Hello all,
I've just gotten an Xperia S and my previous phone was the X8. As some of you might know that the X8 is very outdated and it doesn't have all these new cool features, when I first came into this forum I do not understand a single thing
So I would like to ask a few questions that has arose when I looked through the Android Development forum. Namely:
1. What is sytem.img? Is it a ROM, firmware or what ? I know this also applies to Xperia 2011 models, but I do not own them.
2. What is the bootloader issue that everyone has been raging about? And is it true that DooMLord has fixed it in his kernel?
3. What is firmware and I heard there is SG generic Italy generic etc... In X8 I think the firmware changes with each ROM but on this phone it doesn't seem so. Why would you want to flash stock firmware when you can flash custom ROMs?
4. Can Xperia S bootloader be unlocked by test point, so that DRM keys are not damaged?
5. How to root this phone? I know no one has found an exploit yet, but I read on DooMLord's thread that his kernel auto-roots the phone, and that we can flash prerooted system.img(what the heck is that) and flash a pre-rooted image(what. All this is really confusing and I really hope I can get help on this!!
6. Just checking, kernel can be boot.img, kernel.sin and kernel.elf right?
7. This is a list of terms I came across so far and I need some explaination on them.
-system.img
-firmware(just to clarify, because I thought I knew it until I read DooMLord's thread.
-fastboot drivers and fastboot binaries.
Yep I guess that's all. I do hope someone will take the time to answer these question. I'm sorry for being such a noob, but hey, everyone's got to start somewhere right? I'll be sure to thank you if you've helped me!
Every single question has been answered at least once, if not 20 times. When you use search you actually have to read too.

rooted - to have root access.
pre - before, earlier, first
Work it out
I guess that's reasonable but I searched in the forums. The replies were quite vague, or maybe jut too complicated and I couldn't understand. Hoping someone would like really explain what each feature does. Btw I've search for system.img everywhere yet could not find the answer
just go to the development section!!!!

1. It is an archive with all files on /system that can be flashed via fastboot.
2. This is fixed, but the fix itself is not public.
3. Stock firmwares appeared before custom ROMs and there are still only two custom ROMs that don't change much. So the stock firmware is good for average use if you don't want themes or something. There are different firmwares for different countries and carriers, customized with some local apps and/or bloatware.
4. No one tried it yet AFAIK, but DRM keys haven't been found useful.
5. You need to unlock bootloader and flash a prerooted image or DooMKernel. As I said before, system.IMG is an archive with all system files. Superuser app and su binary are added to prerooted images so that you can flash them and have instant root. DooMKernel also has these built in and it roots the device automatically on boot, so you can use it with any firmware. You can roll back to stock kernel and root will stick until you fully reflash your device.
6. The filename can be anything, what's important is what's inside.
7. Firmware is a set of files that are preinstalled on your phone. It includes Android, some media and applications.
Fastboot is a low level tool for flashing ROMs. The binary is fastboot.exe itself (fastboot ELF if you use *nix). The drivers are Windows specific files you need to make the OS recognize your device in fastboot mode.

I'm sorry for the late reply.
Yes you can flash the phone with an unbranded rom, you can even flash it with the monosim rom, if you don't want the dual sim function.
Yes I know a lot of people who did it (they liked the phone features bu they don't need the DS functionality.)

Well, ONE TOUCH Upgrade S 2.8.0 says that my soft is up to date so it didn't flash anything. What way of flashing did you mean? Nandroid backup or flashing with a tool. And do you know a place where to find any ROMs?
Thank you for reply
any thread on this phone?
Anyone has a rom for this phone? I can't use upgrade S coz it says I have latest ROM available... Is there any workaround for this ?
Hi, anyone can give me the folder "/system/app" of OTS it's urgent ...
Thanks beforehand.
I'm uploading...
Why do you need it ?
system/apps from One Touch Star:
http://www.sendspace.pl/file/1806088e22aecd902052976
I deleted some app by inadvertently and I haven't notifications...
Thank you for it but for the moment the server is full. :cyclops:
PS: Can you give me your "/system/build.prop", mine is so changed.. ?
Mine is also heavily changed... I can share it anyway but like tommorow (you should remind me via PM).
One guy should have sent me the clean prop but still got no message from him ...
Can anyone confirm for me they have been able to successfully install a custom recovery (like clockworkmod) or a custom ROM onto this phone?
I am looking to get a phone for 6 months of international travel coming up and this one or the One Touch Mini seems perfect. (I like this one better though cause it has an AMOLED screen = better battery life )

Ok well I installed CWM and rooted my phone. I went ahead and got this one. Let's see what's cooking...now if only I can get that boot.img...
I am very happy to report I have created a flashable rom(via CWM or TWRP) which is essentially the same as the default rom on the star, but it has some of the junk apps alcatel pre-loads on the phone like game-loft removed and SuperSU installed.
I created it by getting the firmware.info file for our device, creating a custom update-script (getting the correct partition mounts from the firmware.info) using some pointers from DorianX's AOTI Lite Rom update-script, taking the system directory and boot.img from a nandroid backup after a factory reset, and getting the custpack directory by using a root file explorer to copy it to my sd and subsequently my computer editing the custpack, and finally packaging it together via dsixda's kitchen.
I am still working on slimming it down a little more as there are apps in /system/ that can be removed as well, but I just wanted to see if creating a custom ROM was doable. And it seems it was after 3 days of experimenting
Also got rid of that default hideous white theme by changing a setting in the build.prop.
I can upload it if anyone would like me to.
Hi guys I'm the proud new owner of an Xperia z ultra, All i want to do is install cm 10.2 but like always luck is not on my side lol.
My phones fully stock on the latest firmware and im following a guide on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZCq0Bq4Bhs
Im not sure if i need to unlock my bootloader or anything like i had done with me Xperia Z.
Ive installed all the drivers in flashtool for my device etc. and when i connect my phone with volume up i get the solid blue light and flashtool shows " device connected in fastboot mode" but thats all.
I try to flash the .img file but when i reboot back into the system i go straight back to the stock rom?
I know im probably doing something completely stupid and will figure it out but some help would be really appreciated since ive ashamedly been using an iphone 5 for the last few months.
Update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So far ive rooted the phone and backed up my TA partition, do i need to unlock my bootloader to install a custom rom?
so far ive found that its possibly something to do with my drivers? because although it says device connected in flash tool it doesn't come up with any thing else like in the video tutorial?
Although i dont know what to do about that as ive installed all the right drivers?
Yes, you have to unlock the bootloader to flash custom ROMs. You don't have to unlock it if you're just flashing stock Roms, but you have to do it if you want to flash CM, ParanoidAndroid etc.

Ok thanks a lot ill get started on that now
Just take a look at this thread for guidance. 4th post is about unlocking bootloader and installing Recovery. Once you've installed Recovery you're ready to go and you can flash ROM's like you usually do.
I'm new to this whole custom rom thing and i would like to ask for some help. Right now, my phone is rooted and the bootloader has been unlocked.I have tried to install paranoid rom, cyanogenmod and carbon rom so far. I have tried to CWM and TWRP and every single time, i get an error. First time i got the status 7 error. After some searching, i learnt that i have to delete a line of code to get it to work. After i did that, i tried to flash again. This time, i just got an installation aborted error. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I downgraded my phone to C6802 and as a result, lost my LTE. But this was the only way i knew to root my Sony Xperia Z Ultra running 4.3. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks guys.
Getting LTE back
If you guys don't know how to help me, at least can you guys tell me how i can get LTE back? I dont mind losing root and relocking my bootloader. I just want LTE back. And yes, my phone has LTE capability. I've used LTE for the past 2 weeks.

LTE will return when you get on the correct ROM. as for flashing custom ROMs read the threads, the instructions are normally quite good
CM11 and the new carbon (any rom that is based on 4.3 or 4.4) need to be on 4.3 before flashing them

I just looked at 2 or three and the instructions weren't too bad...
Start at .xxx
fastboot a boot.ing with recovery if you don't have it
wipe as needed
flash .zip from recovery
reboot
Other than that read the sticky by @LordManhattan and read the thread for the rom

Hello guys,
Has anyone of you started any work or done any research on this cheap, but good tablet?
I'm willing to create a custom ROM for it, but I'm quite new in ROM making area, although I have experience with Linux, software development, etc.
So first of all I would need to root QV830 somehow, then copy current ROM, as there are none available to download, and then play long time with, say, Android 5.1 version and get it working on QV830, if possible.
This thread could be like knowledge base for this device or something.
Where would you recommend to start looking for rooting solution? I could try to create my own rooting app/procedure since I couldn't find anything for QV830 on this matter.
Thank you!
Hi,
I just bought a second-hand QV830 and I am in the same situation as you, wishing to get a custom ROM at hand.
So I thought about making a custom ROM but this is obviously a huge amount of work, especially if you have no experience in that.
From what I understand, one to compile a kernel with the right config. CM seems to have kernel for every device. I don't know if it's just different config or patched ones. Then integration of CM/android.
As for rooting, I simply used framaroot and choose Boromir, I think. Done ! I didn't even fear to brick it as I guess it just works or not. Am I wrong ?
To get a backup of current ROM, you just need to install a custom recovery like CWM with may be RomManager (?) (You don't even need root)

Thank you, zebul666 I managed to get the tablet rooted with Framaroot and Boromir setting, just as you said, but I'm still struggling to backup the current ROM. ROM Manager reboots into boot menu, but there are no backup options, only reboot device and reset ones.
Flashify app backs up current kernel and current stock (both weights 6.0 MB).
Also tried to copy /system folder with ES File Explorer with root permissions, but it always stops copying on run-as file.
Will keep trying, but if/when I will succeed, I have no clue what I'll be doing next
I understood that if you flash CWM with ROM Manager, this new recovery should enable you to make the nandroid backup. Has it failed for you or you did not do it ? I have not.
Now that you have root, you can already directly tweak the setup without custom ROM. For example, i have removed that annoying loud sound when it boots by renaming /system/media/bootaudio.mp3
If you wan to go the custom ROM way, there is tutoriel in this forum on how to compile a kernel and customizer rom

Has anyone found anything out about installing a custom recovery yet? I think if that could be established then rom development may begin.

Yes, I have had xposed on this device and it works well but you have to be cautious as to what you do because if you happen to mess it up, the fact that we haven't figured out how to put CWM on you can't flash the xposed recovery zip. So min short yes but be careful.
