Any active user that may share opinions on the 16 gb storage?
Considering with it is no longer possible to move apps from/to external sd-card, wondering what amount of internal storage reserved for the apps.
I m htc OneX owner at the moment (international, 32gb) and it has roughly about 2gb for apps, 25 for user and 5 occupied by system.
267 mb out of 2gb app storage is free despite many apps in the phone storage (i.e. internal sd) in my case. I don't know exactly the real size of all those apps though, but surely it is not less than 4 or 5 gb including all their data and cache.
Would be great If someone could share how it is looked in Z2 with a screenshot. Thanks in advance.

Here is mine (oneX with nearly 80 user apps installed).
I got the Z1 but I'm pretty sure this is how it looks in the Z2 as well
As you can see you get almost 12gb of space out of the box and you can use them for anything you want, there are no restrictions, my older xperia had a limit of 2gb for apps too which sucked, glad they got rid of that.

When I read the specs of the phone it said out of the total 16GB, 12 will be usable.

So I noticed it says this phone has 16gb of memory, but when I look at the phone storage it says 9.75gb total and internal store 2gb. Is this another memory thing like the desire z / g2 having 4gb of memory but only 1.5gb user accessible?
Same here.
yep it is blocked off to OS and stuff
mine say the same. not sure how they keep getting away with this.
Theoretically it's 16... Then they partition for the OS and read only files. All storage devices are the same way.
They could have advertised 10 gb and be a little more realistic
I have been so busy catching up with all the amazing stuff Da_G has been pumping out (thanks!) that I didn't even take a look at this until now. I am showing that we only have 733MB of avaliable RAM. That is a far cry from 1024MB.
I am seeing 733MB w/ both Android System Info and with the built-in Task Manager.
Does anyone know if we indeed have 1024MB of RAM and... if it is just assigned else where?
Yes we have 1GB every phone has RAM missing because the system is holding it.
I remember one time the OS didn't support that much not sure if that's the case now but the phone has 1GB to my knowledge and.what I've read

Just like memory... Do we really have 16gb? Its never what they say... All marketing!

I have also read that is has 1GB everywhere, but missing 291MB seems like an awful lot.
I beleive my Atrix showed 897MB. I just seems like an awful lot 'mssing' w/ the Note.

I am with you on that! Makes me
I noticed the same, it's showing short but using the same app(system tuner pro) on my G2 it showed the correct 512mb.
It's not false marketing; it's fact. There is 1GB of RAM in the phone. I'm pretty sure the rest of the RAM is used by the GPU. My GS2 has the same thing, shows about 800MB of RAM available to apps.
What does it matter? I usually have 3-500MB of free RAM. Have you ever managed to fill the RAM with processes? Do you know anyone who has? Android clears old apps from memory even when there is enough free so I have never even come close to filling my RAM.
Graphics memory
As with any computer your phone has a gpu which needs graphics memory and because the gpu is integrated (SOC) it takes its memory off the top. This can be seen with any computer you have with integrated graphics it will section off some memory for your gpu.
As for the flash memory space many issues can take it down such as the file system, operating system, it just depends but trust me before the phone was turned on and android installed it had 16gb of memory and 1gb of ram
I'm about 100% CPU and GPU can't share ram as they do completely different tasks. They could have just added the cram and the ram to get 1GB though... But otherwise, the missing ram is from system tasks and the OS.

Do we have a reference or any proof of this?
And to the post directly above this, any computer that does not have a dedicated graphics card uses shared system memory, just like our phones. 733MB is just quite a bit away from 1024MB.
they can and do use the same memory because they are the same soc aka system on chip. all this is integrated.
So if you built a PC yourself and loaded it with 2gig RAM and booted into windows it would have 2 gig FREE memory?

I am not talking about FREE. I am talking about the system as a whole. Do we really have 1GB of RAM? Where it is being used I am not so concerned about at this point, but it may help us figure out if we do indeed have 1GB (Where is the remaing 291MB assigned).
The missing 291 is being used by android..to load the launcher Widgets and everything else in the background.

i have international version of note.its same way on this one.the missing ram is held by system tasks.as for 16gb storage memory.if you wipe all area on usb storage .u will have 16gb but not a working phone.another thing about free ram.dont use task manager to stop apps.all it does is make the phone lag.leave everything running.

You have 300-500 MB FREE ram? My note is bone stock and I'm running at 400/700 MB RAM (meaning 300 MB free). This is also when I "Clear memory" too. Something wrong with my apps?

Two dozen open apps on mine right now, and it shows 283 MB used, 302 MB free.
On my AT&T gs2 I consistantly show 830 to 850 MB free. On my note I only see a lil over 700. How can this have less ram than my gs2? I have over 80 app on my gs2 and less than half that on my note!!!

Hi,
Im thinking of getting the xperia U but the lack of SD card slot is really putting me off. whats more gsmarena says that out of the 8GB available only 4 GB can be used.
Why?
whats in the remaining 4 GB, no ROM file is that big to take up 4GB. is there a way to unlock all memory for use? If that happens I would love it as I am more than content with 8GB of memory
Thank you
Its divided by
4GB = user available (for photo, music etc) as SDcard.
2GB = for application your installed as Internal memory
2GB = for android system

the size can be abit of a problem but if you use it wisely you'll be ok at thats how i see it
(tip! if you want more space when you do buy the phone make sure you format the sd of it to gain the whole 4gb as half of it is in use give or take)
Hi. I've got a HTC One x with cyanogenmod 10.0.0-evita firmware. It's the US version so it's only 16 gig storage with 2 gig of that devoted to apps. I formatted the internal storage memory through bootloader - usb mass storage - laptop. Everything works correctly but it says the drive is only 10 gig instead of 14. I was wondering what happened to the missing 4 gig? .
Also i'm filling up the 2 gig of apps storage up fast. Will the phone start using 10 gig drive once the 2 gig of app space full or do i need to worry about allocating space?

first wrong thread this is htc one thread
second that 4gb is for system you cant use it
Hey there.
I'm a little confused regarding the internal storage of my VZW Note II. It has 16gb, which I know is less when formatted... there's around 10gb available for apps and files. Isn't that the partition sizing for Samsung's massively bloaty ROM? I'm running AOSP; is there any way to reclaim some of that space? Or I've seen some stuff about dual-booting, but there are way too many disparate GNoteII forums on XDA and I can't find any specific font of information. Is that a way to more efficiently use space? I'm just consistently crunched for space since nothing can use the external SD really, and 10gb goes away quickly nowadays.
Thank you kindly.
I would like to know the same thing. Just flashed and rom and set everything and now I only have about 700MB free space. I don't even run lots of apps. It's the miscellaneous that takes up majority of the space.

Thats 700mb freespace for the system partition which is plenty...apps reside on the internal sd which you should have 10-12gb free.

Exactly. That's 700mb to /system, then the rest goes to app storage and the emulated internal SD card. My phone reports that at 10.33gb total; 10.33gb + 700mb = 11.03gb total known storage across all known partitions. Doesn't that seem a little low?
I know my phone has 2gb of ram but what I am speaking of is the 16gb internal SD storage.

That's what we're speaking of as well. Your phone has 16gb of internal storage which is split across system files and app storage. Any space left over is your "internal SD card". It's how Android works post-Ice Cream Sandwich.
no its not low thats normal...
Well, I know our "16gb" cards are only 14.9gb, marketing considers 1gb = 1,000mb's, but it's really 1024 mb's. So really if you do the math, 16gb by marketing definition equals 14.9gb in reality (16*1,000^3/1,024^3). That explains 1gb at least.
I'd imagine the rest is the baseband and radio software, all that? Is the touchwiz framework always left on the phone even after a full internal format?
How much available space does a "16gb" Nexus 4 have on first boot?

Ah. I did not realize that the RAM was part of that 16gb as well, I thought it was dedicated. That explains it. Thanks

Where'd you see that?
Well according to the email notification I got from XDA, droidstyle's response was:
"no its not low thats normal... The rom is 2gb + 2gb of ram + all of the apps leaves arouns 11gb free."
then when I went to reply that second part wasn't there anymore? But I assume droidstyle is right? 14.9 - 2.0 - 2.0 = 10.9, so... closer?

It seems weird, but I think you're right. It's not only the most logical and mathematically accurate solution, but thinking back on it I believe that's how my poor old Galaxy Nexus functioned as well, it was just far less noticeable since the Gnex had 32gb of memory and only took 1gb of RAM, vs. 16 - 2.

I have a 32 ultra SD, so I'm pretty set. Currently I have 4.9 GB available on the internal drive. I like to keep a clean drive. If you download music, most if not all will go to the internal. I've looked for mp3 apps that direct the DL's to the ext.SD, but have only found one, and that one didn't work. I believe cache goes on the internal too. Every time you download a ROM like meanbean, liquid smooth, they place a folder on the internal drive. They're empty, but they take up space.
I think the ram is part of the internal.

Oh I have a 32gb Class-10 µSD card in my phone right now. The problem I'm facing is that any sort of app storage can't be moved to external SD... I have one or two pretty massive games and a lot of apps that love to cache reserves of data, and it adds up. I only have about 1.2 gb free storage after clearing all caches, without really any other files to speak of besides a few pictures. Oh well, I can deal. I was just spoiled with storage on the GNex.
