64gb sdcard - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I recently bought a Samsung 64 GB sdcard for my s4. I'm coming from a 32gb. I'm looking to do links2sd and swapper. Plus storage on it.
I'm having problems moving stuff to the new card. I was able move some stuff but when I insert card into phone it says it's blank. I've done this several times and each time it does the same thing.
I partitioned the card but my question is what should I partition to? Fat32? I'm assuming android keeps formatting the card when it's installed for some reason. Maybe wrong partition type?
Thanks

I dont have a definate reply on this but I know in the past when you insert a card into a phone, the phone has an option to partition it and install the needed stuff....I dont think you can take a blank card..install stuff on it with your computer, then insert it into the phone and expect it to see the stuff you transferred...
Try putting in the card (into the phone), then hooking the phone up to your pc and transfer stuff that way!

Ok. I can try that. But what should the partitions be? I want to do Linux swap and link2sd. Idk what the main data partition should be....fat, fat32, idk which one.

I believe link2sd required 2 partitions on the sdcard. You need to use a third party software on your PC (partition magic etc..) and use this to create 2 partitions:
* Partition 1 (FAT) is for a normal storage like copy/save files between your phone and pc
* Partition 2 (FAT32, ext2,ext3,ext4) is for moving your apps/data from phone internal storage to this partition. Your PC will not able to see this partition.
Due to limitation of FAT32 or FAT you limited to max of only 32gb, by using a third party software on your pc like formatfat32 could over come this limitation. I use linux software called "Gpart" http://gparted.org/download.php ,since Gpart is a linux it won't run on Windows, you need to download the iso image then use imburner to burn the iso to cd, then change your PC to first boot from CD instead of Harddisk. A second method is use Windows free software called Mini tool partition wizard home edition http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html. or third option is using Android parition tool here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sylkat.AParted

How did you brick your phone? About the partition your sdcard, it's not the card it's the mini tool software, it's unreliable. If you have time use Gparted and you should see everything is working as expected. Use the linke to download Gparted iso image, then burn the image to cd, this will create a linux OS on the CD, put the cd in your pc, reboot then hit F12, you should see a boot menu, just select boot from CD, then keep hitting enter when prompt, finally you will see the interface to repartition. The operation is exactly the same as Mini tool.

Idk all I did was shut my phone down and now it won't boot back up or anything. No charging indicator lights....nothing. This sucks. I didn't do anything to the phone recently...
But after doing research I guess Samsung had this problem happen a lot.

Just a shot, but take your battery out, wait 5 min, plug in your wall charger, then reinstall your battery and see if your phone turn on.

Does your computer recognize the device if you hook up the USB and hold down the power button for a minute or so?
If so, what kind of device shows up?

USB Storage Damaged

So i was about to check something on the internet by using 3g data, but for some reason the 3g wasnt working, so i thought id refresh the phone by giving it a fresh reboot.
Upon doing so, after the phone fully rebooted, i got a notification in the notification bar 'Usb Storage Damaged' with sub-text 'Usb storage damaged. It may need reformatting'.
I have checked and i can access everything in CWM recovery, so therefore backing up the stuff i want/need shouldnt be a problem.
My question is, that is there a way to fix this WITHOUT reformatting?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Ideally copy off the data first so you have a backup then run chkdsk in Windows as it's FAT32.

Hi, I have a similar problem on my unrooted S2.. I have read that using chkdsk in Windows on an unrooted phone wont work (and didn't when I tried). I don't mind rooting, though I'm not sure if I could even do this while there is a USB storage error. I have hours of recorded lectures on my phone, and exams coming up soon so I am desperate not to reformat if possible!
I've been using my phone without USB storage for about 2 weeks now trying find a fix, and I guess this is my last hope, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your answer , But when I connect my phone to the PC and choose USB storage ,all I get is grayed out I and J drives.
how do I preform a CHKDSK? I tried running CHKDSK.exe but it doesn't seem to do anything (it says it's in read -only mode) .
EDIT:
I got it ,it's working again ,a couple of restarts and connecting \disconnecting to pc solved it.
as for CHKDSK.exe I copied it to the sd card and ran it from there.
thanks a lot
Hi,
I have a similar problem...
My SGSII battery ran out and when I started the phone after recharge, it started to give an error that the internal storage is damaged and also stopped to recognize the microSD card.
The microSD connected to the PC it is recognized and does not accuse error with chkdsk. I tried to format the MicroSD (on the phone) and then to mount it, but it does work.
Also, connecting the phone to PC in mass storage mode simply shows teh drive letters, I can't access the drives.
I did not want to format the internal storage before be able to copy my data, and I think the problems are related.
I managed to mount and access the internal storage using the terminal emulator (running on the phone) using the command
mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p11 /sdcard/
But the rest of the system does not recognize even after this procedure, and I don't know the command to do the same with the MicroSD; or copying data to a PC to then try to wipe or factory reset.
I've tried to reinstall the ROM with ODIN and did not solved the problem.
Also tried to install CWM recovery, but it can not mount / sdcard (gives error).
Could anyone help me?
Thank you!

Enable UMS/USB MSC/ USB Mass Storage Mode

Hi
Does anyone know how to enable UMS in the galaxy s3 when connected to a pc.
The mtp/ptp rubbish doesn't even come close to cutting it.
Slow, unmapped interface(no drive letter), incompatible with pc backup/sync software, limited file operations and you can't bypass it
Need I go on...
I know the s2 with ICS(and the htc sensation xe has UMS by defuault) has this fucntionafter some tinkering so there is no reason why the s3 cant be able to do it.
Even if I have to flush the rom, hack or take the phone apart I want,I NEEEED UMS
someone...please
Yeah I want to know this myself but more for connecting to other devices with USB host like my car or other tablets.
from my readings, UMS can't be enabled.

So who's to blame for this Samsung or Google? Because I'm always lording it over IPhone users how much freedom we get and yet they do some crap like this so I can't use this with my car's USB host.

defo samsung...there are a lot of ics sandwitch phones that support ums. I emailed them here is their reply...
"The reason Mass Storage is not available on the Samsung Galaxy S3 is that the memory is no longer decompartmentalised so that only certain apps can be stored in certain places. Your memory is now just one block and you can store whatever you please on the phone's memory"
i don't think the sd card is part of the phone storage so this is just PR spin. How is making it this way even helpful?
i wonder
for UMS can try this app

It will make external micro SD card on Samsung Galaxy S3 available as USB mass storage device. It supports exFAT for the moment (tried FAT32 but not working).
I think they followed galaxy nexus. With hacks, cracks, whatever, you will never ever able to use ums with your sdcard, except the micro sd card. This is because the data and sdcard are on the same partition, just with different mount point. The good thing is the storage is shared, do no space is wasted. But the bad news is you can't use ums. Ums requires that the partition need to be unmounted first before mounting, and of course, you can't just unmount data.
Quick [Q]
Are you able to mount your SGS3 to your PC? I had the same issue with my Note. I had Android driver and SDK installed and everything on no go. I installed Kies and once I did that, it mounted the Phone.
Try that...
Hey tenchi0205, a reformatted the ext. sd card to exFAT as you suggested, but unfortunately i can't see the card as an USB Mass Storage.
Any further idea?
Thank you in advance!

There are plenty threads about this subject, the short answer is: NO there is not even a theoretical method to get it work.
Windows will never understand EXT4 filesystems and mounting a filesystem on 2 computers will only destroy it anyway.

The answer is that you can't enable mass storage / UMC on the Galaxy S3, because the internal sdcard is not an independent partition, is just a subfolder of the data partition, unlike older devices like Galaxy S2.
You have to use phone side applications which are more limited of course.
Read this for further understanding:

C'mon, this in only for the external (microsd), not for internal. When I said that's not possible, I really mean that. Furthermore, I don't know of any phone side application that emulates it.

Samsung USB OTG Official cable effed up my External HDD

Just bought USB OTG cable samsung original Model: ET-R205UBEGSTD, mfg date 22/5/2012.
It displays my pen 16gb usb NTFS drive after i had installed siyah kernel and Oi filemanager. However when i connected it to the external 500GB WD HDD it just powered it on and didn't show as mounted or anything. After waiting sometime i removed it.
I dont know if the power requirement of the drive is too much for SIII or what but now the external drive is not even being recognized by my PC. Hope it wasn't screwed by S3.
Anyone tried OTG with external HDD?
Update: It fked up my external HDD and it's not being recognized by my pc or any other device. Shows as unrecognized USB device. Took it apart but the WD proprietory connection at the back will not allow me to connect it directly to PC. I lost about 250GB worth of data on it.
I've a friend who has tried this, he said he wasn't able to see the drive via his phone either.
He has siyah kernel and it is ntfs, but no dice. However his hard drive still works afaik.
I know that connecting drives works as I've seen it done but I've never tried it.
What do you think was the cause?

best chance is with usb 3 harddisks as they need only a third of the power (vs usb2) to boot.

If anyone else has tried it pls do share.
Also how to make XB360 usb controller work on it as i've connected it but need an app to recognize it.
I tried many flash drives, all worked properly, I even tried a wireless mouse and it worked instantly
however, I tried two WD 500 GB HDs , both weren't recognized by the phone, but they worked normally after that when I connected them to my PC, hopefully your data can be salvaged somehow !

USB3-specification is designed to require less power for the protocol and communication chip. However the devices (USB-sticks or in this case hard drives) are not affected by that; the spindle motor still drains a huge amount of power and usually goes well above the specified 0.5Amp of USB2 during start-up.
USB-Harddrives may cause damage to the phone's motherboard due to them requiring more power than the whole phone itself takes.
It's noteworthy that, while compatible with the USB2 protocol, USB-OTG is specifically NOT compatible with devices except if explicitly stated as compatible. Regardless most devices just work.
I'd recommend only using flash drives (since they need only a small amount of power) or powered hard drives, respectively unpowered ones on a powered hub.
The phone's (Linux) exFat-implementation is kinda broken, so if your harddrive was FAT64 it might have caused partition table corruption.
The corresponding Windows tools should however usually be able to at least partially recover the filesystem.
NTFS, as from the NTFS-3g project, should work fine.

On the phone, however I'd recommend doing it over adb since typing in the phone's terminal emulator is cumbersome and speed is the key here =)
Dmesg reports the last X messages given by the kernel which includes USB and filesystems.
Type 'dmesg > /sdcard/log.otg.txt' (no quotes) but DO NOT PRESS ENTER
Plug in the USB-OTG adapter without anything attached.
Hit Enter as soon as it's connected to run the command.
Now type 'dmesg > /sdcard/log.mount.txt' (no quotes) and again DO NOT PRESS ENTER
Plug in the hard drive / Usb stick and wait 2 seconds, then hit Enter
Attach both logfiles here so we can see whaat your phone actually does and what goes wrong.

[Q] SD card and internal storage not mounting after running CWMR. What to do?

First off, I am very new to the world of ROMs/modding, so I apologize in advance if anything that follows misuses any terms or fails to provide proper information. Please let me know if you need me to clarify anything.
I have an Atrix 4G with AT&T running the stock 2.3.6 build 4.5.141. In light of Motorola's recent abandonment, I took it upon myself to load the stable version of CM7 onto my phone until enough of the bugs in CM10 had been worked out. I lurked XDA for a while until I got up the courage to root my phone and unlock my bootloader, at which I was successful (thanks, guys!), but I ran into a problem when I tried to use ClockworkMod Recovery to flash the ROM. After what seemed like a successful installation, I got caught in a boot loop, and had to boot to recovery mode.
Here's where I did the stupid thing: while in recovery mode, I tried several different options that I did not fully understand and somehow ended up getting it to boot back to the stock OS restored to what appear to be more or less factory settings. That's good, right? Well, now neither my phone's internal storage nor the external SD card will show up in my phone. I guess they aren't mounting? In Settings>Storage, the option to mount the SD card is grayed out and the internal storage listing is nowhere to be seen. Obviously this keeps me from accessing my recovery data, if it's even still there. My wifi also seems to not be working, displaying "error" whenever I try to turn it on in Settings.
The weird thing is that my phone's OS seems to be working fine otherwise. I can't access any file storage, but I can install apps to the app storage partition and use them just fine, as long as they don't require internal or SD storage. I am honestly confounded and I cannot find anything that resembles a solution to this problem. I am done messing with things I don't understand, so I am asking for help.
Help?
No idea what you did, but I'd say you somehow managed to bork both your storages. The easiest way to fix this is to go to CWM and format both internal and external storages. The downsize to this is obviously that you will definitely lose everything stored there. A more complicated approach would be to connect the phone to the computer and run some filesystem scanning/fixing/repairing tools and hope for the best. As for the external SD card, it would be even better if you could pull it out and put it into a card reader and connect it to the computer that way.

Thank you for your reply.
I followed your advice and attempted to format /sdcard and /emmc (I believe that's internal storage) in recovery mode. I got a mount error when I tried the /sdcard, but /emmc format appeared to be successful. I then rebooted the phone, but the conditions are still the same. No internal or external SD storage. I will try to get a card reader for the micro SD card to look at it on my computer, but I am alarmed that I can't get access to my internal storage even after formatting it.
What kind of filesystem tools would I need to use while plugged into a computer? What could I do if the storages aren't mounting? Am I completely screwed?
Not sure about your phone but on my galaxy s, emmc is the external storage and sdcard is the internal.

Oh dear. That would mean that what I can't mount is actually the internal storage. Is there any way to remedy that?
Connect the phone to the computer (enable USB transfer mode on the phone if needed) and run some windows built-in tools like scandisk, chkdsk, format...
Just one caveat - if you decide to format, make sure you select FAT32, NOT exFAT, NTFS...

Alright, I tried to connect like you said, making sure to enable USB mass storage mode. However, while the PC acknowledges that something is plugged in (installs drivers), neither storage is showing up as a drive when I try to access them with Windows Explorer. I can't do anything to them if they don't show up, or can I?
I did order a microSD card reader to try to connect the external drive to the computer that way. It should arrive sometime tomorrow. I'm thinking that if I can get the computer to read it that way that maybe I can format it so that the phone will finally be able to mount it again. Not sure what to do about the internal storage (or the broken wifi) after that, but I suspect that if I manage to flash a different ROM from external storage that I'll be able to recover that functionality? Or am I mistaken?
Hard to say. You sure have it tough there.
Try this - when the phone is connected and transfer mode selected, right click My Computer, select Manage, then go to Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management and see if anything appears there. If not... then I'm out of ideas I'm afraid.

could you do a chkdsk of the drives?
open start, type cmd, right click and open as admin,
then type chkdsk L: (I think, resolution of screenshot is not that good)
then chkdsk F:
see if any errors pop up

It's E, not L. Sorry about the resolution.
For both chkdsk commands, the message "Cannot open volume for direct access" was returned.
OK well, at least something. It's a little worrisome that it says "no media" even for internal storage.
Not sure if you had the external SD card inserted at that point, if you did, try the same thing but take the SD card out of the phone.
Also try right-clicking on one or the other, see what it offers - if you get something like "create volume" or similar, might try that.
Is it correct that one of the drives shown has about 1.46 GB (i assume your microsd) and the other has 14.37 GB?
that would seem strange to me because my internal accessible memory is only 10.71 GB, seems like system partition or something is considered with it. Maybe you have a problem with your partition table...

Those are actually partitions of the PC's hard disk (C).
My internal storage should be ~8GB and the external one is a 32GB microSD card. Those would be the E and F removable drives that show up as having no media attached.

I tried again with microSD removed, and the results were exactly the same, even down to both E & F volumes both being displayed in Disk Management when the phone is connected. Chkdsk commands in the command prompt for both of these volumes also returned the exact same error message as before.

I see.
Any potentially useful options on right-click on either?
Also try booting into fastboot and do moto-fastboot erase emmc and see what happens. (Hope you have moto-fastboot installed and ready.)
the error message for chkdsk seems to be related to another program installed on your pc, check here if it is one of these programs. If all this doesn't work (or you're tired of fiddling and trying to get back your data) you can try formatting them through cmd (FORMAT E: /FS:FAT32 and FORMAT F: /FS:FAT32)
if it all works you can use a program called recuva to try get some data back afterwards.

So same result as before, did you look in the list of those programs? Else you can try to go into safemode with your pc and do the chkdsk or/and format command from in there.
Might be easier than uninstalling programs

[Q] Help! No ROM, USB not recognised!!

Hi all,
First off, get the laughs out the way. Not posted on here before but used the forum a lot over the past year or so and i desperatley need someones help.
Long story short.
1) Currently i can only access CMR 6.0.3.2
2) I have no ROM available on int SD due to doing a system wipe while flashing Cyanogenmod 11 nightly which failed due to Status 7 error ( did not think this error would happen!)
3) My PC & Laptop will not recognise the S3 through USB despite all correct drivers being correct.
4) CMR will not let me mount the 8GB ext SD card. I have tried formatted to NTSC and Fat 32 and both not mounting, get the mount error message.
To sum it up, im fooked. I cannot access the int SD to drop a ROM on it and cannot access the Ext SD card through recovery which DOES have a ROM on it.
Do any ofyou fantastic people have any idea what i can do apart from dress it up nicely and make an ornament out of it?
Thanks!
Scott

Yes Scott. Do not make an ornament out of it!
Okay, serious .. download the ROM of your region from sammobile.com. Install Odin on your laptop. Boot your S3 in download mode. Flash the firmware from sammobile.com on your phone using Odin.

Hi Hamza,
Thanks for the reply. This is one of the problems noted above as that my laptop and PC will not recognise my S3 via USB. Tried different USB wires and installed various versions of the drivers, uninstalled, reinstalled etc It just will not connect be recognised.
Any other thoughts?

Sorry, I thought that your phone will get recognized when in Odin mode or download mode. I am afraid I am out of tricks for now, but let me search and get back to you in case I find anything
Hello Scott,
Can you enter in Download mode on phone?
"First shut down your device, then power on by simultaneously pressing the power button, home button and volume down key. Now you will see download mode and you will be asked if you want to cancel or continue. Press volume up to continue or volume down to cancel and reboot."
For that part you don't need connection to PC (yet).
If u succeed entering in download mode, then use the link that Hamza posted, to restore your device through Odin
HI!
Its no problem to get in to download mode but as the laptop and PC will not recognise my S3, neither does Odin.
The very 1st think i knew to do was to try and flash a stock ROM via Odin, but sadly can't
I've flashed ROM's a lot however it was a rookie mistake not to make a backup on this occasion that was accessable in this situation. My backups and ROMs are on the Ext SD card....
Ive searched and the only 2 outcomes i can see to resolve are to mount my Ext SD card, which i can't do on CMR or to make the handset visible o use Odin or to drop a ROM on the Int SD but again, can't.

We have 5 or 6 USB cables for our phones around here, and only 3 work for our S3 phones. Worth a try?
One more thing crossed my mind... In CWR, did you try "mount usb storage"? Under "mounts and storage" setting.
I had a similar problem few weeks ago, changed recovery and new recovery didn't want to read exFat card...

I suggest you uninstall samsung kies first.
Proceed here uninstall old samsung usb drivers too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038555
There is 3 methods of installing it clearly written there with step by step instructions. Hope with this method your pc recognize your phone.
If that method fails.
Like many said you have to manually insert rom files into your external sd card using a reader. I hope your problem is not similar to this guy

Hi,
Tried various USB cables and nada. Due to this Odin, Kies or anything will else will not recognise the handset and that's on a PC and a Laptop.
As for the Mass Storage in recovery, the version of CMR doesn't have that option otherwise i would have tried!
I was focusing more on trying to mount the Ext SD card on CMR. Is there any suggestions on this? Tried NTFS and Fat 32 with varying cluster sizes but not happening. Any other suggestions?

Fat32 should work, not sure about NTFS... Did u tried another card? Or removing battery and reinserting after SD card format?
Thanks for all the suggestions.... Had a family emergency.
Tried everything, i now think that there is a hardware issue with the phone as its a Code 43 error whenever i try to update the driver so the handset can talk to my PC. Seen as this option looks fooked i can only now and try to figure why the Ext SD wont mount on CMR and how to resolve it.
If i can;t then no option but to send it to the big warehouse in the Sky,
Just to exclude, did you tried another SD card?
