[Q] Upgrade ME7 4.2 to 4.4? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I bought my phone used and it is unlocked running 4.2.2. I'd like to upgrade to 4.4 and figured the best way would be to put the phone back to stock and then do the OTA. If there is a better way then please let me know. I haven't been able to find a definitive guide with all of the files for how to do this on ME7. The phone settings are the following:
Model number:
SCH-I545
Android Version:
4.2.2
Baseband version:
I545VRUAME7
Kernal Version:
3.4.0-faux123-JB4.2.2-custom-v

I believe you have original MDK firmware. You would be crazy to ota to any other version. As far as I know, mdk is the only version were custom kernels will work so I believe that's what you have since your running faux. Check to see if you have a custom recovery, you probably do. If you do flash a 4.4 ROM. If you're really into rooting modding and roms do not OTA! Consider yourself extremely lucky, there are tons of people that would love to be in your situation right now.

install "phone info" app from playstore .....it will give you complete info so you know exactly what version of firmware you have, as a previous poster has said, you may have a mdk base phone which has a bootloader exploit which gives 1000x more versatility ....do not proceed until you do this or you will lose that versatility

Thanks for the quick feedback. Results are attached. I always thought my phone was an ME7 but I see my bootloader is the MDK, could you explain more on this to me as to how I have an MDK bootloader but everything else is ME7? When people on the forums mention ME7, MDK, etc. are they only talking in terms of the bootloader? Should I be looking for ROMs that are for MDK and not ME7?

The reason why it appears like your phone is on me 7 is because you're on a ROM based off of me7 . The reason your baseband says me7 is because the previous user flashed a newer modem. For example, I am on MDK, running 4.4.3 with the nc5 modem.
You should be looking for any ROM that says its compatible with MDK or Loki. Loki is the name of the exploit that unlocked the MDK boot loader. So essentially, anything that does NOT say safestrap is for you!!

No problem, one more thing. If you like AOSP / cm there are plenty of them out there. However if you like TouchWiz based hyperdrive is your only KitKat option unless you try this out

4.4 KitKat TW International Rom Patch For Vzw S4 With MDK Bootloader Updated 5-30-14
I've used it in the past and its work good for me. Not sure if you would like it but it's definitely worth checking out. It gives you a whole bunch of other TouchWiz options. Happy flashing!

Best setup to be ready for kit kat 4.4 on i545

I'm running an i545 S4, rooted, hotspot tether, 4.3, MJ7. I ultimately want to be running MK2 4.4 kit kat, rooted, with wifi hotspot. What if anything can I do at this time to get my phone best setup to be ready to take advantage of new releases and who would be the most likely builders. I been read about some stuff cyanogenmod is doing and I like the Toro eclipse rom stuff (inverted) as well. Should I focus on trying to get MK2 build first?
Thanks for your help in advance cuz you guys always come thru!

There is really no telling man at this point. A lot of people are already running CM 4.4 Kitkat but for that you must be on MDK. Your best bet would be for Samsung to release a 4.4 TW build at some point and wait for someone to post build.

Yeah, to add to what the other poster said, it's the first version that the S4 came out with, and it was easy to hack by using something called Loki, which bypasses the bootloader and lets you change your kernel and run AOSP ROMs.

New S4 owner - safestrap/ROM questions

So I am a new S4 owner and have rooted my phone and installed Safestrap. I'm on the 4.3 MK2 build and would like to flash a ROM with SS.
My question is, can I flash any rom once I create a new rom slot or are only certain ones compatible. If so is there a list so I don't brick my phone.
I really just want to make some tweaks like in 3minit. Can I flash the 3minit framework with SS and use that?

A very close one is Eclipse S4 TW Edition. I am running it now, but have the same problem as explained here.. I created 1 rom slot for this rom and now have no internal storage space available. All my storage seems to be in System Memory under Miscellaneous files, but I can't expand that any to see what is using it...
My thoughts are leaning towards having to wipe the phone completely and restoring a nandroid backup to the Stock slot, to be able to get full internal storage access using a custom rom. Little weary of doing that as i love the benefit of having the stock rom available if any problems arise, but don't have any space to do anything at the moment. Been posting on Eclipse's forum and also the safestrap forum hoping to get an answer from previous experiences, but it is not looking good...
I appreciate the devs and others around that help us newbies out when these challenges arise.

Yea, already have one of those. Soft bricked the phone week 1 of having it... I know that functionality exists now and works beautifully, just really was hoping there was another solution and not be a worrisome burden on the forums... I like the challenges and the learning experiences that come along with performing such tasks, but never want to lose a device in the process. I guess if all failed, I could go back to my dusty iPhone 5s.

First thing anyone who is going to mod/hack their phones should do is download the correct stock firmware for their phone, download Odin, get all the drivers needed on the computer and just be ready in case the phone does get bricked. Takes less than 10 minutes to unbrick a phone when everything is in place

I've been running Vision-X from the ATT S4 forums for a few days. It's based on XXUFNB9, which is one of the TW 4.4.2 OTA's for the International S4. It was running pretty well, and had no issues. I literally just flashed Goldeneye, which is also based on an international S4 OTA. I've had no issues and have noticed a slight speed increase.
Important note, after flashing Vision-x, I had to flash loki-doki to Loki the kernel or it would not boot. This is assuming you are on an MDK bootloder.
Good to know I forgot to look into the international ones. I usually stick to stay I see on our forums. Thanks for sharing though

Me too, but Verizon is taking too long to release a 4.4 base, so I figured why not look elsewhere.
I tried a couple different things yesterday with the same out come. First I restored to my original 4.2 stock rooted rom and had no volume so I went back to CM11. Later in the day I flashed Hyperdrive 4.3TW rom and had the same deal, no volume. Is there something special I need to do when coming from 4.4 AOSP to 4.2/4.3 TW rom to make the volume work?

I vaguely remember reading in one of the other carrier's S4 forum that no sound after flashing a rom is related to being on either the wrong bootloader, or wrong kernel. If you flashed Hyperdrive, it's safe to assume the kernel is correct. What bootloader are you on? Not sure this applies to the VZW S4. It may only apply to the TMobile, or other GSM variants.

Right now I'm running Goldeneye from the i9505 section. Loving it. You need to be on the MDK bootloader with a recovery installed. I'm using Philz Touch recovery. Flash the Goldeneye ROM, then flash a Loki-Doki. That should be it. Both are linked below.

From what i gathered he just flashed the rom + Loki Doki which Lokis the kernel that comes with that rom.
Since Verizon doesn't officially have 4.4 yet there aren't any 4.4 TW kernels for it yet . as far as i know.

I will let you guinea pig it for me. Let me know if all is well after flashing. My worry is that I am on a i545 but I use it with T-Mobile. So I can't use some ROMs like cm11 will not allow me to use cellular data at all. Even FC's when I attempt to make a call or hang up.

Well it worked and no boot loops so that's good. But just like my other experiences I have no volume. Any suggestions? I flashed the MDK nohlos modem before I flashed. I was on MJ7 for CM11
edit: Just realized I flashed the MDK modem only and not the nonhlos version. Will try again with correct MDK nonhlos in a bit

Which MDK version should I flash? I545VRUAMDK or I545OYUAMDK?

Well not having done what you're doing now I have to admit I'm guessing...
You could try an APN app from the play store as long as you have WiFi now. There's one I've used that will get the Verizon apns and set them. Don't remember the name of it however.
Gigilie has compatibility packs I've been looking into over on one his Roms he ported over for our phones.. I'm not really sure what they include but I know people flashing i9505 Roms had something they would also flash to get everything going. Whether or not the apns are part of it again I'm not sure.
The other person on here didn't make mention of flashing anything but the Loki doki so I'm not 100% maybe he can chime in.

[Q] Help upgrading to KitKat + re-rooting?

Hey guys! So, just a quick recap of my life with my Verizon Galaxy S4: I got it back in June and rooted it (using "I545ALL-IN-ONE-TOOL") within a couple hours of having it up and running. It is my first Android phone. I then disabled the service that persistently alerted me of Android updates (so that I would keep my root). I now would like to update to KitKat.
Currently, here are my phone's software specifications (I apologize if I include unnecessary information!):
Model number: SCH-I545
Android version: 4.2.2
Baseband version: I545VRUAMDK
Kernel version: 3.4.0-562219
Build number: JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK
I am just kind of lost as to how I would go about updating to KitKat. I would like to keep TouchWiz, because I use the IR and Camera features, as well as a few other things here and there that I would miss if I lost.
Finally, once I'm up to TouchWiz KitKat, I would like to root it, so I could disable/remove some bloaty parts of TouchWiz and just the general perks of rooting.
I have tried to look through the stickies a few times to find out how to do it on my own, but I kinda got confused.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, and let me know if any further information is needed.

I would suggest simply flashing Echoe since you're on MDK: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2702592

Since you have an original MDK S4 you should just root it , install a custom recovery, then you can flash all sorts of ROMs Touchwiz or AOSP.
Is your phone rooted? If so do you have a custom recovery?
Root your phone using this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290796
Then since you appear to be new at this I'd suggest just using Goo or Flashify to install your custom recovery
Here's Flashify https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify
Then learn how to make a backup in recovery and do that.
Then look around these forums for whatever ROM best suits you.
There are KitKat Touchwiz ROMs that you can install that come from the International S4.

By the way I just over looked the part where your already rooted so my bad... Its early what can I say.
Anyways here is the link to a patch we use to enable us to run international S4 Touchwiz 4.4 ROMs .

jrkruse has made a flashable version of the verizon leak: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2721118
So that's probably the best option now for stock-kitkat. If you don't have a custom recovery, the easiest way would be to use goomanager and simply use 'install openrecoveryscript' from the options menu.

Which AOSP ROM?

I'm on MDK and I've never tried a non-touchwiz ROM. I want to now. I'd appreciate if you guys could tell me what the most popular / mainstream / well developed AOSP ROM is for the Verizon s4. I think I'd like to start my AOSP journey there.
Also, are the current crop of AOSP ROM fully functional? Or are there still some features of the S4 that aren't supported?
Thanks in advance.

Think I answered you in another thread about this topic but.. Try Mahdi, C ROM , Liquid Smooth, AICP ... They've all treated me well. They'll all run differently though for people so you'll just have to flash away and report back in their threads. Also I highly recommend using KToonsez AOSP-Kit Kat kernel with those. It's been nothing but stable for me.
Good luck!

I thought AICP couldn't be used with Safestrap? I'm about to downgrade from 4.4.2 so I can root my phone but from everything I've seen you have to use safestrap to do so... which would effectively destroy being able to use AICP.

safestrap enabled phones can only use tw stock kernel based roms which exclude CM, ASOP and all the rest

Gotcha.. I'm new to rooting so I'm still trying to learn everything I can sorry about that. Every Verizon S4 I've seen people have used Safestrap on the SCH-I545. So I'm assuming that MDK is merely a different build correct?

Hey no problem!
MDK is the build that the Verizon S4 first shipped with and it allowed for a bootloader exploit called Loki which let's us run custom recoveries... Thus allowing AOSP ROMs like the ones I mentioned.
