POS you bought is starting to die 14 months in and on hospice at 16 months and the issues are severe enough that class action is talked about. Either way, Google deserves some credit for stepping up to the plate when they didn't have to. I'm a happy user.
I can't say this will occur for everyone with the same issue. What I will say is that if you're out of warranty, don't let that keep you from calling and talking about the issue.
Thank you Google and the Google support staff. Service like that will keep me in Pixels and whatever from the google store forever.
I may try this soon because mine is doing the same thing...
I had the same issue on my XL.... shutting off with no warning after 2-4 hours at about 40-50%, yet I could boot into recovery and stay there until at least 20%. So had accelerated battery loss and an early shutoff.
Bought it open-box off Swappa, so had no Google receipt, but on a whim, opened a support issue (text) from my 6P, which worked fine. I was offered an exchange no-problem. I chose to send in my phone first and had the replacement in less than a week.
FWIW, I think my issue started when I flashed May update and charged it after using a QC 2.0 charger. I usually use a Qi charger and charge it overnight.
I had exactly the same, well outside the standard 1 year warranty. Used the online agent chat to explain the early shut off problem. They instantly suggested an RMA, I didn't have to beg or ask for a replacement. I Ended up getting a brand new phone in its retail box. I saw someone else in another thread say Google offered a full money refund as they didn't have a like for like replacement available. Well done Google!
I got a refurb.
That's awesome to hear. I think they're taking the bad press very seriously.
that was nice of them !
happy for you , btw. i quite often read about this issue from users.
but how exactly does it power off??
does it shut down by its own? like a complete shutdown?

Yup, just shuts down. If you try and reboot it is as if you are at 1%. Before shutting down it will show 15% or 30% left on the battery and then boom shutting down.

Me too. I have another 5 months with Nexus Protect.
Refurb came in today and what a total POS. Shuts off randomly from 30 seconds to 20 minutes. You can see the battery % getting all crazy from 93% to 73% to 83% then boom off. Going to call google tomorrow to let them know. Stupid thing died half a dozen times between setup and the apps finishing to download. They must have absolutely zero quality control over at their refurb center.
This will be my last Huwei device and my wife won't buy another LG product either. They really screwed the pooch on that device gen.
Giving me a full refund. Just have to send in both devices.
Mod please feel free to merge the two threads I looked on the first page and saw nothing when I posted.

I love Google. They just took my word that I'd tried everything and couldn't sort it and sent a refurbished phone. It works perfectly and I love it! Now and then when you call you get the odd person who is hard to talk to but that is usually someone in an Indian call centre that doesn't really understand my problem. It took under a week for me. It can take up to two weeks but you should really get it within 5 working days.
I have the same horrible battery issue and am speaking to Google now. Do you think I should mention that I also have a cracked screen (but this is not why I am trying to get a replacement at all)? Or do you think I should say nothing and they wont have an issue still replacing it when I send it in?
EDIT: Nevermind, I mentioned it to the support person and assured him that it was not the reason for wanting a replacement and he said they cannot make the same exception anymore, but if I wanted, they could send me an advance refurb but then they'd bill me for the screen which would not be covered. He is having trouble telling me the screen cost though first...
Not sure if it's worth that for just a refurb at this point. POS phone. I told him I'll hold off for now.
I didn't opt for the "advanced" replacement (where they ship a phone first and charge my CC), yet they appeared to have shipped my refurb shortly after I shipped mine. I got my refurb about 3 business days after shipping mine and confirmation about 5 days after I had my phone that they had received my defective one. My refurb looked great (as did my defective phone)
Talked to support on chat and they took care of me (even though i didn't have a warranty and my phone is 2 years old) as a one time courtesy. Google customer service is pretty awesome! phone will be here within a few days. ?
google took care of me as well. my replacement will be in tomorrow. I have had my 6p since launch. only swapped out because of the obvious battery issue.
I'm facing the battery issue too, but the problem is that I live in Brazil and the 6P wasn't officially released here. I bought mine during a trip to US last year. I was thinking about buy a battery and try to replace it by myself but I'm afraid of shatter the camera glass during the disassemble.
So here is my question: how long is taking in average to get the refurb (in advance)? I'll be in Round Rock (near Austin) for a whole week next month but I'm not sure if it's enough time to do this exchange.
