Has anyone tried any of the wi-fi tethering apps on the market with a rooted Photon? Did it work or will we have to wait for an unlocked bootloader and a custom ROM?
I find tethering to be occasionally useful, but not useful enough to pay an additional $30/month.
I usually tether to a tablet so Bluetooth/USB solutions won't work.
Thank you.
I would love to know that answer.

I have verified that Wifi tether works via the Wifi Tether App on the market once root is obtained.

Can you tell me if it runs in AP (Infrastructure Mode) or Ad hoc?
I had this problem originally on my evo (before wifi tether supported infra) that a lot of devices will only connect to an access point running in AP (infrastructure) mode.

It only worked on Adhoc mode. I could connect laptops and ipod/ipad but not Galaxy Tab10.1. I had to do Adhoc modification on the tab so it can connect. I hope wifi tether app gets updated to support AP mode on Photon soon.
wifi tether 3.0 beta 2
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecod...v3_1-beta2.
Should have an option in the settings to make it broadcast in infrastructure mode. It may call it softap, check it out.
Could not get wifi tether to work on my rooted photon no matter which mode I used.

The software has the options, but the drivers must support it. The Evo didn't get infrastructure mode support in the drivers until 2nd 2.2 update I think.
Either, its up to the wifi tether people to update it for photon like they did for the evo.
On a rooted Photon, is there a way to enable native Android tethering, which seems to be currently hijacked by the Sprint app? Because that would provide infrastructure mode.
i think the question is, where do we request support for the photon?
Anyone having any luck with a solution?
Same problem here ... installed wifi tether on my rooted photon. Can start tethering, clients can join the network, but there's no data communication. Upload/download counters don't change and the client never gets an IP address. Anyone have any luck? I downloaded the current 3-1 beta.
Mine works fine, just downloaded it from the market. Not sure why some of your guys' isnt working.
It works, just not for the devices we want it to[read: devices that use infrastructure], such as the xoom in my case, as well as other tablets. Works great for my girlfriend's macbook though...

I've rooted the MoPho and installed the beta version of WT. I've also tried Barnacle and even the native Hotspot function in the phone all to the same result.
I can see the SSID in inSSIDER and on the network list in Win7. I select it and enter the security key but get a message that Win cannot connect.
Ideas? Am I missing a step?
After some more tinkering I found that if I turned off encryption WT beta works. It's quite slow even with a 4g connection but it works. I also tried Barnacle and the native hotspot application and they both connected but had no internet access.
Ao it looks like WT beta is the answer. Now if anybody can help get encryption to work that would be most helpful.
I haven't had any problems off the market, only device I've tried on it is an ipad 2 though

I have WT beta and it will not let me connect my tab. Not home so I don't know if my laptop connects.

Hey there
When Tethering or using the hotspot what security is there for your pc? I mean is there any firewalling at the phone?
Also, in general when connected via 3G etc what ports are exposed inbound to the phones IP address?
Thanks

Why don't you try driodwall to restrict applications.
It's free from the market but i think it requires root access.

To be honest I think you don't really need to worry much about it. Security should be at the PC level by using a reputable and up to date security program.
Also, although I have heard about security threats from apps etc, just using it for tethering is not effected by this I think, as you are just using the data.
Ever since my home 3g modem blew up 4 months ago I've been using my old S1 as the sole home wifi modem without issue.

Why did you not just use Google?????:

Thanks ntop and sxi200. I was thinking, if you tether then your usb port gets the data in, Im not sure if that can be firewalled, maybe it can. Droidwall, perfect thanks
As for why i didn't Google it, my data connection was woeful and googling was too painful. Got a new contract this afternoon which was why i asked. If you had to Google the answer yourself then why bother replying with sarcasm?

P.s. I wasn't talking about public hotspots, even they have a firewall on their uplink. What i was asking was if using your sgs2 as a modem which has no firewall then what is to stop inbound connections especially when tethering via usb. Droidwall. Thanks

Tried connecting two separate devices (Galaxy Tab 10.1 and a laptop) with the built in portable wifi hotspot on the international i9300. The devices are able to connect, but I'm unable to browse the web (or skype) with either of the connected devices. Tried with security on and off, no luck. Previously on Galaxy Note, didn't have any issues using the same method. I'm with Rogers and I'm sure they haven't changed their policy in allowing tethering with their data plans. Any help our pointers in fixing this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hey guys, Im in need of some help with My wifi hotspot. IM on u.s. Cellular with a galaxy s2 sch-r760 running 4.0.4 ics. I don't have that wifi hotspot feature from the company activated because I feel like it is an insane amount of money for internet. Anyways I've rooted My phone and downloaded root explorer. I deleted the com.synchronoss.me file and restarted my phone, yet my wifi hotspot still won't work. Any help?

I know it's an android bug. But does anyone know why? I'm no developer and Idk where to look. It's only WEP secured routers. It would be awesome if I could connect to wifi at work.
