Looking to root my MK2 S4 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I have been looking all over the place these last couple of days and have been finding no real help. I have stock MK2 on my Verizon S4 and have successfully got Saferoot on my phone and when running a root checker it says I have root access. Problem being I am trying to get Clockwork recovery on my phone and then flash to CM11 so I can have 4.4. I have tried using Odin but it fails every time and anything over Odin 3 also will not see my device. I have like 20 tabs open on my computer looking and trying everything I can and I am now lost as what to try next. Has anyone successfully got this to work on MK2 and able to walk me through exactly what I need to do? I need to get this on my phone because everything keeps freezing and crashing and I miss having a custom ROM on my phone. Please help

Pretty sure you can't install a recovery on MK2. You can run safestrap ROM's only.

Last I knew, you cannot install aosp roms unless you have an unlocked bootloader. This means that you don't need safestrap. You would have to be on MDK build, not the latest mk2 build. You will not be able to flash cwm or twrp unless you have a loki'd phone. The safestrap recovery only allows flashing touchwiz roms or the Google edition rom as far as I'm aware of

Sombody correct me if I'm wrong. The way I understand it is if you are on mk2 the only recovery that works is Safestrap. And you can flash only TW based ROMs.

As it's been said in dozens of postings. ..no cm..no asop. Only TW based stock base. Only thru safestrap. And right now hd11.

If you want an AOSP look and feel, check out Eclipse: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351840
There isn't a fully stable MK2 build yet, but there's a public beta that apparently works very well: http://www.elementalxdesigns.com/ec...-4-3-MK2-MDK-users-Progress-Build06-(12-23-13)
As others have said, Hyperdrive is also very good. I put it on my mom's phone and she's quite pleased with it; personally I really dislike the TW styling, but it's excellent if you can get past that.

I am getting so burnt out searching everywhere for answers so I'll just ask straight up. Am I able to get 4.4 with hyperdrive yet and is HD my only option? If it is what version do I need (a link would be nice). If I use HD do I just go to recovery mode and do a wipe/clear and then install the ROM from zip? If I could just get some clear cut answers that would be awesome, my eyes are getting tired from all the reading about this...

No you cannot get any 4.4 rom. Mk2 is 4.3 as is the only stable rom for us on safestrap. Go to the development section and read through the safestrap thread. If you have a specific question after thoroughly reading up on it I'm sure many will be happy to answer, but you will be hard pressed to find someone to rewrite the installation instructions/warnings/etc that are posted in the safestrap thread.
This thread outlines the process in some detail (yet is for updating first, steps you would obviously ignore).

Yes, thanks. Wish it was an oversight but it's not rooted. Using Root Checker by Joeykrim, it reports device is not rooted. Also downloaded terminal emulator and checked at prompt on phone.

The "device not found" stuff is weird. What it means is that your phone dropped the USB connection while in the middle of rooting.\
I've been spending a lot of time tonight re-flashing my phone and tweaking the saferoot script. Give it another try and post in that thread.

Fixed by reflashing stock MK2 from Kies.

[Q] HELP!!!

I updated my vibrant to 2.2 used kies, and then I rooted it. I don't remember how exactly, it was a few months ago.
Now, I would like to remove the root. I've looked all over the internet.. and all I see is How To's for 2.1, I did find 1 thread however said use use like odin or something like that. I'm not super good at this whole rooting, recovery, adb.. IDK what most of those even mean. Please help!
Can someone please help me ASAP. This is really interfering with my work.

if anyone knows what I can do to solve my problem.. please help... this is KILLING ME!
Go into download mode:
power off phone
pull out battery
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
make sure u put the proper .pit and .pda file in there proper places on odin and ur set to go.
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers
Then odin back to stock and u should be unrooted and on 2.1
Also, to get the latest odin and files that are known to work, you should download the AIO Vibrant Toolbox, its a pretty handy tool, it have all the steps you need to follow to go back to stock.

No root access after installing CF-Root

Hi,
I am trying to root my SGS2 and I haven't rooted a phone before. I am using CF-Root and have followed the instructions on:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
That all seemed to work and when I boot my phone I get the yellow triangle, etc. But, according to Root Checker my phone isn't rooted and if I try to run an app that requires root then it doesn't work.
Do I need to do anything other than flashing the CF-Root tar in Odin to root the phone?
I used the following kernel (my phone was previously using LPC so I assume this is correct):
CF-Root-SGS2_BU_VOD_LPC-v5.4-CWM5.zip
I have searched and can't find any answers so hopefully someone here can help.
Thanks,
Jon
flash the same again an this time ull b rooted
as rock23 said reflashing should solve that issue. If you are missing the SU specifically. Then you can install it from the market.
Thanks for the quick replies. I flashed again but it's still not working. Just in case it helps, I flashed a third time but still no luck. Odin seems to run properly and reports success. But Root Checker says:
Superuser: Not found
Busybox: Not found
Su location: Not found
Sudo location: Not found
And if I ran an app that needs root then I am not prompted to allow it, etc, and the app doesn't work. Any suggestions for what I should try?
Install su frm market and update it if not.c an post

Sorry, I might be misunderstanding this, but I can't find su on the market. There are apps like superuser, etc, but I can't find anything that delivers su. Shouldn't that have come with CF-Root or do I install it from somewhere else?

Install super user from here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su&feature=search_result
Thanks. I have now installed super user but 'su' is still missing.
In super user preferences it says "Su binary vnull" so I tapped that to get an update. Super user says "New version of su binary found" and I click "Update" but that fails with the error "Failed to find currently installed su binary".
I can't see how I get this su binary.
Flash a different CF root firmware .
Ignore root checker .
Reboot and you should have CWM apk open that and if it works check recovery works .
jje
Thanks, I think I'll have to try a different CF Root kernel because the one that's meant to be for my Kernel definitely isn't installing some of the things that I think it should.

I dont thik you have to flash different again,
have you opened atleast once the Supe SU application, there is a binary updatin, at your first opening, may be alright after that and a reboot.
I am currently using LPC cf-root on my LP8 rom without any treble....
The weird thing is that I couldn't even find SuperSU on the phone after flashing with CF-Root...I definitely had an insecure kernel but the other things needed for root didn't seem to be there (or at least didn't work). I gave up with CF-Root and tried the root method described on the following link and that worked first time (although wifi then broke until I changed to a static IP):

I had this problem. No superuser installed after flashing. Couldn't update su binary with superuser. Here is how do you solve this issue:
1) install superuser from market
2) flash manually su binary with cwm http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/su-bin-3.0.3.2-efghi-signed.zip
3) open superuser go through prefences and check updates if any.

Looks like you are in store for a full system restore to the original stock image. You can try the recovery image from my signature to get rid of the TWRP recovery if you want. Just place the recovery file in the PDA box and start.
So, is that why I am getting that message when I am trying to root my phone again?

While I don't know the specifics of the exploit, it sounds like it was unable to push files to the device. Is your USB Debugging enabled prior to running the exploit?

Ok..I will try that one...I also have a note 2, but the software is 4.3 .. I know the bootloader is locked on this one. But if I can use saferoot to root it and than load safestrap to load custom roms on it? From what I read you cant put safestrap on the note 2 with 4.3 but i read somewhere that you can put safestrap on here since I still have the 4.2.2 ....Thank you for the help so far..

You have got to be pretty careful, since there's lots of variants of these models. For example, there's at least 6 incompatible models of the Samsung Galaxy S4 (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, International (a couple of models as far as I can tell) the "L" variant, etc.
Following directions for a "Galaxy S4" without knowing if it's the same variant as yours can lead to bricks.
People have successfully used Saferoot to root Note 2 with the MK7 build. Then you'll have to research if Safestrap works - it's likely if you're running 4.3, but I have no idea. Do the research before you flash.

What kind of phone do you have? I assume an i545 given that this is the Verizon GS4 forum, but it's worth asking.
If the phone did not reboot, then it's probably rooted but no busybox installed, but that's OK. Just install it from the play store.
Or, you can just re-root, and provide a bit more detail on what happened.
Yeah like @k1mu just said post more info, specifically what the output of the adb script says. Also if you dont get a SuperSu prompt after the script finishes. Then try typing su into terminal or adb shell and tell us what it says

I may try and reroot it and see what happens...its hard to explain but it was at the part where it was telling me my phone was going to reboot and to unlock it and press any key when it does..I waited and the phone didnt reboot
... I just did it again and it looked like it worked...I kept seeing the popup that ADB shell has been granted superuser permissions....it said all done and the command prompt closed..

I typed SU into terminal emulater and a window popped up asking for super user permissions and I granted them and Im at the [email protected] with a # sign...so Im assuming the # sign at the prompt also means that I gained root...
I did make sure I was using the right software..I was aware of the build # and I made sure I was trying the right stuff..From what I read safestrap should work using the 4.2.2 android version..with the ME7 build that I have...
I have been all over this site the last 3 days since I got into this when I should be studying for my networking certifications...lol...Thanks for all the help so far..I really appreciate it guys..

[Q] adb shell access

Hi guys,
I'm new here and this is my first thread, so I hope I've chosen the correct section for my issue.
I have a sony ericsson xperia x10 mini pro and wanted to gain root access. I managed it so far and made some manipulations within the /system/ directory and due to some mental black-out I made a 'chmod 700 /system/' which now causes my device to fail on each boot. Also just connecting my phone with a computer gives the output of the white sony ericsson label followed by a rebooting, without showing the battary loading screen.
Using adb I have only a few seconds of access to the device and I wanted to change the rights of /system/ to some reasonable values. Unfortunately running 'adb shell' gives:
- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: Permission denied (13) -
so I downloaded adb plus some other stuff following this description android.serverbox.ch/?p=1217. I replaced each and every occurance of /system/bin/sh to /bin/sh in order to call a different shell which I might have read access but still the same error as above occurs, also stating /system/bin/sh instead of /bin/sh.
Does somebody of you have an idea on how I can gain access and change the permissions or how I can completely reset the phone?
Thanks and cheers
I'm not familiar with Sony devices but most OEMS have some way of flashing stock firmware/software to the device such as with fastboot or a flash tool. If Sony has such method and has a package specific to your device this would probably be the best way.
Otherwise I assume you were rooted or you wouldn't have been able to change permissions to /system so can you boot to a custom recovery and then just flash a new ROM or fix permissions there

Go to the recovery then do a fix permissions in recovery. Or flash a new rom. Or use flash tools to install stock images again.

Thats nearly impossible.. Install your drivers.
Despite all this you can use flash tools to flash stock back again.
If you're using Linux type lsusb in the terminal and see if you see your device

I would recommend checking out this guide, specially step 8-15 of this guide which will instruct you how to properly setup fastboot and the required drivers on your Sony device. Also I would recommend taking a look at this guide on how to boot your device into fastboot mode through the button combination. Let me know if you still have questions.
I tried to flash my mobile, using flash tool (from here: chip.de/downloads/Xperia-Flash-Tool_65533558.html) and now my mobile does not do anything anymore. So I guess this thread can be closed, except anyone has an idea what I can do now.
