Ok, so I've tried to do my own research and have come up with very little. It took me about a year to figure out what rooting actually meant and did. So I rooted my SGS vibrant and flashed a bionix rom (i think). It says "bionix shut down sequence initiated" or something like that when I turn it off (any ideas on what it is or how I can find out). I really have no idea what version it is. I also would like to put a new rom on my phone but am scared ill screw it up. I watched a youtube video that told me how to do it the first time I flashed anything. It works with a few random screw ups but KILLS my battery. I would really like for someone who knows more than me to explain what a nandroid backup is and how to do one. What the clockwork rom manager can help me do. What the one click lag fix did. Why my computer won't read the storage things on the phone when connected to the phone anymore. What is this odin thing. What is a kernel. will I still get the ota updates without the stock rom. Where did my stock rom go when I pushed backup before I flashed this rom in the rom manager app. Did I actually wipe all the original data from the phone. Why can't I restore boot animation with one click lag fix(it says somethings not found... Did I wipe/delete it?). What is an apk and sdk(or skd)? What is a voodoo lag fix. How many times can you flash beer something goes wrong. I'm really new to ALL of this and have had no help really when I've asked a lot of people who apparently know more than I. ANY help from ANYONE who knows ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Almost all of those questions can be answered by reading the Tips and Tricks or Noob Guide threads. Those two threads have given me all the info I've ever needed for the Vibrant.

Theres a lot of questions in there so I'll just bite off a few at first. Before that, have you taken a look at the vibrant bible thread in the dev forum? It covers a lot of the basic ' how tos '.
Firstly, you can possibly see what version of bionix you are running by looking under settings - about phone - build number. now might be a good time for you to odin back to stock and start fresh. Odin is a program that runs on your pc and can safely install a rom on top of any lag fix you may have enabled. You can read about using odin to go back to stock in the vibrant bible thread I mentioned earlier. Once you go back to stock you can receive ota updates from tmo if that's what you want or you can reroot and flash another custom rom. If you choose to flash another rom I would recommend reading every post on that rom's thread so you can learn from other's experiences. I would also recommend you keep reading the bible thread, theres a ton of good info there.
Good luck.

Dude, THAT is why I do those stickies, thank you! So glad it helped man!
That was really helpful, thank you and I will be looking into this more little by little. But I also have 2 very specific questions:
1. Is it possible to turn an htc windows phone into an android phone?
2. will I lose everything if I push the flash clockwork recovery in the rom manager app? I haven't done it yet but everything I've read has told me to do it the first time. I have the bionix rom running and don't remember flashing the clockwork recovery thing EVER. have I messed up or can I just do it whenever? And is it true thats how you make a nandroid backup because thats what I've read.
I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out, and being patient with me. You guys are the reason I love android. Thank you from your very lost, slowly learning, new friend.

Depends on the phone, many do have android roms available. Just look up whatever windows phone you have in the forum section and if there has been some android development there will most likely be a section in the thread devoted just to android development.
You need to odin back and start from new

Long time lurker first time poster. I have a sprint gs3. Clockwork recovery is on it but i keep getting status 7 error when trying to update my rom. I cleared cache and storage n all that n reflashed recovery with odin still error 7. I was able to odin a stock rom back on still that status 7 error. I wanted supernexus build 5. Any chance someone could get a tar of that so i could just odin it on. Im getting frustrated. Id appreciate the help. I was going to post in dev but i cant yet. Thanks for taking time to check this out for me.
Status 7 error usually means the ROM was not intended for your device. CWM looks at your build.prop and kernel to determine if it's compatible. Double-check in the thread for the ROM if others with your phone are using it successfully. Also, the 1st post in any ROM's dev thread usually has a link to a discussion thread. The discussion thread is intended for all discussion not related to development.

thnaks for the heads up but it says I'm unable to post there yet. I've tried to flash the stock rom and cm10 (which was previously on there) still same error. that being said maybe my build prop is messed up or something? Do you have any idea how to fix that? I haven't messed with flashing since cupcake days. lol

i've had this happen as of recently, too. What's weird is i can attempt to flash the rom and it works fine. A few hours later, after i have flashed and wiped off another rom i go back to the original rom i just flashed. But this time it says status 7. I don't understand why it's working one hour and then a few hours down the road, the same one (un touched and un modified) will throw a status 7 at me. I get the same with CWM6 and TWRP 2.3.

Hello first time rooting this phone. Its a SGH-I777. I used the guide from galaxys2root.com/. At first it didnt work because my computer didnt recongnize my phone. I tried a different computer and it seemed successful until it rebooted. When the phone rebooted it did nothing but stay on the first screen. I still have the ability to get into Odin mode(download mode), but that is it. When i put the phone in download mode and use Odin it allows me to download the "zimage" but after rebooting it is the same exact thing. I have tried the one click root, one click factory restore. Tried restoring it on Kies. and nothing work took it to a store and the guy said he tried but it would stop in the middle of the download the only option i had with him was purchasing a new mother board for $80. Does anyone have a solution that can help me fix my phone.
Before i attempted to root it, it had OS 2.3.6 with kernal 2.6.35.7.
Go to the development section and read the stickies. There you will find stock rooted packages you can flash with Odin.

@jmula,
Enter recovery and perform a wipe data/factory reset. That may clear the failure to boot. If not you'll need to flash back to stock and start over.
The yellow trangle is a result of flashing a custom kernel using Odin or Heimdall, and is expected. You are not the first person having problems with the tools provided by GalaxyS2Root. In the future, I would recommend you avoid his site.
And... as suggested, read and study till you understand the basics. Then if you have questions, feel free to ask.

You should be able to enter recovery. Hold down all three buttons, vol+ vol- and pwr, continuously until the phone boots into recovery. It could take 10 or 15 seconds or more. If that is unsuccessful, then since you can enter download mode, you will need to flash back to stock, or stock plus root. That is not just a kernel, but the entire package. Please see the links in my sig for instructions.
The dropbox links in the download repository are temporarily suspended until probably Monday night or Tuesday as someone abused and over-downloaded. But the hotfile links still work.

The next thing I would suggest is to try and flash the UCKH7 full stock package with bootloaders. However, as the dropbox links in the download repository are currently suspended, you will have to download it from SamFirmware. To be able to download, you will need to register for free if you havn't already. Search sgh-i777 in the upper right hand corner of the page, then download the I777UCKH7 version. Let us know if that will flash.

Flash a .tar version of a custom kernel with Odin. I always use an old siyah.tar, but that's just me. There are other methods floating around but that's the quickest and easiest for me. I think there's an old entropy dd.tar around somewhere too. But just flash it through Odin and you're good to go, assuming you flashed one for your version of android. If you just want to get into recovery to flash something this works as well.
There may be links to tar versions of the kernels in creepy's sig I don't remember offhand.
Ok since i do not want to brick my phone again where it is just stuck at the boot loop. I tried looking for ways to root and when i tried some of them my phone went back to the problem it had it the beginning. Should i just call it quits or do you guys have a guide?

Give up???
I personally don't think flashing a kernel with odin is the best way to root. It increments the flash counter, for one thing, though I'm not sure how many people care about that anymore. I would suggest that you use the stock plus root package to root the phone with odin. See the links in my sig.
Guide... did someone say guide?

First, to Creepy....you've been a great resource here and I read a lot of what you post and you got me out of the very jam being discussed here. I made the mistake of trying to root via the galaxys2root.com site (actually, I thought it was a different site...was redirected), got the i9100 screen and a boot loop...couldn't go anywhere. I came back here and found resources eventually unrooting my phone all the way back to 2.3.4, then moved to 2.3.6, then the stock android 4.0.3 which updated to 4.0.4.
But I still want to root (4.0.4 shuts itself down A LOT...more than 4.0.3) and I have a Galaxy note 10.1 with JB 4.1.2 and I LOVE IT! I feel on a mission to get rooted and try out some of the JB roms I see talked about here, but can't seem to find the best way to root. I've heard exynosabuse referenced here (no links to it though) and I don't want to use the wrong one and mess up my phone. I've been reading for weeks here and there's obviously a lot of great material, but I'm not sure which material is critical to understand, and which is "nice to know" but might not even apply, and which material isn't even right. Very frustrating.

The ExynosAbuse application is the only practical way to root 4.0.4 without changing base. You can download it as an attachment in the OP of the developer's thread, but read through the thread first to understand its limitations and risks.
Alternatively, you could flash 4.0.3 plus root from the development forum. If you choose that route, please read the thread to understand how to install a custom kernel, which is recommended whether you plan to install a custom firmware or not. The custom kernel will contain ClockworkMod Recovery so you can flash the firmware of your choice if you wish.
There are really several routes you could choose. All of them work. Another would be to flash back to stock Gingerbread plus root. For that see my guide How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash counter!! (link in sig)
Hmmmmm..
Well, I see that their are many, more experienced than me following this thread and my following comment is not meant to jump on the knowledge train here, but............... I had the same event happen as the orig poster earlier today. I had installed an app,I then rebooted and it got a bit stuck on the Galaxy SII, What I did was go into recovery ,cleared the Dalvik cache and that is all I cleared. Then I re-installed the RR Rom .rar, which I keep on my SD, over everything and rebooted, it came back as it was 4 mins before . All I did after, was do a system restore(only) using Titanium BU. So when I see all the "clear and restore this and that" I started to doubt some of the more experienced than I. My 2 cents is, that, if one does not know EXACTLY ,how to correct an issue, leave it for our more knowledgeable brothers and sisters.
If I am wrong ,please except my appology.

I don't know what you're trying to get across here. Yes, restoring a backup nandroid works. Yes, you can try wiping cache and dalvik to see if it fixes an issue. Yes you can restore apps via titanium backup. All these things are indeed true.

And yet you say, "All I did after, was do a system restore(only) using Titanium BU." This may have worked for you, but this is an absolute recipe for disaster, and should not be given as a recommendation.
And further, from what you say, you did not have the "same event happen as the orig poster." Instead you "had installed an app,I then rebooted and it got a bit stuck on the Galaxy SII." This is by far not the same as trying to root with a tool from GalaxyS2Root.

Not at all. I want people to help others here. I want you to help other here as well. But it is important to post only accurate information. Inaccurate information can cause someone to do the wrong action. So I always correct misinformation.
Hi there,
Quick question in advance:
Is it necessary to have a working baseband for restoring the IMEI?
It doesn’t seem to work when I try to restore just the efs-folder.
Baseband is unknown, as well as IMEI and everything else.
Detailed information:
yesterday I flashed a few days old nightly build of CM 10.1, when I was on a newer nightly build of 10.2.
Did this from inside the systeminformation under the settings tab in CM.
After rebooting it just looped and didn’t stop to do so.
I have CWM as a recovery solution and since I needed to flash a new rom anyway, I also tried to flash TWRP inside CWM.
Though it seemed to work, I still have CWM and not TWRP. Doesn’t matter, CWM is good, too.
Then I did a complete wipe and installed Paranoid Android. I noticed that I don’t have any signal.
So I did some digging and found, that my IMEI, baseband and almost anything related was unknown.
Since I have made a backup (.img) of my esf folder a year ago, I tried to restore it.
The restoration always says it’s complete, but I baseband, imei etc. is still unknown.
I tried various tools and manual restoration to no avail.
Of course I flashed CM again and had the same problem.
I am not at home so I cannot try to flash something with odin.
This might be the last chance to get it to work..
But then I thought, if it’s necessary to have a baseband working, in order to restore esf?
So do I need to install a modem first and then I will be able to restore esf?

There is a thread about this. Please follow the link to General > Sticky roll-up in my signature. Then read the IMEI / EFS - know this stuff - thread.
Thanks for your answer, but I already read this and it does not help with my question.
I tried 3 of the 4 efs-restoration tools you're mentioning there.
But I never have baseband or imei. It just stays unknown.
Or am I missing something crucial here?

You can't have tried everything in the thread. Step 3 "send for repair".. Did you do that?
People tend to assume that I left out other things to try between step 2 and step 3,. Not sure why people think I would do that. I didn't.
No, of course not. As I wrote in the OP, I didn't even try to flash through Odin.
So I am still at step 1 - which I would most likely have working.
Thats why my question came in.
I couldn't get the information from your thread, so can you probably help me out here?
Do I need to have a working baseband to recover the /efs or IMEI?
Because I can try step 2 (odin) only in a few hours when I get home, I'm trying to find another solution in the meantime.
//edit:
I forgot to mention that by restoring the efs folder I actually get a filled efs folder in my root directory as it's supposed to be.
It just doesn't work, despite it's there...
You fail to say if you've ever flashed an EMG based rom, which is the cause of most imei issues at the moment.
If you have then flash an official EMG stock rom with odin, factory reset and see if imei is then valid. If not then restore the efs, check the file permissions and factory reset again.
I'm sorry, are you talking about the MG4 issue changing the EFS folder?
I guess I never installed that.
Just a rooted stock rom almost a year ago.
Then I installed a nightly build of CM 10.1 in april (I guess) and recently a CM 10.2 nightly build.
When I went back to CM 10.1 I stuck at boot loop and installed Paranoid Android 3.65.
Sadly I don't know if any of those include this EMG, but I guess not.
Read the return to stock for warranty guide and take phone to a service centre
There's no need to take it to a service center.
I resolved the issue the moment I got home.
As I wrote in my first post, I wondered if I needed a baseband to restore the IMEI.
Turns out I was right.
I downloaded "Perka's File Stash" over WLAN from the play store.
With this tool I got a modem file for my baseband.
(I have chosen XXDLIB from the CM Modem files, since I am on CM currently and the XXDLIB should be reliable, from what I read).
Downloaded the file as .zip, went into CWM and installed the .zip.
Everything works again. I didn't even have to restore the efs again.
Apparently the baseband was needed so it could find the efs folder, or something like that.
Anyway, maybe it's of use to someone with the same problem, cheers!
For starters, I did look through the forums, but did not see my particular problem. I hope someone can assist! Oh, thanks, in advance
I was running CM11 on my sch-i605 for a while. It developed a little bug that I decided was too frustrating to wait for a fix, so I decided to UNROOT. Well, all I did was **** up everything.
I managed to unroot & flash VRUEMJ9 back onto the phone. The problem is, I no longer have any service. Everything is listed as unknown; IMEU, Phone #, PRL, etc..all say unknown.
So, now I ROOT again, with saferoot. All goes smoothly. I went to install a recovery program (s) with Odin 3.09, and all fail. I tried ROM Manger & when I try to go into recovery, it boots to boot logo and stops. I tried wityh GooManager, same thing. Please chime in with suggestions. I don't know if putting another ROM on will fix my "service issues", but I can't think of anything else to try. Oh, I went to Verizon & got another sim card, but same issue
Thanks!
I believe you need to flash a stock rom (preferably the 4.1.2 tw) and make sure you have your signal back IMEI etc. Then flash a recovery then to whatever ROM you'd prefer.

Thanks!

OK. . Did you flash the OTA VRUEMJ9? Bc if so..I'm sorry to say you have a locked bootloader now with no way of flashing any custom ROMS. . If this is the case.. to get hit service back, IMEI, baseband and all the goodies, you need to flash the MJ9 firmware HERE. .Make sure you flash with the pit file in this thread as well..
Make sure to hit thanks on both those links..
