Guess some of it might depend on what ROM you want to upgrade to and what OS you run on your PC...
Edit to update for proper model of OP:::

I'd just like to go to something like gingerbread or even jelly bean just something newer lol I have no clue about this just what I've been reading lol

let's set a couple things straight..
first off, all the updates for the Verizon Fascinate (i500) were done through OTA. nothing was done through Kies.
What model do you have? there's the fascinate, mesmerize, showcase, and the telus fascinate (which is more like an i9000, or galaxysmtd)
also, i believe all of the i500 variants have official Gingerbread of some sort. the verizon fascinate has 2.3.5 which you can get through an OTA or through Odining
but what do you want to update to? do you want to delve into custom ROMs (unofficial firmware, that's how you can get Jellybean running on this phone)? or do you just want to play it safe and go official?

[Q] Telus has now removed 2.3.3 for fascinate...

Anyone happen to know, or even a guess why telus would remove the GB update from their site. I've read about people have various problems with the updating, but from what I read, those problems were PC related.
Mine worked just fine.
I also have a question... is it possible to dump a stock rom and/or radio and/or kernel without having root?
Thx
Maniac
Can anyone confirm if this is true?
That is sort of strange. Im glad I was able to get it in time. And rooted too
People were losing SD cards on telus also.

Can anyone tell me how I can rip the rom, cause I've tried the method found on these forums for the fascinate for froyo, but when I tried to odin it back it didn't work.
So right now I'm almost afraid to shut the phone off just in case I can't boot and I have no way to get it back to stock GB.
Mainly what I want to do is make a factory image that I can put somewhere for others to download it. Cause I want to try some things but I can't until telus puts the update up again.

I think Telus was getting all kinds of questions on when it would be available when they had no control over it - so they made a generic upgrade page.
I just tried with Kies and I got GingerBread BUT I'm also staring a long time at a galaxy S screen - lost my clockwork mod recovery as well (back to stock 3E).
Hmmmm - anyone know if this update is still available online somewhere as I have no OTA to get it and of course as the thread says... TELUS has pulled it.

I'm pretty sure to upgrade through the Samsung Kies software, you will have to remove any mods / hacks that you made to your phone.
Best option probably is to flash everything back to Stock, which I did. Then had no problem updating via Kies:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=923712
Alright I'll give that a shot tonight, the only 'mod' I have done would be rooting the phone - other than that it is stock at this time.
I guess the one thing I really shouldve mentioned in my first reply is I have the Fascinate 4G with TELUS, is the update specific to the 3G+?

Oh wait! If you have the Fascinate 4G+ (T959P) then you may not want to flash everything back to 2.2.
I'm not 100% sure that it may work with 4G Fascinate.
Can anyone validate the following steps will work on his Fascinate 4G+ ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=923712
They are different phones. If you could get the 3G+ file to flash at all (which I doubt), it would almost certainly semi brick the phone. There is an update section on telus website for fascinate 4G (just below the 3G+ entry) (no update available today). When you see the update available there, you're good to go.
I have the 4g and I won't flash anything made for the 3g. Two different phones. I remember reading a thread about people bricking the 4g while trying to put 3g stuff on it.

[Q] Not sure how to downgrade Galaxy S from ICS to GB

Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S GT-I9000 (Bell Vibrant, I believe) and he has this version of ICS installed on it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1649345&page=12
I want to downgrade to Cyanogenmod 7 simply to get a bit more performance out of the phone. But, i'm not sure exactly what I have to do, to accomplish this.
Android Version 4.0.4
Baseband: i9000UGKG3
Kernel 3.0.8-Semaphore_ICS_1.2.2
Build Number GT-i9000 4.0.4 IMM761
Mod Version ICS_F4k_MOD_V4.0.4_r3
Do I have to find and install a new kernel? The one I have says ICS, but i'm not sure if that will work for Gingerbread too or not.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
WEll, to makes things worse, I followed the advice of someone from this forum http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...n-mod-on-phone-that-is-already-rooted-at-404/ and now my phone is stuck in a boot loop.
Crap, now i'm not sure what to do.
Flash a firmware with 3 files PDA, MODEM and CSC using ODIN. If you don't have a firmware with 3 files, download this http://androidadvices.com/valuepack-update-samsung-galaxy-face-unlock-i9000-xxjvu-236/3/ and then update to a newer firmware like JW4 or JW5.
Ok, just to clarify something before i do this. my galaxy S is the international one, not the T-mobile vibrant, will this guide work fine for mine?
Thanks,

Thanks, I flashed over the all the files and was greated by the default Gingerbread theme. Flashed over to Cyanogenmod from there with no issues.
Thanks again, worked great.
Sorry to hijack a thread, but can this be done on a Moto Droid Razr?
I did the OTA update to ICS, and can't stand it. Want to go back to GB.
Any options? Or is this being worked on?
Thanks in advance.

Just bought S3 and want to ROOT and install OTA 4.1.2, possible?

Hi Guys,
I just bought a new Galaxy S3 here in New Zealand and before I start using it, I want to update it to the latest version, I believe 4.1.2 and then root it, can this be done? whats the best option for me? I see the Galaxy Toolkit to do the rooting, is this the most popular/best ?
Also after rooted, can I still do the OTA updates or will I have to flash custom roms?

If 4.1.2 was not yet launched in NZ, then you will not get any update for your phone at the moment.
What you could do is, root your phone and then install the 4.1.2 version (Poland)(root is not required for flashing though). For rooting refer to the stickies in general section. Popular methods are CF-Root 6.4 (incl. CWM as recovery) or CF-Auto-Root (keeps stock recovery) (both can be found in dev. section).
After rooting you will not be able to get OTA updates though, whereas KIES should still work (but you will loose root if you update).
In addition, make sure to read all the stickies and guides for rooting before you touch anything! Especially the EFS backup procedure.
I hope it helps.
Rooting your phone voids it from getting OTA updates.

As said above 4.1.2 is still not available in NZ. So you can flash other ones (like Poland) if needed.

After rooting OTA updates will not work. But you can still get the firmware and flash them through Odin. This will remove root and will have to go through the rooting procedure again.
I feel samsung will release 4.1.2 for other regions soon and my suggestion would be to wait for that and then go ahead with rooting
You don't need to root your phone to install an official firmware!

Thanks guys yeah 4.1.2 does not look like its been released yet, I'll wait for it to come out then root cheers!
I used to wait for offical releases, then realised there was no need - the custom ROMs are far better than the official and much faster at new releases than regional Samsung rollout. They also get rid of the battery sapping bling most people only use the once.
If you are going to root anyhow, then the warranty isn't a concern.
Just had bad experiences with 3rd-party ROM's. Had a Desire Z and ran about 5 different roms, cyanogen, gingerbread and ICS variants, mimcry, ilwt, extreme mod, and none of them seemed to run very well after a few weeks of use. The stock ROM on this galaxy is flying like no tomorrow! especially after simply disabling the garbage apps

I'll admit that Samsung could teach HTC quite a few things about writing a good ROM, I'm sticking with customs of the stock jb 4.1.2 for now as it all works so well and saves me having to remember what needs disabling. I tried a few minimalist roms before sticking with the viking one.
I've got a 4.1.2 in NZ but that's because my phone bricked and they updated it when fixing it(4.1.2 supposed to have the fix for bricking)

3G missing Droidtheory rom.

I am new to installing ROMs and i have just finished installing ABSYM 1.0 on my droid razr. the razr is flashed to cricket wireless and is using gingerbread 2.3.6. i used safestrap to install the new rom, and 3g isnt working. the 3g is working just fine on my "unsafe rom" i pay $55 a month, and would like to use the safe rom as my primary rom. If there is a fix to the 3g issue. and if possible, mms... please post here! all suggestions will help.
If possible, post links as to where i can get updated for Droidthory's ROM - ABSYM v1.0. the links on droidrazr site aren't available anymore.
I was told by a friend that the 1.1 update fixes it. please help me find a link to the update
Thanks
You should do yourself a favor and upgrade to the ICS kernel, no one (tmk) is developing for GB anymore.

I believe you will have to flash stock GB back if you want to upgrade to ICS (and possibly JB, if you have a XT912) without hassles.
I suggest giving this thread a good read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840296
Look into the OTA sections for hassle-free upgrading.
That is, of course, assuming you have already tried going into the "About Phone" section and checked for updates to no avail.

[Q] Upgrading my S4 still running 4.2.2 while keeping root

Hi everyone! I need some help updating my S4. I rooted it awhile back and I'm very much of the mindset of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," so since it was doing everything I wanted, I've just left it alone and kept dismissing the prompt to install the OTA update. Now I'm having some issues and want some features of the newer versions of Android, so I was looking around for the best way to update it while keeping my root access. All the guides I can find, however, talk about upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4 or 4.2 to 4.3. So I was wondering...
1. What version should I update to? On my last phone, a Droid Bionic, one of the big Android version updates ran so horribly on it that I ended up getting a new phone. Because of that, I'm very nervous about updating my phone and having the performance suffer.
2. There must be a way to go straight from 4.2.2 to whatever version I choose, right? Do I need to go dig up some old guides on how to update my phone so that the most recent guides are relevant?
I hope I'm not being a super noob about this. I tried Googling around, and I'm pretty tech savvy but just haven't had the time to keep up with recent developments, so some guidance would be very helpful!
About my phone:
Verizon Galaxy S4
Model #: SCH-I545
Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: I545VRUDMI1
Thanks so much!
Find out what base band you have, MDK, ME7?
If MDK, install recovery download rom.
Anything other check this thread out:

I put the baseband version of my phone in my original post. It's I545VRUDMI1. Or am I missing something? So that means I should use Odin to flash whatever rom I decide to go with, right? So if I went with something like this 4.4.4 Google Play Edition I can use Odin to put it on my device? But then if I decide I don't like that rom for whatever reason, I can't redo it with any roms based on an earlier version (4.4.2, 4.3, etc), but other 4.4.4 roms would work?
Thanks so much for the help!
