Firewater and latest AT&T HTC One M8 - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Just an FYI. I just received my replacement AT&T HTC One M8. Still has Android 4.4.2 but firewater does not work anymore for s-off. Had to purchase sunshine. My 3 previous AT&T M8 all worked well with firewater. I assume, they have updated the HBOOT. Just giving you guys a heads up.

i just got my m8 a week ago and firewater didn't work. i had to purchase sunshine too

Did you guys unlock using HTC or is there a temp root method that works with sunshine without having to void warranty?

Don't worry about voiding warranty. AT&T only cares about physical damage to the phones.

Wow, I got mine last week too, I got the unlock, root and firewater s-off done last Wed. the 6th.
I used HTC Dev to unlock and Vomer's guide. My adb and fastboot commands went awol from my pc right after I completed the s-off. Had some stuff not working right until I got that fixed and the 2.22.1540.3 firmware flashed.

Just mine today, developer edition straight from HTC (Let's Talk). Loaded TWRP, rooted and used Firewater with no problem.

Chiming in, picked my phone up yesterday and Firewater didn't work. Sunshine worked fine though, and in my opinion it was worth the $25 not to spend six hours trying to jack around with the phone. vOv Still, more of a pain than the Nexus 5 was though
Up and running CM 11 now--tried Viper and the Revolution but they just weren't my style.

People stop wasting your time with "Firewater" it does not work... SunShine is the way to go. I used SunShine and it work perfect. The only down fall is the $25... But after 3 days you'll forget about what you paid for it.
If you give Firewater a chance I'm pretty sure you'll remember this post. ?

It still works for some. It doesn't hurt to try firewater first... Then if it doesn't work you can pay the $25.
I've only had this phone a story time but must have gotten lucky since firewater worked great for me and saved me $$$

I dunno how you guys got Firewater to work, I've had my phone for 3 months and it still didn't work.

Might just be luck of the draw, such as a store with some older stock, etc. I know Firewater has been reported to not work on some AT&T M8's for some time now. But then I saw just the other day here, a guy just bought his and firewater worked.

firewater worked on my new m8 on latest 4.4.2. from what I read it was slim but I was in shock it worked ans saved 25 bucks.

Firewater often fails for people because they've skipped/mangled a step. It's non-trivial to get the process down right. Easy for seasoned android veterans that know when it's time to simmer down and follow the bouncing ball, but a lot of new or "enthusiastic" android users will get a piece of the pie wrong and assume it doesn't work.
I have a replacement device coming and plan on trying the free option first. But $25 for a reliable backup option is certainly nice to have around.

I'm pretty well seasoned in using ADB/Fastboot commands, and I followed every step properly. The message Firewater gave me (after having the phone for a few months) was "HTC has Patched this Exploit", which pretty explicitly explains why the exploit no longer works. If it is working for some people then I am assuming they didn't do any OTA updates prior to trying out Firewater.
I would have rooted this thing right when I got it, like every other device I've ever owned, but I wanted to wait at least 6 months to do it so I wouldn't endanger my screen warranty (I've heard of some rooted users with broken screens who were denied replacement screens based on this). Then, AT&T released a borked 4.4.3 update that was sucking the life out of my battery. Factory Reset would have fixed the problem, but I figured I might as well just root it since I was wiping the device anyways. Paid $25 for Sunshine and it saved me countless hours of looking for another solution.

I got my HTC One M8 from the Seattle AT&T store on 17 August. Used Firewater on it about two weeks ago. Worked fine. Sent a donation to the devs.

firewater worked for me as well

Firewater worked for me as well. Just got mine two weeks ago.

if htc unlocks the boot loader you will have to OTA update anyway ....
i did it 5 minutes after i walked out of sprint store because the rep told me i had to have it to get netflix. netflix still doesn't show up in market. i had to get an apk and load it myself. if it is locked already what is an OTA going to hurt?
The problem here is if HTC doesn't unlock........Anyone who has taken the update may have unknowingly patched an exploit that our devs are using, attempting to gain root access.

If they only 'unlock' (or stop crypto-signing) the bootloader that doesn't guarantee us anything besides that. So we might still have to root the OS, which that OTA is likely a patch against (in addition to other things).
Or they are just going to 'unlock' the bootloader and give us s=off and then we can go wild and not worry about it.
I'm not taking that chance...
...besides, if the devs here get root before HTC--or HTC flakes out--I want in, and declining OTA's is a great way to insure the best chance for root in that circumstance.
Besides, my phone runs great and I haven't missed a single feature....a few FC's here and there, but, big deal....
The way I look at it, if you buy the phone a week from now, it'll already have the OTA on it out of the box anyway. Root will happen eventually, and people won't stop hacking the phone if they can only root 3vo's that came out in the first week of production. No dev is going to want to publish a root that only works on the first week's production. That's like saying "look at me... I have a small p3n15". They won't give up until every OTA is cracked.
Mike
There is another possible benefit. I am not sure which version the engineering bootloader is, but generally, those are a hot commodity. It may be that the official unlocked hboot will have its own limitations. An eng hboot may be more desired. In today's EVO 4G, you cannot downrev to an eng hboot after you have acquired a certain version.

I did no worries
I got the update not long after I left Sprint from purchase. I didnt think anything of it and took the update. Like one member has said, Netflix was not available to me until after I did the update.
If I'm in a bad situation with gaining root doing this update, oh well. Something is bound to happen after some time. No worries here.
I did both updates as soon as I pulled it out of the box.

I did! Not worried about root, it will happen when it happens. Meanwhile, I'm great with the phone as it is, especially since you can get rid of a lot of the sprint bloat and move most apps to the sd card.
I ran it as soon as I activated the phone in hopes that it included the unlocked bootloader... needless to say, I was disappointed

Pay for root/WiFi hotspot

zedomax is a good guy i remember him rom my EPIC touch 4g days
i smashed my phone and ended up getting a brand new asurion replacement and it came with hboot 1.5
i had to update via RUU 2.17 because the "unlock bin code" wouldnt stick
either method is still ok
but i would recommend using TWRP 2.0 instead of 1.1 or what ever it was
all you have to do is download TWRP 2.0 rather than the old one and apply it the same way through fastboot
pm me if you (or ANYONE) needs any help or has questions (took me about 20 minutes to do on my own)
EDIT*
on a general note i would NEVER pay for something that is found free, i almost paid 100 bucks to have my evo 3d flashed to boost mobile till i did a 2 night research quest and figured it out

To root or not to root,

Well with the new HTCDev unlocker tool. I am not so sure i want to root my phone just yet. From the videos i have watched you have to be connected to the net and have to receive a token during the root process. Could this possibly be a method that can void your warranty without a workaround? Would it be smarter to wait for a Dev community method?
I only ask this because, well i have the rooting/flashing itch. I am still funbling around with my phone and getting to know it. Yes people, i am one of those guys, the one who really misses the 4th menu button. So would it really be worth flashing while I am still getting used to the phone. Don't get me wrong the phone rocks even with 3 buttons, but is it worth rooting right away via the HTC Unlocker?
From what I understand, any root method will void your warranty. I have never had an issue getting a rooted phone replaced at Sprint. I always flashed a stock rom before taking it in.
Any root will void a warranty, HTC just has a way to track it with HTCdev. A community method just makes it easier to get away with..

Thx... appreciate the response, its exactly what was on my mind... Except my missing menu button..
Purchase insurance on your phone and you shouldn't have to worry about your warranty. I had my original Evo replaced after it had an unfortunate collision with a wall and the screen no longer worked. I took it into the Sprint store to try and get it repaired, but they told me they couldn't and to file a claim online. The next day, I had a 3D in my hands. My 4G was rooted with S-OFF, but of course they couldn't tell since the screen didn't work.
I am going to hold off for a while on Rooting. I have a feeling there will be a few OTA updates to fix minor things and don't want to have to go back and forth to get updates. I was 100% set on rooting until I found out that foxfi works out of the box! no need (for now) for me to root!
How did you install Foxfi? It says the app is not compatible with my 4G LTE and shows the phone greyed out.

Why would you have to go back and forth? Someone always releases a rooted stock rom within hours of it's release by HTC, all you would do is either flash that or wait for the developer of your rom to update to the new OTA. As for OTA's, if and when we have a root and s-off method it's not only possible but likely that you wouldn't be able to use it if you updated your phone. Within weeks of the s-off on the EVO 3D there was an OTA patching it. I haven't rooted yet but I wouldn't accept any OTA's just in case. I still may return my phone due to data issues.

You could still get the update even while rooted.
I'll probably give it 2 weeks to make sure the hardware is okay.
Need to root for some privacy apps.
I can hear Pandora/Facebook/Twitter sucking my contacts, web history, and phone number without my permission as we speak.
I used the HTC unlock method on my 3D and didn't hesitate to do it on my new Evo LTE. It was well worth it.
For what it's worth, I had to bring my 3D in to sprint to have the touch screen replaced when it randomly went bad and they never said anything about my phone having an unlocked bootloader... They don't care.

You have to go directly to foxfi to get the APK a google search will bring you there. It is not in the market. It works fine on my phone, now I wait for second round LTE then I can get better speeds.

Well I'm still trying to download that rom.
When I get the HTC splashscreen going into to recovery, it gives me this little disclaimer about "this build is for development purposes only" and says to ask permission from HTC before sharing anything. Hmmmm....
Words can't describe how happy I am to have this S-OFF... But with the iPhone 5 out and the new quad core coming Verizon will relax and hopefully everyone else will be unlocked too.

Sounds like a demo unit. The units sent to stores for floor demos were programmed to load the demo content automatically (vzwdemo Aka device showcase). The fact it didn't come with a back makes it seem someone got out with a demo device...
That scares me... Good thing it doubles as a GSM phone, just in case

Yes I've been using it for 2 days now, and supposedly the seller verified it was bought legitimately.
Also, what about mmcblocks?
I think I can shed some light on this as I also have an S-Off phone. Mine was bought from a Verizon employee, I rooted it when I got it and did not have to unlock the bootloader (It also says LOCKED, like yours). When activated on the network, it reads to Verizon as 4G test device instead of Incredible 4G- so most VZ employees ask how I got it. I usually say I bought it from a friend because they sem to want it back. One store manager was acting shady and I wouldn't let him touch my device (just went in to activate a new line on the phone).
Sorry I am rambling- What I think you got is a store display version which would explain the lack of a rear cover. Are you sure it isn't stolen from a retail display?
If I were you, I'd look into it because they can make that "BAD ESN" if it was stolen.
Anyhow- what would y'all say my S-Off device is worth on the open market here (don't send me offers, just curious in case I get a GS3).

Sorry I am rambling- What I think you got is a store display version which would explain the lack of a rear cover. Are you sure it isn't stolen from a retail display?
If I were you, I'd look into it because they can make that "BAD ESN" if it was stolen.
Anyhow- what would y'all say my S-Off device is worth on the open market here (don't send me offers, just curious in case I get a GS3).

it really depends..
most people would wait it out, as hopefully root comes, and with root/temp-root will soon come S-OFF.
so if someone REALLY wants root, they may pay a little bit more than a regular phone, but personally, I'd rather S-OFF my device I phone from the store (which I've been offered to.. but it's not worth the risk of testing S-OFF on my main device, yet anyway)..
If you do decide to sell, I'm sure someone would gladly pay a lil more than a reg phone.

Unlock Bootloader, Post OTA update

Received my replacement phone with OTA update installed. I had ViperDNA on the phone that broke, and miss it very much. :crying: Now, every couple hours, I search through XDA DNA forum, hoping to find our fabulous dev's have found a way arround this formidable roadblock. Thought maybe I'll start a thread all of us in the same boat can watch, and maybe chat, until this egg is cracked. If any dev's have any news for us, that would be great also. :fingers-crossed:
Hi I'm in the same boat. I got this phone yesterday for the first time and did the noob move of updating ota. So I'm just hanging around waiting I'm not even sure where we're supposed to check for news on this.

The current unlock thread would be a good place to look.

If you haven't unlocked and have the OTA then you can't unlock until a new method is found.
Is it possible, if I have never unlocked the bootloader or got CID because of latest OTA (2.04.605.2 71RD), to revert back to previous firmware by flashing RUU? would I then be able to run SuperCID apk, get CID and unlock bootloader?

Sorry no, firmware updates are one way only. There's no going back.

There is no "current" unlock thread. There was an unlock thread from Nov 26th, then another one from Feb 7th. Also, there's an all in one tool kit from Jan 23rd, and a complete guide to root, too. All of these worked with the old firmware.
I'm pretty sure when a new unlock procedure is found, it will get it's own thread.

Thank goodness this phone is amazing even while stock. I just upgraded from the rezound, and even at its peak, rooted and overclocked to the max, it's nothing compared to this beast. Have you seen the benchmarks?? Unreal. Can't wait to unlock the true potential eventually, but this'll hold me till then, lol

I tried RUU, multiple times, no go. Just got my replacement phone 2 days ago, like a noob first thing I did was OTA, I thought there was an unlock, wasn't until after I did I realized I should have gotten the unlock.bin FIRST.
I even tried to use the unlock.bin from the DNA I hard bricked. Ofcourse I knew that wouldn't work, but had to try. For 45 plus shipping I guess you can send it to someone and they JTAG and S-off. I looked up how to do it, the box you need is 200$ and you need to take the phone apart, remove battery, and all sorts of junk. I could have unbricked my other DNA with the JTAG method. I would rather wait to see if these guys figure it out. BTW do we know if anyone is even looking into it?

Of course they are looking into it they have a few root methods but they are still trying to remove write protect from /system otherwise root is pointless.

"If these guys figure it out"??????
Really? It's a puzzle. The Devs here live for figuring out puzzles. It's what they do for fun. It's why we have awesome ROMs etc. They WILL figure it out. Until then we just have to be a little patient. If patience isn't your thing, mail your phone away to MobileTechVideos. I'm interested in hearing first hand if they really do have it cracked. Me personally, I enjoy the rooting process. Doing it myself is half the fun. I'll wait. I got time.

This gives me hope my replacement will be original stock and not the OTA! Had to get a replacment that will show up tomorrow as my screen has a "dead" touchscreen line through it across the screen horizontally (right between the 3rd and 4th row of app shortcuts on the homescreen.
It's really weird...I cannot move any shortcuts in the 4th row above and any shortcuts in rows 1-3, I can move freely but not into the 4th row.
typing on the stock keyboard id doable, but any ttype of swype method (which I need and depend on, is impossible).
If it ships with the OTA I will be bummed

No. Just.... no.
When you get the replacement can you just look at the software version on the box before opening it and if it's the new software send it back and say the box looked damaged and ask them to send a new one with the hope it has the old software?

I manage my company's smartphone account...my rep would get pretty PO'd at me if I kept sending phones back and getting new ones shipped FedEx overnight...lol...but if I was an individual consumer account I would be doing that.
We actually only pay $50/month for 450 min pooled, unlimited data, text and MMS....helluva deal!
