Greetings...I have a simple question before trying this.
In the Development forum, I read this thread:
[ROM][4.4.2] Unofficial CyanogenMod 11 [1/4/14]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2598051
But in this forum, there are guides to installing custom roms which talk about Odin, etc.
Can I assume that threads in the developers forum assume that the basics of rooting via the threads in this forum have already been accomplished? I read the thread linked above, and I can get to the "install zip from sd card" via the 3 button method on my Fascinate (just purchased this off eBay to use for purposes other than actual phone usage).
I have installed Jellybean on a Nook Color, and have TWRP as recovery method, but I am cautious about doing this on the Samsung.
If there is another RTFM I am missing, feel free to flame, and point me in the right direction (the CyanogenMod official page also mentions a lot of stuff not mentioned in the Unofficial CyanogenMod thread above).
TIA...Eric

Yes, it really does assume being rooted and at least on a cm7 or above version, don't really know why states "if coming from stock"
I recommend following my thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53235945, to to get you up to a cm10 based ROM,,,
Then follow the instruction in the cm11 thread.
I do recommend you use the 06/04/2014 cm11 from unjustified dev found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53166395
,,,
including reading about the various issues/non-issues with its kernel, as this one seemed to be a little more particular ( temperamental ) with various fascinate phones.
but once you find what works it is a very nice version of cm11.
.
cheers
.
Thanks much...must also apologize to the forum for posting a question here in the general section. Missed the sticky on that.

Hey guys, I'm a bit of a Samsung n00b I'm afraid! I've just upgraded from an Xperia X10, which I rooted, primarily to get rid of duplicate apps (I was getting double text notifications having installed Handcent for example, so I used Titanium to remove the default SMS client). However, I always wanted Cyanogenmod, which was never available on the X10.
Now I have my Galaxy S II, I want a rooted Cyanogenmod ROM. Partly because it has loads of cool features (theme support, battery life, overclocking) but mostly because a new ROM seems like the easiest way to remove all the Orange Bloatware.
My question is, how do I go about this? I've never flashed a custom ROM before, do I need to root first, or can one simply flash a pre-rooted ROM?
About Phone shows the following (I don't really get this, as it's quite different from the Sony presentation):
Model - GT I9100P
Android version - 2.3.4
Baseband ver - I9100PBVKI2
Kernel ver - [email protected] #2
Build # - Gingerbread.BVKI3
Prepare to be flamed....
Wrong forum to ask the question in and there are countless threads to help you with this. Try the stickies in general, the FAQ would be a good start. Also, you don't need to remove the system messaging app to stop double notifications, just disable the notifications in the app settings.

It's not as though the first thing I did was post this. I searched, but I couldn't find any info on build no's (as I say, they're a totally different format to the Sony I've had the past 18 months). I've searched "root Galaxy S II", "flash Galaxy S II" and other similar phrases and found nothing that matched , so I asked the usually very helpful folk in a thread instead

Not really the point, as I've now dumped that phone. I wanted rid of the app as I wasn't using it (having installed Handcent) and it was a waste of space.

I found that thread, but firstly I don't really want to flash nightly builds (stable is better for me) and additionally, it doesn't mean a lot to me. Whilst I'm relatively comfortable with a lot within this area (I've hacked Wii's, flashed routers, rooted my X10, overclocked my PC's CPU/GPU etc), as I say, I'm a real n00b to flashing ROMs to phones. For example:
1. Make sure you're running a rooted device. - so I do need to root first. How?
2. Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1118693) - This doesn't make any sense given instruction '1', and the thread on ClockworkMod is also confusing
3. Do a Nandroid backup! - Again, how?
etc. It's confusing that you find a thread on, for example, flashing CyanogenMod, invariably you need to root first (which is on a different thread) before installing something else first (following a another thread) which requires you download something else (on a fourth thread) and flash something else (within a fifth thread).
I trust the XDA-developers posters, which is why I want to follow these instructions (god knows I was lucky with my X10 and with my Wii first time around!) but sometimes it's quite difficult!

There is no "stable" build. If you are struggling with concepts like root and cannot follow the clear, concise instructions in that thread, I would recommend staying away from CM7. Otherwise later I forsee a thread along the lines of "stuck at yellow exclamation mark".
Concise instructions such as "do it for real" you mean? Or "Do a Nandroid backup"? A little too concise perhaps?
I am not struggling with terms like "root". As stated, I have rooted a previous phone. I regard myself as highly knowledgeable in some specific - indeed, I write code for the Debian GNU/Linux project and have improved upon some of the Wii hacking processes - but I have some gaps which I recognise, and I want to learn. However, no one will ever learn this stuff for themselves if they need a glossary and a google search after every bullet point. Making unintelligible instructions and then laughing at those unable to make sense of them is not going to advance the community!
With every new process, be it a Wii hack or just a recommended application configuration, I like to read the whole process first - precisely because I don't want to waste your time later with "stuck at yellow exclamation mark".
I can see I'm not going to get the help I need, so I'll simply figure it out for myself and leave it at that. Sorry to waste your oh-so-precious time.
Hey XDA guyz need your expertise , I have rooted my S2 GTI9100 phone and now running siyah kernel.
Can someone please provide me the link to download the below listed JELLY BEAN ROMs. I'm too scary of bricking my phone by running corrupted file.
And Do I need to change my kernel to Install these Roms?
1. Paranoid Android 3
2. Neat ROM
3. Wanamlite Cleant& Fas
4. Resurrection Remix
5. Vanilla Rootbox
Provide you with links to those roms when you're more than capable of finding them yourself ? Absolutely not. What did your last slave die of ? Go look in the development sections or do a search :-/
To flash any rom or kernel, follow the instructions for flashing that rom or kernel which are always found on the first page of the development thread for the rom/kernel and/or the discussion thread of same.
If you're scared of bricking your phone, leave it stock & enjoy it. Every time you flash anything you run the (normally very small if you follow instructions/learn before you do) risk of breaking your phone. That risk increases depending on how lazy, unable/unwilling to learn & careless you are. In other words, it all depends on you.
No one is here to spoon feed.
Use logical thinking and search for them.
And don't worry, finding corrupted files of ROM's is highly unlikely

I want to find a new kernal for my d2vzw running CM10.1.2 that has fast charge at the least.
What I am finding in my searches are a lot of detailed discussions but no clear answer as to which are the top ones and where to find the correct one for my phone.
Do any of you use alternative ones and if so, where can I find them? I'm familiar with flashing and Odin and most processes involving ROMs and nandroid backups and the like.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Best rom what rom best kernel what kernel posts are not allowed .

Thread closed as its a Best kernel thread.
Hello there,
I am new to the S2 phone (I will get one at the end of the month from a friend).
I see that there are lots of roms and kernels.
Now what I am searching for is:
Super optimized rom like Tigrouzens rom for Samsung Wave 1 and 2.
Also kernel super optimized.
With other words. a really fast rom (I don't want outdated roms).
Preffered android version:
4.3.X Jelly Bean / 4.4 Kitkat
Also, I don't really know how to install those roms/kernels. So a simple tutorial should do it. Because I once flashed one through odin from pc and not through recovery.
Greetings,
GreekBlood
Go to the development sections (Android Development & Original Android Development), read some threads, try out some roms to find one that suits your needs. Instructions for flashing roms are always on the first page devoted to the rom & always very clear.
Rom recommendations are forbidden here because they're so subjective, mods will close the thread if you insist on asking for them (this is XDA after all, if you're here, it's assumed you like flashing stuff to your phone).

And the best ROM is................................................................. LOL
I predict thread soon to be closed (i am psychic haha)
Oh, sorry.
But it is a bit of a mess here. So many roms, so many kernels.
I'm coming from wave 1 where we have 2 roms and 2 kernels.
Being a newbie, i being in you shoes a few days ago would advice you to start with understanding the fundamentals og flashing and use of the various recoveries out there. You say its a mess because you see so many roms and kernels and you dont know where to begin. Pick one and start and with time you will catch up with the rest. Good luck...modding and customizing android is like a rabbit whole...no end...

Reading the first page & last 10 pages of any rom/kernel thread will give you a couple of things:-
*Instructions how to flash & features
*Some idea of how users are finding the most recent build/any issues
That's a good place to start.
Some people treat this place like a macdonalds drive-thru.

I've been trying to wrap my head around rooting and/or installing CM11 on my SGS2 i9100g for a couple of days. The main problem is that whatever is out there (and in these threads) are confusing for someone just starting.
For example, "First time installing CyanogenMod 11 to your Galaxy SII G" (which means probably this is someone like me, still running stock unrooted, and possibly doesn't have a clue)
- Make sure you're running a proper working ClockworkMod-Recovery (not asking to use the kernel, but flash it and use the CWM in it to flash CM)
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash CM11.0 zip from internal SDCard
- Flash GApps zip from internal SDCard
- DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET (otherwise your device will be stuck at boot)
- Reboot
- Don't restore system data using Titanium Backup!
- Restoring Apps + Data might cause problems and is not recommended, avoid it if possible!

I have close to no idea what this all means. I've tried the CM Installer - not available for i9100g. I tried looking up how to backup my nandroid, just in case: CWR and TWRP - but neither have recoveries for i9100g. I've been trying to maybe even be risky and just install CM11, but I'm even having trouble with that. I've tried looking up stuff on Google, only to learn that i9100g is totally different than i9100.
Can someone point me in the right direction, please?
Tried the official guide yet?

Have you tried following the official guide from the cyanogenmod team How to install CyanogenMod on the I9100g?? I was a first time newbie like you when i installed 10.1.3 on my S2, but after some trying i got it to work with this guide. The guide is specially made for newbies so every step is explained and if you don't understand something google usually has the answer. If you still need help just say so and I'll do my best to help
Yeah, actually I have. Got stuck with Heimdall Suite, and just now trying to get ClockworkMod Recovery running.

CWM doesn't have a version for the i9100g, so I'm not sure what I need to do there. If you have any suggestions that would be great.

Like I said just follow the guide from the CM team, everything is there! Since I'm new on here I suddenly can't post outside links but just look at the tutorial I posted before and then look at th 2. point. Afterwards just follow the official CM tutorial step by step and nothing can go wrong!
Thanks for this. Actually I'm still having problems, specifically getting a status error 7 described here (but please reply here if you have any insights).
This is getting to be a commonly asked question these days... and tbh a little reading/searching WOULD have answered it for you....
The version of CWM you are trying to flash CM11 with is wrong......
KitKat based roms need CWM 6.0.4.5 or newer......
The CWM I used to flash to KK was 6.0.4.7 and was linked to in the thread where I got the ROM......
So as I said, a little reading would have answered this for you.....

You're absolutely right about reading, but the problem is the information is never all in one place!
That is why I wanted to create a thread like this on: where an absolute beginner might find all the relevant and up to date information in one place rather than having to weed through pages of threads, downloading wrong CWM versions or whatever just to find out it's the wrong version.
In my case, first I learned that I even needed CWM. Ok, (and not to mention figuring out what it is). Then I try to find the version I find compatible with my device. Ok. Then I read somewhere to use Odin to flash it. Done. Then somewhere I else I read not to use Odin, and to flash it via recovery. So I have to figure out how to do that next. Only after some 5-6 more steps do I learn from someone like yourself that the version I'm trying to use is wrong. All the relevant information is so fragmented online, hence the necessity to make things easier for absolute beginners (which would also avoid questions and answers like the ones in this thread).
I don't think the problem for a lot of beginners is not reading, but not knowing where to find what they're supposed to read. I hope you see my point...

Sorry, but you're wrong. That is absolutely the problem for 99% of people who come here. They can't be bothered searching/reading & learning 'under their own steam' (so they understand things in their own way, rather than be fed a bunch of steps by someone else they don't understand). People seem to have this attitude that modding your phone without learning first is easy & risk free. It isn't. I've seen thousands of people on here like this end up with busted (permanently/requiring a lot of money to fix in many cases) phones over the past 2.5 yrs. And these people then cry they don't have a working phone. And it's almost always their own fault.
We already have countless guides/stickies/etc on here made by people with the idea that others will refer to these rather than post the same questions over & over & over. These are easily found with a minimum of effort. Just as the answers to random questions not necessarily covered in detail in these threads are easily found with a minimum of effort. Unique questions stopped being asked here a few months after this phone was released, every question that gets asked here has already been asked & answered many many times.
And guess what ?
People still post the same questions over & over & over. Why ? Because they're either lazy & 'want it now' (as opposed to taking the time to learn for themselves) or because they're unable to do something as basic as an effective internet search.
BTW, I'm not necessarily saying you're one of these people, I'm just telling you how things are around here based on my experiences, and I'd be very surprised if anyone who has been here for any reasonable amount of time offers an opposing view with regard to this.
So...By all means, create your 'thread like this one: where an absolute beginner might find all the relevant and up to date information in one place', but understand we already have dozens and dozens of these, and yours will end up like the rest; ignored by 99% of people who come here.

So, for the most part I started off with not even a clear idea of what the difference between rooting and flashing a ROM was, and I was able to finally install CM11 - but it took me days with dozens of various errors and such. But I did it.
I'm a firm believer of documenting for myself and if useful also for others, so I have written a small beginner's guide... written by a successful (?) beginner.
The only problem is I'd love for someone who's not a beginner to look it over to make sure it is in fact 100% correct before I post it - If there are errors, I don't want others to rely on that information. If I post it here, would you think you'd be able to give your input?
Of course Put it up.
