Hi, i have two questions for you, because i don't know what to do...
- the first one : Android 4.0 will be released for this phone ?
- the second one : is it possible to have an official version of Android gingerbread without Touchwiz for the galaxy S II ? ( i don't very like Touchwiz )
I ask you this questions because i don't know if it's better to wait the nexus prime, or to buy this phone... ( sorry for my english, i'm not very good )
Thank you !
1. Yes, probably
2. CM7 is already available, think of it as souped-up AOSP
If you can wait then go for the nexus prime, but there'll always be something better around the corner and the SGS2 is the best out there for the meanwhile
Ill probably be getting the samsung g note but I wonder will the nexus prime have a removable sd card.
thank you for your answers ! i think i will buy the galaxy ! but one last question : the CyanogenMod roms aren't stable yet ?

They're stable enough, as most users would agree, but there are other AOSP ROMs out there that are pure Android, without any CM stuff. It depends what you want, obviously, but if you're after pure Android (as on a Nexus, for example) then that's available and working very well.

Did you ever use and Android based phone before? Install different launcher and get rid of TW. Root your phone and delete samsung based apps with Root Uninstaller. That's it
if you don't like touchwiz you don't need to switch the rom, just search the market for a launcher that suits your liking and customize it to your preference.
i dont think touchwiz sucks that bad. but i wanted to have more control over how the app drawer sorts apps, so i downloaded go launcher ex (completely free) and i got what i want.

+1 I love TouchWiz 4.0. It's fast, smooth and looks awesome. In addition, I love using some of the widgets that are TouchWiz only. Also if you are a TouchWiz user, you can download an app called Appzorter to alphabetize your app drawer (only works on root though). I've tried other launchers and none of them seem to be as fluid as Touchwiz is.
personnaly, i think touchwiz is not very beautiful, the galaxy seems to be an old phone with that. i prefer the style of android, but it's my opinion.
Sounds like your comparing touchwiz 4 to touchwiz 3 in the galaxy i9000.
Touchwiz 4 is silky smooth compared to any other launcher and adds great functionality compared to an standard android device.

I'm a fan of pure Android too, but it obviously doesn't hurt to try all the alternatives out there. As I said ealier I use MIUI, but it's very much NOT pure Android, although built on an AOSP ROM. CM is also built from the ground up, and that's very popular. Your best bet is to just forget what you already know and try what's out there, because there are some great ROMs available. Just bear in mind that a lot of them are simply tweaked Samsung ROMs, and nothing "new" (no disrespect meant to the developers - purely an observation).
I hated the look of MIUI before I tried it because it looked like someone just wanted Android to look like the iPhone, but trying it really showed me how wrong it was. I just guess it's the same with all ROMs. Don't take anyone's word for it - try it for yourself.
So I have been tempted to flash CM10 for a long time but stock features like Multiwindow and Camera app by Samsung keep me from it.
So i wanted to ask if the quality if the pictures in CM10 was as good as stock S3 Camera app? And I saw there are bugs in cam such as touch 2 focus issues with enabled flashlight and recording effects broken. TV Out issue is also a con..
So is it worth using CM10? Why do you use it. I know some people love vanila android but other than that anything else?
Oh and which one do you prefer, 4.2 or 4.1, I assume both builds are stable enough for everyday use.

worse in what sense? app is bad or picture quality sucks?
both
Guess I wont be flashing CM10.. why do people use it?
because they like its features and the AOSP look as well as the lack of bloat
Yeap, the camera in CM10 and 10.1 is worse.
But I still use it because I like the stock Android look. Next time I'll just buy a Nexus..

I was just reading about the various aosp roms out, aswell as tw ones offcourse and i see a lot of comments stating how people miss the "TW camera".
Correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't it just simply software here with tw having more features vs aosp being generic among all kinds of devices?
Does quality really suffer here due to that? Different processing?
Hardware is still the same so pictures should be damn close....
Not sure...

I'm by no means an expert, but I'm currently running the latest CM nightly and it does seem to be a slightly lesser quality, but it could be just me. Pictures still look great, but I'm also missing some of the TW Camera's features. I love showing off the features of that camera, but I prefer running AOSP or AOKP to TW. Hopefully we can get a port of the app for AOSP, but I'm not sure if thats possible.
The latest version of hyperdrive ROM includes both camera's.

Any rom can. There is flashable zip
I'm going to check for the features of both as I've not used these much but through favorable posts here so why to remain bare handed with such an efficiency
I think the issue with the AOSP camera may be just the way the video is displayed. With the TW camera it looks phenomenally good, AOSP not so much, but the pictures themselves look similar. I only used AOSP a few times, but I felt better about the focusing on the TW camera, maybe because the video was so sharp you could really tell when you had the focus you wanted...which is kind of a big deal for quick snapshots of people.
I have been comparing photos taken using the tw camera and the camera that ships with carbon and I honestly think the carbon pictures look better.

TW was way better than the current AOSP i am using x.x
There's a direct camera comparison of the Google Edition vs TW edition here.
http://www.androidcentral.com/google-play-edition-htc-one-and-samsung-galaxy-s4
yeah its software but the software helps enhance the image. thing is that the aosp camera lacks simple features that every OEM camera has... for example, iso control. it boggles my damn mind that aosp refuses to add iso control. that's something that I use daily.

Used this on the touchwiz roms and worked fine. Haven't tried any aosp roms on the phone yet so can't comment on that.
Definitely a difference in quality. AOSP camera pictures tend to be slightly more grainy, at least from what I've noticed. I have both on Hyperdrive right now and, even after just playing with the AOSP camera, it's pretty clear that there is, at the very least, a slight difference.
Seems like a very noticeable difference to me. Stock TW with this phone was absolutely mind-blowing. Now I'm running Liquid and I love every single thing about it, but the camera is lacking. I don't mind not having the features, but the lower quality makes me consider switching back to TW.
I wonder if someone could figure out the camera enough to make the pictures be on par with tw
I just installed the google edition rom and haven't noticed any difference...then again I don't normally pay attention to that kind of stuff (unless the difference is glaring).
Is it the sharpness, light, dynamic range that doesn't compare?
Anyone try to flash the touchwiz camera on CM?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
I'm running PureGv3 and can honestly say I don't notice any stark difference in my photos. Granted, I haven't viewed them on an actual full screen, but I'm not a pixel connoisseur.
One thing I have noticed, however, is that my AOSP camera is just plain faster. I didn't need all the bells and whistles from TW. I just wanna take pictures. I HATED that "Processing..." screen I would occasionally get with my TW camera. I swore sometimes it took more than two full seconds to add a photo. Now it just zips right in there. I couldn't be happier.
I have been using CM based ROMs for a year, but now I am curious about the Samsung based ROMs (Rooted, deodexed, without bloatware and such) I have read the FAQ thread, but it does not offer me a proper explanation about the differences between CM and Samsung. Only that Samsung ROMs are "smoother". So I am asking in this thread for a wider explanation and to solve some questions I have:
-Why are there more Samsung ROMs than AOSP? Sure that the CM ROMs get more updated, and that people here love open sourcing, but I am curious about this fact.
-Are AOSP ROMs more suited for a "liberated" device? Samsung has closed the hardware sources of the GS3, and thats why the AOSP devs can not release a full working AOSP ROM. At least until Samsung decides to release the sources...
-Also, the Samsung based development is depending on the official updates provided by Samsung right? So the day Samsung drops the service, should we use AOSP instead?
-What is the cuality of a Samsung based ROM? Its much better that the official Touchwiz ROM?
-Its true that the Samsung ROMs have a much better sound than the CM ROMs, or it is vice versa? I am quite an audiophile, so this point interests me.
Lastly, I would like that you could solve me a question. One day, I changed from a CM10.1 ROM to a custom 4.1.2. When I did this, I could not use the Google Backup on my apps, and, for example, I could not recover the Whatsapp conversations. Moreover, I could not access to the SD card through the File Explorer in that ROM. So, is this a common compatibility problem between AOPS and Touchwiz or it is more of a ROM issue?

They're easy to create, plenty of updated versions from samsung and a lot of people prefer them

Question doesn't make sense. IMHO, there are more useful and configurable settings in aosp. Downfall of closed sources are camera quality and possibly battery life

Yes we need rom bases and kernel source code from samsung. Once samsung drop kernel source for the s3, aosp development will slow down considerably

What? If you mean quality,.its much the same with some tweaks to enhance performance, user experience etc. If you're rooted and not using a samsung based custom rom, you're missing out

Apparently but I've not noticed a difference. I listen to a lot of music and am completely satisfied. That said, if there is a difference - it would be understandable

I am deeply sorry, this ROM never saw the light of a proper release. After all the silence, everyone needs an update. I went through a great deal, involving becoming homeless and such, the phone I used to test was stolen, and I lost the computer with all the files for the ROM. Having finally became stable enough to develop, I no longer have anything I would need to develop ROM's for this device.
Without further ado, this ROM is EOL (End Of Life) and won't see any further updates, my development won't continue for this device any further unless anyone can help with donations toward a test device. (Not expecting it) PM me for more info if you wish. With that, I am once again, extremely regretful that I can't continue, but I have no means to continue. Thanks for all the support I once received, catch me on the S6 forums with some new stuff soon!

Hello all! I am introducing a new ROM that I have been working on behind closed doors to give us a great Note7/S8 Experience on our Note Edge devices.
: A new ROM meant to include all and be a single standard introduced in a place of full ROMs just to broaden fragmentation?
Techinically yes, but this ROM is designed around a clean experience that just works. I do not use mods in my ROM unless they are a system tweak or a small addition to improve performance/battery.
I don't believe in mods because some of them have poor implementation and cause issues due to apps not being developed to handle these differences. A good example is people modding their ROMs to have more Nougat style notifications on Marshmallow. These are problematic as the weird set up of the notifications layout can cause problems with apps that don't recognize the change.
My ROM is close to being ready for a Public Release, but keep in mind that I and no other ROM maker are perfect and the ROM may have issues as it grows to fruition.
I will build on this thread once I am ready for release.

Unsure as to what you mean by built-in edge-panel, do you mean the Note 7 version, or the original Note Edge version. If it is the Note 7 version, it is already implemented, I can't implement the original Note Edge panel due to incompatibilities and Performance issues.

Unfortunately, I do not know how to support the SC01G, I can only reliably support devices that are supported by RamKernel, as that is the kernel my Rom relies on. You are free to try any kernel and data fix to see, but I can't be of service. I only build for devices I have nearby and are able to easily test.
Also, sorry friends, the testers and I are still working on some troublesome bugs that make deployment not possible yet. I am also exploring alternative packing methods to lessen the package size to make it easier on bandwidth as well. I don't have an ETA yet, but I promise that the ROM will be worth your while.
I only have one request.
No need to put another camera app on this ROM other than the stock note edge camera but please make it in full screen with no black bars on either side because aside from fingerprint issue that is the only thing that is not fixed on ported roms for our note edge. We will be very happy to see that.
if not possible then please at least make it run in 2560x1440 rather than 2560x1600 that creates a big black bar on the left. side. Thanks.

I implemented a Note 7 Camera into this ROM, I can't use the old Note Edge camera app because it relies on the edge framework from the old edge ROM. It has incompatibilities with my current ROM and can't implement it. Unfortunately, you will have to seek out a new camera app. Sorry I can't help you.

Thank you for your answer mate. Yeah the switch, not easy to describe for me. If you're on lock screen you have on the edge the "Galaxy Note Edge" (or you modify it with "My Design". When you unlock the edge does switch to your default cocktail feed like CatchMe. This switch does not work on the port.

Oh, I understand what you mean. The reason that the Note Edge CocktailBar couldn't be ported is because I am using Norma's Note 7 port. Some may consider it cheap that I use a base and modify it heavily; but it makes no sense to try and reinvent the wheel.
