Hey guys, I just came from a Xperia x10 (which made me very happy by the way), and after one day of stock-use I decided to change my S2 ROM, despite the stock ROM being already VERY SMOOTH. Uppon checking the development area I almost fell of my chair: There are tons and tons and tons of ROMs! Please guys, help a newbiew like me to choose a ROM! I want what everybody does, a super ultra fast ROM, with great battery like and customization.
And BTW, x10's custom ROMs improved perfomance alot, but do these Custom ROMs improve the perfomance that much? Because it's already so so so smooth!!!
Thanks guys!!
Start at Rom A and work your way through to Rom Z .
Or use the search button as this question has been answered ten thousand times or more .Even same question asked yesterday you could look at that post .
Improvements not much .
Personal choice of rom = Cognition .
But until you can understand the differences stick with stock .
jje
Go with Cognition..That is one stable and good battery life rom. Comes with many tweaks to it as well. Or CheckRom thats another good one...
But my favourite even though im trying other ones at the moment is BatistaRom. Themed rom very fast, smooth like butter and good battery life to it and my best out of all the ones out there
I'm not amazed by the SGS2's smoothness as I have an iPod Touch which shows what the definition of smooth is. trollin'
Anyways, Cognition is the way to go!
Hi, I'm new in xperia's modifications and stuff, but i had quite a few systems on my device. Unfortunately, none of them fits my expectations. I don't want to test any new roms any more, so i want some stable and fully functional.
My question is, what rom do you use for everyday usage?
I used ICS port for some time and it was the best for me... but it still wasn't it. Is there any ROM for me? Or am I stuck with a stock system?
Stock rooted ROM and modify as much as you want
Doing that on my LWW.
Same as Someguyfromhell. If you want the best stability, stock ROM is the best way to go! But if you want a ROM, my choices are in order from best (in my opinion) are:
1) Stock ROM
2) Hybrom_v16
3) Pro-X v2.2
4) Nerodroid Universal
5) Spartan ROM v2.0.5
I'm using Pro-X v2.2 right now and it's pretty sweet for now I'll stay with this one. Thanks for help!
Pro-X is very stable

X-ROM ICS is the least buggy ICS I've found in a while. it also works very friendly with link2sd. worth trying.

Hey man i feel ya, ive got mini pro as well. Was testing roms and found nothing to be really what i wanted. but Ive been using the MiniCMSandwich Lite AOSP for a good few weeks now and its been a real nice and stable rom. I have nothing but great things to say about it. haha. I use the phone mostly for whatsapp and instagram. so far i havent found any major bugs in it. its pretty fast too. Battery drain is not too bad. i can last almost two days with normal day to day on just wifi. with data i would need a charge after a day.

Hey guys,
since i'm an owner of an S3 i tried a LOT of CM rom's.
There a lot i like, but sometimes it feels a bit like a "different" phone, e.g. some features are missing etc.
So, im thinking about to switch to an modded stock rom for a great performance and huge batterylife..
Or is CM the best way for performance and battery?
thanks guys.

Stock touchwiz roms generally have better battery performance, even with custom kernels in my opinion. Its all about how you want it to look, feel, perform and last but you cannot have 100% on all, so you have to mke sacrifices for the features that mean most to you. There is no "Best ROM"
Yeah i know that there's no "best ROM"
I'm currently not sure.. CM or a modified stock ROM, both have their advantages i know, but i feel that the CM rom's having a higher battery drain... but i dont know about the performance on stock i guess CM is a bit better on the performance?!

I think its subjective but I prefer AOSP for performance

Just flashed rootbox... well, i dont like the iconcolors and the batterycolors are a bit different :/
The icons are standard jellybean blue but you can change them to what you want in hybrid settings

it feels a bit brighter on the wifi/signal and darker on the battery... but i cant change the battery colors?!
ask in the RootBox support thread
Rootbox settings > PAC battery colours

Hi there little-biggie users
I would like to know some information from those who use the latest CM11 on Z Ultra.
Does everything work? I mean for example WiFi tethering ... because I read there have been problems.
Is it smooth enough? stock 4.4.4 is very smooth ... some people say 4.3 was better ... I know it is not important, but how much does it score in AnTuTu?
Is it worth moving from stock to CM? I had Xperia Neo before ... so I have experience with flashing etc. ... but I do not have much time now and just want to be sure.
Thank you for your answers :good:

I'm not using CM (I\m building Carbon for the community so use that) but tethering was fixed about a month or so ago. No AOSP/CM11 seems to score quite as high as Stock on antutu, but benchmarks aren't everything.
I will pick Aosp performance over CM anytime.

I seen that two months ago... scores on antutu are so poor on custom roms...

They keep improving thanks to ever-excellent dev work. I tried some benchmarks for the first time recently, and got almost 40,000 points on Antutu v5 with both Slim/CandyKat and LiquidSmooth (optimised CM11 kernel) with pretty stock settings. PAC-ROM scored a bit lower at ~35-36,000 with the standard CM11 kernel.
I personally find Sony ROMs the smoothest graphically, but the benefits of custom ROMs outweigh this for me.
Haven't tried stock, but using latest nightly (not that many commis have been merged since my was forked).
It's very nice. I can only compare it with cm on note 3, but this seems better. I have a small issue with the light sensor, but everything else world fine. Smooth. I'm using ART, and I've had 0 reboots or fc's compared to the other mentioned device.
I've heard that stock is nice, but for the latest and greatest you'll have to run a cm/aosp base? Hopefully we'll see the next Android iteration soon..
I just moved off stock to CM11.2 about a week ago and I'm liking it but there is something wonky with the dialer, when I make or receive a call if I hang up using the red bar it doesn't hang the call up. The red bar turns dark and the person is still on line.
Oh, got one other complaint, the camera is VERY VERY slow to come up, like 30-60 seconds sometimes. I've also seen it unable to connect.
Those are about my only complaint. It's way better than Sony and getting my Root Explorer, Titanium Backup, and Recovery back is worth it.
Marc
Only issue is the camera sometimes forced close .. other than that , battery life is awesome , smooth and fast. On top of this I flashed a OnePlusOne conversion kit and everything works. I like the screencast app. I like this new build.
Theme engines are awesome too...
for the camera see the fix in most of the custom ROM threads
bugs everywhere but not more or fewer than other roms
I know that it's best to try them myself but I really don't have time to test all.. I'm wondering which cm based rom has great performance with comparable battery life to stock. I think stock Roms are a bit too laggy with quite a lot of microstutters. And it hangs time to time as well. Cm Roms I tried a while ago are Bliss pop and Resurrection but they both have too short battery lives. But I loved that they were so smooth.
Any recommendation?
Thanks a bunch!

Thanks! Did you do any modification like xposed tweak to make the battery good or greenify or it is just good out of the box? I'm going to try the rom probably today but want to know what setup you have.

Its really good for a cm based ROM. I also used greenish standard version. Mother than crDroid i strongly encourage you to try hybridROM. Its not CM based but it rocks.

Is that smooth and have long battery life too? My main concern is standby time as I'm a light user. Also I really want a smooth rom cause I got spoiled by ios.. Lol cause I go back and forth between iPhone and Xperia ZU. thanks so much for helping.

Very smooth , I think smoother than any CM based that I have tried and i have tried almost every ROM lol.
Another option is ZHyperROM. Its stock based and heavily debloated so its light , ultra smooth and with amazing battery life. You can also flash zombie kernel in it which is amazing and you will be OK. Thats my current setup in my Ultra and i am completely satisfied. So i think you should try these 3 options and find the most appropriate for you.

Ah. okay I actually tried ZHyperROM and it was not bad, but once I installed Zombie kernel, i saw a lot of micro stutters, so I don't know what happened there. Maybe I changed the kernel setting wrong, but I couldn't know which. So I tried XistenZ which is what I'm running, and it's smoother than ZHyperROM + Zombie, but it still lags time to time. I keep seeing random stutter when unlocking the phone with animation, and other lags too.
But I remember a while ago that when I tried BlissPop and Resurrection, it was crazy smooth, and I guessed because it's cm based, so I liked the speed, but the standby battery time was terrible. So I asked originally is there cm based rom that has good battery life.
I will try crDroid of HybridAOSP (this you mean the Z3 port, right). Hopefully I find the rom that is for me.
I advise you to change the three options regarding animations in the developer options from 1x to 0.5x. Try it in your current setup.
1x gives stuttering at least for me and many ROMS (particularly the stock based have 1x by default.

I tried that but i felt that it was still not as smooth as I would like, so I took the jump and installed Hybrid rom (Z3 port) and it seems pretty good! Also in this rom I changed to 0.5x for all three, and it's really nice. It seems like apps load quicker in this rom than stock roms I tried in the past few days, not just animations. I haven't tested battery life though, but hopefully it lives up to expectation!
Thanks for your help.

Me too.
You use 5.0.2 or 5.1.1
Since you are trying all types of ROMs, try GPE port by scrubber. I got 5 and a half hour screen on time. With auto sync and data turned on all the time. Now I'm on Xperium 5.1.1. I always had stuttering on CM based ROMS. I'm surprised to see you say that it's very smooth. Can you try Resurrection remix and bliss pop and let me know how the performance is. Play some games like subway surfer and see if you have any frame drops.

I used to try all types of Roms but now it's school term and I can't test Roms much. I did try scrubber and it's battery life was pretty good but standby wasn't as good as stock with stamina. Maybe cause I didn't bother with greenify, power nap, etc.
Bliss pop and Resurrection were super smooth and fast for me in terms of UI animations. And they were just always responsive. I don't play games, so maybe that's a different story? Hmm.. But yea battery life was terrible even with greenify power nap and amplify.

BTW, just to update, I'm on Hybrid Rom as I said, and after setting up Greenify and PowerNap (after installing Xposed), the standby time is outstanding. When I check the battery usage graph, the standby time shows literally flat horizontal line.
Performance is definitely better than stock based roms. Stock based roms had occasional lock screen animation lag after waking up from sleep (even 3rd party lock screen apps), and the phone was hanging time to time with more stutters. This Hybrid Rom does also have a bit of stutters here and there, but it's so much better with no hanging or freezing yet.
