Over the past few days I've had an issue where my XZU seems to stop recognising it's plugged in to a USB port. It will work fine then it stops charging and I can't see a device on Windows anymore. In other words it's as if it isn't plugged in anymore. Charging from AC still works normally.
I've tried unplugging the cable, swapping USB ports, rebooting XZU. The device won't mount as a mass storage device in CWM. Rebooting Windows is the only thing I've tried that fixes the issue but it happens again. So I gather it could be a Windows issue although I haven't changed anything on my Windows installation that I recall. I have however been flashing various firmwares onto my phone. ATM I'm using stock firmware and I *think* the issue has only happened with the stock firmware.
Edit: Now it's still happening when I reboot Windows :|
Can anyone suggest anything to try to fix this annoying problem?

Excellent thanks the issue seems to have been solved ... funnily enough I hadn't installed PC Companion up until now
So ... turns out I spoke too soon. It's still doing the same behaviour albeit in a different manner: now what's happening is it indicates it's charging when I plug the phone in then it quickly "disconnects" (no charging, no device in Windows Explorer). It won't connect again til I plug it in again.
And I know this sounds wierd but it *seems* to disconnect when I lay the phone down and I'm not holding it. It's like if it thinks you aren't holding it anymore it disconnects (or am I going crazy with this line of thought?).
I'm assuming this is an issue with .757 stock firmware and/or possibly DooMKernel since I don't recall it happening on either earlier stock versions or CM10/11 based roms.
Most frustrating :|
Edit: OK I just watched it start charging again by itself without me touching it so it's not motion. Bloody thing is driving me bonkers.
Edit #2: Its sitting there rock solid charging away ... I dont get it, I didn't do anything
Just try a different cable. Let's try to rule it out at least.

OK so cable doesn't make a difference.

I am not trying to alarm people, but want to share a problem I am having. My Flyer is now bricked. Its totally dead. It does not respond to any charge.
Background:
I upgraded to Leak3 from Leak2 via shortcut => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19252771&postcount=54
The reason of this shortcut is that I did not revert to GB. This means that that I did not upgrade to HBOOT / RADIO that comes with leak3.
I was able to charge/discharge my flyer fine till now. 2 days ago I forgot to charge my flyer and charge level dropped to 5%. At that time my Flyer stopped responding to charger and never charged after despite all my attempts.
I don't know what happened. It is likely that this is a hardware issue, but I did want to caution others if they have the same issue.
OK, I assume you have tried a different charger, such as a micro USB from your PC, but I thought I would ask. Try attaching it to the PC and see if ADB can connect.

Yes, tried everything => Factory charger, Connecting to computer via factory supplied cable, using MicroSD charger from my Atrix.
No luck. dead. no life.
Any suggestions other than sending it to factory?
Just want to Warn other folks on leak3 who used the shortcut. If my problems are not hardware related than do not let charge drop below 10%
What happens when you try to connect via USB to a PC?
Did you try to connect to charger and press the power button for about 15 seconds? Had the same situation with the 'normal' upgrade path (reverted to GB between the leaks), that helped.

nothing. No response.
This does not sound like its related to the HC leak. The flyer should charge and respond to ADB even is the ROM is not booting as long as the Bootloader is intact. You should chat with Globaltron. He has resurrected several Flyers from dead due to mismatched boot / radio issues. But what you describe does not seem to jive with that because they will charge enough to respond to ADB, even in that state.
Does the LED near the power switch come on at all ?

Thanks. I will send a message to Globaltron. It is very likely that what I have is a hardware issue. I first connected the Flyer to charger two days ago when the charge was 8%. The LED was blinking at that time. Right off I noticed that it did not become steady after it was connected to charger like before. After that I tried several things like softreset/hardreset/charging in recovery/fastboot etc but device never charged and was losing charge rapidly. My computer would not recognize the device nor would I see notification in Flyer.
Yesterday it completely discharged and has been like that since. I have tried connecting to computer/factory charger/Atrix charger without success.
The reason I created this tread is that there were one or two folks who reported similar behavior after leak install and I suspected there might be an issue with leaks with charging if power falls below 10%. Though unlikely I thought it was best to warn others.
People have had problems charging when the boot was messed up but it would still charge enough to connect to ADB after a while. Flashing a good boot image corrected their problem.

Yes, but you have to hold the buttons for up to 30 sec. Sorry that this also didn't help.

Thanks. I tried but did not work.
It sounds like a hardware issue. If it would not charge with android running there is a problem other than the normal mismatch of recovery and hboot. That only affects off-mode charging.
Ive got a strange problem with USB. When I connect my phone to PC it starts to charge but nothing more- it doesnt mount sd and any notification doesnt pop up. Broken USB? rather not... cause as I said it charges. Broken cable? Got three, same situation using each of them. Problem with drivers? Why not? I could have removed sthing mindless- that happens, but i tried to connect to the other 2 computers. No reaction at all. You know, Ive never faced problems like that. Ive got my x10 for about 2 years now, I connect it with PC countless times and today this happens. What might be the problem?

I am having a problem with my Galaxy S3 when plugged into USB. It wont recognize the USB connection via laptop or charge via laptop or Samsung charger. Tried three official Samsung cables and chargers, 2 computers, and still nothing. The only time it recognizes anything is when the phone is in Download Mode. In which I can restore firmware and everything else. However, no matter what firmware I put, it still will not recognized the USB or charge. If anybody has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.
There are different drivers that need to be installed. As it recognizes the download mode seems like CDC driver is installed, but if you download kies, it should install all the necessary drivers automatically. Did you try it with a different computer? If this doesn't help then your last option is to factory reset.
Hope this helps

Downloaded Kies. Has all the correct drivers. Tried two different computers. Have two Galaxy S3's, swapped out batteries. Both batteries are good in one phone. The other phone just wont recognize USB or charge in any situation. Factory reset it 3 times. Cleared everything off the phone. Didnt change anything. Factory ROM no kernel hacks or anything. Cables are genuine Samsung that came with the phone. Used mine and my friend's cable for his S3. When you plug the phone in when the power is off, u can see the battery, but then the screen goes black and doesnt charged. Also we charged up both batteries fully using one good S3 proving both batteries are good. Im out of ideas..Thanks for the reply! I appreciate it!!

Well if you say, that you did a full wipe, just curious that after factory reset did you restored it from a backup or started new. I recommend start new. Even if this doesn't help than it definitely seems a hardware problem. Get it checked.
Just wanted to share. I had a Iphone 4s and suddenly it stopped charging through a wall charger and used to charge through a usb, after numerous restores I got it checked and there seems the problem.

Started brand new. Didnt restore from any backups or anything. Didnt root it at all. It seems as whatever the firmware that it uses for charging just stopped working...Im at a dead end...its funny because there isnt any topics online with a single similar symptom.
I have the same problem..
It doesn't give any notice when i plug it into the computer,
when i charge it the screen gives a grey battery loading picture
and then just turns black.. i can still acces download mode and use odin..
which makes it really strange..
it would be great if someone knows how to solve this
Thx in advance!

I have the exact same problem on my note 2, have been searching everywhere but cant seem to find an answer.
First of all hello xda, long time reader, first time poster.
I know it's been a long time since the last post, but instead of starting a new thread i suppose it's better to post here.
I got the same problem a few weeks ago and tried everything software-wise and still nothing. I noticed that when i turn my phone on i get a notification "USB connector connected" which leads me to believe that something is keeping the connector busy and unable to charge/connect exept when in d/l mode. Has anyone found a fix for this yet? I'd like to try and fix it myself before taking it in for repair.

I have exact same problem. Seemed to occur out of the blue. I took it off the car charger and everything appeared as normal until the next day I go to charge it with wall charger and no response, except for the grey battery image appearing for 2 seconds when and only when powered off and plugging in the charger. Tried many cables/chargers to no avail. There is also no response connecting to a PC, when the phone is on.
For the moment I can charge the battery(s) with an external charger and still use my phone.
I made a simple USB cable current monitor once to measure current consumption of portable devices. Just a 0.1ohm resistor in series with the USB V_BUS (+5V) pin. Since this fault occurred, the V_BUS pin current after plugging in the charger, starts off 250mA for few seconds while the grey battery image appears then the phone shuts down with a 5mA residual current. Clearly the battery is not being charged. Previous to the fault, V_BUS current during full charge is around 950mA. I'm sure its a hardware problem.
Adam
A few days ago my S3 stopped charging properly (screen kept flashing on every few minutes when plugged in) and eventually died completely and wouldnt charge at all.
I thought it was dead (SDS) and because it is modded (Omega) I gave up on it and got a new phone. I needed something from the internal memory though so I tried plugging it in loads of times and in different configurations (battery in/out, PC USB, wall charger, etc) and eventually it charged as normal and I can boot the phone again.
I thought I would try to revert it to stock and began that process, however I found that trying to flash stock with Odin gave me an error message in Korean saying "error accessing hardware I/O output" or something like that. This does not brick the phone or anything, it seems to recognise the phone but timeout trying to actually write to it.
When I plug it in to the computer in downloading mode, the phone is recognised and Odin sees it too. In recovery it is not picked up at all by windows or by ADB (no device attached). When the phone is booted and turned on, it is not picked up at all by windows or kies. I have checked the drivers, cables, ports, etc and they all work fine for other phones, just not this one.
In the phone settings I have tried the *#7284# trick detailed on http blog.vacs.fr/?post/2010/12/24/How-to-repair-the-USB-not-detected-problem-on-Android-Samsung-phones (under 10 posts, cant post a proper URL) to no avail. Debugging mode off/on makes no difference. USB tethering shows "no usb device attached". The phone charges fine on this usb connection but I cant get it to connect to the computer.
Any ideas? or just bin it?
I'd initial suspect a faulty usb port on the phone...

Thanks for the feedback, it could be that alright.
eMMC check says its an insane chip for sudden death, could this have influenced it at all you reckon?
Due to it not picking up in Recovery and not working properly in Download mode, it seems HW damaged to me. Dont think anything can be done but I'd love to be convinced otherwise.

I don't think its related to SDS, no. I think it's just a USB port issue. Couldn't say its uncommon.
OP, if you want to get back to stock and send in for repair try using mobile odin. You wont need to use your pc.
Hi guys,
I'm having some problems with my S2's USB port. I've been combing the forums to see if I can find something, but no luck. Let me describe the symptoms and everything I tried.
Whenever I plug my phone in, it doesn't show that it's charging, but the battery is getting filled. USB also doesn't work. Rebooting the phone with the power cable plugged in shows that the phone is charging. Doing the same with the USB only made it charge but not work in USB mode. The battery life is also crappy, as the phone never goes into deep sleep (not even with the Deep Sleep app).
First I thought that the USB board might be faulty. I exchanged that (yes, the revision matches). The problem still persisted. I then tried to reflash the device with different versions of stock ROMs (ICS and JB). Same thing. I then tried flashing the Siyah kernel. That solved a small part of it. Restarting the phone while connected to the PC will make the phone be recognized as a USB device. I also installed CM 10.1. Tried it out with the Dorimanx kernel, still nothing.
My next plans are to use the NukeROM script (tried it before, but nothing) and try fiddling with different ROMs. If anyone has any more ideas, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Tudor

Did you ever try to use another, USB cable, USB port or even computer to connect your phone? If not, try this first. It is just to make sure you are not trying to fix the problem on the wrong side of the USB cable
Oh yeah, forgot to mention. Tried multiple ports with multiple cables on multiple PCs.

Awkward, in this case likely to be a hardware problem, but you mentioned it isnt. I never seen something like this.

I could live with the USB thing, but the not going to deep sleep is really a phone killer. The battery only lasts a few hours on idle.

I've been using it (even got the paid version). Doesn't really show anything useful. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, it should show me any problematic apps I have installed. Seeing as how I've been wiping like crazy, I don't think it's an issue due to some app.

If you think it's a hardware issue It would probably be best to bring the phone to a Samsung repair center.
Might just buy a new phone. I just wanted to see if anybody ever had the problem before.
