Since rooting wipes the device, is there any reliable method to back stuff up? I.e., if I use kies to backup the device before root, can I use kies to restore after root? I obviously can't use titanium.

Rooting does not wipe the phone and you can backup your files to a computer or if you have a external sd card you can backup your stuff there too

Rooting wont wipe or delete anythings, never used Kies before so i cant comment on that.

I format mine when going to a completely different rom just for a clean start. But I make sure I've backed up my EFS backup folder just incase!

You tried using kies and you want to use the factory reset, so I'm guessing you are not rooted right?

Copy the important files from the internal and external memory to your pc and do a data factory reset in settings, backup and restore. Best is to reflash the rom with Odin. See my siganture for roms and tutorial for Odin. Good luck

Factory reset won't touch your phones internal SD so you don't need to back up to your pc

Though I would, if you flash a stock rom most are wipe roms that will wipe the internal sd card... This is how I do a restock...

Copy the backup to ur pc as restoring to factory Rom will wipe internal memory.
After installing Rom u can copy back the titanium backup folder.

i was trying to install jelly beans build 16 and i accidently deleted everything from internal and external memory cards. i have a nandroid that i put on the sd card and put it back into my phone but when i try to reboot from twrp it says "no os installed do you wish to proceed". i only have wifi available for about another hour or so please help me. my note 2 is my only form of communication.
So you had a nan on your computer you out in an sd card then restored and still get that message? Was it a full backup or just data? You could just download aROM and flash to get phone back up

I got it back up but thanks for your reply.
I was in the process of installing a rom and I cleared data from recovery and I deleted including internal and external storage so I had no os to flash.

Right basically on my s3. the phone was full wiped and i want to recover my contacts but i don't want to root it any way i can recover the cntacts.
The contacts were saved on the phone memory before the wipe.
Were they not linked to your Gmail

Nope it wasn't

Not liking your chances - AFAIK full wipe specifically formats the data so if you didn't save them elsewhere and don't have a backup of your ROM, I think you've got a problem. When/if you get them back or rebuild them, Export them out to your external SD as VCF for safekeeping.
Do you have a ROM backup? You could Restore data.
have you looked at your SIM to see if they are there? If your Contacts are on View Phone Contacts, you could swap to View SIM Contacts and maybe get them from there.
If you did a full wipe WITHOUT a nandroid backup, *SMACK!!!* Go to your room...
No way to recover without a backup of somekind

I've been using an otg cable to move my nandroid backups off internal storage to a flash drive. I'm using the touchwork recovery. Recently I updated it to ver. 6.x.x. Since then, I keep getting errors when trying to copy or move my nandroids to the flash drive. I've also tried just connecting the DNA to my computer with the factory cable and get an "unspecified error, unable to copy". I can copy anything else, back and forth, just not my backups. Did TWM recovery change something in ver6? The backups restore just fine also
