[Q] Root and S-OFF - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Help everyone.
Have had my M8 for a couple of months now and I think I've had enough sense. I've been doing some digging through here but can't seem to find a good thread/guide to help me with the process. I know of sunshine is about the only way to S-OFF, but don't know if that same method would root and do everything I need.
Would anyone mind helping me out and pointing me in the right direction?

Sunshine will root, unlock your bootloader, and S-OFF your phone all at once. If you want to switch to another ROM you'll need to flash a custom recovery such as TWRP or CWM which can both be found in the "Original Development" section of the M8 forum.
After having installed a recovery you will need to power off your phone, once its off hold both the power button and volume down button at the same time for a few seconds until your phone boots into fastboot/HBOOT mode. Once in HBOOT use the volume keys to navigate to 'Recovery' and press the power button to select it (you may need to navigate to fastboot area/HBOOT area of the bootloader to find 'Recovery'. Once in the recovery (if TWRP) navigate to 'Install' and find your zip (ROM) file and flash it then navigate to 'Wipe' and wipe your dalvik cache and normal cache then reboot into system.
Take note to put the ROM's (zip file) onto your internal storage or external sd card before booting into recovery.

Feel free to ask further questions as you need to. & sorry if I'm treating you like a newbie, I didn't find any tutorials for this in this forum so I figured I might as well detail it deeply.

No worries!! I definitely appreciate your help. I haven't done the process since my One X.
Would you happen to know if my hboot version matters? I just received the 4.4.3 OTA and don't know if that patched up any exploits.

So far it doesn't matter, there hasn't been any reports of anything making Sunshine not work yet. Soo you should be good to go!

According to the sunshine thread, sunshine will not give me permroot. Will flashing superu after I run sunshine give me permanent root??

Yes it will, and my bad I thought it did. Either way it will allow you to get perma root.

Quick question regarding hboot...
Is there a reason as to why my radio and OpenDSP say INVALID_VER_INFO while in hboot mode?

I am not trying to be rude but I have wasted a LOT OF TIME with replies like this.
I have been using that toolkit for 6 months.
I CANNOT SEE HBOOT OR RECOVERY AND I NEED TO BE ABLE TO USE ADB TO ROOT THIS PHONE WITHOUT HAVING TO GET INTO RECOVERY.
THE TOOL IS AWESOME BUT YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO ACTUALLY SEE THE RECOVERY ON THE SCREEN TO GET ROOT WITH IT!
Thank you

Maybe your not asking the question correctly. You say you can't see hboot or recovery. Are you trying to get the phone into bootloader? If so pull your battery put backin then hold volume down and power button. This will load into bootloader. If your just attempting to get the phone rooted then yes the tool I posted will root the phone. If your wanting to be able to change some of the permissions then you will need to install superuser. Hopefully this helps. If not maybe someone else can figure out what you are wanting to do......
I cannot see HBOOT or Recovery.
My display is not working correctly for some reason. I have flashed the stock RUU and unlocked the bootloader via the toolkit.
Now I am stuck because I cannot see the recovery screen to actually install the superuser.zip that the toolkit put onto my sdcard.
Do you see what I am saying here?
If I could simply see my HBOOT and recovery screens I would have this phone rooted in 1 minute. I am looking for a way to root manually via adv or another method because I cannot see the recovery screen to know what buttons to click.

I'm no mean an expert here but reading your frustration posts since yesterday, here's my 2 cents, you may want to try it or wait for more suggestion from others
* I've read somewhere that some "Demo" phone came with a "Demo" Rom, which, has no Hboot and Recovery
* Read this post and try to flash an ENG Hboot onto your phone. ENG Hboot for Amaze 4G can be found in the S-Off thread
* After suscessfully flashed ENG HBoot using ADB command, you can then use fastboot to flash back to stock then root normally or using AIO Toolkit again to flash custom Recovery

Ignore this please, since ENG Hboot can only be flash when S-Off'ed. I really have no worthy suggested at this point and sorry for that

There is a tool called Android Flasher (Google it) which you can use to flash Hboot onto your phone. As for the Hboot I think you can pulled it out from Stock RUU using 7Zip. Once you have Hboot on the phone, the rest will be easy. I think maybe your phone was a Demo one, which, unfortunately doesn't come with Hboot and Recovery hence the reason it doesn't "update" Hboot and Recovery when flashing RUU
I have already flashed an RUU which completed successfully. Would this stock RUU still not flash HBOOT on my phone?
I am using the phone to type this.
I can power off and then hold vol down and power and the phone will do flash a red notification light up top. If I press down volume once then power it will reboot but I of course only see a.black screen.

No it wont change it. It can only be changed after s-off. I would try to s-off. Jbear gives the option to flash a different hboot at the end of a successful s-off. Then hopefully you can finally get this thing rolling.
Definately will.
I thought root was a prereq for s off though. I'll be trying it anyways.

It's good to know that you are - at least - still have a Rom on your phone.
I think the reason why you don't have HBoot and recovery when flashing RUU is because what RUU does is just "updating" whatever img that your phone has on it and when it didn't detected Hboot and recovery, it just skipped updating those img. Long story short, I guess you are lacking HBoot and recovery on your phone. We may simply solv this by flashing stock Hboot and recovery onto the phone using tool such as Android Flasher. Again, I'm no expert on this and has never tried this before so take it with a grain of salt and do some research before give it a go, or, you can wait a little longer to get others' opinion. I don't want to be the one who bricked your phone by giving poor advices.
Be patient, at least you have a fully functional phone for now.
I edited this out...
Good luck

Now I totally understand... I think . Never have heard of this happening or have read where someone has lost the bootloader but yet phone still boots. There is the command with Hasoon's Amaze tool that will put your phone in the bootloader screen. If your still not able to view if you have tried this then hopefully someone else might have an answer for you as I have no other ideas to get you into the bootloader screen and making it visable. Good luck!

hboot screen looks like this...
bootloader
reboot
reboot bootloader
power down
the screen starts with the "bootloader" already selected...push volume down
1 time to select reboot
2 times to select reboot bootloader..etc etc...
push power to MAKE/activate the selection.
4ext recovery is touch based and since you cant see you may want to install clockwork mod from the market as you use the volume buttons for this too!
but i dont use it...(but i have! on this phone!! I just dont know how good it works reliable flashing etc)
maybe get a spare sd card and format it so we all know its blank.
then place the right file on the card
so we know its the only file
then you can count the volume clicks to the right choices.
heres hope for you buddy!... my suspicions are as follows.
flashing a different hboot using
the linked hassoons toolkit then CWM then a reboot may return your screen to power on during the times you need it...
BUT BUT BUT!!!!
i do not know if that is advisable or bad or perfectly fine...anyone else know?????

First time root, need help!

So I already had an HTC Rezound for a year and was too afraid to root-so I bought an already rooted rezound from eBay that came with a 16 gig recovery sd card. I don't know what to do or how to flash a Rom or what I should do as a root noob... Can I please get some guidance from an experienced person?

Any idea what's on it now? Check the rom info in Settings, About Phone.
Also power it off, pull the battery, put it back in and turn the phone back on while holding Volume down, that'll get you the bootloader. See what version you have and if it's s-on or s-off.
From there you can select Recovery on the menu and boot into it, see what recovery you have.
Let us know and we can go from there.

You are already unlocked and have Amon Ra recovery installed, the "hard" stuff is done (actually it's not hard), and FYI you are S-ON... You are pretty good to go for any ICS based ROM. If you want to move into JellyBean or KitKat based ROMs you should switch to TWRP or CWM Recovery. Other than that, your good to go.
Ok, thanks a bunch! Ive done tons of reading about flashing roms and am still a little weary about the actual process. Ive read that a computer is needed in some cases but in others people are switching roms right from their phone- whats the safest or correct way to do it?

Although there are ways around it (that I don't recommend, mind you) the rule of thumb is based on whether you are S-ON or S-OFF...
When S-ON, a computer has to be involved so that the boot.img can be loaded... you must either: A) flash the boot.img manually with fastboot after flashing the ROM in recovery, or B) boot the recovery image file with fastboot and flash the ROM file
When S-OFF, no computer is required, all partitions of the phone are writable by recovery directly.

Don't forget you can use the phone (or a computer) to pack the boot.img into a PH98IMG.zip. As long as it boots, that is.
Hi All,
I am also new at rooting the Rezound and I'm having trouble. I did quite a bit of reading and followed the instructions here: theunlockr.com/2012/08/24/how-to-root-the-htc-rezound-video/
Apparently this was for an older version because I can't install ClockworkMod Recovery ("an error occurred ..."). I read that getting a backup of ClockworkMod Recovery was the best thing to do before installing any ROMs. Is that really necessary? It seems like I could always find an RUU on this site and flash back to ICS if I wanted to right?
Can some one point me in the right direction for what I should do next? Basically all I want to do is flash a ROM on my Rezound that will enable me to use it as a wall controller for my home automation system. So, ideally I'd like to remove the swipe to unlock feature (just be able to press the power button to get to the home screen) and to be able to force a nightly reboot with Tasker and remove as much bloatware as possible. This device is connected to my home network through wifi only. Any ideas what the best ROM would be for that?
By the way my recovery screen looks like undeadking's. I have S-On.
Thanks!

Easiest way to get where you want is to HTC unlock if not already done,
S-0ff with RumRunner, then follow this thread with all its great stuff:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2509770
You will end up with newest radios that are best for newer stock and custom roms.
There are several daily-user type custom roms mentioned in Development.
After you read a little about each, you'll know what you want to try first.
I like the custom Sense roms for best battery life.

There are ways using terminal emulator with an s-on device alongside using a proper busybox installation to flash without using a pc and no fastboot/hboot access is needed. flashing a boot.img while in rom, rebooting to recovery and finish installing the matching rom by flashing its zip.

the one big issue you need to worry about while being s-on is if you soft brick while s-on there is absolutely almost no fix...with s-off you con ruu.exe to safely restore your phone which you cannot do while s-on....if you plan on flashing custom roms alot than i HIGHLY suggest going s-off or you'll regret not doing so when that time comes

I second this... S-Off is highly recommended, it might not seem necessary now, but when something goes wrong, you will be glad you did it.

Why would you want to repair it before you bury it--wouldn't you then be burying a perfectly good phone?
Wanna give us a little more to go on? Since you made it to the HTC screen, let me hunch that you unlocked it, installed a recovery, installed a rom, rebooted and got stuck?
Have you flashed other ROM's successfully?
Which recovery? 4EXT has a "Smart Flash" setting you might have to enable if you are not S-Off.
Did you follow any "how to install a rom" instructions available here on the XDA site, found by doing a search?
The steps outlined numerically in Hasoon's toolkit provide an easy path to upgrade.
Are you coming from Ginger Bread and trying to directly install some other base ROM, such as Ice Cream Sandwich, or Jelly Bean, or KitKat?--That won't work without first upgrading the phone's firmware with the official release.
So look around a little and see if perhaps there is already an answer.

Since you're hboot is 1.93.002 I guess your in ics firmware so.. Go to 4ext recovery, go to tools and enable smart flash, then flash ARHD or energy rom and reboot back to recovery through power menu in 4ext recovery. and if you get a message like smart flash or something like that read it and say yes or no (it's been way to long since I last went through this procedure personally but I kinda remember I got a message like that) if you don't get any just simply reboot and you'll have a working device.. Your bootloader was unlocked when you did this?
It's in the general section as (guide for unbranded htc amaze) OR something similar it'll be easy to find its in the very top

you should be able to get it working by just flashing the stock image in fastboot..
you'll need to re-lock your bootloader for this to work.
grab the appropriate stock image for your phone and carrier (must be newer than the bootloader) from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Amaze_4G/ROMs#Stock_ROMs
(i think this one - the ZIP file under wind stock image - is yours: http://d-h.st/7kW)
save it as "PHP85IMG.ZIP" and put it into the root of your microSD card. then hold down POWER and VOL DOWN to boot into fastboot.
follow the instructions to apply the update and reboot.

KitKat OTA

Now that we have our own specific forum, would it be plausible to get some sort of step-by-step guide on how to go about installing the KitKat OTA if you're rooted? In browsing through the megathread from before, I get the impression that I will need to flash the stock recovery and relock my bootloader, then unlock once again once I've updated, but the thread itself is a bit daunting and the advice is pretty well scattered amid the various conversations there. Can we get some sort of consolidated guide from someone more knowledgeable than myself?
(Thank you in advance, by the way. I know I will be highly appreciative.)

If you have the different partition layout that was introduced with the KitKat update, and also have the upgraded HBOOT then I guess i'll write up this guide. To get the phone back in proper working order, you need to do this.
1) Make sure you have the HTC drivers installed, and HTC Sync Manager fully uninstalled. ADB/Fastboot and such in working order, etc.
2) Download the KitKat OTA ZIP from Duir's Drive Folder here https://drive.google.com/uc?id=0B-kSF8g8H7KudEFRU1hPMjRObU0&export=download and open it up and take out firmware.zip
3) Get into HBOOT on the phone, and flash that firmware.zip file by running fastboot flash zip firmware.zip and also run fastboot flash update firmware.zip both will say FAIL but for me that worked if that didn't work then relock your device by running fastboot oem lock and then get back to fastboot and run fastboot oem rebootRUU (case-sensitive) and then issue fastboot flash zip firmware.zip and also run fastboot flash update firmware.zip and reboot to fastboot again
4) If you had to relock your device unlock it by getting your Unlock_code.bin from HTCdev and issue this command when you're in fastboot which is fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
5) download Duir's TWRP recovery built for KitKat which is located here https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-kSF8g8H7KuME12ai1OVHVqd3M&usp=sharing grab the openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.1-zaracl.img and then flash that by issuing fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.7.1.1-zaracl.img
6) Boot up into recovery, and format Data middle button on the right and type in 'Yes' and then wipe everything (you might have to reboot back into recovery again and then wipe everything) The reason to format Data using that button is because of KitKat remapping the partitions
7) Grab the KitKat TWRP backup from here https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8-7I2_Vt73ldUNPd2c4X0xoQXc/edit
8) while that downloads make a pseudo backup, and then when thats finished mount your SDcard and open up the KitKat TWRP backup on windows and just overwrite all the files in zara_cl442/zara_cl442 and then reboot back into recovery again.
9) Restore the Backup you made and overwrote with the KitKat TWRP backup
10) go into fastboot and go back to Duir's drive located here https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-kSF8g8H7KuME12ai1OVHVqd3M&usp=sharing and grab KK_stock_boot.img and then flash that by issuing fastboot flash boot KK_stock_boot.img in a command prompt
11) Reboot into the System and it should work

That seems really complicated and sort of risky. Can't we just restore stock recovery and boot. Relock boot loader. And then install the ota as downloaded.

That's what I was wondering. I'm alright with re-rooting afterward (and after that I'm going S-OFF so I can use Viper4Android).
On a side note, has anyone noticed higher battery consumption with KitKat? My wife (who is unrooted and generally doesn't mess with her phone) updated and her battery died twice yesterday with no real increase in usage.

The only thing I changed on my phone was gain root, unlock bootloader and flash Philz Touch cwm recovery. I haven't gotten s-off or changed H-boot. I don't want to change anything else if I don't have to. Is there anyway to get the update. I don't care if I lose root.

Alright I'll try that when I get home and let you know how it goes. Thanks a bunch.
Alright. So it didn't work. It works fine at first but at about 40% through the update it shows a red exclamation mark inside a red triangle on the phone. I unrooted and flashed the stock recovery from the development thread on the new forum. The jelly bean one. And relocked the
Bootloader. Ugh. This is really frustrating. What am I doing wrong? Do I have to get rid of s-off as well. That's fine if I do.

At&t 1.58.502.1 Bootable RUU - No PC required - Mac friendly

Here it is for everyone who has been asking for it! At&t bootable 1.58.502.1 RUU! No PC needed. This is for everyone who is having trouble with the ruu restore exe or using a mac or linux or other machine.
First off, I am NOT responsible for any thing that happens to your phone. As long as you follow instructions you should be fine, but again I am not responsible if you hard brick or anything else for that matter. If you are not comfortable with this procedure or have any questions, please ask first and not after you have destroyed your phone.
-Requirements-
1. Storage: Micro SD card required. I have heard you can use external storage for this but I have NOT confirmed this myself and do not recommend it. I have my Micro SD formatted with FAT, Not exFAT. I wouldn't think this would matter, but I have NOT verified it working from exFAT or any other format. I also recommend a descent brand sdcard as this is when you do NOT want it to fail. Your Chevron sdcard may not be the best idea.
***update*** External storage and exFAT said to be working by users in this thread.
2. CID: I have verified this restore properly working with at&t cid "CWS__001" and super cid "11111111" NO OTHER CID WILL WORK! This is ONLY for the At&t HTC One M8, NO other variant is supported.
3. Bootloader/Soff: I have my boot loader unlocked and my phone is soff, the process works perfect and does not relock boot loader nor put security back on. Since this is the non modified version of the official HTC ruu, it may work with s-on and or boot loader locked, but I have NOT tried it and do not recommend it to anyone as it has not been verified to work and I don't want any bricks out there.
***update*** s-on, said to be working by users in this thread, but you must relock your boot loader first.
4. Current firmware: I have confirmed this ruu working when coming from current 1.58.502.1 and from 2.12.401.3. I have NOT tried this coming from an Google play edition conversion.
-Instuctions-
1. Plug your phone in so there is no chance of it dying.
2. Back up anything that you need. This is an RUU and will completely wipe your phone like new. Everything will be gone including apps, contacts, pictures, music, text, recovery, etc… Again this will WIPE your phone. This will not wipe the Ext sd card.
3. Download the file that I have uploaded to Android File Hosting and verify md5 after downloading to make sure you do not have corrupt file. I have downloaded it myself and restored again just to make sure upload process went well. Again, verify your file. If you do not know how to check md5 simply google it. Please do not ask questions like this in this thread.
4. Simply move the "0p6bimg.zip" to the ROOT of your EXT micro sd card.
5. Boot to your boot loader. There are many ways to get to your boot loader. A lot of custom roms have it built into the restart menu. If you have usb debugging enabled its just "adb reboot bootloader" If you can't get there with one of these methods, simply make sure phone is on, hold vol up and power for 11 seconds until screen shuts off, let go and hold vol down and power until boot loader comes up. "about 4 seconds"
6. Click HBOOT in your boot loader. Your phone will automatically scan the file and ask if you want to update. Hit vol up for yes or vol down for no.
7. Phone will begin RUU restore. You can watch what it does on the screen as it will go through a list and bypasses are normal. It will reboot boot loader and you can watch progress bars in the top right corner. It goes through a TON of them so do NOT turn off phone for any reason and let it finish. The process takes about 15 minutes give or take. Once it is done, it will say complete, press power to reboot. Again do not power off phone or even touch it for that matter during this process.
Enjoy! This is a great file to keep on your phone in case you need a restore on the run or anything. If anyone tries any of the methods that I have said have not been verified and have success such as coming back from google play edition, locked boot loader, s-on, please let me know if they worked and I will change this post. Again I do NOT recommend these!
Please click my thanks button if this has helped you out. Thanks to Android File Host for hosting it too.

Worked like a charm. I'll edit in any issues i find.
EDIT: Only issue i'm having is that I can't update Google apps or ATT apps.
Reflashing stock recovery seemed to fix the issue for me.

That's just Google play services being outdated. Reboot usually fixes that with any Rom. Recovery has nothing to do with installing apps.

I tried rebooting, clearing data and cache and the wifi off on method. None of them worked. After about 10 attempts I tried to boot into recovery to wipe cache but it failed. So I loaded stock recovery back on.
Nothing to see here...

You are mistaken. Please check again and edit your post. It's a shame that I spent a good bit of my time getting this up for everyone and the first few posts read that someone whom has 4 posts can't update their apps and somehow think flashing recovery can make a difference and you say it is a Verizon ruu. This is just the Rom.zip stripped from the official AT&T ruu. Nothing has been altered. You have your files mixed up.

if i patched my current hboot to disguise "Tampered" and "Relocked" should i reverse it before flashing this? I cannot find the post anywhere, but i recall reading on one or more threads that this was a requirement to flash a new firmware. By the way, i have an at&t M8, bootloader unlocked, s-off with a CWS__001 CID. thanks in advance for replies to my question.

just wondering if anyone tired this coming from GPE conversion.
first off I want to thank the OP for this. I was updating (or rather reverting back) to stock with the RUU from the HTC site. When it got to step 2/7 at 66% I lost power and poof.. after this all I could do was get to bootloader and fastboot. Being that I could get to those I knew that I wasn't hard bricked...yet... whew. I tried re-running that RUU but no luck. I then went into fast boot and flashed a rcovery image and then booted into recovery and tried to restore a nand backup.. No go on that. So finally I downloaded this and put on the root of my external card and this worked...
THANK YOU!!!:good::good:
