Rooted GPe and Tablet Mode - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

I was wondering if anyone with a GPe edition of the xzu had gotten it rooted and modifed the build.prop so that could put it into tablet mode.

Not sure I just ordered mine but I'm waiting so we both are in the same boat

Yes, the GPe is rooted and yes you can kick it into tablet mode.

This is what I have been waiting for! I recently picked up my gTab plus 7.0, and I love apps in tablet mode, and I just felt it ashame that such a great device would be stuck with the phone mode version of many apps on that huge 6.44 display.

i think ill just wait for a better method i want to be able to back up my TA partition so that i can relock my bootloader if i needed to

You can. Downgrade to 532, root, backup TA, update to 290 and'root again. I'm skipping a couple of steps now, but you'll get it.

Hey, ho.. It's/was new years eve when i wrote that (i.e drunk). Do you have a GPe or Xperia ZU? If you have a GPe, yes, you can root it, and if you have an Xperia Z Ultra (stock Sony), yes you can root it.

Hello world! New Ultra Z owner (coming from Note 2)

Hi all!
Tomorrow I will receive my new phone and send away my beloved Note 2.
I have loved the note series but I was too pissed off with Samsung shying away from 6" and giving us a measly .18" display increase on the Note 3 so I decided to try something else.
I have been reading a lot and learning about accessories for the phone etc. And of course ready to root and try a ROM and OCing righaway.
So just wanted to say hi to my new community!

Nay, you need root to install recovery, but you can use recovery without unlocking your bootloader. You can't flash custom ROMs (CM/Omni/PA/modified stock) without unlocking it though.

I saw in development a rom for locked and unlocked boot loader. Are you sure?
Funny cause I read something like that too and is very confusing coming from the Samsung world so I guess I need to relearn things again

Well, since you mentioned it, i'm not that sure anymore. If it's possible to flash a modified stock ROM with a locked bootloader, it doesn't include AOSP ROMs, since i know that you must have an unlocked bootloader to flash those because of signatures etc.
(Feel free to correct me, people!)

To elaborate, you can't use custom kernels with locked bootloaders. The signatures mismatch and thus, the ROM doesn't work. That includes AOSP kernels obviously.
Unlocked bootloaders don't check the kernel signature and thus, you can use custom kernels. ROMs have nothing to do with it. The 'custom' ROM being mentioned uses a stock kernel, so it can run on both LB and UB.
Basically,
Locked ---> Stock kernel from Sony only.
Unlocked ---> All kernels.

I too have come to the X Z U from a SG Note2. I had been contemplating the note3 but the region locking killed that idea.
Now the Note 2 seems ordinary size, and smaller phones like toys! And the XZU is definitely faster than the Note 2, even though the latter never felt slow.

I've got an interesting question. Once Kitkat has been officially released by Sony, would obtaining root be fairly easy?
Or would it be a mission like on current 4.3 firmwares where we have to downgrade, root, flash, etc?
I'm still on 4.2 and will not bother upgrading until Kitkat has been released and obtaining root is done by a one click procedure.
If anything it'll be harder to root
And you would more then likely have to downgrade etc

What Jack said
There is a slight conflict here, you want an easy root path, but you want a secure phone that no one can hijack. If there is a one click root tool then there can just as easily be a 'no click' root exploit that you dont even know has been un on your phone and the writer/hacker now has full control of your phone - see the problem?
The way Sony wants us to do it (and the best security model for us and them) is to unlock the bootloader and install recovery to flash our phones - this is what we do now except we do the extra steps of running a root exploit so we can latter restore our bootloader/TA to a factory state

I understand. What you said makes sense. I previously used Vroot to root previously like most others but after hearing rumours that were apparently true, I no longer used it. As you mentioned they may be stealing our imei numbers and taking control over our phones violating our privacy...
Since Kitkat 4.4 is around the corner, I won't bother updating to 290 Firmware. Who knows, we may need to downgrade and flash to root Kitkat.
As long as we have an unlocked bootloader root is easy
hmmm.i remembered that when the nexus 5 came in..they got it rooted fast.since the software securities of 4.4 is almost(if not the same) with 4.3..but who am i to say..im just a simple guy passing through... but hey, we already have a working kitkat rom for ZU..so why wait? *smiling

You're the second swede in here that haven't received 4.3, and since both Norway and Denmark received it a month ago, I'll conclude that Sony hates Sweden Sony and Ericsson did break up after all, so I guess Sony doesn't want to go back there and risk bumping into Ericsson. Awkward.
I assume you've checked PCC for the update, and that you haven't changed your CDA to a country that haven't received the update (a mistake I did).

I have thought about it but dont have a GPe to play with, should be easy enough to make the ROMs with @DooMLoRD's kernel?
And I think at the moment it could only be a 4.4 based rom? or would the underlying system boot a 4.3 rom?
IF you did flash a ZU rom on to a GPe I dont think that there is an easy root back to pure GPe at the moment as there are no FTFs?, and I think I heard someone say that the GPe uses something different?
Lots of questions...

I know. Been looking for the update daily for about a week now. Nothing.
I dont really mind though.......I have an occasional wifi drop out on 290 but nothing else serious. Also with my ZU I have held back on root/unlocking bootloader just because............it kinda does everything well without root! I remember a video by Adrian that eventually android would get to such a stage that root wouldn't be needed anymore (apart from customization). Maybe we are seeing the first step of that with sonys firmware? Obviously touchwiz, sense etc are different but Sony is pretty close to stock.

Wow you unlocked your bootloader? so that means you will never be able to update it through PC Companion or OTA. You will have to re-lock the bootloader but it won't restore your TA partition. and the camera will not perform well under the low-light.

Camera is great under low light so far. Updating via flashtool is hardly a bother either. As far as I've read no one knows exactly the ramifications of unlocking the Z2 bootloader, only speculation based on the Z and Z1. I definitely don't see any problem with the camera and I had always turned off the Bravia Engine anyway.
