I am not happy with my new Xperia S or Sony's attitude. I only had the phone a week and the screen has many fine scratches. I am extremely careful with my phones - my original Desire's screen is unmatied. With the Sony statement forth Xperia being scratch resistant I felt I was on safe ground - after all I'd come back to Sony to rediscover the quality I yearned and always had on previous Sony phones since my Z1 back in '96.
I've treated my Xperia the same as those before it - the most extreme condition being loose in my inner suit pocket with my work BlackBerry. And this is exactly what has covered it in scratches - the pitch of the scratches matching that of the cheap plastic keys on the BlackBerry.
And to insult me properly I get the below response from Sony, as if they are sniggering from around the corner.
"Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.
We can confirm the handset is scratch resistant, however not scratch proof, it is still possible to scratch the screen of the handset, we apologize for any confusion caused by this."
I though this was Sony trying to get back on a level with the top guys... With gorilla glass everywhere else many (me included) assumed Sony's claim of scratch resistant meant some proprietary equivalent.
One Sony Xperia S for sale. ....... Only loads of minor scratches...
You aren't aware that your Xperia S came screen protector preinstalled? Glass underneath is scratch proof mineral glass.
Mate i believe you scratched the protective screen protector, as it is really easy to get scratched, even with a fingernail you will be able to scratch the screen protector ( minimal scratch ofc )
Remove the screen protector and your scratches will be gone
watch from minute 2:40:
is it really the screen or the screen protector?
The preinstalled plastic is not a screen protector, but for keeping the glass together if the screen cracks so the glass is not going everywhere in the air.
I would say as the ppl above, this is scratched, not the screen
Dont worry. U can take it off and use the actually screen protector that came in the box!

I think that most of people out there didn't notice the screen protector, which is easily get scratched btw!
Using mine for a week with the factory protector installed. Not a single mark on it!

Believe it or not.
2 weeks ago i was getting the screenprotection off..
It just wont go off.. No it just wont..
Damn that thing was stuck on the screen..
Got a screwdriver in to it.. Putting it in with power etc..
I thought by my self.. Screen is now f8cked..
Finally i got it out.. Cleaned with a glass cleaner...
Nothing?
Still no scratches.
I've had mine about 5 weeks and the pre-installed shatterproof sheet is showing a few scratches. Just ordered a screen protector from PDair.

Thanks all for the info. I'd seen talk of removing the protector, but had assumed this was the additional plastic sheet that was in the box and that maybe in some places this is already stuck on.
It is very odd that when I contacted Sony they did not point this out or suggest replacing it.
I assume if I search around the forum will I find plenty of good advice on replacement screen protectors? ie one that don't scratch when you sneeze on them!
Any advices on removing preinstalled screen protector? It'll drive me mad!
EDIT: Did it!! A Very sharp knife and a fair share of pressure did the trick!

Try a brando ultra clear or martin fields screenprotector. Both are high quality and much better scratch resistant. Both brands have protectors for the xps that can be ordered online.

If you dont want to see any scratch in your screen, I'd recommend you to search for a 'Matte' screen protector, which I've chosen to be from Steinheil for my past phones: They -are- the best ones offered. A bit expensive though...
They seem a bit blurrier than the crystal clear ones, but I guarantee the 'soft touch feeling', no more oily screens and no scratches makes up to that.
Specially because we have a bright screen with sharp colours so there'll be no problem I guess.
Wait, so there's actually a screen protector on the phone from the factory?
Can I remove it? Any benefits to removing it?
I can barely see it on the glass, almost missed this.

Yes there is.
Look closely to the corner of the screen.
Yes you can take it out.

Even gorilla glass can be scratched with keys or against another hard object like another phone, every phone to date is susceptible even your Desire which doesn't come any protection against ware and tare.
It's toughened glass not steel, Sony is exactly right with the screen being scratch resistant, not scratch proof just like any other mobile maker will tell you and just like all other mobiles/tablets currently in circulation.
Seriously don't put your brand new mobile in with your keys, coins, junk etc, wait a few months at least like I do lol.
Completely agree with ErichSan, I hate the oily/smudgey feeling screen protectors also.

He's peeling of the plastic that is there to keep the glass together if it breaks. The preinstalled plastic filter does NOT protect against scratches (it may work a little bit against scratches). If u really want one who protects, the phone came with a screen protector in the box.

Well according to Sony it's a bit different as you suggest here, I asked the
question directly on the Sony forum see the reply I got:

Ordered a Martin screen thingy. I'll let you know how it goes.
thanks,

I have noticed on my XS today that on the front of the cap where the engraved xperia logo the plastic has sort of been rubbed so its now shiny and doesn't look matte. I thought it was just a bit of dirt or sweat from my hand but after wiping it, its still there.
I keep it in a screen protector and case, the only contact that part of the phone has with something else is when it's in my pocket, so is this the jeans causing it?
Rather annoying tbh, anyone experienced this?
I don't remember sony said that the phone is scratch proof
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
I wouldn't expect it to be scratch proof, but JEANS!!! Come on, that's a joke...
Mines off for repair but I didnt notice anything on the bottom bezel(also the only "exposed" bit on mine.
Are your jeans very loose? Its a big phone and I tend to wear regular or skinny fit jeans so the phone moves very little, maybe with very large pockets it would rub more.
With 1 week of usage, my XS is really good in this point.
No problem here, my case fully protects the phone I guess
Not that loose, I think its more from the repetitive taking phone in out of pocket as it rubs against the inside of the pocket.

I to have this problem. On mine, it's the smallest part on the left hand side of the plastic. Like you I thought it was some dirt or something but it wont rub off, so i'm assuming that its the crap plastic. Quite annoying though, had my x10 for 2 and a bit years and the only mark on it is where i dropped it and it took some of the plastic of both bottom corners.
Oh, and i don't ware particularly tight or loose jeans. But the pockets are not the same material as the jeans are they so could it be that?
I know that jeans can have a sandpaper effect.
I first thought when reading the title, that your phone had damaged your jeans
Because that is possible too (talking out of experience with another SE phone with less rounded edges)
@dclark16
Yeah its quite a joke, I've also just noticed that the corners and edges of the phone are a dark shiny black...
@kaizokan
Ahaa, yes that reminded me of my K850i which made a big white L shape in the top corner of the jeans pocket
Its impossible that jeans can damage any hard thing.
Maybe little sand in your pcoket or something?

um...the jeans fabric is pretty abrasive, close to sandpaper.
So yes, nothing is scratch proof if you scratch it against a sandpaper.
The matte finish is a joke on this. Not durable at all, scuffs etc way too easy. I had mentioned a few weeks ago that under light use and good care that there were shiny areas appearing already. I have had other devices for 3 months that have looked better than my S after 3 weeks. (My X10 was far more durable)
Sony hasn't bothered to answer me at all, not that I really expected them too.
I have order a couple of more cases, etc but I will also be ordering a new bottom cap and battery back for when I resell it.
To be honest, I have seen some reviews of the One X that has the same issues, although not quite as bad.

Definitely agree with this, after all the noise sony made about how great the anti stain coating is...
I should take an eraser to the finish and see what happens... I'll bet it polishes it.
It's the same on mine and on the back cover around the camera. Shiny marks from the belt bag and a leather pouch. So the coating is very easy to get marks.

well the anti-stain coating does not mean anti-abrasive.
the point is understand the texture of jeans fabric is very coarse and act like a sandpaper.
The plastic case is to cry..
I have an black one and its now like an 2 years used phone..
Also the backplate is cheap o plastic..
But the screen is ok

The plastic they use must be the usual glossy stuff but with a matte coating (the way matte LCD panels are made).
After 20 falls , uncountable number of bumps... , keys and phone together ...
And finally today!!! My screen got scratched but just a teeny bit!
And its on the screen protector!!
All i can say is this phone is tooo durable...
Tell me your experiences with screen getting scratched
My back cover got a (very) little clicky after some drop from table to hard floor, just bend it hard with hand and no clicky now, lolz. The screen protector is covered with scratch now, not a problem.
But the soft touch started to peeled off on the corner now. I have another white back cover but it's not look as good as the black one (really wish for a glossy black one) anyone know how to convert the soft touch one to glossy?
The soft touch on my black jack (i607) in old days: bruised as hell but never peel off.
Me too facing the peeling of the back cover at the corners. Can anyone suggest from where i can buy another back cover ?
me too. im looking for someone who sells a back cover for my xperia ray
I got my camera sensor scratched (sort of, it looks like it lost a layer of plastic in a few spots), the back cover losing it's matte surface in the corners, and some of the paint in one of the metallic corners and I take maniacal care of it and never dropped it once.
I also had 2 white pixels and could not get it replaced because unless the screen has FOUR bad pixels on the same line they are not supposed to replace it as it's not defective.
That being said, do you think it's more likely to win at the national lottery or to have 4 dead pixels on the same line out of 409.920 pixels?

Back cover no, sorry; but after you get one, a gel cover like this one is handy. I'm very satisfied with it.
But i will become yellow after a time .
I have the same just buy one made in leather it cost 3 dollars with free shipping on ebay
I have buy back cover on ebay,.. original.
yeah I have a scratch on the screen, even is have a screen protector
(in whisper) isn't this the development forum?:silly:
WELL theres no General Forum for The Ray ...
Just two little visible scratches in the protector screen, and some more "invisible" (they're only visible at the sun).
Yes, very durable phone. I love it.
I have a little crack on my screen, don't even know what it's from..
actually i'm an ROTC Cadet which means all the things in your pocket usually bumps to stone whenever senior officers give you exercise. my ray never had scratches on the screen, but a lot of scratches at the back cover, i must say that this beautiful monster is really durable.
if you wear it inside a case there should be no need for other protections
:cyclops:
I had a few drops but was smart enough to have a rubber-plastic mixed cover for it. It has saved me from quite a few heart attacks.
I have dropped it a couple of times but the phone has not received any damage... but some days ago I noticed that the crystal of the camera sensor has some blur on it because of alcohol splatter (I don't think these marks could be removed ) and also two red pixels on the center of the screen that are only noticeable when I set a black background... other than those the phone is perfect

OnT: Mine have managed too stay pretty shiny but I almost missed the bus going to work one day so I had to run my a%# off and suddenly I feel a jerky motion from my headphones and the music stops. Man did that phone fly or what, I think it was 10 feet between the phone, battery and backpiece :/
Just put everything together and it was like new besides a scratch on the screen (and I don't even use screenprotection )
Still, looks pretty good though.

I have scratches on my Ultra Z screen and want to remove the factory anti shatter plastic but am having a bit of trouble.
Anyone have any tips on removing this ? I could only chip a small patch in corner off. It doesnt want to do like I have seen in the Z videos and lift up for me to pull it off. Should i use a razor top scrap or is there some solution like nail polish remover that may help ? Any ideas would be great .. heat ?
try to use the lighter and quickly put some heat on the corner
Sucess !!!!! I removed the shatter proff Screen protector from my Xperia Z ultra
I did it ! I may be the first one to remove the Xperia Z ULTRA shatter proof factory screen protector so far. It was a *****. took a razor blade(small) and about 1 hour of scraping till my figures felt like they where gonna fall off. There was a ton of glue I had to clean off afterwards with nail polish remover and eye glass cleaner.
It is clean as a wistle now! not 1 scratch. I dont recommend trying this for the faint of heart. My wife thought I hosed the phone.

I just had a small 1/4 inch piece of razor blade i would jam it under and pull 5 cm pieces off. The plastic is very brittle and would just kinda break/flake off in small pieces. It took quite awhile to complete. It may work better with a diffrent tool.
There was no marks left on the screen and I was pushing hard with the flat of the razor blade

I have taken the anti shatter protectors of my previous Sony's like the Ion but not on one of the larger devices. Do you recommend undergoing this long surgery either the Ultra? I usually prefer the feel and look of smooth glass. The Ultra seems to have a different material/process used making it much more difficult. Thanks.

Yes I feel its worth it. I am sure using a better tool to get under the plastic would have helped , like a craft makers razer blade pen with a straight/flat edge. You just have to remeber its not like the Z videos where someone lifts a tiny edge and pulls the whole thing off . It's very brittle and must be lifted off with a razor or flat edge tool bit by bit.
I put a standard screen protector on and it feels better than the Sony installed one. and I have the option now to remove it anytime .
I have ordered a tempered glass screen protector , ill keep you posted on how it works.

Mine came off in little pieces with a lot of glue residue. I started peeling with my fingernail before reading this thread and thought the brittle screen protector was part of the glass. It's pretty clean now, after an initial pass with fingernail polish remover. I usually don't like after market screen protectors but let me know where you got the tempered glass one.

Just wondering if the frame paint is not peeling off?
The reason is that I put a full tight protected silicone case, but I need to take it of regularly for charging purpose as I also use magnetic dock (I don't want to sacrifice my USB flap, either).
I heard that the upper and bottom parts of the frame are made of painted plastic.
Is it peeling off after some time?
I believe that the whole frame is anodised aluminium, I got that from the info-graphic published by sony, and the fact that mine has gone for a skate and the bottom bezel looks not to be plastic.
No peeling I dropped mine and on top of the frame I got a deep scratch but it's still black so no peeling

Question for you people that have scratches on it. How? How are you doing this? I've had mine since release and I have zero scratches or marks on the body, and I've never used a case or anything on it. Never.
So the question is; are you guys throwing it around and putting it in places with keys and other stuff, because I don't understand how it's possible to make the power button as ugly as Confus3d's button.
- Yes, I use my Ultra as my main phone, and I have it with me wherever I go
- Never used any protection
- Yes, it has hit the floor a couple of times
- Yes, I take it with me and use it when I'm out on town... not being sober.

I use the phone without case and only have scratches in the back and a little bit in the lense glass, and i don't know why my button is rusted, because i've never used the phone in the water.
My last phone was an iphone 4s and two years later the buttons are perfect!
I use it very carefuly, in fact the phone has kiss the floor only once and it was a friend (a stupid friend).
I think the button has some kind of paint on it, but i'm prety sure that it's not an aluminium button
I've used mine with and without case only scratch is on top and I drop it like 2 meters from me getting out from a car rest of the phone looks brand new and I have it from last year when they put this baby on sale

There is 'peeling' on the corners of the phone due to friction between the corners of the phone and the corner of the case. There is one (relatively speaking) giant area of peel off in the lower part of the front edge. It is kind of 'contained' within the microphone slit.
I'd send pics, but it is 3:30am out here, you'll have to wait for 4-5 hours more [emoji16].
Edit: The power button is spotless, BTW.

Could it possible that the white version is made from plastic, while the black is fully anodized aluminium?
Mine is also white.
Looking forward for the pictures, warfareonly... Thanks.
I don't have much skill with a camera, so I have attached all the shots which I took. :silly:

That doesn't look like anodized aluminium. It looks like a painted plastic, instead.

The top and bottom panel is plastic while the sides are made of aluminum. Plastic to probably help the antennas. At least on the black version.

It's true, you can check it easily with a coin. Smash the sides and hear the sound it makes. Top and bottom are plastic sond while sides are aluminium!

This means, we cannot avoid peeling paint on top and bottom parts of the frame. It will peel off, eventually. :crying:
The question now: how to make it last longer...?
I realize, this is a thing that I don't like from Sony. I have some Sony gadgets, most of the chrome painted parts are peeling off...
You don't like Sony you should see the peeling on the frame of galaxy line (S1,2,3)

Yeah. The "chrome" frame of my Galaxy Note doesn't exactly look "fresh" anymore.
