Hi all,
I tried to charge my GS2S and it went dead. Well, almost.
It's stuck on the welcome screen. Won't go to Recovery Mode, but still goes to Download Mode.
I've followed the instructions on TheAndroidSoul about how to install the CWM Recovery for this phone (can't post a link it seems) but got a "failed" result. I've tried three times at least and I get "failed" again and again.
Any idea what could be wrong and how do I get around it?
Thanks in advance!
Get stock firmware for country/carrier from Samfirmware (not 4.0.4 if you intend to root your phone in the future), flash with Odin in download mode. How ? Thread stickied near top of Q&A titled 'Flash stock firmware' has instructions. Problems with Odin flash ? Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General section has all the info you need to get a successful Odin flash & a 'clean slate'.
As to how instructions on another site will/won't work, no idea & won't be looking at those.. Not interested in what's on other sites given most of the info found on them has probably been posted here in the first instance anyway. You don't need other sites when you have a resource like this one at your disposal.
Once you're back at stock, you can then re-root your phone & flash whatever custom rom/kernel you want again (maybe not do that until you're totally comfortable with whatever process you need to use first).

hi guys just been given a s2 by a mate to fix. need some help please. gor a message on screen saying firmware upgrade encountered a issue.please select recovery mode in kies and try again.. when i connect phone nothing happens. any ideas please
Flash a stock rom with Odin; this gets covered all the time here (as I said to someone in another thread a half hour ago). Go to Samfirmware & choose one for his carrier. Once you've done that, he can then check for that OTA update that barfed & try pulling it down again as per normal if the rom you flash isn't the most recent.
Pro tip - Try a more descriptive title, 'Help please' tends to limit the amount of help you'll end up getting.

so i've downloaded a file from samfirmware but every time i click on odin for the file the file is empty
Guides/tutorials stickied near the top of the General section (or search). As I said, this stuff has been covered many a time including recently.
Hint - Extract the tar.md5 from the zip you got from Samfirmware.

ok i've done that it says succeed.all i get now is low battery and samsung start up then shuts down
What told you that it was logical to title a topic in a help section as "HELP please"??
Hello Sir,
I can't install "I9100XWMS1_NeatROM_v5.4.2_Aroma.zip" on my Samsung galaxy sII I9100 in recovery mode.Cause i didn't find any option like instal rom SD.Here my mobile detail & recovery mode screen shot.
Please Help me to install This "9100XWMS1_NeatROM_v5.4.2_Aroma.zip" in my mobile.Thank you.
Um, you can't install it with Odin. Only with CWRecovery (you currently have stock recovery). You need to root your phone first. How ? Search. This has been asked/answered/covered/been done to death 108,961.358,023,196,082,475 times here over the past 2.5 yrs. However, as it's the start of a new week & I'm feeling generous, there's a thread stickied near the top of Q&A that has a very simple root method.
Also, I strongly recommend you go back & read the first page of the thread devoted to that rom slowly. I smell a broken phone coming on if you don't tread very carefully going forward.
Hi,
I am totally new to flashing phones, so I need your help. My aim is to flash my GT-I9100 (Vodafone UK) with Cynogen Mod Kitkat. Currently my phone has Android version of 4.1.2. I do not have root access to my phone and according to Cynogen Mode wiki, this is not necessary.
Apparently I can't post links before 10 posts, sorry I can't show the links from where I got the instructions.
I have 1st tried to flash a new recovery image so that Cynogen installation would be possible.
1) Heimdall Method as in the Cynogen Mode Wiki Page
2) Odin Method available on the internet.
In both I have been successful transferring the listed recovery images (6.0.4.7 and 6.0.2.9) to the phone but in both cases whenever the phone is restarted, the device is stuck with Samsung GT-I9100 logo and yellow triangle. I can't access to recovery mode at all.
I had to go back to the download mode again (luckily this worked) and flashed with the original firmware in each cases to recover the device.
I am also confused about the version of CWM as when I go to the original website, above versions are not listed under Galaxy S2.(Only 4.0.1.5 and 5.8.1.5)
Am I missing something here?
Many thanks.
hey,here's the instructions you need

Hi
Many thanks for your reply. Believe me I have gone through many posts and search before posting here. I have also checked the link but can't understand why I am encountering yellow triangle after CWM flashing. Am I suppose to flash something else as well together with the version 6.0.4.7?
Don't bother about that yellow triangle,it's normal. When you'll be done flashing your rom,use TriangleAway app to remove it.

But after I flash with CWM I can't get access to the recovery to install the rom? The only option I have is the download mode.
I thought after flashing with CWM the stock rom would work normally and flashing with custom rom could be done later if needed.
Just to iterate again, when I flash the recovery, phone does not switch on but stuck with yellow triangle. It does not go in recovery mode. I have to re flash the stock rom to save device.
Could it be you're flashing only a temporary recovery, without an included kernel?Just guessing you may well be.FYI S2 doesn't have a separated partition for recovery as some other phones has.
As you're currently using a stock rom,the easiest way IMO would be flashing Philz kernel first(from Original Android Development section). Then follow the instructions from the CM11 thread.

It is possible but instructions on cynogenmod wiki page does not advise about a kernel. It gives a link to the recovery file and after recovery is flashed, I should be able to use volume up + home + power to access the recovery. Which I can't.
You just got given the best bit of advice anyone could give you, you have no clue whatsoever, and you're questioning said advice ?
Forget the CM Wiki. As you've just been told, any recovery flashed independently of the kernel on the I9100 will only persist until the next reboot. The easiest way to achieve what you're trying to achieve is to flash a custom kernel which will give you root+permanent CWM, and go from there.
You can either follow the advice you've been given & get this done the easy way, or you can continue to fumble around for days/weeks/months/whatever.
No skin off our noses either way *shrugs*
And no, I'm not going to apologise for being a bit 'rough' with you. People who come here with no idea, ask for help & either don't follow great advice they're given or argue the point about things they have no understanding of **** me to tears & get zero empathy.
My phone won't go passed the 'Samsung' black screen. I have tried flashing a stock rom with Odin. I have tried using emergency recovery in KIES but the phone is not being picked up by it. I flashed and rooted the phone to unlock the SIM yesterday and everything was fine until I hard reset it (instead of factory resetting it by accident) because I plan to sell it to a friend on a different network.
I've been at this for nearly 20 hours now following numerous different tutorials and I have no idea what to do now. I am new to this kind of thing but I think I'm definitely out of my depth here. I can still get the phone into download mode so I know it's salvageable.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General, 3 part firmware linked to in thread, download, flash with Odin (this will wipe your phone). Failure to flash ? Go through the troubleshooting steps in the thread over & over & over (if necessary; all of them, including multiple PC's, if you don't fix it with the info in that thread, you won't be fixing it).
There's no easy fix here; if it's recoverable (and most of these are), they're fixed with perseverance. Those which aren't recoverable are NAND corrupted & require a motherboard replacement to fix.
Edit - Also, I presume we're talking about an I9100 ? If you have any other model, do not flash that 3 part firmware I referred to above, you will brick your phone if you have another device & you flash it.

Wow, thank you for such a quick response! Yes it is an I9100. I should have been clearer. I'll give that a shot before I try anything else then. Thanks again.
So here I have the S2 running stock 4.1.2 unrooted. The baseband is I9100XXMS2 (Hungarian) and the build number is JZ054K.I9100XWLSS.
The goal is to flash CM11 or OmniROM or AOKP or whatever I will find suitable.
Please keep in mind, that this is NOT my phone, that's why I have no idea how to do stuff with it.
So here are the questions.
1: Can I simply get Odin and flash the CF Root as PDA?
2: Is the Odin 1.85 version in the CF Root thread compatible with this firmware?
3: Which package should I use from the CF Root thread? I'm asking because the kernel version does not have that 2 letters and 1 number the thread is referring to. The kernel version only says (3.0.31 - 1156082 [email protected] #3 SMP PREEMPT) and the date.
4: After getting CF Root and it's CWM, can I flash another version of CWM directly from CWM like I can do with other phones?
5: If yes, which CWM package is the most reliable that is compatible with KitKat?
Firstly, you should be searching for this information. You've been here more than long enough to know every single question you could possibly ask has already been asked/answered many times. As this phone was released 3 yrs ago, this is absolutely the case.
Having said that, I will supply you brief/limited answers to your questions (I am not providing detailed answers for the above reason; I'm not doing your work for you).
1) Don't use CFRoot. It's been superceded. Search for the PhilZ thread & use that (do not ask me 'what kernel do I use ?'; read the thread).
2) You should be able to use any version of Odin, however, if you find one version doesn't work, try another. Also, if you have problems with any Odin flash, refer to Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in General.
3) Not applicable due to the answer I gave in 1.
4) No, you cannot flash another version of CWM independently of anything else like you can on other phones. Recovery is 'baked' into the kernel on the I9100 & not in a separate partition like other phones, so any recovery you flash independently will only persist until the next reboot. You're stuck with whatever CWM version the kernel uses.
If you want a particular CWM version, you need to run a kernel that has it (read the kernel thread to find out which version it uses).
5) This information (which CWM version at a minimum you need to flash these roms) is absolutely common knowledge now & has been asked/answered 100's of times at least over the past few mths since these roms were released; search.
Edit - Whether it's your phone or not is irrelevant. If you're going to mod this person's phone for them, everything I've said holds true. If they're going to do it themselves, they would be much better served by taking the time to actually learn this stuff themselves. I'm tipping a busted phone & a lot of tears if you pass on the information I've given you.
I realize that I could have searched more. The reason I got stuck at the CF Root thread is the sticky thread that says read before doing anything.
Thank you for clarifying the rest.
But after reading the Philz thread, once again, I'm having some problems figuring out which package to choose.
I found: << 26.05.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v5.05.0 with CWM 6.0.3.2 based recovery >>
XWLSS (fixed for bootloop), which should be good because it's the XWLSS firmware (for safety I checked samfirmware).
Clicking on that takes me to a devhost list. The baseband is XXMS2. The closest to this on the list is the XWMS2.
Quote from Philz thread: "mixed, often doesn't matter for close regions. For example, XW and XX are often interchangeable"
Often... Does that mean it will work?
Another question: Is there a way to not just hide the triangle at boot but reset the flash counter if I use Odin?

Flash xwms2 based philz kernel and you will be rooted and will get the permanent CWM. It will work.
After flashing via odin if you want to get rid of from the yellow triangle then use triangle away app which will remove it and reset the counter to 0. But you can flash philz via stock recovery which will not give you a yellow triangle.
