No. They are lost forever, as they are unique for each single device.

I wouldn't worry much about it. You'll not be able to buy overpriced music & video from Sony, and you'll loose the artifical Bravia colour "enhancement"
I wiped my TA partition 9 months ago and I haven't missed it at all.

You are right, though, if he likes or uses of that stuff, he will lose it... And, I like Bravia Engine.

If you just want root access then just use gingerbreak, bootloader unlocking is not needed. Also trackid will no longer work if the bootloader is unlocked.

I discovered a funny side effect when i was trying to fix my phone, I used divinci to flash a new image using their software and 10 credits given to me by Nielk (thanks mate)
It didnt fix the phone but did relock the bootloader oddly
Make TA backup before unlocking bootloader. When you want to re-lock it, write original TA back.

You keep referring to "keeping a backup of your TA". Still, to the best of my knowledge, we have no tools for that yet :-O Unfortunately.

Yes, I constantly do that because that's the most important part of Sony Ericsson S1 phone. If everyone here had original TA backups before unlocking bootloader, there won't be any need for 16 pages of discussion on how to fix bricked Plays and still not find a 100% working solution.

Here's my thought:
We first need free TA backup and write.
Then someone with fully working play should make TA backup (Both a and i Play)
Then I find out the addresses of security zone in TA.
You backup security zone.
Write TA backed up from working phone.
Write your security zone.
That worked on every SE phone so far with GDFS/TA.
What is the TA you're referring to?
Trim Area - part of the phone which contains unique and important data like IMEI, Sim locks, radio data, etc...
Ah, I see. It seems a lot like the /efs folder in the Sammy Galaxy S.

Yes, something like that, only thing is that TA has signed parts so it's almost impossible to unlock phone for free at the moment.

[Q] Is it worth it unlocking bootloader and losing Bravia Engine?

Is it worth it to unlock your bootloader because you lose some things like apps and bravia engine....
Do you have any problems on your device with unlocked bootloader?

The only reason to unlock the bootloader is to run custom roms, we don't even need it unlocked for recovery now.
You can also restore the TA partition to regain xreality on stock roms.

Since we're on the topic - I'm on stock 290 but using the custom kernel (for root). I also have custom recovery. Will restoring TA be safe?

I have unlocked my BL and to be honest I can't tell any difference with X-reality deactivated. But I mostly use QuickPic to view photos and MX Player for videos. I do not regret unlocking.
There is a difference but sadly is not always for the best from my previous experience.
Some things look very nice, almost HD like but very bad video quality for example just seems to look even worst lol

DRM Keys for sony x-reality engine

So for the ones of us who did not backup TA partition we lost our drm keys which takes away the x reality engine bravia engine etc enhancement you really notice this when you play videos on netfix etc. Now what i want to know is there anyway in the world we can get our drm keys back i mean anything is possible nothing is impossible?
Update i just used some recovery tools and found the backup i did a while ago which got deleted from my recyle bin i have now managed to recover it phew when i go back to stock i can now have my drm keys back.
You should probably upload it to a couple of cloud services. Dropbox and Drive maybe?

My first Ultra i backed up the TA.
My second Ultra i didn't. Just didn't really care. x-reality is a crock. I do however like the bravia2 engine that I've adapted. Like blue said.
It still works on my second Ultra. So there's that.

well... x-reality is just a series of colour filters or settings. You could get the same effect by doing it manually.
and if sony and their GPe ROM have it, then I'm sure its legit. But at the time it was only for a pure sony ROM

Yes, the GPe has X-Reality and Sony's sound enhancements. The issue with X-Reality on it is that it's simply impossible for us to use it. With us, I mean the ones who doesn't have an original GPe Ultra, but have flashed the GPe ROM. We need an unlocked bootloader to flash the ROM, and you may know that an unlocked bootloader means no TA partition with the DRM keys, meaning no functioning X-Reality.

Xperia Z2 Bootloader unlocking tool side-effects?

Since this question is going to be asked quite a lot of times over the coming few months, I wanted to make sure this question is addressed properly.
What all features are disabled once you unlock the bootloader on the Xperia Z2?
1) X-Reality is disabled. If you take the backup of the TA partition, you can restore it after re-locking the bootloader to enable this functionality.
2) Bionic image processor -- Not sure. I have read conflicting reports. I am looking for a *confirmed* answer here.
User inputs will be highly appreciated.

So what happens to the camera functionality? isn't it affected?

Root my Z Ultra GPe

I have a Z Ultra GPe running 4.4.4 stock everything never wanted to root until the latest 4.4.4 OTA due to the low speaker volume, I can barely hear the phone ring anymore, I see there is a volume fix but that requires root and that's what I want to do; root.
As far as I understand and please correct me if I'm wrong, there are two ways to root :
1. Unlock bootloader, install dual recovery, change kernel, root.
2. Use towelroot apk to root the phone without modifying bootloader, recovery or kernel
I have seen that many people are facing camera problems when using method 1 due to unlocking the bootloader in addition to not receiving OTA updates after using method 1 (can't wait for Android L OTA)
If I root using method 2 will I avoid facing any camera problems and still receive OTA updates?
If there is another method I don't know about to fix the low volume issue or root my GPe please let me know, most important thing is that my camera is not affected and I continue to receive OTA updates.
Sent from my C6806_GPe using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Method 2 is the best way now that we have a root exploit. It wont modify the kernel/boot loader etc so should allow OTAs. As this is not unlocking the BL it shouldn't effect the camera (it is only 4.4.4 that this happened on), and you can back up the TA if you do ever want to unlock the BL. I would do a backup of the TA anyway as it will give you an easy root method should there not be one available on 5.0
in short: should work
Can you please elaborate, I don't know what TA is and why or how to back it up?!

TA - Trim Area, It is where the DRM keys and other things are kept. It looks like this is what is breaking the camera in 4.4.4 with an unlocked BL. If you back up the TA you can restore it and thus relock the bootloader. There is a tool called TA backup linked in one of the stickies in the general section.
If in the future you cant get root to do a TA backup it would be handy to already have one. Then you can unlock the BL, flash supersu, restore TA and have a rooted phone with locked BL (and intact DRM keys)
Thanks, will back up TA and root using towelroot

Sorry this may seem like a stupid question but I want to understand how this works;
If I root my device using the Towelroot exploit and my bootloader is locked and recovery and kernel are stock, will my TA or DRM keys be affected!?
I surely will backup my TA like you advised but I just wanna make sure I understand how it works as I am coming from a Samsung and HTC background so this is all new to me.
and one last question please (sorry for asking so many questions)
Do I root first then backup, or do I backup then root?

You have it right, your TA (hence DRM keys) won't be affected by the root process.
Root then back up the TA partition. You need root to pull the disk image off the phone, that's why GPe users that unlocked/rooted before towelroot are in the position with a buggered camera that seems to be looking for DRM keys.
Thnx again!

Z Ultra Gpe released on Dec 13 2013. According to Google Gpe devices "traditionally" are updated for "about" 18 months. There is speculation that Gpe program may be winding down in favor of the "Silver" program. I would expect to see it updated to L but there are no guarantees.
google would be hurting their brand if they pulled updates after only 8 months. Would you buy another google branded phone if they did that, be it GPe or Silver? This is why I cant see them not supporting well in to L
Agree with blueether, Google will probably update the ZU GPE to Android L, but that may be the end of the updates we get
