I recently had an M8 given to me by a friend of the family and am wanting to get S-Off. Was hoping someone could give me some clear cut instructions. Here's the phone info, if you need to know more just let me know.
Android Version: 4.4.2
Hboot Version: 3.16.0.000
Radio Version: 1.16.21331931.LA11G
Htcdev Unlocked
Rooted
I tried firewater on pure stock, unlocked and rooted and it didn't work. I read somewhere that it was because I didn't have an insecure kernel. Any insight is greatly appreciated, thanks!

You'll need Sunshine,http://theroot.ninja/ It costs $25, but it's worth it. Instructions are included in the link.

Is that the absolute only way? Or is that just the easiest way?
My understanding is that if I have an insecure kernel loaded then firewater will work. I don't have $25 to pay for Sunshine and can't justify paying that much for it either.

Sunshine is the only way to get s-off. There currently isn't any other way. The firewater team is working on s-off, but there is no eta.
I paid the due and slept great after 24+ hours of flashing suggested ROM/kernel combos with nothing but failures.
Flash back to a all stock state and download the
"Sunshine apk" and run it

So I have been fighting with my phone all freaking day and am ready to toss on the towel... I have been rocking Viper rom 1.8.0 for a couple months now and today they updated to the new 4.4.3 base. it was suggested rather strongly to update framework to 2.22.401.4. I am still on 1.54..... And here begins my saga....
I tried to update the framework with FUU, and it constantly fails out at the black screen with silver HTC logo. it was suggested that this is because I am still S-ON. so I went to the firewater thread and tried that. would NOT do anything untill I went away from Viper Rom and loaded Insert Coin rom. Firewater ran, but gave me a message stating that it is not possible to S-OFF my phone...
So I ask, HELP!!!!!!! I read about sunshine, but sadly right no I simply don't have 25 bucks to toss at an app that I do not know will work on my phone...
Ok, so I just read a different thread in the general section that states that firewater is no longer working... damn. looks like on payday I gotta drop 25 bucks....
I paid for SunShine last night since firewater wouldn't work for me
i ended up just paying for sunshine.
Like the others, I had to use sunshine. The other methods would not work for me.
AT&T 4.4.3 is available now?
Where I can find firmware?
UPD:
Sorry, now I see that it is was a custom 4.4.3 rom.

Its true more recent AT&T M8's do not work with firewater. Not sure if its directly linked to newer firmware number (1.58) or hboot, or some other factor, but its been reported by many here. Sunshine is your only real option.
Sunshine seems pretty darn reliable based on reports here. I don't think there is an issue with it not working like firewater.

Seeing as there is no 2.22 firmware "officially" available for the AT&T version yet, you must be trying flash another carrier's firmware. In that case, yes S-off is expressly required.
I got a refurb unit to replace my old phone that I had S-OFF and Bootloader unlocked... Unfortunately, It wasn't a lack of skill this last time, but the exploit used by firewater is out dated now. For whatever reason they haven't updated it since the phone's release so now everyone is left to pay for SunShine. I paid for it. It works, and great. Just the $25 dollars.. It was unfortunate.

First of all you need stock kernel for firewater or sunshine to work. Both of the roms you suggested have insecure kernel. I would flash your nandroid backup and try again, or ruu and try again. It has to do with when your phone was built if firewater will or will not work. Ive seen at&t with 1.12 fresh out of the box not accept firewater.

Those are some solid words and that right there is your answer. I hope you get it resolved. The way I look at it, $25 is a small fee to be on the safe side or you can have more issues and a lot of headache if firewater doesn't work and you have to buy sunshine.

Well, I restored my stock nandroid (that was what I tried first. ) and finaly got it S-Offed with sunshine. yay! granted I forgot that the account that is linked to my paypal account only had about 10 bucks in it, so after the overdraft fee sunshine cost me around 60 bucks!
But oh well. Im now S-OFF, and got the 2.22.xxx firmware flashed and am now rocking 4.4.3 ROM Viper 2.0.1.
Yeah, turns out a ton of people had issues S-OFF, but the thing is, all of these people had stock (rooted).
(commenting just for others who may stumble upon this)
You need to install a custom kernel that has an insecure kernel, ElementalX is what i used and
it worked fine.

Why would i waste 20$ on S-OFF, I'd rather go buy myself the Nexus 5 if i had to do that.
If a free option is available, keep trying it with different methods until you succeed or give up lol.

Phone was purchased week of release. Its 4.4.4 though. Maybe when i did that ruu it reverted back? Idk. I just used the toolkit supplied on "theunlockr" rooted it using the instructions on htcdev. Then i used firewater through a cmd window through an adb kit i downloaded. Very simple. Once i got the most updated version of the adb drivers it took probably 3 minutes.

If you or OP would like I could list all the steps and instructions in doing it.
Sunshine isn't working for me. I'm running ViperOne 2.5.0 with the stock kernel and it says "bad kernel" "we don't like your kernel". Tried with ElementalX as well. Same message.

I don't think that is correct, there is no stock 4.4.4 for this device yet (with exception of GPE).
Also, its not possible to revert or "downgrade" by RUU with S-on.

Contrary to post #11, my understanding is that stock kernel works with s-off when custom does not. Although apparently, there is some inconsistancy as that person was able to s-off with custom kernel.
Try a stock ROM, and I've also seen it posted that Maximus ROM works with Sunshine.

Well I'm running ViperOne 2.5.0 (full rom) with the stock kernel and it gives me that message. When I was running 2.4.0 (full rom) with the incremental update it said the kernel was bad (elementalx) but said nothing about the rom.
Anyone know of any other roms or kernels that work with SunShine other than Maximum/Stock?
Is there a way to achieve S-OFF as of this year? I have been browsing the xda ATT HTC One m8 forums for awhile and I came across firewater and sunshine. Firewater has been discontinued and with sunshine I keep getting an error message saying "Sunshine can not be used with your device as it is. You need to flash a stock ROM, or a nearer stock ROM." I'm on a stock Sense ROM(with some mods of course) but it's stock enough right? I want to get S-OFF because I eventually want to change my phone into the Google Play Edition device. Any help or direction/s to a thread with info or your own instructions will be greatly appreciated.

Since you are going to change out to GPE, you may as well bite the bullet and send your phone back to stock, then run Sunshine.
I did and am now running Developer Edition happily.

Specifically...You need the kernel to be 100% stock. Grab the boot.img from the firmware zip that matches your phone and flash it via fastboot. Sunshine will then work.
Where can I find the boot.img? And what does the boot.img do?(what is it)
Has anyone heard of Moonshine? I've seen that and they claim s-off and it's free. I really don't want to pay $25 to s-off my device. Thanks in advance!

I just converted my AT&T M8 into GPE device. I searched enough for a week before realizing that there is no way to S-OFF without sunshine. I eventually paid the $25 and am happily running an S-OFF device now. Moonshine didn't work and firewater is discontinued.

The OP has clearly stated that they are trying to use sunshine, but its not working for them.
Stock ROM and stock kernel are best for sunshine (and not having these may be interfering). Or being on hboot 3.19 renders sunshine unable to s-off (and you can't downgrade hboot with s-on by definition); which is why I asked OP what hboot is currently on the device.
I have a similar problem - here's the twist:
Hboot *IS* 3.19. Sunshine didn't work, and the message was simply: phone incompatible, it's a known issue, we're working on it.
AND... I don't KNOW my firmware version, because I used a version of twrp when rooting the phone that had a bug with just that effect - you can't see your firmware version.
I wanted S-off specifically so as to flash the latest ATT firmware to alleviate that problem.
The ultimate goal is to get viper on the phone.
What can I do? Thanks to all in advance!

Hboot 3.19 and s-on (on an AT&T M8) means you are on 3.28 firmware (Android 4.4.4).
So sunshine won't work, and you won't be able to update the firmware to run any Sense Lollipop ROMs until either sunshine is updated to support your hboot (new exploit needs to be found, basically) or AT&T releases the LP update (after which you can update the firmware by "official" means).
I responded to your other thread, so you can read a more detailed explanation of "firmware number" there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59480010&postcount=19
So after doing some searching is Sunshine the only S-off method available right now for the ATT M9 phone?
I believe sunshine works with all variants. all you have to do is download the apk and it will run some tests and tell you if it can s-off before you even purchase it. its a pretty much fool proof. if not it will tell you what you need to do to get it ready for s-off. and from what i see the only one it doestn work for is verizon
just go HERE to download the apk, install and let it tell you one way or the other

Yes you are right. No free method for this device. Also you need to unlock your bootloader, install TWRP,root before and then Sunshine.
Good luck
Or find one of the many people like me with a Java card and never deal with htcdev and warranty to begin with. There's quite a few cards out there now and I have met up with plenty of xda people now to do s-off and unlock for them.
Hmmm... Happen to know anyone around Austin, Tx with such a card?
I am so lost. I rooted my Rezound about 3 years ago and flashed ROMs on it pretty often, but now I don't even know where to start on my One max. Got as far as getting my identifier token from HTCdev, but Verizon blocked my device.

After that flash TWRP and backup and flash a custom rom.
On my country has another way must cheaper than 25$ pay for sunshine or java card. I'ts called Xtc Clip 2. With 100$ to buy this box, you can s-off, super Cid unlimit any HTC devices, any Hboot in 2 minutes. So. ..some Repair services shop bought the Clip 2 and open S-off service with the cost 0.50$. Just S-off my Max Hboot 2.49 morning. Love it:fingers-crossed:

Verizon One Max never got lollipop. You are stuck on KitKat 4.4.2. Since you are S-ON, the only way to tether is to get a plan from Verizon. If you want to freely tether, you need to root using sushine s-off. $25
