I'm currently on 3.16 an wanted to upgrade to 3.17... I was told if I did I would break my root.. is there a way to do it without breaking root... sorry for the noobish question

Flash a 3.17-based ROM. If you're S-off you can also upgrade your firmware to the latest version. Then you'll be updated:thumbup:

If you're s-off you can just flash the firmware without changing your ROM. Just go to Captain's firmware thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704612

If I'm s-off and I update the firmware will it make me s-on? And if so should I just update the radios?
How do you plan on updating? Aha either way..download the firmware and flash through your bootloader if you're s-off. Flash the radios only if you're s-on. There are plenty of threads to gather info..

I lost my root on the last OTA and since there are still no new method to re root on this new version might as well wait till the JB update. I think by Mid August / Sept we can see the new OTA to JB

There is a thread that I used after the OTA by xHausx that brought back r00t for me flawlessly, and I used HTC Dev to unlock the bootloader?
FYI.

I almost tried this until I read the following ~ I wanted the fixes in the latest OTA:
"Successful in rooting all builds up to 1.13.651.1."
It works for 1.22. It unlocks your phone and installs twrp. You just have to flash chainfires 0.94 superuser to be fully rooted

Wait, this is getting confusing. We should always be able to unlock thru htcdev on this phone no matter the firmware update. Achieving S-OFF is not yet possible on hboot 1.15, so, that's what some of us are hoping to have...

Yes, S-OFF on hboot 1.15 is a work-in-progress, perhaps with a future Lazy Panda exploit.
I believe the original user's requirement was root and unlocked on the current OTA.
These are HTC phones. You can always use HTC dev as a last resort. We will always have root.
Also, don't accept otas if your rooted or ever plan on rooting.

What do you get from being s-off? I'm htc dev unlock with s on and I've been able to run every rom with no problem and able to update my radio?

Believe that s-on with the new hboot restricts u as to what is flashable, ie kernels, splash screens, radios. Whereas the old hboot does not. Why some of us are waiting for s-off on current ota/hboot.

Should hboot be updated to the newest version after s-off? Are there any downsides? Will it affect s-off or anything down the road?
I am currently on 1.12.

You will maintain soff but you don't need to update through ruu or ota to have the latest firmware update. Just grab the firmware zip from development and flash it to get the latest updates

Great answer. First EVO LTE that I am supporting for a friend of mine. Didn't want an assumption to bite me in the ass.

My evo downloaded a file named: OTA_JEWEL_CL_JB_45_S_Sprint_WWE_3.17.651.4-3.16.651.3_release_334509ls9tpexkjt349evk.zip as an update
But im thinking to flash this rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2048229
so, can i make the update and next flash te rom?
if you take the update, you may loose root. if you want the updated firmware, you can flash that in hboot if you are s-off so you don't have to take the update and keep root.

You most likely won't be able to take the update with a custom recovery installed. It would be better to get S-off if you aren't already, update your firmware and flash whatever ROM you'd like.

Thanks so much
I have an at&t version m8 on nV rls4. Radio is 1.14. Neither sunshine nor the other s-off method will work on my phone. I get the whelp error or thr "incompatible" error.
Is there a way to update my radio without flashing a stock rom and locking recovery first?
Love the rom. Download speeds are fair at best on lte which is why i want to update radio.

Flashing a radio.img? No.
What hboot version? It shipped with hboot 3.16, so unless you changed it, it should still be so (it looks like you haven't gotten the OTA update, as this would have updated your radio to 1.16). AFAIK, only the newer hboot versions are what is blocking firewater s-off method. I would try to flash the stock rooted ROM and try firewater again. AT&T variant with hboot 3.16 should have no issue with firewater; as this is how I got S-off. And the only difference I can see is your custom ROM. It wouldn't think a custom ROM would make a difference, but its worth a try.
The other option if you still can't S-off, is to accept the software 1.58 OTA update or flash the RUU. As already mentioned, it will update your radio to 1.16. But if experimenting with various radios is you goal, this isn't the solution.
Thank you. Yes i am 3.16 still. I will try your advice and report back.
