[Q] Want to root but have HUGE issue - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

So my sister has one of these phones and wants to trade it and tons of accessories to me for my current s3.. It works flawlessly, However it's biggest flaw is the charging port does not work. Not sure what's wrong with it, but it will not charge whena cord is plugged in, nor will the pc recognize the phone. I have to charge the battery in an external charge pack on the wall. That however is not an issue for everyday use. BUT i require root for alot of stuff i will be using the phone for. So my question is, is there ANY way to root this phone without odin? Considering odin will never recognize the phone due to the port being bad? If so can someone please point me in the right direction because i'd love to be able to swap her phones and start using the note. thanks in advance for any/all help.

Nope sorry. A PC connection is required to root the phone.

Since the charge port is messed up i suppose it's fixable..Does anyone know if the charge port out of a samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket would fit the galaxy note? cuz i have an extra skyrocket laying around for parts

The skyrocket and note 1 have similar hardware, but physical changes are unknown. I'm guessing they are different. Open them up and see!
I got a replacement usb port on eBay for 14 bucks. But the cellular signal wasn't as strong. It's a known issue when replacing usb ports.

Internal memory extraction

My GSII is totally broken. It can't even connect to the boot cable.
Anyways
I only need a way to reach the internal memory becausei got some VERY IMPORTANT info and pictures that I need to extract.

No one even bothers to give me a answer.
I've had 2 questions and I never got an answer for any of them. What a support. What a support.

First off, understand the fact that you aren't the center of the universe, nor everyone's attention.Help will come eventually.Be patient next time.It can even take days for a proper answer to come.
So,to extract the internal memory is easy. You just have to disassemble the phone and find the "NAND" labeled chip(or so I think, but you'll probably be able to find it).Problem is that, normally,it'll be glued to the mainboard. If you remove it,you destroy any chance of recovering the whole phone.Bigger problem is that, even if you extract it ok,you don't have any equipment that will be able to read it.It's not an SD card that you stick in a reader and do your thing.
So,your best bet is to send the phone for repair and explicitly state that you want your files intact.Ask them to not repair it if they can't preserve your files.
That's all the help I can give you.I hope someone can help more.
Even though you were a bit rough but it's MUCH better than ignoring
I know I'm not Thee priority, but I just had a trip to Turkey and have ALL my pictures in my GS2. I'm nervous and you can see why.
As you can see I live in Iraq and obviously there is no proper service around here and I'm the biggest hope I got.
Either I wait until I go for another trip and take the phone with me to fix it there or to bother you guys here, and I'm sorry for that

You just need to be patient man.Sorry if I offended you,it wasn't my intention. What I told you applies to everyone around here, not to you explicitly.
Anyway, your best bet is indeed to keep the phone safe until you can get proper service.
But in case someone can offer you better help, could you tell us what exactly happened to the phone?

I had CriskeloRom 32 on my phone and nothing was wrong. I was checking websites while thephone was plugged in to a charger. Suddenly my phone died, the screen went black and didn't turn on. I tried to but it in recovery & downloading mode but it never did. Went to a repairing store they used the boot cable but it didn't even get connected.
The best guess is some hardware thing is broken inside.
My bad luck is I had the 16GB external memory filled with HD videos and I was using the internal memory for the camera. The best moments of my life in antalya/ Turkey with my wife and daughter is saved in this memory.
I was waiting for Galaxy Nexus (I actually ordered one) but after this I'm really afraid of internal memory only phones.
Now I use Galaxy Note

Well,I keep my important files in the external SD,so I avoid possible problems.
Sounds like something got fried inside your phone.Damn thing goes really hot when charging sometimes. And Iraq's hot climate must have finished it off.
So,I'd wait for someone more experienced than me to say something on the topic.I think that what I said still applies though.Samsung service maybe is your only hope...

[Q] [HELP] real trouble with SGSII

my girlfriend has the GSII and for about a week now it keep randomly saying its connected to the usb when we are clearly nowhere near any cables at all today it has been saying in the top left corner that it is 100% charged whilst on the right hand battery symbol clearly says around 75% we have tried charging with a different charger, usb and usb adapter as it randomly turns off and looking online it says that it could be related to a "cooked" battery . when turning on it flashed a big battery symbol followed by a yellow triangle and a thermometer, so we bought a new battery charged it up (using a separate phone that we know works fine) but with no luck we still have the same problem ..... its on the o2 network in the uk running 2.3.6 i think but is definatly GB STOCK any help or advice would be greatly apperciated as we are at the end of our knowledge and the phone is only 2 months old and last time she sent a phone to be repaired it came back in a worse state than it went in
sorry if this is in wrong section or if it is a duplicated post
Sounds like a dirty USB port. Try cleaning it.
have used almost a whole can of air cleaning everywhere i can possibly get to i think its cleaner now than when it was new haha
Canned air may not help. There could be something stuck on the little board inside the port that is shorting some of the pins.
Try a dry toothbrush first.
If that doesn't work try (with battery out, then let dry when done before putting battery back in) rubbing alcohol on a q-tip or something similar.

it is strange that doing data facrory reset bricked a phone.... I have done it countlessly.... it will bring your phone to the same status of the phone when you purchased...no harm. just to try only but chance is less..I dont think it will help you as ctomgee told if it sound like a hardware issue, software reset wont make any difference

would that affect the charge and usb etc ?
im just wondering if its the usb shorting and making the usb mount option function incorrectly i.e when there is no cable plugged in
sorry im not 100% on what things are called although i do try to learn as much as possible about these things
ok have tried with no luck guessing the only thing left is sending it for repairs and just hoping that it comes back fixed and un-damaged unlike the last phone that had to be sent away
it's usb board is propably busted, but you should get new one thanks to warranty

No removable sd card or battery... What if?

The usb port breaks like so many did on the X10?
When mine went I just brought a micro sd card reader and an external charger for the battery and I just carried on like nothing had happened.
But surely now if the usb port goes then you will lose any important data on the phone! If this is the case I hope u can get an exchange as I'm tied into a 2 year contact and my X10's port broke after 12 months.
Well, you have a risk every time you buy something
Take extra care and backup regularly, unless there is another way? this is one of the factors making me think twice about getting an S

I find the USB rather sturdy in comparison to the X10, and the cover is...well a beast D:
I wouldn't worry about it, just back up regularly, which you should do in the first place, if you flash things and such.
But if you find it a worry, you can take out the battery if you need to, but that of course voids the warranty . After a year it won't matter, so if you somehow break your port (which may be hard on this device, it seems more sturdy) you can always crack it open .
and the SD card...well thats not an issue, theres various apps to transfer without a cable, also theres a built in function to hook it to you pc without a cable, which i use quite frequently.

Catch 22 there though as the more you back up the more the usb port is used and the more ware it gets. Plus no USB port no way of charging a built in battery! I'm rather annoyed about it to be honest...
Feels more like Sony have followed the iphone the morei use this phone!
...did you read my post? it is removable, you will just void your warranty
Edit: even saved you the trouble of searching

No I didn't I was replying to the post I quoted while you posted lol still with the issues I had when my X10 got ran over the wifi and Bluetooth stopped working which is why I got the microSD card reader to transfer data...
It supports wifi sync, you view the phone exactly the same as if you were connected via usb once you've paired the devices.
But that requires wifi to be working like I said above my wifi stopped working after my X10 got ran over... As my phones are never loved I'm always looking at worst case scenarios...
I believe you get a 2 year warranty with Sony, perfect for my 2 year contract. Another reason why I chose the XS
LoL. Easyrider, stop talking your phone into a car crash!! If IF you get your SXS run over that would be incredibly unlucky, if u damage the usb port chances are the repair charge will sting, so best advice is look after it, love your phone, when you plug it in - do it like you care, and it will probably stick by you for life (or at least for the duration of your contract!)

[Q] Need help for hardbricked T-Mo GS3

Hey guys,
So I have hardbricked my Galaxy S3. This is solely my fault as I was being dumb (even though I want to blame it on staying up so late at night) and did not check to see what GS3 version the ROM I flashed was for. Turns out it was international and now my phone is a sitting brick.
The only observations that I have made is that my computers recognize the phone almost like any other device. I have installed the correct drivers and tried to use 2 computers (1 with Kies, 1 w/o) with no luck of fixing it. However, both computers recognize it as QHSUSB_DLOAD under Device Manager and create that faulty driver installed sound when plugged in. When I plug the phone in with the battery out, its LED turns red and will stay like that unless I try to turn it on with the power button. When I do try, my computers seen to recognize some sort of change with its connection the phone.
I spent all afternoon yesterday making a homemade jig with 3 100k resistors in a series soldered into pins 4 and 5 of a microusb connector which I then connected to the phone with no avail
I was hoping to make this thread to see who else has this problem and different observations and solutions. Does anyone know if a jig bought from a 3rd party will work? I do not necessarily want to take the steps to return/exchange the phone.
Thanks in advance.
Well I ended up calling Samsung and getting them to check it out. I didn't want to do it this way, but I'm basically left with no choice. I read that galaxy s2 owners who bricked also sent theirs in and received it without any problems. Samsung paid for 2nd day air both ways. Let's hope for the best.
From what I've read in other threads....when you get the QHSUSB_DLOAD...that's hardbricked. Mind sharing what you told Samsung what you did? I'm curious to see if they'll fix it....please update what happens. Oh and sorry for your loss.
and for future losses, if any, check this out.... http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-jtag-brick-repair/#reviews

There is a "how to" in the android development section for helping reverse a brick from flashing international gsm rom.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
the how to doesnt apply here
It's only for flashIng a bad boot.img. in this state it's like hardware w/o any software. I think Samsung has to wipe it clean to fix it so the old "it just wouldn't turn on" should do.. and the jig is no good in this situation either f.y.i

Usb port only charges when phone is off first?

I have an unusual issue that I can't really find an answer for....other than it's shot which I hope is not the case :\ Anyways a while back I had some battery issues that caused the phone to go a little haywire. One of the issues was the usb port started getting worse and worse until finally it stopped working completely. So I bought a couple new batteries with an external charger to cope with the bad usb port. Then finally after watching a couple videos and doing some research I replaced the usb port myself. It wasn't difficult at all since I've done work on my iPhones and stuff. Well now we come to my problem. When I plug my phone in it does nothing if it's ON. I've tried wiggling the cord a little but nothing, no charging or connection to the computer with multiple cables. However if I plug my phone in when it's OFF then it comes on automatically and charges just fine with no issues but there's still no connection to any computer....so I can ONLY charge the phone if it is off first. o.0
I just restored it today hoping that it was a firmware issue and it might be fixed but the restore didn't do anything but take me back to 2.3.6 (it only restored the firmware actually all my files were still there....). And with no usb connectivity I can't upgrade to ICS.....but the biggest issue I would like to get fixed is just getting connectivity to a PC via usb.....if that's possible.
Any ideas? let me know if you need more info. Thanks!
UPDATE: I rooted the phone and installed clockworkmod and wiped the whole phone hoping it was firmware glitch and a fresh install would do the trick. Well I formatted the whole phone and installed the official 4.0.4 firmware but it's still having the same problem. So I wiped it again and installed SuperNexus (looks awesome and works great btw great work to all involved ) however I still have the same issue.
But the thing that I don't understand is the usb port worked like a charm when I plugged it in for Odin but it just won't work when it's on. I've searched for this and I know it's a common issue but nothing I found was quite the same problem or had an answer. Any ideas?
So nobody has ANY ideas? This is the best place I've ever found for android help. I came here when I wanted to root my tablet and never went anywhere else because you guys really seem to know your stuff. And yet no one has anything to say about this? I would even welcome someone telling me I'm screwed and there's nothing that could be done at least I would know and wouldn't be sitting here in the dark....

Honesty, it sounds like you got a bum replacement part. Perhaps the data pins on the port are damaged or the ribbon cable isn't in all the way.

Well I checked the part multiple times so I know it's not a matter of it not being plugged in or attached completely. I was starting to assume it's either a bad replacement part or there's something else on the motherboard where there's a problem somewhere between the usb port and the phones firmware. However I've always thought that if anything is wrong in the motherboard itself that it causes more than just one problem like this....
Is there a possible more reliable place where I can order a new part? I searched but I could really find and official store or anything I mine was the only one I found on eBay.
Thanks for your suggestions btw I would like to get this fixed as everything else on the phone works perfect except this....
