I'm sure it's locked at the moment. But, given time, I'm willing to bet it will be cracked.
Its locked and AT&T wont let you unlock the bootloader of the HTC One. Similar to last year with the HTC One X. This decision may be over turned again though,
I also purchased the unlocked Dev edition, it's only a matter of time before we can find a workaround for At&t's BS.

Your statement sounds like you're stating a fact. How do you know it wont be unlock-able? have any insider info? The X+ that came out after the X was unlock-able from day 1. I canceled the ATT pre order and ordered the dev version to be on the safe side, but fact is nobody knows at this time.

I pre ordered through att and I have faith that it will be able to be unlocked with time if it isn't able to immediately through the dev site. I hope.
when i got my oneXL it was locked down and it quickly became unlocked i have no dought the same will happen with the htcone
Well this sucks, coming from sprint and had no idea that att doesn't allow htcdev.... Not sure what to do about my preorder or even getting this phone now.

I'm thinking that with the $100 card I'll get from HTC I'll just get a Nexus 4 or wait for Google I/O and get the 5(whatever it will be called). The One can be my backup phone and if it ever gets a root hack I'll do it then.
So my question is if it is locked will we still be able to say at least root the phone from day one? Atm I'm more concerned with root vs roms

Nobody can answer that question yet. A root exploit will need to be found (or some way to unlock the bootloader without root). But nobody is going to put the work in, until the AT&T version is released (since all other versions can be bootloader unlocked).

Incorrect. 2 different perm root exploits, and 1 temp root were found on the One X so far (HTC kept patching the root exploit with each new OTA, so devs kept finding other methods).

I fact, the exact opposite of what you said is the case on the AT&T One X. You actually need root (at least temp root) before you can unlock the bootloader. There might be some way (exploit) to unlock the bootloader without root. But no such method had been found yet.

Awesome. I remain hopeful for then.
According to Paul O'brien (who from what I understand is a pretty solid source) AT&T has locked down the One's bootloader, like it did with the One X. Apparently that turned out to be a huge mess. Was totally planning on getting this, now I'm strongly reconsidering...

I've been on the One X forums from just about the start, and I'm not sure I would call it a "huge mess". A bootloader unlock method was discovered and posted by an XDA dev a little over 2 weeks after the device was released.
What turned out to be a bit more of a mess, is that root was needed to get the bootloader unlock, and HTC kept patching the existing root exploit with every firmware update.
This is indeed disappointing. But I won't believe it 100% until the phone is actually released, and people try to unlock the bootloader. Even then, the phone will be a popular one, and I have faith that the devs here will crack it.

Really though, the amount of modders who need SOFF to do what they want is like less than 5% of the mod community. Root typically handles most issues. Unlocked bootloader is just that barrier above root.
Though, I'm kind of mad that HTC isn't sticking it to ATT on this and telling them to bugger off. Tmobiles is unlocked...

I don't know much about the typical bootloader unlocking methods, but saw this recent article about unlocking newer Qualcomm-based Motorola phones. Not that this method will work on the AT&T One, but hopefully a similar method can be found if none of the current tricks work.

My comment had to do more with informing the previous poster what actually happened on the One X (that he seemed to mostly only know about 2nd hand), rather than speculating on what HTC has done on this upcoming phone. As we know, HTC is a tricky bugger, and I won't even begin to try to guess what security enhancements they have up their sleeve this time around!

You can root, install custom recovery, and flash custom ROMs with an unlocked bootloader.
S-off allows some other things, such as modding hboot, and flashing radios. But its not needed for flashing custom ROMs.
you can already unlock the bootloader+root etc..

Aha! gotcha, Well. I tried to order the Dev edition but it got out of stock.. so i have no choice but to get one from ATT and hope for the best : D
Yeah you can flash roms etc..
But who wants to manually flash the kernel every time you want to update a rom?
I would like to just put my rom on my phone and flash it. Simple as that
Regardless this is XDA and i trust the devs here will do something to get AT&T users rooted.
mine will be going back so fast if its not unlockable
Sprint and tmobile versions are unlockable
There is no surprise about ATT locking the boot loader. Why do you think HTC is selling a developer edition that is using ATT bands. They solved it because there are a few of us who root our phones etc. Most people who buy phones don't do any of this XDA stuff
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I see it this way, with the $100 rebate and the HDMI device I am getting from HTC and ATT the one will be pretty much free. I am switching from Sprint which I had originally switched to with hopes of buying the Nexus 4. Since they stopped doing Nexus on CDMA this is my move back. The One will turn into a backup phone and the next Nexus will become my main. If a Nexus doesn't come out in the next 4 months I'll just buy a Nexus 4 for now. I'll just never do OTAs on the One until a root is found or just sell the thing when I get a Nexus.
Btw, who is this Steven Bell guy? Does he have an HTC One from ATT that he tried to unlock?
Im glad i got the dev edition. I canceled ATT pre order day after i ordered. My Dev edition says backorder now but says shipment scheduled Tomorrow the 10th.
Either some lazy people here.. Or trolls.. It only takes an additional few seconds to flash a kernel if you need it. Those few seconds certainly wouldn't keep me from owning this device. This phone looks like it'll have a lot of Dev presence. S-off might not be far off. :victory:
I dont know who Steve bell is (guy paul obrien quoted) And how he would know The ATT is locked since its not out yet. I guess he's credible somewhat if Paul is repeating it.
Hmmm....im really starting to second guess this phone....im confused why att locks down HTC phones but not other android phones like Samsung? Sorry really new to HTC phones....

I have an HTC DNA softwafe version 2.04.605.2 710 RD and I was just notified of a new software update 2.06.605.1 710RD.
Here is the official documentation from Verizon:
"Improvements have been made to sim card detection".
I haven't had any problems with my DNA so far so I'm not sure if this would be a fix for other people. Also I'm not sure how this would affect current root status or if there's any hidden updates besides the one Verizon listed.
I'm not rooted so I'm trying to get it downloaded and off my device to upload to the devs but no luck yet. I have the SIM card issues so I'm fine with eventually installing, but I don't want to loose the chance to download the file first.
Here is the OTA for whoever wants it. Its not rooted. Its straight from the download (NOTHING DONE TO IT) https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3OJJDTvOy8vdkhZVWpVRWlJMzA/edit?usp=sharing
Can you upload it somewhere else, I don't want to have to register with 4shared to download it.

Security holes such as signature check typos, unintended memory access, or workarounds to getting certain write functions working where they aren't supposed to are our "exploits." The updates need to be thoroughly analyzed for security holes if they are to be used for exploits.
Think twist brought up a good point though. People that don't really need the update should hold off I guess I'm stating the obvious but if some exploit was found and us stuck on ota before the new one was received could install some sort of modified one if these guys found and holes in this.

The DNA recently got upgraded via OTA to sense 5, 4.2.2, and root/unlock ready. It is slated to get sense 5.5 and 4.4 kit Kat by march via ota. I would go with this phone, it's my favorite phone all around in a long time with the exception of the Sony Xperia Z but that's not available on Verizon.

It has not yet gotten 4.3 and probably won't I think if we get a update now it'll be 4.4 or just updates for bug fixes. As for dev support it's there all the way kicking butt and taking names lol. Same with the GS4, the updates killed unlock. Fortunately I was able to unlock it befoer the update. In some way I feel sad for those who later bought the phone but couldn't unlock it.
I'm glad jcase and beaups have an unlock method for this phone that hasn't been thwarted. I'm surprised the DNA's continued unlockability, good porcessor, and great screen hasn't attracted far more people.
DNA will not receive official 4.3 and will leapfrog to 4.4 by end of march (as said by HTC on Twitter) pending Verizon approval. It is still 50/50 chance of us seeing 4.4 as Verizon has to approve it.
Verizon loves their devices locked down, so I am sure they are extremely peeved that rumrunner released so soon for our device. This means it may not receive 4.4 unless HTC finds a way to lock it down harder.

Hey all,
Just picked up a Verizon HTC One Max and would like to root it so I can use AdFree and Root Explorer. Maybe load Cyanogen sometime in the future but not a priority right now. I noticed very little separation of posts, Sprint, VZW, ATT, etc., and I would like to make sure I have the correct and simplest way for my Verizon device.
Firewater S-off
Also, where can I download the latest HTC One Max drivers?
Thanks in advance for your help.
As far as i know, Verizon does not allow unlocking of the MAX via HTCDev. Firewater requires unlocked/temp rooted device to S-Off. You should look at rumrunner - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525375
Drivers - first link on Google - https://www.google.com/search?q=htc+drivers+&oq=htc+drivers
From what I remember seeing, not unlockable via htcdev, which is needed for S-OFF.
From rumrunner site
Unlock your bootloader (devices that are blocked by htcdev only, e.g. Verizon HTC One)
Edit: Looks like it should work, according to site and other users, but via htcdev is a nogo

Not true. Rumrunner does both s-off and unlock in one shot on vzw. Did mine that way. To be honest, its even better this way as you aren't broadcasting to HTC that you are modifying the phones software.
To be perfectly clear again...rumrunner requires nothing other than a stock os phone on vzw. Have done two vzw maxx's this way.

I think you: 1) need to check what you quoted and 2) need to reread what you meant to quote.

No. Mine is correct. One post was already corrected. Yours has not (yet).
Your post is still bad info bud....please edit so we have this op getting good info.
@pradeepv had it right because he mentioned both rumrunner and firewater.
Vzw maxx only needs stock rom to s-off at this time. No need for HTC Dev unlock.

I quoted pradeep which is the second post and is entirely accurate. I am on verizon and worked with beaups to finalize rumrunner to get it working on the verizon model. That is still currently the best and easiest.

The way its phrased explains why the op is confused.
Op simply needs to run rumrunner.
Beaups has it spelled out like this on rumrunners page
Your device must be HTCDEV unlocked or rooted*unless using rumrunner with a device blocked by htcdev (e.g. m7wlv)
So no temp root or unlock required on op's part prior to running rumrunner.

No. The way you read it is why you were confused. I (and likely the OP) read it just fine.

You are correct. Pradeep did break out firewater and rumrunner. The other guy didn't and edited his post. My bad.

Hey all,
Just picked up a Verizon HTC One Max and would like to root it so I can use AdFree and Root Explorer.

Use rumrunner s-off unless your One Max is running Hboot 2.47... If it is, use firewater tool. Will s-off and unlock in one fell swoop.
Try this link for HTC Drivers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2089508
