Hello
I have recently rooted my GT-I9100 and I have a small problem that is driving me absolutely bonkers.
I am trying to edit a file in the directory SDCARD/ANDROID/DATA. I need to change the file permissions but for some reason every time I try to it says "permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems (e.g. SD card) do not allow permission changes."
I have mounted it as r/w in root explorer and also used mount / system app to mount it as r/w to no avail. I don't know if it is something I am not doing or something that I have missed but it is driving me up the wall. I have checked the permissions for root explorer and it has the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission so I don't know what else to do and couldn't find any more info on the net.
Also I know this is probably a really noob question but I am in the UK on carrier Orange and I just wondered if I have the right firmware. My phone says:
Android version 4.0.3
Baseband version I9100XXLPW
Kernel Version [email protected] #3
Build number IML74k.XXLPW
All I wanted to do is install unbranded firmware to get rid of all the Orange loading screen. I got rid of the other bloatware using Titanium BackUp
Thanks for your help peoples.
try using super manager
May I ask, how exactly have you rooted?
[email protected] is a stock kernel...
I just downloaded super manager and that can't even find the file when I go into the folder (?)
And erm well I just rooted it using the steps on galaxys2root.com. Is a stock kernel good or bad? I got the little yellow triangle that comes up when I turn on the device (?) LOL. I am a bit worried now lmao.
Nothing to worry about. You could do with flashing a proper CF-Root kernel though pal. As described here http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-i9100-icsandroid-4-0/ and all information can also be found here at xda.
Okay thank you. I will do that now. Will that mean I am then able to change the file permission that I was trying to do earlier?
Yes you should be able to. Use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en and set the setting to access and write root.
CF-Root thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Okay so I have just done the new kernel thing and got the green PASS on ODIN but my phone is still saying the same kernel version as before. Is this correct?
Hmmm. Now try the ES file manager and set the setting to access and write to root, should be all good.
Thank you very much for your help sir/madam
It worked!

Hello everyone
I'm currently using HTC One from T-Mobile
I have unlocked its bootloader via one tool kit and rooted my mobile and turned it S-off
Untill then everything was just fine when I used the stock rooted Rom, but whenever I try to flash another rom ( I tried Revolution HD 12, and viper 1) I faced a problem that I can't access my files. When I try to look up in es explorer I can't find any of my data, thou that the storage is almost full, and when I enter the recovery mood I can find my all backups which dose not appear by computer or by es explorer.
Any solutions for this mates? How can I access my files after flashing a new Rom?

Common issue when moving from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2
Android enabled multi-user support so the symlinks to storage have been altered. It's now at /data/media/0.
I just had to reformat sd and start over.
You can grab your old files from /data/media/legacy with adb.
From a browser search you'll find a lot of threads on xda about this. I'm by no means an expert.
Hi, I have a xolo qc800 .(Qualcomm 8225q quad core) tablet
Recently I was trying too root my tab using all rooting methods.
And after I gained root ...now I cannot access my sdcard ....so I found a guide to modify the vold.fstab
And in the process of modifying I mistakenly modified it wrong.
And now I cannot access even my internal storage and sdcard
Let me remind that I have root access now
But I don't have access to any apps or any file managers.
So I cant restore the file back to original
I also tried using the adb shell to remount as writable but it says "operation not permitted"
I need help to any guides for restoring vold.fstab back to original.
Please guide me.....
Thanks in advance

It's probably best to flash it and start fresh.

I have a Samsung galaxy s4 with build number I545VRUFNC5.(VZW) I have rooted the phone. I tried to manually fix the ability to write to sd card. In an attempt to swap the platform.xml file, I did not realize that the permissions would automatically change. The file is located here: device/system/etc/permissions/platform.xml. I am unable to fix the permissions to the file, even with root. As a result, the phone shows no files on the internal or external card. (no files are shown when connected to PC either)
I have tried to:
Factory data reset
Change file permissions using root/es file explorer (message: sorry, operations failed)
Change file permissions using terminal emulator (emulator error is "read only file system")
flash kit kat using odin (I flashed correctly, but I still could not change the permissions to the file)
Verizon wireless assistant (will not connect to phone)
Samsung Kies (It tells me that phone is not supported)
I can make calls/text, but cannot connect to internet. I there a way that I can change the file permissions from a computer? How can I go back to the original system settings? Please help.
Note: I also downloaded previous build for phone (I545VRUEMK2) I did not put this on the phone because I'm not sure if it is safe and I'm not sure that it will fix my problem.
Thank you
Fixed Problem
Just after posting this thread, I did a factory data reset. This followed the Kit Kat flash using odin. Everything seems to working normally now.
Thank You
I have lenovo vibe shot and I have updated it with Android 6.0.1, rooted it with SuperSU 2.78
and installed systemless xposed framework on it all of the things are going well but
recently I tried to change the boot animation and I realized that I dont and I cant have writing access
to /system and any of its sub folders (i want to replace a couple of MP4 files inside /system/media
no matter if I use mount commands from adb from PC or any other app in my mobile, write access will not be given
for example ES File explorer says it is read only, when I click on write and click OK, it will show no error, but going to
same setting again it shows read only selected again
similar is the case with Root Browser
I think it is due to systemless root
But is there any way I can get write acccess to /system/media ???
plz help

Root properly
I did it twice using TWRP I flashed Super SU 2.78 2 times, it never showed any error
and went fine
Plz tell me a little more if you mean something else by root properly
Any app that needs root access is working perfectly fine except for this permission
setting issue on /system
